ROUND 1 RACE REPORT PAUL FLEMING
2016 is here…
well it’s actually been here for a few months now but 2016 Dade City Motocross racing IS HERE!!!
M
arch 12th, 2016 marked the official start of the 2016 Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series at Dade City Motocross. It’s a new year of racing which means a fresh start for 2016, new track layouts, new bikes, new classes for some, a new covered starting gate, new sponsors, and a new series format. The new format consists of two 10 round championship series where you can win one or if you’re good enough you could win both of the series and it all leads up to an epic final, one day championship race for all the marbles. And if you can win both series and the final triple crown round December 3rd then you could end up with $500 on top of everything at the awards banquet. We witnessed an exciting battle out front in the Peewee Stock 4-6 class during both motos. Battling for the lead both times out, Jaidann Lewis went 2-2 taking the overall. Moto 2 winner Hunter Foster who went 4-1 while Moto 1 winner, Colten Shives couldn’t find his groove and end round 1 going 1-6. But the 24 of Shives found his moto 2 mojo in the 50cc 4-6 class when he backed up his moto 1 win going 1-1 and taking the overall at round 1 of the Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series. Elijah Evans looked good going 2-2 and keeping Shives honest in both motos. Third place finisher Carson Wood had a good round 1 too, but I think Wood could have done a little better if he stops focusing on his crash celebration and focuses on getting back up and going fast like the 26 does. At round 1 we saw a strong presence from our neighbors to the north taking numerous moto wins and a few overalls. Sabastien Racine was a strong part of the Canadian invasion taking both moto wins in the 65 open with Justin Burge (3-2) and Cedric Racine (4-3) rounding out the podium. And then in the 65 9-11 Sebastien lead the way to a 2-1 overall over Tanner Scott’s 1-2 with Hunter Scott in Third with Canadian riders taking the top 5 overall spots. The Open Class had what looked like a great battle shaping up between the 49 of Jerry Kopoian and the 99 of Michael Clarke. Immediately these two found each other after the gate drop and it was on! Clarke got the holeshot and went to the lead but Jerry quickly mounted an attack and took the top spot. We watched these two exchange the lead two or three more times before Kopoian’s Yamaha would lose traction on a landing going into a turn and put the defending 2015 Sponsor Cup Lites Champ on the ground and unfortunately out of racing for the night. NOOOOOOOO!!!! There were numerous close battles for the lead in multiple classes like the 125 two stroke class where Tyler Lang (2-1) and Seth Brown (1-2) split the wins at round 1 with Lang taking the win and overall in moto 2. There was also a tight battle in the Junior Girls class where the 162 of Isabella Contopoulo took the win just like #94 Shelby Quast in the Womens class, both ladies taking their KTMs to 1-1 finishes on the night. With a new series means new classes for some and for some of last year’s peewee riders that means it’s time for FAST 50s. Colt Golembeski showed up at the Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series ready to take some names. Colt the Bolt really showed some speed at the opening round winning multiple motos and overalls on his 50 and 65 but there may be a problem…he had fun all night long and nothing is worse for the competition when a racer is gaining confidence winning and happy doing it. I’m sure two time champ in 2015 Gavin Brooks will have something to say as the series moves on and he gets more comfortable. Sponsors Cup Lites was a battle between Kyle Chessman and eventual winner William Klee. Moto 1 was close
with Wild Bill Klee riding smooth and fast from gate drop to checkers with the fast 38 of Kyle Cheeseman pressuring him all moto long. Moto 2 was even closer, the Yamaha of Cheeseman was all over Klee’s Husky but the mistake came from the 38 and Kyle slid out in 180 turn pinning his leg under the bike in the process, dropping him back in the pack. Bill Klee rode both motos great earning both moto wins taking the round one overall. In the Sponsors Cup 450 class it was the return of Michael Clarke as he came out to round one to take both moto wins ahead of Bill Klee and Greg Lehto. We saw Kayden Groves and Drake Sadler both go 1-1 taking round 1 overalls in their 65cc age groups. In the 65 classes we saw the Groves Racing Team take the overall and after a strong showing in moto 1 it seemed liked Caleb Groves was looking good at taking an overall in the 85 class for the Groves Racing Team unfortunately a bad moto 2 put the halt on that. Expect Caleb to bounce back at round 2 and battle for the win. Ayden Shive continues to get comfortable on his green machine as he nailed down a first overall in 85 7-11 A and a third overall in the 85 Open at round one. The 85 7-11 B class was easy as 1-2-3 for Jacquel Gonzalez and his Kawasaki going 1-1 and Brandon Coates earn himself a pair of aces in the 85 12-15 A class. Going big in the 85 division was the 116 of Maddax Spatafore winning all of his motos at round 1 of the Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series in the 85 12-15 B and 85 Open classes. 85 Beginner class winners were the 505 of Casey Stapleton and Mason Hronec aboard the 44 Honda. The Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series 250 C was an action packed race with 18 riders and sprinkle in a 250 B class and the pace was intense. Joseph Farrell took moto 1 hole shot and ran up front for the moto win but Will Ballard won the tie and took the overall with the moto 2 win. Surprisingly the 250 C racers were matching the opening pace of the 250 B class for the first few laps. In the 250 B class Zachary Hart made his way around the 21 of Farrell and the 284 Suzuki of Andrew Jones followed in tow moving into the second place spot with Tyler Lang rounding out the top three. In moto 2 it was the 28 of Tyler Lang taking his Yamaha to the front spot with Hart and Jones finishing second and third. Zachary Hart took the overall with a 1-2 moto score to Lang’s 3-1 finish and Jones finished third overall with 2-3. I’m looking forward to this class as the series continues, Lang and Hart put in great races and Jones has such a great style it will be a barn burner once Andrew gets back into the racing groove. Chandler Payne took the overall in 250 Beginner going 1-2 with William “No Numbers” Johnson finishing second going 3-1 and 87 of Chi Chi Bammann riding smooth and consistent to third place with 2-3 finishes. Robert Noa nab a coupe overalls in the Plus 45 and Plus 50 classes all while racing and beating kids half his age. Taking both holeshots along with both moto wins was the 353 of Chris Brice in the Plus 35. Kirkland Jack also nabbed himself a couple of hole shots enroute to 1-1 finishes in the Quad 450 class ahead of second place finisher Kaitlin Gibson and third place finisher Joey Chambers. Supermini winner Christian Dresser rode his Husky to 1-1 moto finishes taking the overall and heading into round 2 with the points lead. Going into round 2 I’m thinking Kyle Cheeseman is going to get his first win of 2016. The 38 was all over the gas at round 1 but unfortunately for him second was the best finish he could turn in. He was super close a couple of times but the closest was Schoolboy moto 1 going into the last turn in the lead only to see 513 Kawasaki of Zachary Hart snatch it away… Round 1 of the 2016 Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series has ended and now the racers have had a chance to get those first racer jitters out of their systems I’m looking forward to round 2. I’m expecting some of the past champions to regain their pace and shake some things up. But could we also see the same winners at round one continue to pad their points lead? Or could we see some more surprise results and some first time winners? Who’s going to win a drum of Renegade Racing Fuel? If you want to find out you’re going to have to show up next weekend at Dade City Motocross for round 2 of the Renegade Racing Fuels Triple Crown Series.

Michael Clarke A great start to the series, Micheal Clake with a strong showing at round one. Sweeping Moto’s 1 and 2 in the Open Class and Sponsor Cup.
“I raced the Open Class and Sponsor Cup. And I didn’t know what to expect going in to round 1 or who was even racing it. I felt confident in myself though and my riding ability. I stayed relaxed and had fun and the night went smooth. “ “For round 2 I plan to have the same mindset. I don’t under estimate my competition and I’m coming in ready to battle. I have confidence in myself and if I stay relaxed, ride the way I know how to, I will do good.” ~Michael Clarke Clarke would like to thank: ActiveRide Suspension, Motostar Graphics, Powerdyne Motors

Return to Racing My dad got me into racing when I was four years old. He took me to Dade City and Randy Yoho taught me how to ride on my pw50. I have been to Loretta’s on a pw50. I won a Dade City Championship in 2000, and I have done all the big Florida Series, Gold Cup, Mini Os, from small bikes to big bikes and have taken home some race wins. Although there was a long gap in racing. I was always around the sport, just wasnt lining up at the gate. Started working, cutting lawns and did some flagging at several different events and tracks. What truly brought me back out and around racing was my girlfriend, Marciniak. I wanted to be a role model for her, she wanted to see me race again, and supporting her racing on the sidelines was making me itch for a return. ~ Andrew Jones
