THE LESSON: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Book of the Kings Chapter 8 beginning at the 22nd verse Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven; and said, "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to thy servants who walk before thee with all their heart; "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built! Yet have regard to the prayer of thy servant and to his supplication, O LORD my God, hearkening to the cry and to the prayer which thy servant prays before thee this day; that thy eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which thou hast said, `My name shall be there,' that thou mayest hearken to the prayer which thy servant offers toward this place. And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant and of thy people Israel, when they pray toward this place; yea, hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place; and when thou hearest, forgive. "Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of thy people Israel, comes from a far country for thy name's sake (for they shall hear of thy great name, and thy mighty hand, and of thy outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this house, hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to thee; in order that all the peoples of the earth may know thy name and fear thee, as do thy people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.” Reader: ALL: !

Psalm 96: 1-9 1. Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. 2. Sing to the Lord and bless his name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. 3. Declare his glory among the nations* and his wonders among all peoples. 4. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised;* he is more to be feared than all gods. 5. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols;* but it is the Lord who made the heavens. 6. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence!" Oh, the power and the splendour of his sanctuary! 7. Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honour and power. 8. Ascribe to the Lord the honour due his name;* bring offerings and come into his courts. 9. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Galatians Chapter 1 beginning at the 1st verse Paul an apostle -- not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead -- and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father; to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel -- not that there is another gospel, but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, If any one is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. Am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time after Jesus had ended all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered Caper'na-um. Now a centurion had a slave who was dear to him, who was sick and at the point of death. When he heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his slave. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he built us our synagogue." And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, `Go,' and he goes; and to another, `Come,' and he comes; and to my slave, `Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude that followed him, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave well. Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. !

From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: Throughout catholic christendom the Thursday following Trinity Sunday is commemorated as a day of thanksgiving for the sacrament of Holy Communion. It is called the Feast of Corpus Christi and is the start in some places of the Sacred Heart Novena; a period of nine days in preparation for a feast that reminds us of God tremendous love for us. In some Dioceses and indeed in some parishes today would be considered Corpus Christi Sunday, simply because of the phenomenon of persons not attending mass on feast days during the week. There is the view that it makes sense to recognise these significant days on occasions when the people gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. If you may remember a few Lenten seasons ago we made an examination of the theology of Paul the Apostle in which we looked at him in one session as liturgical theologian. When we read the letters of Paul in the New Testament we see how important the Lord’s Supper was to him. It was as important as it must be to all of us who are members of the church today. !

In the social context of the Corinthian Church Paul had some cause for concern for as far as he knew persons were not doing the kind of self reflection and examination before participating in this sacred banquet. In fact Paul wrote Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. Luke 11: 28-29 (RSV) The holy Apostle is asking his congregation to take this sacrament seriously. This sacrament provides for us the lens through which we see all of life, for in it Jesus gives himself to us. In all circumstances even when there is misunderstanding and seeming conflict we must conduct ourselves in a manner that befits christians, for the eyes of many are upon us. May God give us His grace so that as often as we eat the bread and drink the cup we may truly proclaim Christ crucified, until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:26) Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !
