Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the Holy Sacraments, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. THE LESSON: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 2 beginning at the 1st verse When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Par'thians and Medes and E'lamites and residents of Mesopota'mia, Judea and Cappado'cia, Pontus and Asia, Phryg'ia and Pamphyl'ia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre'ne, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." Psalm 104: 25 - 37
25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! *in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. 27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. 28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. 29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. 31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. 32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works. 33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke. 34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being. 35 May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the Lord. 36 Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, * and the wicked be no more. 37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah! Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever.
!
Amen

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter to the Corinthians Chapter 12 beginning at the 4th verse Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free -- and all were made to drink of one Spirit. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook: Canon Noel A. Burke, MA Greetings: The cyclic genius of the liturgical year brings us once again to the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost Whitsunday, the birthday of the Christian Church. It is from Acts chapter 2 that we learn how the centrality of the Paschal Mystery became the essence and center of evangelistic preaching and the one event which would attract the attention of the world down to our time. Jesus’ act of glorification encompassing crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit must be considered theologically as one event. By this one event Christ has brought salvation to the entire world. Today we recall the coming of the Holy Spirit mightily upon the disciples and seek to ritualise this in our readings, hymns, prayers, procession and liturgical colour. We celebrate with appropriate liturgical ceremony the fact that, as Professor Kevin Irwin puts it, the three personed God, the Trinity is ever active in our salvation. Edward Kilmartin asserts Through the presence of the Spirit of Christ in the believers the actual presence of Christ in the !

liturgy of the church is made possible. When we pray, sing, shake hands, hug, kneel, go in procession to make our communion at the altar we do with Christ and with each other through the Holy Spirit experienced at Pentecost. Kilmartin goes on to say that Christ and the believers are rendered mutually present to one another through the Spirit and so communicate with one another through the word of preaching and sacraments and offer acceptable worship to God. Today on this fiftieth day of Easter we give thanks for the intimate connection through the Spirit who is able to link what we observe today with our thoughts of Good Friday, Easter and the the fortieth day - the Feast of the Ascension. We find that in our lives there is always the combination of these spiritual elements that we find in the Paschal Mystery. Dying and rising, being raised up, being laid low, feeling empty at times and filled with the Holy Sprit at all times helping us to pass through the valleys, climb the hills and swim through the seas no matter how rough. May God’s grace rest upon us this day and may the Holy Spirit fill our hearts with love during this Pentecostal season. !
