Incredibly this will be the 21st anniversary of the popular festive fayre and the organisers predict this year’s show could be the best one yet. For three fun-packed days the Devon County Showground hosts an amazing range of retailers, manufacturers, craftspeople, wholesalers and importers who come from far
and wide. They transform the vast 50,000sq.ft Westpoint hall into an Aladdin’s cave of wonderful gift ideas and essential Christmas items. Meet many leading local craft-workers with an incredible diversity of jewellery, artwork, ceramics, fabrics, wood and glass. They will be showing their latest unique creations – ideal for that really special gift. Some of the craftworkers will be demonstrating their skills at the fayre so you can watch them at work. Saturday 10 Dec – Monday 2 Jan
Book now & make w i s h r es come u o y true this Christmas! TAKE a magic carpet ride this Christmas with North Devon Theatres’ pantomime Aladdin, from December 10, 2016 to January 2, 2017. North Devon Theatres and Imagine Theatre present an Aladdin’s cave of entertainment for the festive season, with fabulous sets and costumes, superb song and dance routines and lots of laughter for the whole family. In Old Peking, poor young boy Aladdin struggles to make a living with his mum Widow Twankey and silly brother Wishee Washee in their Chinese laundry…if only he could make his fortune and then all their dreams would come true. Then he meets the beautiful princess and longs to win her heart, but how can he when the law decrees she must marry a prince? And when the dastardly Abanazar gets involved it looks like Aladdin’s dreams may never come true. But then he finds an enchanted lamp and a magical adventure begins… This year’s talented cast include all-time favourites. Returning from last year are Ian Hallard and Matthew Baldwin, and the Queen’s Theatre are also delighted to have both Jenny Perry and Sophie Ayers returning too. Jenny, who played Dandini at the Queen’s Theatre last Christmas will be going from villain to hero as she takes on the title role of Aladdin – the poor Chinese boy seeking both riches and the hand of the Princess, while Aladdin’s love, the Princess, will be played by Sophie Ayers who performed the title role of Cinderella last year. Also joining the cast will be Aaron Gibson as the larger than life Genie of the lamp. The genie has sent us this personal message: “Hello panto goers, I am the Genie of the lamp,
able to grant wishes to whoever is in the possession of the magical lamp. “News has reached me that soon I am going to be released from the lamp in somewhere called Barnstaple – I have no idea what to expect as it sounds like a large stationary container! Oh well, it may not be the Caribbean but it beats being stuck in this cramped lamp!” The Queen’s Theatre is also putting on two extra performances for audiences with additional needs – a relaxed performance and signed performances. A relaxed performance is about welcoming people with additional needs (including autistic spectrum conditions and/or learning disabilities) and, crucially, their families and friends to a performance where those needs are accounted for with a more relaxed atmosphere and some changes to the production itself. These changes could include the lowering of lights and reducing of any loud noises in the performance. With this type of performance, it is expected that the audience may move around, make noises and interact with the performers. The relaxed performance is on Wednesday, December 14 at 4.30pm and this performance is also signed. At signed performances, a trained BSL interpreter is present to interpret the script and language used by the performers at the same time it is being performed. The interpreter will be positioned to one side of the stage. These take place on Wednesday, December 14 at 4.30pm and Monday, December 19 at 6pm. For further information or to book, call the Box Office on 01271 32 42 42 or visit www.north devontheatres.org.uk.

one not to be missed. The town will be transformed when radio DJ Simon Bates flicks the switch on the illuminations at 6.30pm. And to make sure Christmas begins with a bang, there will be a fireworks display to music from the movies at 7pm. “Last year we had 5,000 people here and we had a terrible storm,” said town clerk Andrew Coates. “The firework display was about to be cancelled but the wind dropped. It was a real success. “If the weather is fine we should double that figure this year,” he added. “Everyone is welcome.” But the fun doesn’t stop there. There’s a full programme of events in South Molton leading up to the big day.
The popular Fatstock show takes place in the Pannier Market on Sunday, December 4. As well as the competition of classes and livestock, the market is filled with many local businesses with lots of last minute shopping ideas for Christmas from children’s toys, wildlife photography and art to handmade gifts and jewellery. Christmas markets will be taking place in the Pannier Market every Thursday and Saturday until Christmas – perfect for finding a unique gift. Father Christmas will be visiting the town on December 10, with a grotto on December 10 and 17. A craft and gift market will be upstairs in the pannier market on December 10, too.

TORRINGTON has a wide range of Christmas events to get you in the festive spirit. Torrington’s Christmas lights will be in the capable hands of the town’s Cavaliers. A statement on the Cavaliers’ website reads: “Our annual request came from the town council to put up the town’s Christmas lights in the square.” Although there is no official switch-on event, the lights and tree will be put up at the end of November. On Wednesday, December 14, The Big Sing returns to Torrington. The event has been going for more than 10 years and gives the town an opportunity to sing Christmas carols – whether they are churchgoers or not. All proceeds to go the Mayor’s charities. The event starts at 7pm in the Pannier Market. There will be more carol singing on December 15 when Great Torrington School holds its annual Christmas concert. Starting at 7pm at St Michael and All Angels’ Church, the concert is the highlight of the school’s term and features a wide variety of music by pupils and staff. The Cavaliers will also be putting on its annual Cavaliers Christmas Grotto in Torrington Square on Saturday, December 17. Here, the young children of Torrington can meet Father Christmas and his Cavalier helpers and receive a free goodie bag. There will also be hot mince pies and hot mulled cider for the adults. Father Christmas will be in his grotto from 10am until 1pm. There will be free Christmas parking in Torrington too, so you can make the most of the festive season. Sydney House car park will be free to park in on Saturday, December 3, Saturday, December 10, Saturday, December 17, Friday, December 23 and Saturday, December 24. ILFRACOMBE will get into Christmas in style, with a whole weekend of celebrations. Friday, November 25 will see the whole town lit up at one of the largest events in the town’s diary – last year attracting more than 5,000 spectators. This year it aims to be larger than ever following the yearlong fundraising campaign by the Combe Christmas Committee. The Lighting of the Lights begins with a lantern parade by local school children, leading down to the war memorial. The cast of A Christmas Carol will perform, Christmas songs will be sung and Father Christmas is rumoured to be making
an appearance. The lights will be switched on at 6.15pm byRoy Goodwin, Ilfracombe town crier – a true local celebrity. Following the switch-on, shops on Church Street and the High Street will be open for late night shopping, plus there will be pop-up performances and a selection of local street stalls. Usually on a Wednesday, the event has been moved to a Friday to allow families to make the most of the evening. Then, on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27, Ilfracombe will turn into a winter wonderland for The Combe Christmas Winter Weekend. The free event will be held for the first time and takes place at Roper Road Car Park. There

Saturday’s celebrations begin at 11am and include the Fore Street Christmas Market, Santa’s Grotto, live music, food and drink vendors, bouncy castles and rides for kids. In the evening, Ilfracombe will get into a party mood with music from function band Sonic Fusion between 7pm and 9pm. Children can enjoy the Christmas magic on Sunday with a disco between midday and 2pm, workshops by local groups, a Christmas circus, a carol service and festive music. WITH a visit from Father Christmas, gingerbread decorating and crafts, The Milky Way is a one-stop shop for all things Christmas. On December 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23, Father Christmas and his elves will be visiting in their grotto. Children will also receive a free gift included in the standard cost to enter the park. There’s also a chance to try gingerbread decorating and for crafty children and adults, why not make your own personalised baubles and Christmas cards? Tara Stanbury, partner at The Milky Way, said: “One really popular idea is to put your little ones’ hand prints onto a bauble. It creates a lovely, personal decoration that is bound to take pride of place on the tree for years to come.”
In addition to the extra festive fun, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained at this multi award-winning attraction this Christmas including the dodgems, Clone Zone, train ride, rollercoasters and Timewarp play area. Younger children will particularly love the innovative Little Stars play centre, with its space themed soft play, sensory room for babies, dressing-up and role play pizzeria. If you haven’t visited in the winter for a while, you might not know that there’s now a new restaurant serving healthy options in addition to popular family food. What’s more, environmentally friendly heating has now been added to much of the park, so The Milky Way really is a great day out for the whole family this winter.

ONE North Devon shop is aiming to be “top of the marmalade tree” this Christmas – with a whole host of tangy treats on offer. Two-time winner at the World Marmalade Awards, The Proper Marmalade Shop, on Ilfracombe’s Belgrave Promenade, has devised delicious presents all based around the citrus condiment. Owner Victoria Cranfield explained: “We are trying to keep it local. We are matching marmalade with a little bar of soap, and doing a special three-pack fusion of jam and marmalade – a marriage between the two. It’s a nice way of using local fruit while keeping it marmaladethemed. “I’m even doing Christmas ice cream which tastes just like Christmas pudding.” The idea behind her marmalade is certainly unique – coming under two categories: “proper” and “improper”. All of the marmalade is made the “proper” way, which means hand-
’ IF you want veg from the true experts this Christmas, look to Riverford Organic Farmers. They’ve been growing and delivering their iconic veg boxes for almost 30 years; what they don’t know about veg isn’t worth knowing. Riverford choose their varieties for flavour and grow them slowly to result in the carrotiest carrots and potatoes like your Grandad used to grow. From just-pulled parsnips to field-fresh sprouts to organic gammon and slow-grown turkey, their Christmas range includes everything you may need for a festive feast, all delivered free to your door in the few days before Christmas. Jo and Phil Limb, who deliver Riverford veg boxes, meat and more to families across North Devon, look to have their work cut out this Christmas, as orders have already been coming in thick and fast. Riverford founder and farmer Guy Watson said: “We deliver
made from fresh fruit and simmered until the peel is soft before boiling to a set with sugar. The “improper” category includes an array of exciting and unusual flavours – and not all of them are designed to be spread on toast. Lemon and horseradish marmalade with honey-roast ham, or hot orange marmalade with duck are just two combinations made possible by Victoria’s “improper” approach to combining flavours. Festive gifts on offer encompass the “toe of the stocking” through to a “complete cross section” at the “emporium of marmaladiness”. “Everyone who likes citrus will like something with us,” Victoria added. Most presents are around the £10 mark, with an emphasis on keeping it economical and local. The Proper Marmalade Shop is open from 11am to 4pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until Christmas Eve.
– everything needed for a fantastic, ethically produced meal. We really are veg nerds and like any other time of year, don’t believe in boring boiled veg at Christmas. With a combination of our wonderful vegetables and our festive recipes and tips, we hope to have customers all over the country serving up veg that shines this December.” The range of hampers feature organic veg, Riverford mince pies, Christmas puddings, cheeses, wine and much more. There are vegetarian options, plus Boxing Day and gift hamper boxes. Visit www.riverford.co.uk to see the range or call 01364 661 635.
