And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech; and they besought him to lay his hand upon him. And taking him aside from the multitude privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Eph'phatha," that is, "Be opened." And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And he charged them to tell no one; but the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well; he even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Firstly let me express thanks to the Altar Servers, Choristers and organist for responding positively to the call to duty during the just concluded Festival of Dedication.

There are those persons who may select the evenings or particular services according to their various commitments.

Those however, who are called to these ministries in the church have always to be present to ensure that all things flow well and that the worship of God is as it ought to be and this is much appreciated.

Of course we do recognise that there are members of the congregation who attended every service of the festival and this is great since we were able to have that common experience that enables us to move forward.

The plan for the future is for us as a congregation to use the addresses to for part of our ongoing spiritual growth as we press on so that there is further reflection on the theme “Christians under Construction�.

In the meanwhile our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Dominica. Once again that island has been devastated by a tropical system which passed through the region recently.

The Lord has spared us; not because of any virtue on our part of course; but it enables us to come to the support of brothers and sisters in that neighboring island nation.

In my capacity as Chairman of the Barbados Christian Council, I issued a statement in which it was said “We are deeply saddened to receive the news of the tragic events surrounding the passage of Tropical Storm Erika through Dominica, especially of the loss of the lives of dear brothers and sisters.

We are also concerned that some persons were injured and others may be still missing, not forgetting the widespread devastation and damage to people’s property and means of livelihood.

We pray that the Almighty and Merciful God, whose love toward mankind is inexpressible, gives rest to the souls of the departed in his everlasting arms and that He comforts relatives and friends in their affliction.

We wish to assure the people of Dominica of our continued prayerful support especially in this extremely difficult time.”

We at the St. David’s Church must stand ready to heed the call of the Archbishop to take a special collection which will go to help the people of Dominica.

Recently, you may have heard public service announcements about preventing the spread of gastroenteritis, an intestinal infection. One of the recommendations is regular hand washing, which for many of us in already a habit. However, are you doing it properly? According to the World Health Organisation, the recommended method of hand washing is illustrated below:

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Church has celebrated Mary's birth since at least the sixth century.

A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 (nine months earlier).

Scripture does not give an account of Mary's birth.

However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James reflects the development of Christian piety.

St. Augustine connects Mary's birth with Jesus' saving work. He tells the earth to rejoice and shine forth in the light of her birth. "She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley.

Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed." The opening prayer at Mass speaks of the birth of Mary's Son as the dawn of our salvation and asks for an increase of peace.

We can see every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in his creative work.

The loving parents have shown hope in a world filled with travail. The new child has the potential to be a channel of God's love and peace to the world.

Parents who bring their children to Holy Baptism must ensure that they are true to the promises they made. to bring the child up to learn the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed and the Ten first Commandments.

They must ensure to enroll their children in Sunday School and that the children are frequent at Mass.
