THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 11 beginning at the 18th verse.
It was the LORD who made it known to me, and I knew; then you showed me their evil deeds. But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. And I did not know it was against me that they devised schemes, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will no longer be remembered!" But you, O LORD of hosts, who judge righteously, who try the heart and the mind, let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. Reader: ALL: Psalm 54

THE EPISTLE READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of James Chapter 3 beginning at the 13th verse
Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of p a r t i a l i t y o r h y p o c r i s y. A n d a h a r v e s t o f righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Reader:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour. They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again." But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: I trust that persons read and are informed by the well researched and presented “Health Corner in our weekend bulletin. These articles written by Sophia Marshall, Ph.D are helpful not only in terms of health education; but moreso in health promotion. Most of us take care of our health in terms of managing illness which consists of taking our medication on time and following the instruction of medical personnel which is essential for our daily health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. Governments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Faith-based Organizations (FBOs) play a vital role in strengthening capacity and moving the focus beyond individual behaviour towards a wide range of other interventions. In our Parish Conference of 2013 Health Promotion was placed firmly before us as we were addressed by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Dr. Wendy Sealy and spent the day determining policy on health initiatives within the parish. This led to a difference in the way in which we serve meals at parish social events and ended the use of high calorie foods and sweetened drinks because of the recognition of the rise in Chronic Non-communicable Disease. (CNDCs). !6
The Anglican Church was a signatory the following year to the “Declaration of Bridgetown. This is a formal document in which the major religions in Barbados made the determination that they would do all in their power to prevent and control CNDCs in this island. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), include heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease. Healthcare professionals tell us that some persons are pre-disposed to some illnesses but by reducing the major risk factors for noncommunicable diseases, for example, tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and the harmful use of alcohol much can be done in prevention. The Christian spiritual tradition has in mind healthy lifestyles by the use of daily discipline. This is seen in one of the hymn texts. Hymn No. 6 in the CPWI Hymnal says O may our inmost hearts be pure, From thoughts of folly kept secure, And pride of sinful flesh subdued Through sparing use of daily food. Our sacred institutions, all church groups and organizations must be involved at the local, community, and national levels in health promotion and the prevention of chronic disease. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector !7
HEALTH CORNER By SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d Every week you go to the market and purchase lots of fruits and vegetables, but how do you store them when you return home? Do you have a problem with spoilage? Do you store the vegetables and fruits in the same crisper drawer of the refrigerator? This is not a good idea. Fruits and vegetables are not good storage buddies, therefore you should avoid storing them together. Many fruits such as bananas, apples, mangoes and honeydew melons, produce ethylene gas, which is a ripening agent. On the other hand, many vegetables are ethylene-sensitive particularly broccoli, cabbage, carrots, peppers and cucumbers. Therefore the emitted ethylene gas accelerates the ripening process of neighboring ethylene-sensitive produce and can cause premature spoilage. If you store broccoli with apples, within a few days, you would notice a yellowing of the broccoli. Are you aware that some produce actually absorb the odours emitted by other produce? For example, the odours of onions and garlic are absorbed by many fruits and vegetables. Apples are particularly known to readily absorb these odours. To preserve the life of your produce until you are ready to eat them, do not wash them. The dampness after washing fruits and vegetables prior to storage, encourages the growth of bacteria. In addition, avoid damaging the produce in any way prior to or during storage. Essentially by damaging the walls of the fruit or vegetable, you have created an area for the growth of microorganisms. Every week, you carefully select the best possible fruits and vegetables in the market. Now place that much care and attention in their storage. Get the most out of your investment. !8
