THE COLLECT O God our defender, storms rage about us and cause us to be afraid.

If many died through one man's trespass, i.e., Adam’s, much more have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the effect of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Then as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man's act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man's obedience many will be made righteous.

At that time Jesus said, "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master; it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. "So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

We have begun the long journey through the season of Pentecost. In some traditions it is called Ordinary Time.

!

Professor Paul Bradshaw notes that the term Ordinary Time is new and used to denote periods outside of the principal seasons of the church year namely Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.

!

In the cycle of the liturgical year this season will end on the Feast of Christ the King and will take us back to Advent Sunday the first Sunday of the Church’s new year.

!

Sacristans, Vergers, Servers, members of Altar Guilds and some others are generally aware that the liturgical colour is green except in case where the Book of common Prayer prescribes that because of a particular observance the colour red or white is used.

!

There are some feast days that take precedence if they fall on a Sunday on such days the liturgical colour will reflect the particular observance.

!

For example, next Sunday (June 29) is the Feast of St. Peter and Paul the liturgical colour will be red to symbolize that these Apostles died as martyrs. All Saints Day may be observed on the Sunday following November 1 in addition to its observance on that day, the colour will be white

!

Liturgical colours have been used from earliest times to enhance the sense of worship in the Mass.

!

Liturgical theologian, The Rev’d Canon Dr. Winston Layne in a seminar a few years ago speaking on liturgical colour made the point that as Caribbean people we are

awed by the deep colours of our natural heritage and that the worship picks these natural elements up as we come to God almighty in prayer.

!

We may ask the question what has all of this to do with anything and how does this impact on our lives day by day.

!

We are aware that colour makes a deep impression on our minds. the stark differences cause us to see that God has created variety; yet in he midst of it there is order and harmony.

!

It tell us that that liturgy is not a random act; but a planned and well organized event in which the Holy Spirit breathes his life in us and through us.

!

The orderliness of the liturgy must help us in the chances and changes of daily living that God almighty will bring order into our lives even as we move along the continuum of change.

!

We give thanks for this season of Pentecost in which we focus on the activity of Jesus with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Awards will be given to those members who have served for 35, 40 and 50 years respectively. His Grace the Archbishop, Dr. John Holder will preside. All are welcome to attend.

THE RECTOR’S HOLIDAY The Rector, The Rev’d Canon Noel Burke will be on holiday for the month of July. During that time the Dean Emeritus The Very Rev’d William Dixon, CBE will be Priest-in-Charge of the parish assisted by The Rev’d Canon Dr. Winston Layne.

SPECIAL COLLECTION A special collection will be taken at all four services on Sunday, 6th July, 2014 The proceeds will go towards a special fund to assist hardship cases. A Committee has been set up to administer these funds under the direction of the PCC. Please give generously.

COMMON MISTAKES MADE WITH WEIGHT LOSS It’s Crop Over time and the gyms are becoming crowded with persons trying to lose weight! This may not be the case for you; you are just a person serious about lifestyle changes and have started a weight loss program. Whatever the case, research has shown that weight reduction in a slow and steady fashion is more likely to be successful.

American College of Sports Medicine recommends a weight loss of 1-2 lbs a week. Here are some common mistakes made when trying to lose weight: (1) Severe restrictions in caloric intake Some persons so restrict their dietary intake that essentially they put themselves on starvation diets. This does not work and can lead to serious health issues. Such diets cannot be maintained in the longterm and persons tend to regain the weight quickly.

AIM: Initially make small changes that can be maintained for life.

!

(2) Skipping meals It is often thought that skipping meals will result in weight loss.

Research actually shows that persons, who eat less than 3 meals a day, consume more calories than persons who eat 3 meals. Interestingly as well, is the research which shows that generally persons who eat breakfast weigh less than those who do not.

AIM: A healthy breakfast of protein and fiber every morning. This will keep you full until lunchtime. Strive for 3 meals each day.

!

(3) Calories from beverages aren’t counted Your favorite smoothies, hazelnut coffee and alcoholic drinks all contribute to your caloric intake. Often persons use these beverages but don’t reduce their solid intake to compensate for the liquid calories.

AIM: Substitute high calorie beverages with water or use vegetable juices, 100% fruit juices, and low-calorie drinks in moderation.

!

(4) Too much dressing Did you know that 1 tablespoon of dressing can add 75-100 calories to your meal? Okay, so you decided to have a Caesar salad with shrimp instead of your usual Double Decker but then you ‘bathed’ it with salad dressing! The Quarter pounder may have been about 400 calories but now your salad is 500 calories!

AIM: Less dressing and eventually maybe no dressing.
