THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 2 beginning at the 1st verse.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--in our own languages we hear them speaking about !3

God's deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in 1st Corinthians Chapter12 beginning at the 3rd verse.

No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the !4

manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.’" Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord !5

From The Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Professor Patrick Regan in his book Advent to Pentecost states that the centerpiece of the Eucharist for the Feast of Pentecost is the reading which recounts the spectacular eruption of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish feast of Pentecost, fifty days after Passover. (Acts 2:1-11) The author of the Acts of the Apostles tells that on that occasion Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2: 3-4 Regan offered the view that despite the dramatic character of the Pentecost story, the Acts 1:1-11 passage does not link the outpouring of the Spirit to the resurrection and ascension of Christ. He points out rather that we look to the the Gospel according to St. Luke, since the Lukan focus is on the interior action of the Spirit within the individual- purifying and enlightening the heart. We may then discover an element of the link between the coming of the Holy Spirit with crucifixion, resurrection and ascension in the gospel tradition. (John 14:23-31). Jesus assures his disciples at the Last Supper that the Paraclete to be sent by the Father, would bring to their minds all that he said to them and all that he had accomplished. !6

Regan explains that the words of Christ are of great importance theologically because they show that the bestowal of the Spirit is the consequence of Christ’s glorification, whether understood as his death, his resurrection, or his enthronement at the Father’s right hand. When we call to mind the paschal mystery, which is observed every time we celebrate the Holy Mass, we must be aware that we are participating in the events of our salvation, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings these saving acts of Christ's glorification to mind and keeps them contemporary; else they would simply form part of Jesus' biography; rather than the means of eternal salvation. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are undivided and always work together and so this unity shines forth across all ages. God almighty in the glorious and undivided Trinity will be celebrated with great joy in the Holy Mass next Sunday - Trinity Sunday.

HEALTH CORNER: BY SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d WHAT IS METABOLIC SYNDROME? Have you ever heard of the term 'metabolic syndrome'? This is the term used for a group of metabolic risk factors that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and other health problems. Having one factor puts you at risk of serious disease but this is greater with a combination of factors. An individual must have at least three of following risk factors to be diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome: 1. Low HDL or 'good' cholesterol i.e. less than 40mg/dL for men and less than 50mg/dL for women. Remember HDL cholesterol acts like a scavenger in the bloodstream and removes LDL or 'bad' cholesterol. 2. Abdominal obesity or having an 'apple' shape increases the risk of heart disease. Excess fat in the stomach puts you more at risk that excess fat in other areas of the body. 3. High blood pressure whereby your systolic blood pressure (top number) is 130mmHg or greater or diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) is 85mmHg or greater. If your blood is pushed against your arterial walls at constant elevated pressure, it can damage your heart and lead to plague build-up. 4. High triglyceride level; this is a high level of a type of fat in your blood. 5. High fasting blood sugar Metabolic Syndrome is a serious condition but it is treatable and your can reduce your risks by eating better, reducing your body fat percentage , keeping physically active and taking prescribed medication to control blood pressure, cholesterol and other symptoms.
