Graphic Identity
Graphic Identity Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy’s main graphic identity, or its “signature,” depicts the school’s brand and represents the institution to the outside world. Since it was introduced in 2008 by the school, it has been critically important that the NDPMA signature and its variations be appropriate and consistent. This and the following pages are for NDPMA staff, faculty and commercial partners who may be involved in communicating NDPMA’s messages and identity. This manual applies primarily to the “signature,” but also addresses some of the other logos, mascots and symbols that may be used on apparel or sports uniforms. The NDPMA identity was developed to take advantage of the inherent value of the Notre Dame brand. Please use these guidelines to ensure that the school’s visual identity remains consistent in all manner of communication, whether it be in print, on the Internet, or on branded merchandise and collateral.

Identity Elements
Identity Elements The three main elements of the NDPMA visual identity are the mark, color and logotype. Used together, these elements provide a consistent, strong and balanced visual presentation of the school’s academic “signature,” or logo. The main elements: Mark: The mark brings together four main components of the school’s history and roots: the “fleur-de-lis,” which translates to “flower of the lily,” traditionally means perfection, light and life, and oftentimes symbolizes purification upon conversion to Christianity. It also was used on early versions of the flag of France, the Marist Fathers and Brother’s country of origin (Lyon). The interlocking “NDP” represents the founding division of NDPMA, Notre Dame Preparatory School. The stylized “A” and “M” in the lower left represent not only the Marist Academy, but also “Ave Maria,” or “Hail Mary,” a traditional Catholic prayer calling for the intercession of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and is the spiritual foundation of the Boston-based Marist Fathers and Brothers congregation, which founded the school in 1994. And finally the oak leaf and acorn symbolize the school’s location in Oakland County, Michigan. Colors: Green is the predominant color. It is representative of Notre Dame’s local roots and provides a visual reference to the “Irishness” of its nickname. The three remaining colors in the mark are gold, the other main color from the school’s coat of arms; blue, which is Mary’s color; and burgundy, for the Eucharistic blood of Christ. Identity Elements
Identity Elements (continued) Logotype: “Notre Dame” translates literally into “our lady.” But as a brand, Notre Dame evokes strength, tradition, education and Catholic values. The letterforms used in the words “Notre Dame” are based on the Garamond family of type. However, it has been modified and converted into vector art, which should never be altered or substituted. The three divisions of the school are labeled: “Marist Academy,” for the lower and middle division; and “Preparatory School,” for the high school. These two names will be of subordinate brand hierarchy to the dominant “Notre Dame.” Taken together, these three elements present a clear and strong identity that will be associated with the school for years to come. mark logotype

Academic Signature Colors
Academic Signature Colors The official colors of Notre Dame’s visual identity and academic signature have been chosen to work well in a variety of media, from stationery to the Internet. The predominant colors making up the Notre Dame identity are green, or PANTONE (PMS) 357 green, and yellow, or PMS 125. The Notre Dame academic mark, when rendered in full color, also includes PMS 654 blue and PMS 195 red. The mark has been designed to be reproduced with the four colors run at 100 percent— or with four-color process (see below). Acceptable results can be achieved by either of these methods as long as registration tolerances are met. The full-color version of the Notre Dame signature should always be used on stationery and business cards. CMYK equivalents PMS 357

The secondary signature shown below should be used rarely. It is acceptable, however, when space limitations or layout peculiarities call for it.

Signature Don’ts
Signature Don’ts The Notre Dame signature should never be altered, redrawn or modified in any way. The official digital files must be used whenever the signature/logo is reproduced. See examples below of a number of wrong ways to represent the school signature.
Do not combine the mark with a “NOTRE DAME” created in another type font no matter how much you think it matches. “Close” is never good enough.
NOTRE DAME
Unacceptable type font used with mark.
NOTRE DAME
When the four-color square mark is used, do not illustrate “NOTRE DAME” in any color but PMS 357 green.
NOTRE DAME
Do not reposition the elements of the signature in any way but those approved.

Area of Separation
Area of Separation To protect the integrity of the logo, a reasonable amount of negative space must be maintained around the image. An area of separation equal to the height of the “N” in “Notre Dame” should be maintained at all times. This will ensure that the signature stays highly visible and prominent without the interference of other elements on a document.

Brand Hierarchy
Brand Hierarchy The NOTRE DAME signature was designed to allow for maximum flexibility, while retaining a dominant position on many kinds of documents. Shown below are three examples of business cards illustrating how the overall institution and its divisions will identity themselves. NOTE: In general, as a rule of thumb, “NOTRE DAME” must be used when referring to each of the school’s three divisions: NOTRE DAME Preparatory School; NOTRE DAME Marist Academy - Middle Division; and NOTRE DAME Marist Academy - Lower Division. Specifications for business cards, letterhead and envelopes, etc., follow in the “Stationery” section. Leon Olszamowski, s.m. President

School Seal
The NDPMA Seal The Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy seal features elements from the school logo, especially within the shield located on the center of the seal: (1) - the “fleur-de-lis,” which translates to “flower of the lily,” traditionally means perfection, light and life, and oftentimes symbolizes purification upon conversion to Christianity. It also was used on early versions of the flag of France, the Marist Fathers and Brother’s country of origin; (2) - the large, stylized “A” and “M” represent not only Marist Academy, but also “Ave Maria,” or “Hail Mary,” a traditional Catholic prayer calling for the intercession of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and is the spiritual foundation of the Boston-based Marist Fathers and Brothers congregation, which founded the school in 1994; and (3) - the oak leaf and acorn symbolize the school’s location in Oakland County, Michigan.

Contact NDPMA’s athletics office at 248-373-9647 or the NDPMA advancement office at 248-373-2171, ext. 4 (mkelly@ ndpma.org) for usage permission. The official logos for Notre Dame’s athletic department are different than the school’s academic logo. The visual identity and signature have been chosen to work well in a variety of media, but more importantly, on athletic uniforms. The predominant colors making up the Notre Dame athletics’ logos are forest green, or PANTONE (PMS) 357 green, and Vegas gold. More information on color is on the following page. Notre Dame uses primarily two marks for its athletics brand, the most prominent being the ND monogram. For nealry every athletics application, the monogram is used as the primary mark. The leprechaun can also be used for athletic purposes, but, again, the ND monogram is the primary mark. NOTE: The athletics marks should never be used in place of the academic mark and vice-versa. the notre dame athletics monogram
