2014-15 ANNUAL REPORT
N o t r e D a m e P r e p a ra t o r y S c h o o l a n d M a r i s t A c a d e my
As we review the most recently completed fiscal year, 2014-2015, we look back at what was one of Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy’s most productive and successful years. In just about every measurable used for an organization like ours, we come out overwhelmingly on the positive side. As you turn these pages, this will become abundantly clear. But even though this report functions in a practical way as a historical document, we nonetheless prefer to look at it as clear evidence that Notre Dame is well-prepared and wellpositioned—and, yes, on course—to become an even more successful institution of learning for our students.

From Rev. Leon M. Olszamowski, S.M., Ph.D. PRESIDENT
“We believe that we stand on good financial ground... ”
The 2014-2015 school was a year of transitional success. On July 1, 2014, the Marist Fathers of Detroit, Inc.—having purchased the Main Campus at 1300 Giddings Road from the Archdiocese of Detroit and having gifted all building and assets at both campuses to our own local Board of Trustees—transitioned NDPMA to become an independent Catholic school. All fiduciary responsibilities now belong to the Board of Trustees, and the Marist Fathers and Brothers have been retained to operate and provide our Catholic, Marist tradition to the school. We are responsible to The Archdiocese of Detroit only with regard to providing Catholicity on behalf of Archbishop Allen Vigneron and adhering to the general outlines of education as provided by the Archdiocese. The Marists saw fit to take this action to preserve the long-range health of NDPMA. From the point of view of family and friends, this was almost seamlessly transparent, as evidenced by the largest enrollment in our twenty-two years (1,167 student and 145 staff members) at the Prep and Academy. The same wonderful educational package you have come to expect at our campuses, perdures through the changes of July1, 2014. In fact, we have enhanced our building and programs, as evidenced by our new athletic turf and interior upgrades. We thank you for making all this possible. In 2014-2015, we achieved a generous financial surplus, allowing us to do renovations and salt away some of the dollars into our rainy day fund. We believe that we stand on good financial ground, ready to address any future economic dips in the local and national economy. This was all possible because our families have
trusted our school, sending their children to us for education as Christian people, upright citizens and academic scholars; and our friends have continued to see NDPMA as an option for Catholic education worthy of major support. Financial and gift-in-kind support has also increased dramatically over the last several years. We believe we have kept faith with our families and friends by providing the best overall Catholic education possible at an affordable price. We follow the Difference/Value/Price model of education, with the International Baccalaureate programs as our distinctive model for education. Addition of the IB has raised the academic bar. We know it is working because our graduation rate, acceptances to four-year colleges, and our ACT scores continue to rise each year. Many of our students attend a college of choice at the end of secondary school, and many return to NDPMA as alumni, telling us that their first and second year of college was easy because of the advanced nature of our programming. We continue to grow our Marist values, athletic and arts program as well. We are darn close to becoming more than a very good school. All of this costs money; and we are very thankful to our parents and friends for their generous support each year. Our Notre Dame Fund’s growth was excellent this year, allowing us to provide more for our students by way of scholarships, program space, and quality teachers. Again, thank you for your support! As we grow and develop into a mature school, we anticipate moving into a capital campaign within the next year or two to offer more academic space for our students and teachers. Stayed tuned for information on that process as we move forward. We are also in the process of right-sizing our school to optimize what we
4
provide. We do not desire to grow our upper division more than twenty-five students in order to retain a recognizable learning community at the school, but we would like to increase our middle and lower divisions to be able to grow their programs to offer this wonderful education to more students. Again, I offer my heartfelt thanks on behalf of our students, teaching faculty and staff for your generous support of our school and for providing us the wherewithal to fulfill our mission. I pray for God’s blessing on you and your families during the upcoming year. Have a crisp and colorful fall season!
“I offer my heartfelt thanks on behalf of our students, teaching faculty and staff for your generous support of our school and for providing us the wherewithal to fulfill our mission.... ”
Blessings and joy.

From Daron L. Gifford CHAIR / BOARD OF TRUSTEES
“By working together, we will enable the school to move ahead...”
Pope Francis has been quoted as saying “Let us thank all those who teach in Catholic schools. Educating is an act of love; it is like giving life.” If we believe in the Notre Dame experience, then we are truly loving these children and giving them life by supporting their Catholic education. The Marist Fathers, led by Father Leon, resurrected a failed high school over 20 years ago. In that time, the school has survived and grown into a comprehensive JK through 12th grade education, now formally established as Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy. The school is recognized locally and nationally for its educational experience, especially with the implementation of the International Baccalaureate program in all grade levels. As you can imagine, this effort has not been easy to achieve. It has taken thousands of hours of hard work from the Marists, teachers, coaches, students, alumni, parents and others to get to this point. Under the guidance of the Board of Trustees and the Marist Fathers, we have established Notre Dame as an independent Catholic school, with the focus on continuing our mission to “Work with God to form Christian People, Upright Citizens and Academic Scholars.” So, what’s next? As the post-modernist author, William Burroughs, once wrote, “When you stop growing, you start dying.” If we believe in our school, then we need to support its continued growth as a leader in education. Our students and teachers need your commitment to move the Notre Dame education to even higher levels of excellence! Investments will be required, far beyond the annual tuition fees for each child, in a number of critical areas: Technology – the dramatic changes in technology that impact our daily lives are also changing the education in the classroom. As new technologies come on line, we will need to invest so that our students may also keep up and
stay ahead of the world. Teachers – continuing education for the educators will need to be strengthened and grown, so that our teachers may keep up with new and improved teaching methods and ideas. Faith – in a materialistic world that is challenging our Catholic faith, investing even more in religious education will yield invaluable returns in building Christian adults. Extracurricular activities – balanced growth in the individual, between classroom life and outside activities will increase in its importance for building interpersonal and leadership skills… through more academic clubs, competitive sports, performing arts, music and other interests. Building expansion – the building plans reviewed by the Board have included innovative designs for a truly world class education, encompassing additional classrooms for the high school and middle school, expanded science labs, collaboration spaces for students to share knowledge, a performing arts center for concerts, musicals, plays and other events, additional sports facilities including track and field, more elementary classrooms and a gymnasium, and a new Chapel as a potential centerpiece for the building. Notre Dame needs your support to be able to invest and grow in these key areas, to build for the future of the next generation of leaders in the world…our children. By working together, we will enable the school to move ahead, to grow and build Notre Dame into the finest Catholic educational experience in the world. Thank you for your belief in Notre Dame. May God bless you in your act of love by giving life to your children through the Notre Dame education.

Fiscal year 2015 was a good year for the school. Not only did we complete our first year as a 100% financially independent Michigan non-profit educational corporation, we also achieved many academic, athletic and student activity accolades. We remain the only Catholic school in the state of Michigan and the first in the nation to offer the prestigious IB program in all three divisions of the school. Our athletic department continues to improve with multiple conference, league, district and regional championships. We had a baseball player, Luke Shilling, selected by the Texas Rangers in the Major League baseball draft, and our competitive cheer team won their second straight—and the school’s sixth—MHSAA State Championship. “The Killer Bees” FIRST Robotics team was honored as the year’s “Outstanding Robotics Program” for Oakland County, which is one of the most competitive robotics areas in the nation; and our newly formed VEX IQ Robotics Team for the lower division took home a thirdplace trophy at the World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Our award-winning band and choir programs continue to receive highest division honors at state competitions and our theatre program produced four full productions last year, including the popular musical Bye Bye Birdie at the upper division. The Class of 2015 consisted of 180 graduates and were accepted to more than 173 colleges and universities across the nation, including 11 to the University of Notre Dame and 43 to the University of Michigan. The average ACT was 27.2, more than seven points above state and national averages. In fact, we had 52 students score a 30 or higher on the ACT. Perhaps the most impressive statistic is the $20.4 million dollars in college scholarships earned.
Most importantly, Notre Dame continues to grow in strength and character each year. In accordance with our mission, we strive to form good Christian people, upright citizens and academic scholars. We are most proud of the thousands of hours of community service done each year by our students and the tremendous people they become in their adult life. None of this would be possible without the support of each and every alumni, friend, parent and grandparent that support our school each year. Thank you!
“Notre Dame continues to grow in strength and character.”

2014-15 in Review There are simply way too many good news stories about Notre Dame that occured between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015, for us to reproduce in their entirety in an annual report with a limited number of pages. We did, however, go back through those twelve months and summarize a few of those articles to hopefully paint a good picture of the many great things that you helped make possible last year for NDPMA. ND PREP GETS ACCOLADES FROM STATE FOR SPORTSMANSHIP | July 2, 2014 The Michigan High School Athletic Association notified Notre Dame Preparatory School that its athletic program had demonstrated “positive sportsmanship throughout the entire 2013-14 school year,” putting the program in rare company. According to John E. Roberts, executive director of MHSAA, the association received zero negative officials reports of concern, ejection or sportsmanship about Notre Dame Prep during the previous school year. “It is a credit to your student-athletes, coaches, administration, staff and community for demonstrating such positive sportsmanship throughout the entire school year,” Roberts said. Such an accomplishment is very rare, according to school officials. NOTRE DAME’S ANNUAL FUND SETS MULTIPLE RECORDS | July 16, 2014 Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy announced that it has raised a record $467,222 in unrestricted gifts when its 2014 Notre Dame Annual Fund closed on June 30. The fund total, which is comprised of gifts from nearly 1,000 alumni, parents, faculty and other friends of the school, represents a 9.3% increase over 2013 and is the highest amount in school history.
AOD to a Michigan non-profit, tax-exempt educational corporation called NDPMA, which will be governed by the school’s Board of Trustees. The Catholic sponsorship and educational-program management by the Marist Fathers continue at the school as before. All academic, athletic, art and other programs as well as the school’s administration, faculty and staff also continue without change. NEW RESEARCH CONFIRMS IB STUDENTS BETTER PREPARED FOR UNIVERSITY | July 28, 2014 A new research study conducted by Dr. David Conley and a team of researchers from the Education Policy Improvement Center (EPIC) released in July 2014 compared two groups of university students—International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program alumni, such as those who graduated from Notre Dame Preparatory School, and non-Diploma Program alumni—to examine the extent of their academic, social and emotional preparation for college as they transitioned from high school. The findings suggest that IB Diploma Program students are better able to cope with demanding workloads, better able to manage their time and better able to meet expectations placed on them. Statistically, more Diploma Program students persisted through college than students in the non-IB group (98% vs. 91%, respectively). NDPMA was authorized in 2007 to offer the IB curriculum to its students. It currently is the only school in Michigan with all three levels of the IB program.
NOTRE DAME COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF PROPERTY AND ASSETS FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT | July 26, 2014 ANOTHER NDP STUDENT WITH A PERFECT ACT, SIXTH FROM Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy announced NOTRE DAME IN FIVE YEARS | August 7, 2014 that it has closed on the purchase of property, buildings and other Michael Soisson, who is entering his senior year at Notre Dame assets from the Archdiocese of Detroit. Of the 1.8 million students who took the exam, only 1,162 earned a 36. In 2012, Notre Dame’s Eric LaRose and Michael’s brother, Joe Soisson, earned a perfect 36 on their ACT tests. In 2011, Matt Siatczynski scored a 36. In 2010, Jon Sheperd scored a 36, and Ryan McIntosh, who graduated from NDP in 2009, also achieved a 36 on his ACT.
spent four years at NDP arguing with other high school kids as well as debate coaches (our own, those from other schools), judges, my family and innocent bystanders,” he said. “I wasn’t very good at it, but I enjoyed it a lot.” He says high school debate also created just the right personality “imbalance” so that when he got to Princeton and went to an exhibition debate, where four college kids spent an hour brilliantly (and viciously, he notes) one-upping each other about some random subject, he thought, “These are my people.”
MAJOR RENOVATION OF STUDIO ART ROOM COMPLETE | August 7, 2014 The renovation of the A3 studio art room in the upper division of NDPMA has been completed, the school announced in early August 2014. New tables, storage cabinetry and special lighting were among the upgrades to the room, which is home to classes ranging from art foundations and painting to design and digital photography. Head of School Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m., and art faculty members Sandra LewAllen and Ned Devine said a big thank you is due to the major contributors to the project: the Schwabauer and Carballo families as well as the McManus Foundation, all of whom helped to finance the $130,000+ renovation. Notre Dame’s visual art program also features advanced placement art classes and an International Baccalaureate art course. NDP art students routinely earn awards in public and privately sponsored art competitions.
NOTRE DAME ALUM IS HELPING TO BRING HEALTH CARE TO THE WORLD’S NEEDY | September 24, 2014 Clare Lilek ’10 (NDP) graduated from the University of Michigan in May with a major in Women’s Studies and Spanish. She now is in Lima, Peru, as an intern for MEDLIFE, which is a non-profit organization that focuses on bringing health care and preventative care to low-income communities around the world currently focusing on Peru, Ecuador, Panama, India and Tanzania.
PRINCETON AND HARVARD GRAD SAYS NOTRE DAME EXPERIENCE IMPORTANT TO HIM | September 16, 2014 Nick Pilchak graduated from Notre Dame Prep in 2000. He matriculated to Princeton University for his degree in politics, then got a JD from Harvard. But it was his experience at Notre Dame, and most especially his time on the debate team, that helped lead him to his current position as assistant U.S. attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California in San Diego. When Pilchak was a freshman at Notre Dame, Norm Kotarski was starting a debate team and asked Pilchak if he wanted to join. “I
NOTRE DAME COMES TOGETHER TO ‘MAKE IT MATTER’ | September 26, 2014 On September 26, 2014, all three divisions of NDPMA came together on the Pontiac campus to “make it matter.” “Make It Matter Day” is an opportunity for more than 1,150 students and their teachers to focus on the “Christian persons” and “upright citizens” aspects of the school mission. The goal was to make something useful for people in need in the metropolitan Detroit area and in other parts of the world. The students worked on small American flags for veterans and members of the armed forces overseas, packets of materials for children activities in hospitals, and fleece blankets for families in emergencies or for the homeless among many other projects. Many students in Notre Dame’s upper school painted and decorated large plywood panels that will be used as a more attractive alternative for boarding up abandoned houses in Detroit and around southeast Michigan. ONE OF THE LARGEST GROUP OF NDP SCHOLARS HONORED AT ACADEMIC AWARDS CONVOCATION | September 26, 2014 At Notre Dame Preparatory School’s 20th Academic Awards Convocation and National Honor Society Induction held last night at the school’s Pontiac campus, one of the largest group of student scholars in NDP history was honored for their academic achievement. A big crowd of parents, grandparents and friends witnessed

Notre Dame’s seniors, juniors and sophomores receive honors for academic achievement. Many also were inducted into this year’s edition of the National Honor Society chapter. NDP FRESHMAN CHOSEN FOR CONGRESS OF FUTURE MEDICAL LEADERS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. | October 25, 2014 Christian Andre, a freshman at Notre Dame Prep, has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, D.C., on November 14-16, 2014. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists and to provide the resources to help them reach their goal. COMMITMENT: NOTRE DAME AND RUNNING TRACK WERE KEYS TO ALUM CAREER SUCCESS | November 5, 2014 In a relatively young career in medicine, Kyle Jackson ’99 (NDP) has already had his share of success. He’s authored a number of important and well-received journal articles in the field of cancer stem cells and adult stem-cell biology and he’s currently doing some pretty important work with pediatric cancer patients at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. But this success may not have occurred had it not been for some tough, hard work as a member of the Fighting Irish track and field team. In those early days of NDP, the school didn’t have many hurdles available, which was tough for someone like Jackson, who specialized in the low and high hurdles. “We had one, single hurdle,” Jackson recalls. “To practice I would jump over that one hurdle, jog back in a circle and then jump over that same hurdle, again and again. After practice, I would ask the coaches to trust me with the hurdle to take it home on weekends to practice some more. When the end of my senior season came, I medaled at the regional finals and it was one of my proudest moments in high school, because I knew how many scraped knees, pulled muscles and how much hard work had gone into that one moment.”

News Highlights Continued WHAT WOULD MARY CODE? THE ‘HOUR OF CODE’ RETURNED TO NOTRE DAME WITH A FLOURISH | November 18, 2014 Harvard University’s Karen Brennan said recently that learning how to code — learning how to program a computer — essentially how to create, should be for all kids and not just for some kids. Brennan, who is the assistant professor of education at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, spoke earlier this month to a gathering of nearly 50 at the Harvard Allston Education Portal as part of its Faculty Speaker Series. Coding “is learning in a very different way,” Brennan said. “Kids are used to being told how to think, how to memorize. This allows them to be in control. It takes some time, but once kids have a little taste of being creative, many of them don’t want to look back.” Administrators at Notre Dame must have agreed with Dr. Brennan because once again the entire school — from Jr.-K through 12th grade — was part of the worldwide “Hour of Code,” which this year was held during the week of December 8-14. Last year’s Hour of Code event at Notre Dame was December 9, 2013.
“From the actors to the stage hands to the musicians, all seemed to be at the top of their game,” said one fan after a performance. “We look forward to the next play from the NDP Players!”
NOTRE DAME’S CARLSON NAMED MISS VOLLEYBALL | November 17, 2014 Determining what Notre Dame Prep’s Katherine Carlson is best at, you might pick volleyball. That makes perfect sense since the 5-foot11 senior excels at the game, evidenced by leading her Fighting Irish teammates to the state quarterfinals this Tuesday as well as to a Class B championship last season. Or you might say her faith and work in the community is where she does her best work since she’s a regular at St. Vincent DePaul clothing drives, various food pantries, parish picnics and nursing home visits. Or is it academics? She currently holds a 4.37 grade-pointaverage at the academically tough Notre Dame and earned a fouryear scholarship to Valparaiso University, itself academically strong. She’s also a fine artist with keenly developed talent in both drawing and painting. But, truth be told, it is all of the above that catapulted Carlson to the top of Michigan’s volleyball class as the 2014 Miss Volleyball.
NOTRE DAME’S LOWER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS EARN WORLD RANKINGS | December 15, 2014 Students in Notre Dame’s lower and middle schools participated in a VEX IQ robotics tournament in Rochester Hills over the weekend and took home six of seven possible awards. According to Jerry Palardy, one of the “Bumble Bees” team mentors, there were a total of 16 teams participating in the competition and the Bees fared very well. In fact, he said, many of their scores ranked them very high in the world.
NOTRE DAME’S ‘GREAT GIVE’ RAISES MORE THAN $8,000 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES | December 1, 2014 Last year, more than 800 new Christmas gifts for infants, children, teenagers and parents were collected as part of the Great Give. In the recently completed Thanksgiving edition, or part one, of The Great Give 2014, the Notre Dame community of students, parents, faculty and staff collected food baskets and more than $8,000, all of which will benefit Marist missions and a number of local charities, including the WHRC (Whitmer Human Resource Center) and the Baldwin Center. According to Cathy Zuccaro from NDPMA’s Campus Ministry department, the school’s Optimist Club will use a portion of the money to buy Christmas presents for five WHRC Pontiac families. “And the food drive collected enough for 32 WHRC families to have a complete Thanksgiving meal,” she added.
FAITH AND NOTRE DAME HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL TO ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON IN CHICAGO | January 9, 2015 John Pomponi, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1999, checked in recently with his high-school alma mater. He currently is an attending orthopedic surgeon in Chicago with the Franciscan Alliance hospital system. He says he misses NDP, especially the teachers, and he mentioned math teacher Anthony Borton and government teacher Gregory Simon (“a lot of heated political debates in his class!”). Pomponi recently was married to “a great girl named Sarah,” who coincidentally is an alumnus of Notre Dame High School in Peoria, Ill. “Sarah and I feel that our strong Catholic education and upbringing fostered an amazing beginning to our lives,” he said.
NDP PLAYERS FINISH SUCCESSFUL RUN OF ‘BYE BYE BIRDIE’ | November 23, 2014 The Notre Dame Prep Players finished up their adaptation of the popular stage play “Bye Bye Birdie” with a Sunday afternoon performance at the Avondale Performing Arts Center. Members of the audience during each of the four performances were unanimous in praising the Notre Dame students and the work they put into the shows. 13
“Also, I truly felt privileged that my parents were able to send me to such an exceptional prep school like NDP, which fostered my Catholic faith. Being able to attend Mass and receive religious education along with the rigorous math and science programs helped to keep me grounded and focused on the bigger picture in life.” ALUM IS HELPING TO EDUCATE IN GUATEMALA | January 6, 2015 Ask 2003 Notre Dame Prep graduate Annalisa Simmer what drove her to her career and she immediately scoffs at the notion that she actually “has” a career. “It’s more of a ‘life work’ than a career,” she says. “No one ever went into humanitarian aid or mission work to make money or become successful as those in the U.S. might define success.” Life work or career, what Simmer is doing is simply both unselfish and commendable. After what she calls a “privileged” upbringing and a degree from Albion College, Simmer began a journey that took her not to grad school, but to Guatemala. She says she’s been a full-time missionary in Guatemala since October of 2010, at which time she thought she was going to teach massage therapy to the Guatemalans. But there was a real need for someone to teach English, so she jumped in with both feet. NOTRE DAME STUDENTS WORK IN THE COMMUNITY ON MLK JR. ‘DAY OF SERVICE’ | January 19, 2015 On January 19, Notre Dame once again joined the nation in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which honors the life and legacy of one of the great figures in modern American history. Rev. Dr. King believed that acts of service were the great equalizer. “Everybody can be great,” he said, “because everybody can serve.” Service to the community always has been an important component to the education of Notre Dame students. Simply measure the many community and Christian hours of service spent annually by NDP seniors alone, and you come up with well more than 10,000! This past weekend, a number of Notre Dame students again were serving the community along with more than 400 others in the 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which was sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Black Catholic Ministries and Youth Ministry offices.

Continued STUDENTS FROM NOTRE DAME IN D.C. FOR MARCH FOR LIFE | January 22, 2015 More than 40 students from Notre Dame’s upper division were in Washington, D.C., today to participate in the 42nd annual March for Life, which was held at the National Mall in the nation’s capitol. They joined hundreds of other young people in “Champions for Life” clubs from many other Detroit-area Catholic high schools. The NDP group, which currently numbers 43 students, will be in Washington from January 21 through January 23. A March for Life rally was from noon to 1 p.m. today with a host of speakers as well as for a warm-up event and concert. The actual march began immediately after the rally and followed a route up Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court building on Capitol Hill. Ten parents from NDP accompanied the students as chaperones. NOTRE DAME SENIOR PICKED FROM 93,000 FOR SCHOLARSHIP | January 30, 2015 Notre Dame Prep senior Jessica Caruso was surprised today when her parents and classmates gathered in classroom A10 for an announcement by community-service organization DoSomething. org that she had earned one of its four annual $10,000 college scholarships. DoSomething.org is one of the largest nonprofits for young people and social change, with 3.3 million members “who tackle campaigns that impact every cause, from poverty to violence to the environment to literally everything else,” according to DoSomething. org. In Caruso’s case, she participated in a mobile app called “Science Sleuth,” which involved a game and scavenger hunt that promoted STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math) for girls. A key part of the game was that once tasks were completed, donations were made to a designated charity. NOTRE DAME ART STUDENTS HONORED AT THE DIA | February 11, 2015 It was a big night for Notre Dame student-artists as they took home prestigious Scholastic Art honors at an award ceremony held Wednesday evening at the Detroit Film Theater, which is located in the Detroit Institute of Arts in the city’s Cultural Center. According to Sandy LewAllen, chair of Notre Dame’s visual arts department, the awards were well-deserved. She said that two of her art students, Calvin Burns and Reagan Kazyak, were even featured in the event program.
The Notre Damers earned 17 Scholastic awards in all this year, the most ever in one year for the school. NOTRE DAME FIGURES PROMINENTLY IN NEW BOOK BY ALUM | February 9, 2015 On November 11, U.S. Congressman and Notre Dame alum David Bonior (‘63) will release his latest book, “Eastside Kid: A Memoir of My Youth, From Detroit to Congress,” a heartfelt recollection of his coming of age in working class southeast Michigan and his ascent to become the second highest ranked member of the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held for 11 years. It’s the fourth book authored by the retired Democratic Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives. In a recent phone interview, Bonior told a member of NDPMA’s advancement office that along with passages about his early childhood in Hamtramck, there is a lot in the book—including many photos—about his parochial school experiences at St. Veronica in what was then East Detroit (now Eastpointe) as well as about the time he spent at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods. “I’ve written this book as a kind of family reminiscence,” he said. “It’s written as if I’m telling my kids and grandkids about what I’ve seen and experienced in life.” IVY LEAGUER WANTS TO HELP BRING DETROIT BACK | February 20, 2015 Even though he’s not yet a full year removed from high school, current Princeton undergrad Max Schwegman says he’s already pretty sure of what he’d like to do with his career. Schwegman’s an economics major and plans to get an MBA. And he believes that once all of that is behind him, he’ll leave the Ivy League and head back to Detroit. “I believe Detroit has more to offer than it is generally credited with, and I want to be a part of its comeback,” Schwegman said in a recent interview with the Notre Dame alumni office. “I want to help spark new industry, create jobs, and form a better living environment in the city. It is my home and where my heart lies, and ultimately I want to be able to give back to this community.” He thinks his passion for what he believes in, a motivation to always work to the best of his ability, and a strength of conviction will be key to any success he has back in Detroit and beyond.

NDP ALUM ‘KICKS’ IN FOR KIDS | February 25, 2015 You wouldn’t think that something so basic as shoes would inspire a philanthropic movement. Yet, when 1999 Notre Dame Prep grad CheKeita Jones, who at the time was a teacher in the Pontiac school district, noticed that many of her elementary-school students wore ill-fitting, worn out shoes, boots and hand-me-downs, she thought there must be something she could do about it. She knew a lot of “sneaker heads” and people with the wherewithal to help get these kids out of unfit footwear and into new shoes. So she launched a program called the “Kicks 4 Kids Foundation,” with a goal of raising enough money to get these students sneakers they were proud to wear. “That is how Kicks 4 Kids was born,” she said. As Jones and the Kicks 4 Kids mission statement states, “The mission of Kicks 4 Kids is to alleviate one of the most burdensome social pressures for inner-city youth, which often leads to bullying. With support from our community stakeholders, we will be able to boost self confidence while providing one of the most basic needs.” THE NDP SYMPHONY BAND PERFORMS ‘AMAZING GRACE,’ TAKES TOP SCORE AT BAND FEST | March 15, 2015 In a performance recorded Saturday, March 14, at the MSBOA District-4 Band & Orchestra Festival, the Notre Dame Symphony Band, under the direction of Joe Martin, performed a truly amazing rendition of “Amazing Grace.” This performance at the competition, which was held at Walled Lake Northern High School, helped catapult the band to straight 1stdivision ratings, the highest score available from MSBOA. Last year at the same festival, the Notre Dame Symphony Band also took straight 1st-division honors. NOTRE DAME SENIOR WINS NATIONAL ART AWARD, THE FIRST FROM THE SCHOOL | March 16, 2015 Notre Dame Prep senior Reagan Kazyak learned today that she has earned the national Gold Key Award in the 2015 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. It’s the first time a Notre Dame Prep student has won this award. Kazyak will pick up her Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
National Medal among other medalists from around the U.S. in a ceremony held in early June at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Kazyak’s winning piece, which is called “A Vintage Dream,” is a dress constructed entirely out of pages taken from an actual storybook. IRISH WEEK 2015 KICKS OFF AT NOTRE DAME | March 17, 2015 The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame Preparatory and Marist Academy in Pontiac are once again jumping into “Irish Week,” which began in the school Monday as a week-long celebration of the school’s Irish heritage/nickname. The tradition began years ago at Harper Woods Notre Dame, a school managed by the Boston-based Marist Fathers and Brothers who currently sponsor NDPMA in Pontiac. Irish Week includes special activities, liturgies, hall decorations and concludes with Thursday-Friday athletic-and-skills competitions between classes called the Irish Games, which pit class against class in a series of games ranging from Balloon Stomp to Plunger Relay. CREATIVE NOTRE DAME ALUM CREDITS HIS HIGH SCHOOL FOR CAREER SUCCESS | March 25, 2015 It’s a familiar refrain we hear from Notre Dame graduates. “I would not be where I am today without my Notre Dame education.” “Notre Dame taught me the value of hard work.” “The high academics at Notre Dame made college so much easier for me.” And on and on we hear virtually the same thing from nearly every grad. Add 2000 Notre Dame Prep alum and film/video producer Bill Holland to that list. “As much as the workload at Notre Dame often seemed overwhelming, it totally prepared me for tackling the seemingly impossible tasks I was faced with in college,” said Holland. “I found that as a college student, Prep had prepared me well for the reading workload and extensive projects that every class would demand. There were times, as a high school student, that the amount of reading almost seemed impossible to tackle, but when I got to college the reason became clear.” Holland is owner and president of Middlebranch Productions, Inc., a Chicago-based video production, direction, post-production and motion graphics company he formed in 2002. Since then, the company has grown and expanded to handle a range of projects from commercials to event and music videos. He has recently worked on projects for Wheat Thins, Subway, Wrigley, Sears, Hilton Hotels, and Nascar while working at several different Chicago-based agencies.

While decidedly different in both appearance and function when compared to the previous site, it retains all of the relevant information contained on the old site and streamlines access to that information, according to school officials. And like most new websites generated today, Notre Dame’s site is based on a “responsive” platform, which means it is more compatible with all digital devices, from computers to tablets to smartphones. Responsive websites are designed to make text and images easier to read on any device; plus page navigation is intuitive and simplified. The new site, which is based on the WordPress content management system (CMS), retains the original URL, www.ndpma. org, and is the product of a large amount of input from those in the Notre Dame community who have regular content-management and user responsibilities. In addition, the new CMS is many times more user-friendly than the previous website’s CMS for those who regularly add or update content. Over the past several years, the former Notre Dame website has averaged more than 25,000 visitors each month and more than one million total page views per year. Notre Dame’s administration anticipates continued growth with the new site, especially now

TWO NOTRE DAME JUNIORS HELP OUT WITH FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR WAR-TORN UKRAINE | May 3, 2015 Notre Dame Prep juniors Zenon Lewyckyj and Stefan Jurkiw put in a great deal of time and effort in a Detroit suburb recently to help with raising money and awareness for the efforts of the “Save Ukraine Now” campaign. Save Ukraine Now was organized by the Ukrainian American Civic Committee of Metropolitan Detroit to help Ukrainians currently embroiled in a conflict with Russianbacked separatists that has created 1.9 million refugees within and outside the country, as well as many casualties. The April 28 and 29 event was held at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren, Michigan, where well over 200 individuals of various ethnicities and faiths gathered to learn about the current situation in Ukraine and how they can help the refugees and displaced persons.

According to IB-DP coordinator Kim Anderson, it was a special way to recognize the hard work, dedication and talent of the seniors who are heading into the IB examination period next month and also the NDP juniors in the program who will follow in their footsteps. All of the seniors on hand at the event were available after the ceremony to discuss the extended essays they had spent so much time on during the year. Three seniors, Angela Fan, Robert Joseph and Oana Danciu, were called to the podium to present summaries of their extended essay topics to family, faculty members and friends in attendance. NOTRE DAME ATHLETIC TRAINER RECEIVES HONOR FROM NATIONAL PUBLICATION | May 19, 2015 High school athletic trainers are the unsung heroes of interscholastic sports and many work countless hours to help young people become the best they can be. Add dedicated, professional, multitasking and responsive to the word “hero,” and you’ve pretty much summed up Chris Polsinelli, Notre Dame’s athletic trainer. For nearly 15 years, Polsinelli has toiled on the sidelines, in the weight rooms and in the classrooms of Notre Dame to make sure its student-athletes stay safe, get appropriate care when injured and have access to some of the most state-of-the art conditioning

NOTRE DAME’S CLASS OF 2015 SHATTERS SCHOLARSHIP RECORD | May 29, 2015 When the 180 seniors from Notre Dame walked across the stage on Sunday, May 17, to receive their diplomas, few if any in the audience knew what an astounding statistic about their class was percolating down the hallway. According to figures released today by Notre Dame Prep’s counseling department, this year’s class of graduating seniors earned an amazing total of $20,381,540 to date in academic scholarships from colleges and universities. That record total amount of dollars works out to a more than $113,000 average for each member of the class, which shatters by far the $88,000 mark set the last two years, which itself was a record for any year in the history of the school. In addition, the Class of 2015 averaged 27.2 on the ACT, breaking the record of 27.0, which was the average of the last three graduating classes. Also, the counseling department said this year’s graduates included 52 who scored a 30 or above on the ACT. NEW FIELD TURF INCLUDED IN CAPITAL PROJECTS APPROVED BY NOTRE DAME BOARD | May 26, 2015 At the April 2015 meeting of NDPMA’s Board of Trustees, a number of capital projects totaling more than $750,000 were approved to move forward throughout this summer. One of the biggest projects approved was the installation of new synthetic turf on the William Kozyra Alumni Field. According to school officials, 50% of the cost of the new field has been donated by current trustee William Kozyra, with the rest of the cost coming out of an appropriation from the school’s maintenance fund. The new turf will feature greater concussion prevention versus the current field surface, an alternating-shade-of-green design and colorful renditions of the school’s athletic logos.
NOTRE DAME GRADUATE GETS SPECIAL HONORS AS SERVICE ACADEMY APPOINTEE | May 31, 2015 At a ceremony held last week hosted by U.S Representative Sander Levin (D-9th district) honoring recent high school graduates who were accepted to a United States service academy, Notre Dame’s Domenic Tatum (’15) was given official notification of his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Levin nominated Tatum for the appointment as part of an extensive application process that began months ago. NOTRE DAME ALUM EARNS RECOGNITION FROM FINANCIAL PUBLICATION | May 31, 2015 Frank Migliazzo, a 1969 graduate of Notre Dame High School who leads a Merril Lynch private banking and investment group in Troy, Mich., was recognized recently on the 2015 Financial Times “Top 400 Financial Advisors” list. The “Financial Times Top 400 Financial Advisors” is an independent listing of U.S. advisors produced by the U.K.-based Financial Times. The FT 400 is based on data gathered from firms and verified by broker-dealer home offices, regulatory disclosures, and the FT’s research. The listing reflects each advisor’s performance in six primary areas, including assets under management, asset growth, compliance record, experience, credentials and accessibility. NOTRE DAME ANNOUNCES 28 VALEDICTORIANS, ALL WITH 4.35 GPA OR HIGHER | June 8, 2015 Notre Dame Preparatory School has announced the 28 young men and women who have earned a place in its 2015 valedictorian class. The Class of 2015 graduated 180 students in total. At Notre Dame, traditional courses are weighted on a 4.000 basis, honors courses on a 4.500 basis, and Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses on a 5.0 basis. A student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 4.350 to be considered a valedictorian. FORENSIC SCIENTIST HAS A PASSION FOR JUSTICE | June 16, 2015 The Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division includes a network of seven regional laboratories strategically located across the state that serve the communities of Michigan. Technicians and scientists within the department work on everything from determining the identity of unknown substances suspected of being “controlled,” to crime-scene analysis, which could include homicides,

suspicious deaths, excavations/exhumations, officer-involved shootings and violent or serial assaults. A relatively recent involvement by the MSP forensics units into the Detroit Police Department’s backlog of 11,000 untested sexual assault kits—some dating back more than 30 years—is leading to the resolution of a number of rape cases. One member of MSP’s forensic science division, NDP grad Amanda (Buszek) Fazi (‘06), is making her own mark in the state as a forensic scientist who is charged with, she said, “receiving and processing evidence for the presence of biological fluids and developing DNA profiles from evidence to compare to reference samples.” Fazi has been employed by the MSP in its biology unit since graduating from college. FROM NORTHERN MICHIGAN TO SOUTH AMERICA AND BACK AGAIN | June 26, 2015 Carly Joseph ’13 (NDP) has always been an athlete. She loves to run and her time at Notre Dame included significant contributions to Irish softball and cross-country teams. But it seems her physical endeavors are picking up the pace even more just as her academics demand more and more of her time and attention. Joseph is currently pursuing degrees in biomedical engineering and Spanish from Michigan Technological University, located in the state’s Upper Peninsula. However, her studies now have her in Valparaiso, Chile, where she’s taking Spanish at the Pontifical Catholic University. When her day is done in the classroom, Joseph heads to the nearest mountain. “Rock climbing is one of my newer hobbies, and it nicely complements my other mountain passions, which include snowboarding,” she said. “Some of my favorite times while living here in Valparaiso have been climbing and chatting with locals on and around the mountains. I’ve been doing both outdoor and indoor climbing here. I’ve met some incredibly talented climbers and made lots of new friends there.”
