THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in

Proverbs Chapter 9 beginning at the 1st verse. Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. She has sent out her servant girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, "You that are simple, turn in here!" To those without sense she says, "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight."

Psalm 34:9-14 9 Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. !3

10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. 11 Come, children, and listen to me; * I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 Who among you loves life * and desires long life to enjoy prosperity? 13 Keep your tongue from evil-speaking *and your lips from lying words. 14 Turn from evil and do good; *seek peace and pursue it. Glory to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now * and shall be forever. Amen THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s second letter to the Ephesians Chapter 5 beginning at the 15th verse Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making !4

melody to the Lord in your hearts. Giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. Jesus said: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord

From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: Our Vacation Bible Camp has completed its first week and both facilitators and campers are looking forward to a second week of learning, sharing and fun. The theme of the Vacation Bible Camp is “Serve God, serve Family and serve the Community.” It is important to note that this activity is not just a holding bay for those who do not know what to do with their children from 9:00am 3:00am daily; though I am sure for some parents it is. The term “Bible” suggests the essential focus of the camp - its emphasis being on the bible. It is important that children use the sacred gift of memory to learn a different verse each day; and also that they become aware of the landscape of sacred texts. The Books of the Bible containing a number of genres namely, narrative, poetry, wisdom, prophecy, Gospels, epistles and apocalyptic are all excellent reading for enquiring minds. Apocalyptic literature in the Bible can be seen in books such as Daniel, Ezekiel and The Revelation to John. Such books carry urgent !7

messages using bizarre language and often seem to be making predictions of future events. Part of the process of learning is becoming familiar with the awesome and dynamic persons that we meet in sacred scripture; some not as well known as others, but who have played vital roles in the tradition of sacred history. Other aspects of the camp involve tours and and the making of craft among other things. The camp this year has seen numbers swell beyond previous years with over eighty (80) children attending. As church we are happy to offer this ministry to the young children and teenagers of the parish. We do so with the hope that exposure to the daily devotion and the reading of God’s word along with the other exciting activities on the time table will produce persons who are better able to have consideration for others and to recognize the presence of God in their lives.

Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector !8

HEALTH CORNER By SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d It is true that there is no shortage of attractive gyms or exercise programs but there is usually an attached cost. These days every cent counts and sensible budgeting is paramount for financial stability. However, let’s remember that our health comes first and prevention is always better than cure. Therefore, must find affordable ways of getting our daily exercise whenever possible. Here are small steps to getting more exercise and there is no price tag attached: 1) Walk your dog every day. Start at a normal walking pace then gradually increase to a brisk-walk/ jog if possible. Both of you will enjoy these trips. 2) Walk the stairs rather than taking the elevator/escalator. This is particularly applicable to persons working in buildings where these are installed. 3) Dance to your favourite music while doing your weekend chores. Mopping and sweeping to calypso is great fun and fantastic cardio! 4) Go hiking with a group. It's a fantastic way to see the beauty of Barbados and to form new friendships. 5) Park your vehicle at the far end of the parking lot and walk into the building. Don't sit in the car at the space closest to the entrance, grumbling that the next driver is taking too long to come out! 6) Do volunteer work for a good cause. The elderly person down the road would appreciate having the bush removed from around his/her home. Another option is giving assistance to any of the Church's programs (hint hint). 7) Go for a swim or just have fun in the water. Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise and is very therapeutic.
