THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of the Prophet Jeremiah Chapter 31 beginning at the 27th verse.

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD. In those days they shall no longer say: "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge. But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second letter of Paul to Timothy Chapter 3 beginning at the 14th verse.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.’ For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'"And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: This past week it was my pleasure to have been i nv i t e d t o b r i n g r e m a r k s a t t h e N a t i o n a l Consultation held by the Family Life Commission of the Diocese of Barbados. On that occasion I spoke as Chairman of the Barbados Christian Council ((BXC) and made the point that the issues pertaining to family life have attracted the attention of the Council to the extent that we have called persons from across the respective disciplines together on numerous occasions to discuss this vital topic. The most recent event was a panel discussion held during the month of May in association with the 50th Anniversary of Independence Secretariat under the general theme “Families in Barbados are in need of help: Our children, our family, our future”. One of the objectives of that evening experience was to pay particular attention to the young people and their role in the home and in society. It must be noted that within the ecumenical community we hold the view that along with the sociological, psychological and economic perspectives we cannot avoid the theological outlook on family. For us there is an incarnational reference regarding family, since both our Lord’s divinity and humanity were revealed within the construct of the holy family of Nazareth. !6

It is in the incarnation that our Lord hallows family life and out of that context learnt the skills that would have enabled him to engage the world of the first century AD. He would have paid attention to the rudiments of society and the requirements of religion, with weekly attendance at synagogue worship. These would have framed and fashioned his outlook. We recognize that today there are may forces that challenge family as an institution to the point where some say that Family life is in crisis. The church in its prophetic role must ever be the watchman of society, giving warning when there is danger and protecting the goods of the community. We must ever keep our eye on society, as Swiss Reformed theologian Karl Barth urged, we must hold the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. We pray that all in society will keep their eye on the family, that our homes may be havens of peace and joy and that children may be raised to be wise, responsible and spiritually aware. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector RESPONSE TO HAITI The Archbishop is requesting that congregations take a special collection on Sunday October, 30 for the people of Haiti. The funds collected will be sent to the Bishop of Haiti, The Rt. Rev'd Jean Duracin. !7

HEALTH CORNER: By Dr. Sophia Marshall There are four (4) number stages of breast cancer. The staging is based on a number of factors including: ➢The size of the tumour within the breast ➢The number of lymph nodes affected ➢Whether the tumour has spread to any other parts of the body Here is a brief look at stages 1 and 2: STAGE 0 &1 The cancer cells are confined to a very limited area. Stage 1 is divided into 1A and 1B: Stage 1A - Tumour is 2cm or smaller and has not spread outside the breast. Stage 1B -No tumour or tumour is 2cm or smaller and a few cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes close to the breast. STAGE 2 Breast cancer is still in earlier stage but there is evidence that the cancer has begun to grow or spread. Stage 2 is divided into IIA and IIB: Stage IIA - No tumour or a tumour 2cm or smaller in the breast and cancer cells are found in 1 to 3 lymph nodes in the armpit or in the lymph nodes near the breastbone. OR The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and there is no cancer in the lymph nodes. Stage IIB - The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and small areas of cancer cells are in the lymph nodes. OR The tumour is larger than 2cm but not larger than 5cm and the cancer has spread to 1 to 3 lymph nodes in the armpit or to the lymph nodes near the breastbone. OR The tumour is larger than 5cm and has not spread to the lymph nodes.

Next week: Stages 3 & 4 of breast cancer
