NDSCS Alumni Review

Letter from the

Executive Director

W

e are a strong, dedicated College planning for the betterment of our students and the workforce of the region. At NDSCS, we embrace a ‘new normal’ as our programs adapt to meet the challenges of our ever-changing world. In my 15 years with the NDSCS Foundation, I have witnessed many exciting developments and collaborations. Most recently, NDSCS is adding a Land Lab for our Agriculture students to roll up their sleeves and gain valuable experience in the field. The vision to create such a training area began over 10 years ago. A tract of land was needed for outdoor lab areas to demonstrate agricultural practices and collaborate with public and private industry partners. In recent months, a local alumna and her family were intrigued by the opportunity and expressed interest. They worked with the NDSCS Foundation and in May 2017, entered into an agreement to develop the new NDSCS Land Lab. Details are being put in place to start the Land Lab in the spring of 2018. We appreciate the family’s support which has allowed a dream to become reality – leaving a legacy for years to come.

It is the mission of our Alumni Foundation team to match the wishes of Kim Nelson donors to the needs of the College. Our goals for the upcoming year are to build our current scholarship endowments, develop sustainability of the Foundation, educate on opportunities of planned giving and continue to direct young people to the value of attending NDSCS. Many things change after graduating from college, but friendships, connections and learning continue. NDSCS President Richman and the Foundation continue to recognize the importance of our faculty, staff and retirees and their role in shaping bright futures of our students. If you would like to be part of the Tradition of Success, we would be happy to direct you or answer any questions. Giving, even a little, can change a lot! I look forward to visiting with many of our alumni and friends at the 2017 Homecoming and the many other events we host throughout the year. Please contact me at 701-671-2187 or kim.j.nelson@ndscs.edu anytime to share your journey.

reetings from NDSCS! This past year has been filled with many memorable highlights that exemplify the “Science of Success”. Through your continued support and loyalty, NDSCS has been able to enhance academic programs and write a new strategic plan to ensure NDSCS’s continued tradition of excellence.

We were able to invest in developing future student leaders, by expanding our ‘Science of Leadership’ program. The Science of Leadership, which started in 2013, has progressed into a selective, scholarship opportunity that enables officers from Dr. John Richman (‘73) any official NDSCS Over the past year students, student organization employees, and other stakeholders have to apply. Previously, criteria limited been providing us feedback and input participation to only Student Senate that helped us develop and adopt the members – but was recently expanded new Strategic Plan. This plan focuses to attract a more diverse pool of student on purposefully fulfilling our mission leaders. Through a generous gift in 2016 through 2020. The multi-phased from the Edson and Margaret Larson planning process resulted in four new Foundation, along with a ND State strategic goals for the entire College Challenge Grant, this year 15 students community. They include: 1) Improving were awarded a $3,000 scholarship for the student learning experience, participation; these students represented 2) Strategically meeting business and 10 different student organizations and industry needs in North Dakota and the 11 academic programs. Science of region, 3) Commitment to the continuous development of NDSCS employees, and 4) Strengthening relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Each specific goal includes a number of strategies and key performance indicators to measure success and progress toward the goal, and are also aligned with the North Dakota University System’s strategic plan.

Leadership participants were provided opportunities through experiential learning and mentoring to gain the skills necessary to become life-long leaders. ave you ever met someone that seems to ‘have it all together’ and you are curious what led them to be successful? Arvin and Jeanette Rohrer, Devils Lake, N.D., were very impressed with how NDSCS had equipped their neighbor, Dustin, to be just that. He graduated from NDSCS with his Construction Management degree in 2012, secured a job with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and bought his first home by the age of 24. Arvin and Jeanette traveled to Wahpeton, N.D., to tour the college last summer and were even more impressed. They saw NDSCS as a place that can motivate

young people to become successful professionals. Dustin’s brother, Brady, was with them and will attend NDSCS starting in the Fall of 2017. Arvin and Jeanette are true “Friends of the College.” Arvin, 90, and Jeanette, 88, have been married 60 years. They have four boys and eight grandchildren. Farming provided a good life and a great way to raise a family. Arvin is semi-retired and helps a local farmer. They both are still very involved in their community. They started the Arvin and Jeanette Rohrer Endowed Scholarship to create a

Carol Martin

Making a “World” of a Difference

C

arol Martin started her Dental Hygiene education at NDSCS at age 26. Originally, from Lancaster, Pa., family brought Carol to the Williston, N.D. area. In 1986, she enrolled in the NDSCS Dental Hygiene program. Her instructors, Jean Freden, Ann Niccoli and Dr. Susan Schreiner, played an important role in shaping her future. She took a community health class during her time at NDSCS, which provided free dental care to the students at Circle of Nations in Wahpeton, N.D. Carol always had a desire to help others and this experience really motivated her. After graduating from NDSCS, she returned to Lancaster and began volunteering at the Water Street Rescue Mission, where she assisted in starting a free dental clinic to those with no dental insurance. To get the clinic up and running, Carol solicited dental suppliers and received enough

supplies to open the clinic to its first clients. Over the years, she was a member the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists Association board holding several positions including President, Trustee, Delegate, and Parliamentarian. In search of an epic event to celebrate her 50th birthday, Carol participated in a dental mission trip to Honduras. For the next six years, she recruited fellow hygienists and dentists to join the effort supported by Center American Relief Effort in remote communities of Choluteca, Honduras. Taking a year off, she felt the need to continue her volunteering. In 2017, with an open heart to help, she expanded her efforts into Lima, Peru working in the slum communities and also traveled north to Aguaytia, Peru working with the Kakataibo tribe.

Through the encouragement of Rose Schumacher, a NDSCS grad, Carol entered Carol Martin (‘88) the degree completion program at Minnesota State University, Mankato graduating in 2014. She also received the Sunstar/ RDH Award of Distinction in 2013 and the Community Dental Health Award from the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists Association in 2004 and 2011. Carol credits her time at NDSCS as a great decision in a positive direction! If you know someone who could benefit from exploring the 80+ career paths at NDSCS, encourage them to contact Enrollment Services at 800-342-4325, ext. 2521, or to learn more online at NDSCS.edu.

he NDSCS Alumni Foundation would like to thank John and Patricia Zimbrick for their outstanding contributions to the NDSCS Foundation. John, a 1948 business graduate of NDSSS, is the owner of an automobile dealership and other associated companies in Madison, Wis. He attended the University of Minnesota after graduating from NDSSS. He received his first sales job selling freezers and food supplies before moving to the Chicago area where he pursued a career in the automobile business. John joined the Lou Ehler Ford in Gary, Ind., where he held multiple positions before moving to the Ehler firm in Milwaukee. There, he advanced to new cars sales manager in 1959 and shortly after was promoted to general manager of the firm. He then bought the business in 1965. John and Pat have always been strong supporters of NDSCS through gifts to the NDSCS Foundation, Athletics and John’s service as national co-chair to build the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center at NDSCS. Most recently, their philanthropic efforts have created a legacy with the John and Patricia Zimbrick Endowment Scholarship. The upcoming year’s

came to NDSCS in the fall of 1997 and enrolled in agriculture. Brad Tews was one of my instructors as well as my advisor. I learned many things in my first year, including that I struggled with alcohol. When I realized that this was something I wouldn’t be able to fix on my own, my first call was to Mr. Tews. I didn’t waste time telling him why I was calling and he didn’t waste time getting me in touch with the people and resources I would need to successfully quit. He also told me how proud he was of me. When I recall my years at NDSCS, I am grateful for how Mr. Tews, as well as all the staff, used their skills, experience and resources to prepare me, both personally and professionally. - Jason Miller ‘99

“Little Engine”

Could Come to NDSCS

W

e all remember the story of the “The Little Engine That Could” by Watty Piper, and NDSCS could soon have a little engine on its Wahpeton campus. With the collaboration of three influential supporters, some of the preliminary planning is coming together. Jody Schuler of Minn-Kota has a train engine; Cal Grubele of Red River Western Railroad said he could provide tracks and Roger Haberman from Industrial Builders said he would have the resources to move it. Therefore, as the story unfolds, NDSCS could have its own engine operating on a track within the campus grounds. This collaboration goes beyond its dedicated supporters. It provides an opportunity for the NDSCS Diesel Technology, Auto Body Repair and Refinishing Technology, Electrical Technology, Precision Machining Technology, Welding Technology,

Land Surveying and Civil Engineering Technology, Facilities Management and other departments to be involved in refurbishing the little engine, paint it the right color and get it up and moving. Stay tuned for more information about how the “little engine” makes it way to NDSCS. If you are interested in helping financially or through in-kind donations, please contact Kim Nelson at 701-671-2187.

hanks to the businesses and corporations featured here in the Alumni Review that financially sponsor the NDSCS Foundation. Foundation sponsors have committed to helping achieve the mission of supporting and assisting those activities that develop and strengthen the North Dakota State College of Science. But what does that really mean? The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the College. Without the support of sponsors, annual gifts, club

gifts and other general gifts, fulfilling the Foundation’s mission would be challenging. Over the past two years, the NDSCS Foundation has raised over $3 million, contributing to departments, student scholarships, equipment and greatest needs of the College. This is a win for all. Thank you to everyone that helps the NDSCS Foundation and NDSCS shine.

Alumnus of the Year

Gary Marquardt

C

ongratulations to the 2017 Alumnus of the Year, Gary Marquardt. As an NDSSS alumnus, he has demonstrated Wildcat pride and support for the college in many ways. He is a superb example of a successful graduate who has made great contributions to NDSCS, his profession and his community. Gary is a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., and graduated from O’Gorman High School in 1967. He resided in Sioux Falls with his parents, one older brother and four sisters. Gary experienced many challenges during his youth. He loved football but did not physically mature until later in high school. He later became a starter and excelled on the O’Gorman High School football team. For the young athlete, football was life. In the spring of 1967, Gary’s high school coach/counselor sent film of him playing to NDSSS coach Ed Werre. To this day, Gary is thankful that Ed Werre and Cliff Hermes had faith and confidence in him to succeed in college. Gary became a standout defensive end and captain of the Wildcat football team. He graduated with an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology degree in 1969. It was at NDSSS where he met his wife, Joan Wicklein, a Wahpeton resident and a 1968 NDSSS Liberal Arts graduate. Gary is extremely complimentary of his schooling at NDSSS. He attributes much of his success to numerous faculty, staff and fellow students who supported and believed in him. “The State College of Science believed in me and would not let me fail,” said Gary. After graduation, he held various industry drafting and design, sales, and management positions before forming his own company, Engineering Repro

Systems, with a capital investment of one thousand dollars. The company offered traditional drafting and engineering supplies, computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting furniture, as well as state-of-the-art CAD plotting services via a laser network linking over 30 cities 24 hours a day. By 1990, annual sales exceeded over eight million dollars. Gary served as president of the company for over 19 years. In October of 1999, he sold the company, where he served as one of six senior vice presidents and managed the region five area. The corporation had over 680 million dollars in sales in 2008. He retired in 2012. Gary is an active supporter both financially and in service to North Dakota State College of Science. He served on the NDSCS Foundation Board of Directors from 1996 to 2008 and held positions of vice president and president. He was the honorary commencement speaker at NDSCS in 1991. Gary has been a financial supporter of the NDSCS 300 Club, Catbackers Club, participant of the DREAMS Auction event and is a member of the Blikre Society. He and his wife, Joan, received the honor of Parade Grand Marshals in 1992 and Wildcats of the Year in 2000. Gary is an NDSCS Letterwinner, Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and one of the founders of the NDSCS Alumni Weekend football event. Gary is multi-talented and gives generously to his community. He is a published watercolor artist featured in the Minnesota Watercolor Society “Brush Strokes” publication and honored in the Minnesota Watercolor Society Fall Show of 2015. He has spent time teaching young students this medium in his studio and in schools. He was member of the Minneapolis Rotary Club for 15 years where he served as president in 2011. He has continued to support athletics by

Gary Marquardt (‘69)

coaching and officiating youth and high school sports. Gary has also done some public speaking on local and national levels throughout his career. Gary and his wife currently reside in Wayzata, Minn., and enjoy retirement. Their daughter, Jennifer Oko, NDSCS Nursing graduate, has a bachelor’s degree with honors in Health Leadership from Lewis University, Ill. She and her husband, Tim Oko, have four children and reside in Downers Grove, Ill. Their son, John Marquardt, has his own technology consulting company. He and wife, Kristi, have three children and live in Shorewood, Minn.

Gary shares another talent, playing taps at Oak Hill Cemetery for veterans.

A Family Tradition

The Baker Family

T

he NDSCS Foundation is pleased to announce the Wayne and Janet Baker family as recipients of the 2017 Family Tradition award. Their tradition of success is very evident. Wayne and Janet (Brand) Baker were raised in Richland County and all six of their children are graduates of NDSSS, as well as four of their spouses. Wayne passed away in December of 2004 after working in the roofing and sheet metal business his entire life. Janet was a stay-at-home mom nurturing six children and volunteering in the community. She became involved with NDSSS by helping with fall registration before any of her children even graduated high school. During that time, she made a pact to ensure all her children would attend the College after high school, continuing their education for two more years right next door to home. Brad, the Bakers’ oldest and only son, graduated from NDSSS in 1980 with an associate degree in Architectural Drafting and Estimating. While attending college, he met Kim Lenton, a 1980 Computer Operator graduate. She was accepted into the new Medical Record program that same year and graduated in 1982 with an associate degree in Medical Records. They married in 1982 and eventually founded Professional Roofing in Ketchum, Ind. Brad has served on the Board of Directors for the Western States Roofing Association for several years and this past year served as president. Kim works in the office as their administrative coordinator. They have three daughters, Ashley (Chance Pehrson), Elissa and Kaylee, and two granddaughters, Oakley and Tinley. Beth Lohman graduated from NDSSS in 1981 from the Architectural Drafting and Estimating program. She met her husband, Clint Lohman, at NDSSS and they married in 1982. Wildcat of the Year

Maria Kaduc

Kevin Bauer

M

aria Kaduc, born and raised in Czechoslovakia, received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1976 from Pedagogicka Faculta University J.A. Komensky, Trnava, Slovakia. She taught at the elementary school for eight years before deciding to make a life-altering change for her family. Several contributing factors aided in Maria’s decision to emigrate from Czechoslovakia in July of 1984. The journey that eventually ended in the United States first took Maria and her family to Yugoslavia and Austria before finally setting in Wahpeton, N.D., in July 1985. Wanting to excel in her understanding of English, Maria signed up for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Wahpeton High School in August 1985. A year later, she continued her education at North Dakota State College of Science, which led her to receive a certificate from the Computer Operator Program in 1987 and an associate degree in Computer Science in 1989. In August 1990, St. John’s Elementary School hired Maria to teach computers and mathematics. During this time, she also tutored computer classes at the NDSCS Learning Skills Center and taught mathematics to migrant students in Breckenridge, Minn. In 1994, Maria was hired by NDSCS to teach and coordinate the flextime courses in the Academic Services Center (ASC). While teaching, she continued taking courses to improve her language and get her undergraduate and master’s degrees. In 2000, she completed coursework and received her master’s degree in Educational Leadership from North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. In 2005, Maria became the Director of the ASC at NDSCS. Because of her own experience, Maria has a great understanding of what

Maria Kaduc

students, especially underprepared students, experience when transitioning to college. Maria enjoys working with students who have academic and study deficiencies. She takes time to get to know her students and then builds on this knowledge. One activity she enjoys most is working with student athletes. It is a pleasure for the Athletic Department and the NDSCS Foundation to honor Maria because of her dedication to students and leadership. A few of Maria’s awards have been 1999 Excellence in Teaching, 2002 Extra Mile Award, 2009 NDACTSNE Directors Award of Excellence and 2016 NDACTE Administrator of the Year. Maria is a proud mother of two sons. Martin, her oldest son, resides in Seattle with his wife, Christine. Maria’s youngest son, Peter, lives in Sparta, Wis., with his wife, Debra, and their three children. Both of Maria’s sons started their post-secondary education at NDSCS. Maria’s family also includes hundreds of NDSCS “sons and daughters” who consider her their NDSCS mom. Many of those students are now successful professionals living all over the world and contributing to society. By believing in her students, Maria has always empowered them to do the best they can do academically, personally and professionally. “Watching my NDSCS children graduate, and in many cases continue their education, is the greatest reward,” commented Maria.

K

Kevin Bauer

evin Bauer began working at NDSCS in 1983 as a student employee. He was part of the technical lighting and sound crew for the Wildcat Singers and Stage Band under the direction of Tilford Kroshus and Laurie Lekang. In 1987, Kevin officially became a part-time lighting and sound technician for the NDSCS Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center, while working full-time for Rigel’s Appliances in Moorhead, Minn. He has been willing to share his technical expertise with NDSCS for the last 30 years. Kevin has been instrumental in the maintenance of NDSCS’s light and sound system, including leading a major upgrade to the technology in 2015. Throughout his tenure here, he has trained many staff and students who have assisted him. His amazing commitment includes trips from Moorhead to Wahpeton, N.D., when problems arise. He also works from his Moorhead home consulting with artistic performers about their specific technical needs before they arrive on campus. Many artists give a special thanks to Kevin for his help making their program a wonderful experience. He is an exceptional representative of the College with his outstanding customer service and professionalism. Kevin met his wife, Holly Keller, a 1986 Dental Hygiene student, at NDSCS. They were married in 1990 and currently reside in Moorhead. They have one daughter, Joelle. NDSCSAlumni.com
