THE COLLECT Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. .Amen. THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 28 beginning at the 10th verse
Jacob left Beersheba, and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place, and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves. Behold, I am
3
with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you." Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place; and I did not know it." And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 103 19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven, * and his kingship has dominion over all. 20 Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you mighty ones who do his bidding, * and hearken to the voice of his word. 21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, * youministers of his who do his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion;* bless the Lord, 0 my soul. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen
THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Revelation to John Chapter 12 beginning at 7th verse . Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world - he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels
4
were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives-even unto death. Rejoice then, O heaven and you that dwell therein! But woe to you, 0 earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short! " Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.
☊ THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John All: Glory to Christ our Saviour At that time Jesus saw Nathanel coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanel said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. " Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. 5
From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) of the Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI) gives reference to the Calendar of the Church Year. In the Anglican Church, we are part of catholic tradition, therefore we do not celebrate liturgical events in an ad hoc manner; rather we follow the orderly liturgical rules of our church, set out in the Book of Common Prayer. In the BCP, CPWI it states that the liturgy of the Church celebrates but one mystery; the life death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Of course intrinsically connected to these are the ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. We refer to this one mystery as the Paschal Mystery and we seek to observe this mystery in the liturgy and in our lives day by day, The BCP also states that each Sunday is the weekly commemoration of that mystery of Christ and that Christians gather each Sunday to celebrate, in Word and Sacrament, their participation in Christ. All Sundays then are feasts of our Lord, Jesus Christ. There are some feasts that will take precedence over the readings and the collect set for the Sunday. One such is the feast we celebrate today, the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. The Catholic Encyclopedia explains that the word we translate as angel comes from a Greek term meaning "one going" or "one sent"; “messenger”.
6
The word is used in Hebrew to denote indifferently either a divine or human messenger. The Bible has shown that a belief in angels, or spirits intermediate between God and man, is a characteristic of the ancient people of Asia. Mention of these beings enter into Jewish literature rather late in the tradition around the time of the Babylonian exile and interaction with the people of Persia. By the time we reach the New Testament angels form almost a natural part of the religious experience. They are herald the birth of Jesus, they accompany him during his ministry, they are the only witnesses to the resurrection. Our christian task is to to consider ourselves as angels, messengers of the Lord, bringing hope to those with whom we come into contact, welcoming persons at the door of the church, being good neighbours to each other in the community. According to the collect for today, our Lord has ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals. May we do our work well and be able ministers of God’s Word and Sacrament. Your friend and priest, Noel A.
