You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him; because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 1 Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord * and have great delight in his commandments!

We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of God which has been shown in the churches of Macedo'nia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints -- and this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. Accordingly we have urged Titus that as he had already made a beginning, he should also complete among you this gracious work. Now as you excel in everything -- in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us -- see that you excel in this gracious work also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want,

that there may be equality. As it is written, "He who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack."

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him; and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Ja'irus by name; and seeing him, he fell at his feet, and besought him, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live." And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. ‌..there came from the ruler's house some who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?" But ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe." And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. When they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, he saw a tumult, and people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make a tumult and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside, and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, "Tal'itha cu'mi"; which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." And immediately the girl got up and walked (she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

One of my favorite epistles in the Pauline correspondence is the 1st letter to the Corinthians.

Here Paul speaks as founder and carer of the newly founded church which he established during his first missionary journey.

John Paul Heil in his work The Letters of Paul as Rituals of Worship reminds us that Paul was in the city of Ephesus when he wrote this letter In this sacred text, Heil again reminds us that Paul was responding to a number of issues most of which centered around rivalries, inter personal relationship, marriage and idolatry but which touched on matters of ritual and worship.

Being a christian in Corinth was not the easiest of habits since the new christians thought that they should continue with the same practices that they had before they were baptised.

For Paul the Apostle as for us the christian community was to gather around the Lord’s supper in which the sacrifice of Christ on the cross was to be remembered.

For as often as you eat the bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes� (1 Corinthians 11:26) This is the way it must be for us and why we take time to prepare persons to participate fully in the Lord’s supper.

We are to have a good understanding of that which we do and the more we participate the better our understanding of this ancient rite that is made contemporary each time we gather for Eucharist.

The perdurance of liturgical tradition, for example the breaking of bread and the blessing of the cup reminds as that we are part of a stream that is much larger than we are and that shall continue long after we have passed on the practices of our religion.

Humanity with its brokenness, its mental and physical issues and moral and spiritual problems and financial and economic challenges remains precious in the sight of the almighty.

It is God alone who gives us the grace to press on in the midst of all the strain and stress and gives to our lives that orderliness that we see reflected in the celebration of the sacred liturgy. !8

May God’s grace be with us as we constantly ponder on the sacred scripture and as we worship him in Spirit and truth.
