Exciting news from our sponsor – Devonshire Pine & Oak

Everything you’ll need for your home this season

EAGLE-EYED customers of Devonshire Pine & Oak may have noticed a few changes around its Bideford showroom, and they would be right. Exciting and significant changes are happening for the furniture manufacturer’s retail outlet over the next few months. Work is continuing to make the showroom double its original size, adding another 16,000sq ft of floorspace over two floors. The business plans to offer its valued customers and potential new clients a greater choice of furniture with more displays and accessories too. Stephen Parker, from Devonshire Pine & Oak, didn’t want to give too much away, but said: “It’s a positive step in the right direction. “Keep a close eye in the Journal pages over the coming weeks to find out more!” ●

Ayesha Sharman, director of South West Counties Allotment Association shared her experiences of autumn on the allotment and told us what’s good to eat this season. Derrick Dyer from Eggesford Garden Centre also has some tips on how autumn and winter is the perfect time to get your garden ready for spring. Find out more on page 12. So, grab a cup of tea, curl up in front of the fire and find out how you can make the most of your home and garden this season. ●

COLOURS

PANTONE Color Institute has described this season’s colours as “an umbrella of accord that weaves earthy neutrals with a range of bold colour statements and patterns to reflect a landscape of hope, fun, fantasy and all things natural”. Marsala is Pantone’s colour of 2015.The rich red tone is the perfect hue to create a cosy and rich atmosphere in your home and is striking when used in the colour blocking trend, as described by Julia from Finishing Touches.

Pantone’s Stormy Weather is another dramatic shade and ties in with the “midnight blue” trend seen on page 6. It’s also this season’s take on the spring/summer’s china blue trend, but is more mature and sophisticated.

GP & J Baker fabric @ Finishing Touches

The teal-coloured Biscay Bay is the perfect foil for the depth of Marsala and Stormy Weather, and is fresh, vibrant and full of hope. It also ties in with the “nature” trend on page 8. Also following the natural trend is Desert Sage, a more muted green colour that wouldn’t look out of place in a posh country manor. While neutral in tone, it’s also bright enough to stand on its own and add a splash of personality to any colour palette. Finally, Pantone’s Oak Buff straddles the natural and metallic trends and works perfectly to counter dark, moody tones of autumn and winter. The comforting yellow shade brings warmth and hints that it won’t be too long before spring is on its way again. ●

Clarke & Clarke’s Artbook by Kim Parker fabric @ Finishing Touches

The coolest colours to warm your home JULIA Brookes, owner of South Molton’s Finishing Touches, knows a lot about interior trends, and is just about to celebrate the second anniversary of being in the George Arcade. She has just refitted the shop with more than 60 fabric accounts, with an extensive collection to suit every budget. “Colour trends have crossed over from the fashion world to interiors this season,” she said. “Foliage continues to evolve with Voyage and their country ranges, Prestigious Textiles and Clarke & Clarke all taking this on board. “Porcelain patterns have come over from the china plates and tiles of last season, with William Morris producing fabrics from his tile designs and GP & J Baker producing handprinted linens. “Colour blocking with strong bold single colours, copper and terracotta are on trend this season as well as cobalt blues and navy,” she added. “Geometrics, which have been around since 2003, are still continuing but in more subtle ways with Elanbach producing a new line of weaves in geometric patterns with colour block striking velvets.” Also new in stock at Finishing Touches is recycled interlining which has developed from a background of firmly protecting clothing. The unique interlining is available in three grades for blinds and curtains and offers up to 50% increased thermal retention with a lower weight-to-pole ratio than the standard classic cotton interlinings used currently. This is a conscientious choice of recycling source fibres, reduced heat loss, energy saving and innovative thermal properties which Julia said gives her clients a luxurious feel and a return on their investment. However, she still stocks standard linings and interlinings for traditionalists. Julia added: “There is a lot of legislation over blind safety and we support and work by the BBSA ‘make it safe’ campaign.” Julia also thanked her existing clients who have supported the business, and added she will be closing her books at the end of October, which should be bore mind for any work that needs doing prior to the Christmas period. ●

“There’s a big eclectic trend, where nothing is matching and designs are striking.”

COMFORT zone

IT’S a fact acknowledged across the country that autumn and winter mean cosy, snuggly fabrics, and this season is no different. However, there’s a touch of luxury and indulgence about this season’s throws, rugs, cushions and fabrics. Strokable, soft and comfortable textures are just as important as warmth. But, while luxury is the aim, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Julia Brookes at Finishing Touches, South Molton, has a great tip for getting the luxury feel in your home, even if you’re on a budget. “Keep your rooms neutral and change the furnishings,” she said.

Emma Paisey, Daisy Park

“You can have neutral floors and furniture and add splashes of colour and pattern on the lampshades, cushions, curtains and ‘hero’ pieces of furniture which give the room a completely different feel.” Sanderson fabrics, available at Finishing Touches, are perfect for this. The range of designer fabrics includes stylish yet classic designs printed on cotton, linen and silk and are suitable for curtains, upholster and soft furnishing. The Luynes fabric, with its small scale pattern of contrasting squares in a linen weave is a perfect fabric for upholstery, and when teamed with a rich colour scheme, creates a luxurious feel.

Follow the

PATTERN

COMFORT is important this season, but too many soft and muted tones can make a room look flat. That’s why it’s important to add contrasting patterns to interest the eye. While last season, patterns were uniform stripes, this season anything goes – it’s all about finding a pattern that works for you. For a cosy and sophisticated English countryside vibe, try fabrics in gingham or large checks. Sanderson’s Bramley Checks fabric, available at Finishing Touches, South Molton, gives perfect quintessential look and is a versatile fabric in clean, bright or neutral shades, perfect for curtains and upholstery. Choose a dusky tone for a sophisticated feel. If you’re looking for something a little different, try PiP Studio’s range. PiP Studio’s motto is “Happy products for Happy People”, and its bright colours and unusual patterns will brighten up the darkest winter days. Available at Daisy Park, South Molton, PiP Studio’s Blooming Tails range incorporates repeated geometric fan prints in seasonal hues for a splash of colour that’s eye catching and trendy. Emma Paisey, owner of Daisy Park, agreed that PiP Studio’s styling plays on this season’s trends. “We’ve seen that bold and

striking prints are already popular this season, perhaps because people want to brighten up their homes this autumn and winter,” she said. “There’s also a big eclectic trend, where nothing is matching and designs are really striking and quirky. PiP Studio’s new range really fits in with this.” ●

However, fabrics aren’t the only way to add some luxurious comfort into your home. Carpets also provide fantastic comfort as well as retaining warmth in the home, creating a really cosy feel. Jo Polhill, from Corner Stores Carpets in Bradworthy, found that, like interior design, carpets are following a neutral palette this season. “This year neutrals are probably still this season’s favourite with rich neutrals being a good autumn colour, but greys are becoming very popular too,” she said. She also has some advice on creating a luxurious feel with flooring. “Texture carpets with a loop pile are also popular at the moment, giving a slightly different look and feel, and creating a cosy texture underfoot,” she added. “If you don’t want a carpet, the same effect can be created with rugs.” ●

Interior design trends Moody

BLUES

WITH the nights drawing in, incorporating dark, moody blue hues that mirror the dark weather outside, into your home seems like the last thing anyone would want to do, right? Well, think again. While spring/summer ’15 was all about china blues, this autumn/winter midnight, indigo and inky blues are perfect for adding a rich, dramatic feel to your home but can be surprisingly neutral too. Think of the cosy feeling created when you’re safe inside while a big storm rages outside. It’s that feeling that can be mimicked by these colours. Dark and moody blues are great when paired with splashes of this season’s brighter colours including peach, dusty pink and sage. Take inspiration from Broste at Offshore Blooms. Broste is one of Copenhagen’s leading interiors brands, but describes itself more as a “way of life”.

“Broste’s collection uses midnight blues and greys which means it’s possible to bring in other colours.” Kelly Stanier, Offshore Blooms

Broste uses panels of midnight blue contrasted with neutral greys as a rich background for splashes of dusty pink and purple to stand out against. It is then combined with tactile materials such as wood and metal for a cosy feel that is classic and timeless, but also right on trend. Kelly Stanier, owner of Braunton’s Offshore Blooms said Broste’s use of colour was extremely popular within North Devon this season. “The Scandinavians have a good eye for interiors and offer something really good but a bit different,” she said. “Broste’s collection uses midnight blues and greys which means it’s possible to bring in other colours like light pinks and other soft hues.” This interiors trend echoes across homeware too. Cushions in more intense blues add drama to a room, while Broste’s tableware uses the colour more subtly for a sophisticated feel. ●

RENAISSANCE colours, seen everywhere in spring/summer 2015, are back again in the home, but this time in the form of rich metallics. When everywhere is turning cold and frosty, a sense of warm can be recreated in the home through the use of metallic tones including copper and brass. They also mimic the autumn leaves as they turn into rich ochre and red colours. It also ties in with Pantone’s colour trends of Marsala and Oak Buff, both providing rich and warming tones to liven up even the coldest winter day. You can get the look from Offshore Blooms in Braunton, Cath Kidston’s range at South Molton’s Daisy Park, or copper and terracotta fabrics at Finishing Touches, also in South Molton. If metal doesn’t warm you up, try bringing neutral wood tones into your home with Devonshire Pine & Oak’s range of furniture. ●

SPRING/summer 2015 saw botanics as a huge interior design trend, and this season is no different. Perhaps due to the desire to bring the outside in when daylight is sparse in the winter, organic prints, floral designs and succulent plants within the home are set to be a huge trend this season. It doesn’t just extend to plants, though. Woodland animals including owls, hares and foxes will also appear on prints in every aspect of the home, maybe because they add a cute, cosy feel to the home, and are slightly quirky too. Emma Paisley, owner of Daisy Park in South Molton, has already spotted the trend. “Emma Bridgewater’s owl plates incorporate striking midnight blues with owl patterns and have already flown right of the shop,” she said. “Cath Kidston’s mugs feature floral, leafy and woodland designs which extend to picnic

NATURE take its course ware and household items like tea towels too. The yellow and grey colours add to the woodland feel.” Also available at Daisy Park is PiP Studios’ bedding, which features delicate floral designs and more striking mountain prints in greens and blues. “Organics, flowers, botanicals and rich colours are a huge trend throughout all of our ranges,” added Emma. Sanderson’s fabrics are also taking inspiration from the great outdoors, featuring floral patterns, birds and owls too, but in muted greens, blues,

beige and other neutral tones. At Offshore Blooms in Braunton, succulents are hugely popular for anyone wishing to bring the outdoors in this season – literally. “Our Clive range features hanging pods that bring floral and organic influences into the home,” said owner Kelly Stanier. “People love succulents, one – because they’re easy to care for, but also because they sit well with soft colours in the home.” “They’re quite a trend at the moment,” she added. ●

Autumn is

Get in the garden

GREAT for gardening THE summer bedding plants in the hanging baskets are starting to fade and the heavy morning dew is making it hard to mow the lawn – it must be autumn, writes Derrick Dyer from Eggesford Gardens. We are entering a busy time for the gardener with lots of jobs to do before the garden becomes dormant over winter. Work that you do now should ensure a really good display in spring and early summer. Spring flowering bulbs give exuberant, colourful displays at a time when there is not

much else in flower. Not only are they easy to care for but are great value and you can find varieties to suit most areas of the garden. So whether you want a natural look with daffodils and crocus coming up through the grass, a formal border of tulips standing to attention, or some delicate iris in pots on the patio, now is the time to choose and buy your bulbs. There is a great range at Eggesford Garden Centre and it’s a good idea to pick your bulbs early as you get the best choice. Shrubs, trees and soft fruit

are also best planted in autumn – take advantage of the warm damp soil so that the roots become established before the cold weather. Don’t let any bare patches in the veg plot go un-planted. Sow broad beans, garlic and onion sets for over wintering – this will give you an earlier crop next year. If you have a greenhouse or cold frame you can also sow sweet peas from seed to get an earlier show too. If you have any questions about autumn gardening then call in for a chat with our friendly helpful staff at Eggesford Gardens. Why not combine your visit with a stroll through Eggesford Forest. There are several lovely woodland walks nearby and Eggesford Gardens is an ideal starting point for your stroll. With the Gardens Restaurant serving everything from full meals through to tempting cream teas and ice cream, why not call in for a visit?

Allotment produce in autumn

AS another gardening year draws to a close it’s harvest time on the allotment. This is probably my favourite time as you hopefully start to see that all your hard work has paid off. If you visit the allotments now, you will see a colourful array of seasonal fruit, vegetables and flowers. These can include runner beans, potatoes, carrots, leeks, cabbages and onions, tall colourful majestic dahlias and the pumpkin patch full of weird and wonderful gourds ripening in time for Halloween, all lovingly grown from a humble seed. At the moment it’s all about the beans. This year we built a runner bean tunnel over half of the pathway that runs down the middle of our allotment. The whole structure is now covered in beans and full of the sound of many bees busy pollinating the flowers. Picking them all is a job I’m having to do every few days now so you get them at the right size and picking regularly encourages more beans to grow. Another much anticipated treat has to be corn on the cob and this year’s first pickings are awesome – large full cobs that when cooked are nothing like shop bought corn at all. Instead, they are bursting with sweet juicy flavour made even better with the addition of real butter and a little salt. All our produce is picked, prepared,

cooked and frozen within an hour to make sure it’s at its absolute best. There is still a lot of produce growing on the plot – I have fruit trees groaning under the weight of apples and plums, ripening pumpkins and squashes of all shapes and sizes, main crop potatoes still waiting to be lifted and leeks, sprouts, kale, cabbages and broccoli all coming on nicely. Storing all this produce is always a bit of a problem and my freezer by now is pretty much ready to burst. I have sacks of potatoes, onions on a rack in my outhouse drying along with garlic and chillies, ripening tomatoes, marrows, courgettes and butternut squash. I’ve made jams, chutneys, soups and pies, squirrelling as much as I can away to enjoy over the winter months. This is what growing your own is all about, being resourceful and not wasting anything. in the sky and temperatures start to drop. Leaves are changing colour and beginning to fall and you are likely to get the first early frosts. At this time of year the work on the allotment is primarily about clearing away, composting and getting ready to put the plot to bed for the winter. It is a time for weeding, adding compost or wellrotted manure and adding lime where it is needed. Also for making a note of where this year’s crops grew to help you plan rotations and allocate space for next year’s produce. It’s all go you know! You have also got time to sow a hardy green manure which utilises any bare patches of earth and stops weeds taking over. Here’s to cosy nights by the fire and a steaming bowl of home-made butternut squash soup. Ayesha is the director and CEO of the South West Counties Allotments Association. AUTUMN is rotivator and chainsaw season, and North Devon Mowers are ready, stocking all types of machinery in its large unit in Upper Daddon Court, Clovelly Road Industrial Estate, Bideford. The garden machinery business is run by husband and wife duo Rich and Lyn Cornick who have taken on a new member of staff this year, Sprocket the dog is guarding the office as usual when he can stay awake. New apprentice Corey Harris has joined the team after two years at college, and is currently specialising in petrol machinery servicing. “Corey is joining us to be hands on in the workplace, said Lyn. North Devon Mowers specialises in the sales and servicing of petrol garden machinery, with brands such as John Deere, Mountfield, Husqvarna and Mitox still in stock. For one week only, the business is offering 10% off all Mitox machines, starting from September 28. There are also many Husqvarna deals to be discovered if you pop into its large showroom.
