THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The oracle of God which Habak'kuk the prophet saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and thou wilt not hear? Or cry to thee "Violence!" and thou wilt not save? Why dost thou make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law is slacked and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous, so justice goes forth perverted. Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. THE HOLY GOSPEL: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" And the Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, `Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey 5

you. "Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'? Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"

From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: Last Friday October 4th the church celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. (1181 - 1226) St. Francis would have a tremendous impact on both Christian Spirituality and religious practice.

Here in our parish we have been able to catch a glimpse of franciscan spirituality when we examine the writings of St. Bonaventure’s “The Tree of Life” as part of our lenten contemplation and reflection a few years ago.

It was St. Francis for example who was the first person to depict the incarnation by staging the christmas crib. The blessing of the christmas crib has been etched in the christmas liturgy since his time.

There are still those in the world who follow the Rule of St. Francis down to this day in the Society of St. Francis.

The Society of St. Francis is a world-wide Franciscan community within the Anglican Communion.

The Society has been active within the Province of the West Indies particularly in the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago. Yes indeed, there are monks and nuns in the Anglican Communion or as they are often called male and female religious.

There are three paths to living the franciscan life.

The First Order consists of brothers (Society of St Francis - SSF) and sisters (Community of St Francis - CSF) who make vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, live together in community, pray together, and undertake active work of many kinds.

The Second Order (Community of St Clare - OSC) consists of sisters who make the same vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and live together in community, but whose work is focussed on prayer and contemplation, and on work within the convent.

The Third Order consists of women and men who commit themselves to live out their Franciscan vocation in the world.

Their profession vow is fleshed out in an individual Rule of Life, to which they make an annual commitment. They live in their own homes, may be married or single, and continue to support themselves financially, while meeting regularly for mutual support in local groups.

Perhaps God may be calling us to take a fresh look at our own spirituality and to take up the counsels of this dear saint.
