Mallory Poff with her solar-powered refrigerated trailer project that won the 2021 Lumen Prize at Elon University in North Carolina.

Local Student Named 2021 Lumen Scholar at Elon University

Mallory Poff, a 2019 graduate of Barron Collier High School in Naples, recently was awarded the prestigious 2021 Lumen Prize at Elon University in North Carolina. Fifteen Elon sophomores are selected Lumen scholars each year following a lengthy application and interview process, and receive a $20,000 scholarship.

Poff, an engineering major, will spend the next two years pursuing her project: “What Is an Efficient Solar Panel Design to Power a Mobile Cooling Unit and Meet Agricultural Standards for Small Farms?” Her goal is to make a self-sustaining trailer to transport crops from small farms to local food pantries and farmers markets using solar energy to refrigerate the crops rather than burning fossil fuels, and provide videos and instructions to enable farmers to make their own trailers.

Poff points to her Collier County Public Schools teachers and her time serving the Naples community as sources of inspiration for her project.

“I am super passionate about renewable energy and have been since elementary school,” Poff said. “I am very thankful for my engineering and math teachers throughout my K 12 education [at Collier County Public Schools]. The Engineering NAF Academy at Barron Collier High School was an eye opening program for me I was the only female at BCHS to complete the Engineering NAF program in 2019, and it was the support of my teachers and peers that helped me grow in my confidence as a woman in STEM that set me up for success at Elon.”

Poff noted that she grew up with a service mindset. “I have always loved to serve my community, whether at East Naples United Methodist Church, Osceola Elementary School, or Meals of Hope, so I knew my research would have a service component attached,” she explained. “By creating a cost-effective, energy-efficient way to store and transport crops, this device will solve a huge need in this community and protect the surrounding environment.”

Poff is the daughter of Michael and Danielle Poff, sister to Victoria, and granddaughter of Tom and Carol McElroy and Anne Poff, all of Naples.
