THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 2 beginning at the 18th verse. Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner. So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken." Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the letter to the Hebrews Chapter 1 beginning at the 1st verse

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere, "What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, subjecting all things under their feet." Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. !4

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour. Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" He answered them, "What did Moses command you? They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her." But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter !5

it." And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord

From the Rector's Notebook Greetings One of the highlights this past week was for us in Barbados to host the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) T h e Re v ’ d D r. Olav Tveit. Dr. Tveit was in Barbados as part of the observance of the 70th Anniversary of the WCC. Therefore his visit was truly historical. The World Council of Churches, established in Amsterdam in 1948 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is a fellowship of churches which confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Saviour according to the scriptures, and therefore seek to fulfill together their common calling to the glory of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is a community of churches on the way to visible unity in one faith and one eucharistic fellowship, expressed in worship and in common life in Christ. It seeks to advance towards this unity, as Jesus prayed for his followers, "so that the world may believe." (John 17:21) As members of this fellowship, WCC member churches: • are called to the goal of visible unity in one faith and one eucharistic fellowship; !7

• promote their common witness in work for mission and evangelism; • engage in Christian service by serving human need, breaking down barriers among people, seeking justice and peace, and upholding the integrity of creation; and • foster renewal in unity, worship, mission and service. At the last Assembly which was held in Busan, South Korea in 2013, the three representatives for the Caribbean were appointed to serve on the Central Committee. They are the Reverend Dr. Paul Gardner of the Moravian Church in Jamaica, the Reverend Karl Johnson of the Jamaica Baptist Union and Mrs. Eleanor Lawrence of the Church in the Province of the West Indies. The CPWI representative was subsequently appointed to serve on the Planning Committee for the 11th Assembly which will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2021. The Barbados Christian Council (BXC) hosted Dr. Tveit and his entourage here at St. David’s Church at a meeting on Wednesday and two of our Altar Servers Chrystie Wilkinson and Tyrel Agard assisted in the Ecumenical Service on Thursday night in the St. Michael’s Cathedral. We must continue to pray for ecumenical relations so that the scandal of separation may be removed and that the Body of Christ can truly be united. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector !8

HEALTH CORNER By SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d Breast cancer is often thought of as a single disease but there are several different cancers that can affect the breast. The chemical and genetic composition of the cancer assists doctors in determining the best treatment options for the patient. The tissue sample obtained from the biopsy or removed tumor is examined at the laboratory. Here are a few questions that are considered in order to classify a breast cancer. Is the cancer invasive or non-invasive? Invasive: Most breast cancers are invasive. This means that the cancer cells have spread outside of the lining of the ducts or lobes into surrounding breast tissue. It can then spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body. Non-invasive: These cancer cells remain in their point of origin. They do not spread to breast tissue surrounding the milk ducts or milk-making glands. Where did the cancer begin? The behaviour of the cancer is influenced by the location of its origin. This is important to the determination of the most appropriate treatment. Most common is breast cancer which starts in the lining of a milk duct. The ducts carry breast milk from the lobules, where it's made, to the nipple. Breast cancer can also originate in these lobules. Is the cancer sensitive to hormones? Some breast cancers have the ability to 'capture' and utilise hormones that are circulating in the body. A knowledge of whether the cancer is sensitive to a particular hormone, can determine if hormone-blocking medication could be used to slow the growth of the cancer. What is the appearance of the cancer cells under the microscope? Pathologists examine how different the cancer cells look from normal cells. Based on these differences, breast cancers are graded from 1 to 3. Grade 3 cancers are the most different and considered the most aggressive.
