TO LOVE WEDDINGS
N
orth Devon has romantic scenery, expert local suppliers and a friendly and welcoming attitude – what more could you want for your big day? Inside Love Weddings 2015 we’ve got the very best wedding venues, top tips for getting dressed up and a gallery of the region’s greatest wedding photographers. When I spoke to local venues and suppliers, they all agreed while brides and grooms are looking for magic and glamour, this year they want to infuse the day with their own
personalities, resulting in a very unique event indeed. Each version of unique ranges from unusual styles of dresses and blue suits, to bling bouquets and venues off the beaten track – even wedding cakes made out of wheels of cheese! I caught up with a couple who shunned traditional wedding favours, deciding instead to buy their guests a lottery ticket with the money going right back into the North Devon community. However, if it’s a traditional wedding you’re after we also have stunning castles, beautiful white dresses and classic cars to get you to the church on time. With unique and traditional qualities in equal measure, there’s no better place to get married than North Devon. I hope you have lots of fun planning your wedding and I wish you a wonderful wedding day!

Finding the perfect
Dress
B
rides getting married in 2015 are spoilt for choice when it comes to the dress. It can be daunting trying to navigate through hemlines and sleeve lengths, not to mention different fabrics, finishes and even (dare we suggest) different colours. Here’s our guide to this season’s hottest wedding dress trends to make choosing the perfect dress that little bit easier.
What’s Hot in 2015
Beach Babe
Beach dresses are perfect for the bride with a destination wedding in mind. These dresses are breezy and beautiful and feature asymmetric hemlines and peekaboo lace for a more casual wedding vibe. Angela says: “Shorter, beach-style dresses are popular this season – maybe because of destination weddings, or because brides want something less traditional this year.”
Angela from The Little Dress Shop says: “This season we are seeing brides opting for more unusual dresses”. “In 2015 we are stocking many more dresses with straps, as that’s what brides are asking for. We are also selling more short dresses than ever before, as well as dresses with ruching and scalloping. “While we stock many traditional dresses, this year it’s the more unusual styles that are popular.” North Devon brides are taking inspiration from the catwalks, where unusual wedding dresses were frequently showcased.
Why White?
Interesting necklines
While different coloured dresses are big on the catwalk, it seems that North Devon brides like keeping it traditional when it comes to the colour.
Romantic off-the-shoulder necklines and barely-there straps are big dress trends for this wedding season. Many designers fitted cap and illusion sleeves or crafted oneshoulder sleeves to create pretty and unusual necklines. Marchesa showcased a pretty Grecian silk chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline that is dainty and delicate, while dresses with high collars and more unusual necklines are also popular this season. Christos and Neema Khan designed wedding dresses with spaghetti straps which are subtle but still offer more support than a strapless dress.
Many dresses seen on the catwalk this season strayed from traditional white, favouring more unusual colours instead. Last season, girlie brides played it safe with blush pink but more unexpected colours are in for this season, like pistachio at Monique Lhuillier. However, Angela says: “We have sold more white dresses this season than any other colour, something that we haven’t seen for quite a while.”
The Little Dress Shop in Northam is a treasure trove of wedding dresses, stocking everything from beaded bodices and fishtail skirts to traditional dresses and all of this season’s trends. With 30 years of experience and knowledge, the team have got everything you need to look amazing on the big day. Dresses range from size 6-30 and with a sale rail always wellstocked, as well as lots of designer labels to choose from, there’s something to suit every size and budget.
Mother of the

he mother of the bride is an important role in any wedding, and often the pressure is on to look your best. Many stylists agree that the mother of the bride is a hard role to dress for: you want to look glamourous and confident, but it’s sometimes hard at such a formal and important occasion. However, there are many ways to look both and chic and comfortable, no matter your age, size or budget. Try and choose separate pieces that you can mix and match to create a look that’s not only comfortable but is as unique as you are. Angela from The Little Dress Shop says: “Classic suits and shawl jackets are popular this year, with mothers taking style inspiration from the Royal Wedding”. As Angela says, the Kate Middleton-effect is still happening four years after the Royal Wedding, but not so much for the bride – many mothers are inspired by Carole Middleton’s elegant Catherine Walker pastel
blue creation. To create a classy and timeless outfit that’s memorable for all the right reasons, choose a suit skirt with a jacket. Angela agrees: “Pastel colours like pinks, purples and blues are very popular for mother of the bride outfits this year”. “In other years, mothers have been opting for flowing dresses, but this year it’s the straighter styles that are proving popular, in fabrics such as heavy lace.” If you’re unsure how to dress for your daughter’s wedding this season, simply choose suit separates in a pastel colour and feel confident and elegant for the whole day. Angela adds: “We also stock a large range of hats and fascinators which have been extremely popular this season – perfect for putting the finishing touch on any outfit.” If you’re still unsure where to begin, pop into The Little Dress Shop and one of the friendly members of staff will help you find the perfect outfit.
M E N S WEAR M
ulling over what to wear for the big day is no longer just the occupation of the bride. While a stylish groom is always in season, these are our picks of 2015’s hottest menswear trends.
Opposites attract Groomsmen styling in 2015 is all about a cohesive blend of different suits, rather than a uniform look. This gives men the chance to stamp their individuality on their outfit and choose something they actually would wear again. To still look coordinated in the wedding photos try building the look around one central theme, like suits of the same shade, or matching ties or cufflinks.
Nautical but nice
Navy wedding suits still look smart but are less sombre than the traditional black. Take inspiration from Gucci’s 2015 collection and opt for a navy suit with white or red accents, teamed with deck shoes. Fiona from Samuel Daw & Co in Barnstaple says “The most popular suits we are selling this year are navy blue slim-fit lounge suits – they are really fashionable this wedding season”.
Tan-tastic
2015 sees a lot of trends going back to nature and menswear is no different. Tan is the coolest colour of the season and one of the most popular choices for groomswear. This colour is cool no matter whether the wedding is in spring, summer or autumn and looks great outdoors. Fiona adds: “We now have tweed suits in stock which are perfect for a North Devon country wedding and are really stylish”. If you’re still not sure where to begin, Fiona advises “Know what colours are part of the bridal party – we can put an outfit together and pick up the colours in the tie or the waistcoat. And charcoal grey is a popular colour every year!” Hire suits are also available at Samuel Daw & Co, with all the classic styles in a range of colours – perfect for a groom who doesn’t want to break the bank. Fiona says: “We offer fitting by appointment and can mix and match between styles to create the perfect outfit”.

t’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of arranging a wedding, as well as feeling the pressure to look good. But it’s important to make time to look after yourself in the run up to the big day and not wear yourself out before the wedding. Botanical Beauty in Barnstaple having everything you need for total relaxation of the mind, body and soul and will look after you before, during and after the wedding. Botanical Beauty was founded in 2014 by established therapists Shelly McNeil and Hannah Lovering, who combine 16 years of experience in the business. The ladies offer art deco makeup, pre-skincare facial packages and spray tans to help you look your best before the big day. On the day, the ladies will come to your venue for a full bridal makeup package – they’ll even give you a free manicure too. They also offer body treatments for a honeymoon body as well as Geleration longlasting manicures and pedicures to help you look your best long after the wedding is over. Grooms are well-catered for too at Botanical Beauty, with waxing, body treatments and spray tans all available. Hannah says “We recommend that brides come in around six weeks before the wedding for a tailored skin care regime. We also recommend a course of three body treatments to get you looking your best for the wedding – and beyond!” “If you want a relaxing break to de-stress before the wedding, we offer a couples treatment in our specialised room – perfect for some quality time together.” “We also cater for hen parties, where you can have the whole salon and two therapists yourself. You can take your pick from our mini treatments and have a great pampering day with your bridal party.”

he wedding cake is undoubtedly the centrepiece of any wedding meal and cutting the cake as a couple is meant to signify the beginning of your life together, as well as providing a great photo opportunity. But what if you want something different for your wedding, or (dare I say it?) you don’t even like cake? Alternative wedding cakes are a big trend this year and you don’t get much more alternative than a cake made out of cheese. No, not a cheesecake, but big wheels of cheese stacked on top of each other to create a centrepiece that’s delicious, crowd-pleasing and truly different. The Cheese Larder in South Molton offer cheese celebration cakes, perfect for creating
green-fingered bride. If you want to be on trend this year, narrow down the choices by opting for bouquets, buttonholes and centrepieces centred on a natural and organic theme. Debbie from Teasels says: “This year, as last year, country themes are popular. Bouquets in soft and romantic shades tied with raffia have a natural feel. Roses are always popular too.” Take it one step further by adding greenery like grasses and ferns to the floral arrangements, or even add non-floral organic plants such as herbs or acorns for a unique and memorable bouquet.
However if country styling isn’t your thing, adding your own mark to the floral arrangements is encouraged. Debbie adds: “I’ll always try and work with the bride and her budget and accommodate any quirks she wants to add”. “For example, bouquets with bling have been popular this year too, with diamonds and brooches nestled among the flowers.” Debbie has 30 years of experience providing and arranging flowers for weddings. If you are choosing wedding flowers and aren’t sure where to begin, Debbie can help you make your visions a reality.
a mouth-watering centrepiece. They make these stunning creations from local cheeses and are able to cater to any tastes, sizes of party and dietary requirements. Victoria says: “We tend to be led by the customer who often knows exactly what they want. We find out how many people they are catering for and whether the cake is being served as part of the wedding breakfast or at a later buffet and take it from there”. “When the customer comes into the shop we chat through the types of cheeses they would like, show them how it would look and give them samples of different cheeses to take home and try with their family before making the final decision.” “A lot of customers are looking for local cheese for their cakes which proves quite easy to accommodate with the fantastic range of Devon cheeses we have. We can incorporate a goat’s cheese, or a sheep’s cheese into the layering for the guests who cannot tolerate cow’s milk products.”
If you’re not sure where to begin when choosing your cheeses, Victoria has some expert advice: “We normally advise a hard cheese to sit as the base of the cake – either a round of cheddar or the Cornish Yarg which is very attractive with a covering of green nettle leaves. We then chat through blue cheeses and semi-hard layers before arriving at the softer cheeses towards the top. Brides often like to top the cake with a heart and this can be made from the burgundy covered Godminster organic heart or a soft Sharpham brie heart which we order in especially. Victoria is also an expert at putting the final decorative touches on the tower of cheese. “As the majority of cheeses are handmade by small artisan producers they all have attractive rustic rinds in a variety of different shades that look fantastic when layered up.” All you need to create your cheesy centrepiece is to drop into the shop and talk to Victoria.
N o rth D evon Hospice
A wedding is a great opportunity to celebrate the love between two people and spend a day dedicated entirely to the happy couple. When all eyes are on the bride and groom and the day is themed around their wants and desires, it’s a thoughtful gesture to give something back to the region in which they are tying the knot. The North Devon Hospice cares for and supports thousands of people each year, promoting the relief of symptoms among people with life-limiting illnesses. In order to raise the necessary funds to do its amazing work, the charity holds a lottery every Friday. There are thirty five cash prizes up for grabs each week, from £5 to the £1,000 jackpot. Lottery tickets cost just £1 and the money goes right back into the community. Claire and Allan Jones from Barnstaple got married on August 30 2014 at Saunton Sands Hotel. They bought their 30 guests North Devon Hospice lottery tickets as a wedding favour and also used the tickets as name cards at the wedding meal. Claire says: “We didn’t want to spend lots of money on trinkets that our guests wouldn’t remember. Allan’s grandfather was supported by a similar hospice in Wales and passed away before we got married, so wanted to do something to remember him on our wedding day”. “I’ve worked in care for many years and now work on the maternity ward at the North Devon District Hospital. All of our guests, including my friends from work thought it was a great idea. It’s a good way to give something back and support a local charity – you never know when the service might be needed by you and your family.”
The North Devon Hospice provides specialist palliative care for patients with progressive illnesses, and the adults and children who are close to them. It gives personal care to patients at the end of their lives and support to their families at home. It also provides support for patients who have been diagnosed with life-limited illnesses and provides advice, support and education to communities, organisations and healthcare professions who are responding to illness, death and loss. It believes in providing support for the whole family as well as treating each patient as an individual. It costs more than £4.5million a year to provide the incredible service and it relies heavily on charitable donations to operate. Alex and Edward are getting married in Surrey on June 20 2015 and have bought lottery tickets as wedding favours for their 90 guests. Alex says: “A few years ago, my grandad was taken ill quite suddenly and went to the North Devon Hospice. He sadly passed away and I wanted to buy the lottery tickets to acknowledge the excellent care he received, as well as remember him on our wedding day.” “The staff at the Hospice were so good, not just with my grandad but with all of us and at a really horrible time for my family. They didn’t just look after my grandad, they looked after us too.” “I’m giving the lottery tickets as wedding favours to spread the word about the North Devon Hospice to my guests.” “It’s important for people to know how good their work is.”
