THIS MONTH: Happy Father’s Day and A Trip Back to the 1970s

The 1970s were probably the greatest years ever to be a kid, back before the invention of the 24-hour news cycle and social media. My childhood summers were spent at the beach, on my bike, playing Kick the Can after dark, and riding in the “way back” of our family’s station wagon, next to the giant green Coleman cooler. Instead of having devices to entertain the four kids in my family during our epic drives that crisscrossed the country, we played 20 Questions and Mad Libs, sang Mandy and Seasons in the Sun, argued, and bugged my parents. To kick off the Summer of 2018, we are paying homage to that era, with advice on page 40 from Sarah Lyons on how to give your kids a laid-back 1970s summer (without the questionable clothing choices). Keeping things simple is Anna Snyder, offering recipes on page 42 that take much of the work out of making meals at your campsite. And if you want to actually source some of that food yourself, Karen T. Bartlett explains on page 20 how to harvest scallops as a family. In honor of Father’s Day, our MOMentum Moms feature has temporarily been renamed MoMENtum Men and appears on page 22. Stacy Nicolau talked to the DiSarro brothers about serving our community as police officers and firefighters and about their families. Conservancy Names Olive the Barred Owl as New Ambassador

he Conservancy of Southwest Florida has added a barred owl to its family of animal ambassadors. Olive, an adult barred owl, was admitted to a Sarasota-area wildlife center in late 2017 before being transferred to the Conservancy for further examination. Unfortunately, Olive had sustained multiple injuries to the left wing that left her unable to fly. “Although unable to live in the wild, Olive is already becoming a star on our animal ambassador team,” said Dr. Heather Skaza Acosta, education director at the Conservancy. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

Series of Unfortunate Events is a book series for middle-school readers that tells the story of three children (Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire) who work their way expertly through, well, a series of unfortunate events! It includes a sinister villain who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, a large variety of complex characters, and an imaginary world that seems quite a bit like our own, except stranger. The author, Daniel Handler (who writes the books under the pen name Lemony Snicket), uses clever language and comes up with unique ideas and situations to place the characters in. The characters are relatable – Violet Baudelaire is a spectacular inventor, Klaus Baudelaire is an expert researcher, and Sunny Baudelaire has remarkably sharp teeth (which I know may seem strange, but I don’t want to spoil anything). This book series has been turned into a movie and a Netflix TV show. My favorite character is Violet because she can work her way really well through just about any situation. She can invent something out of just about anything, and she is very resourceful. I like some of the other characters in the series, too – and there are a lot of characters! In each book,

the author introduces characters who have very interesting but still realistic personalities.

ROSE CROWE is a homeschooled 13-year-old who loves acting, writing stories, reading, and traveling.

This book series also teaches people to always stick together through tough situations, how to work better as a team, and how you can accomplish your goals if you work hard enough. The Baudelaires are very determined, and they know how to take care of themselves well. It can be difficult to make decisions, but A Series of Unfortunate Events teaches people how to make good decisions. It also teaches people that working as a team is important in many situations. If I had to criticize this book series, I would say that some of the books/parts of the books can be a bit boring. At some parts, nothing particularly interesting happens for a little while, but you still need to read every part of the book in order to understand what happens later on. For some parts that I knew didn’t having anything particularly important, I just skimmed until the book got interesting again. This book would most likely appeal to readers aged 10 years and up who love fantasy and mystery stories. I wouldn’t recommend it to younger children or older children/teenagers who like happier stories (even though the book series is incredible, it is called A Series of Unfortunate Events). I give this book series five stars!

Our School Doors are Locked for Safety

heriff Rambosk and I, along with our leadership teams, have met extensively since the tragic Parkland school shooting to review our security plans. This is in addition to the long-standing partnership between Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) and Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) that has kept our schools safe for over 41 years. Much of what we have discussed, including tactics, safety equipment, and strategies, cannot be discussed in public due to the sensitivity of the information. What we can tell you is that proper security is not built around one technique. It is built around providing layers of protection. We have concluded that an additional security enhancement should be put in place to further ensure the safety of our students, staff, and guests at our schools. If you visit a public school in Collier County, you will soon notice our front doors will be locked as another layer of security. This enhancement will be phased in and put in place at all schools before the start of the 2018-2019 school year. Each school will receive a new access control device (see photo below) prior to the office door being locked. In addition to CCPS communicating to parents/guardians, volunteers, and community members as each new system is installed, schools will begin to notify staff, parents, volunteers, and community members prior to their respective school’s implementation. This is an enhancement to the existing visitor screening procedures currently in place. Guests arriving on

campus will need to request access using the access control device with a video monitor next to the front door. When the front office staff acknowledges a visitor is at the door, the guest will be asked for their name and the reason for their visit, which may include their child’s name. All visitors will be asked to display photo identification to the camera. Once approved and granted access inside the school, our guests will again present photo identification and then receive a visitor’s pass using the existing visitor screening system. We will be producing videos to demonstrate and to further explain the new entry procedures. Again, our goal is to have this enhanced security system at all schools by the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. School principals will notify you in advance of implementation. Guests should plan to arrive at our schools earlier to help expedite their visit. Prioritizing student and staff safety is a commitment we all share. Together we are committed to continuing to maintain our school safety and security best practices, but to always review and improve our abilities and our resources to protect our children and our community. We also recognize and appreciate the community’s role in helping keep our kids safe. Please check what your students are bringing to school in their backpacks and monitor student communications and social media accounts (for example: Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook). If you or your child see or hear anything suspicious, you can report it to your principal, administrator, or go to the CCPS’s “Keep Collier Safe” web page and click the “Report It” button. That tip will go directly to law enforcement. You can also take your tip directly to law enforcement by visiting our onsite Youth Relations Bureau deputy or report it over the phone to the Sheriff’s Office at 239252-9300. And in an emergency, dial 9-1-1. School safety remains a top priority. We continue to look at all options to keep our schools as safe as possible. Thank you for putting your child and trust in CCPS. t’s summer, and that means your kids have tons of free time on their hands. Luckily, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office has a way to keep kids safe and occupied until school resumes. Below you’ll find our summer offerings for everything from day camps to open gym hours. And don’t forget our weekly evening Hot Summer Nights events. These family-friendly events offer free entertainment throughout June and July. Here’s a sampling of what we offer: Build-A-Boat. Kids will learn the basics of boat construction as they spend five days alongside our deputies constructing their own boats in teams. They’ll even get to launch them for a maiden voyage. Open Gyms. Looking for a game of pick-up basketball? Your little athletes will get to play with their peers fully supervised in our school gyms over the summer during scheduled hours. Hours vary by school, so be sure to check for the full schedule. Youth on the Rise. Dads Just Want To Have Fun 31 Unforgettable Father’s Day Outings

Before you start preparing that traditional breakfast in bed for dad on Father’s Day, consider some of these outings first, especially if dad is itching for an adventure this year. And don’t forget to snap photos of everyone enjoying dad’s special day because this is going to be his best Father’s Day yet. 1. High Score Dad. Whether dad likes vintage video games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders or prefers a few rounds of Skee-Ball and pinball, a trip to the arcade is a sure-fire way to light up the day. 2. Soaring Dad. Remember the song, “Let’s Go Fly A Kite” from the Disney film Mary Poppins? If you don’t have a kite tucked away in your garage, stop at the store on your way to the best kiteflying park in town. 3. Slip And Slide Dad. You’ve got a whole day of splashinggood fun ahead of you at the nearest water park. Arrive early to beat the long lines. 4. Root, Root, Rooting Dad. Take dad out to the ball game, take him out with the crowd. Buy him some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and he will smile all day while he cheers for the home team. 5. Biscuits & Gravy Dad. Let’s face it, one of the best places to go on Father’s Day is out to brunch. Hit dad’s favorite greasy spoon or surprise dad with a new-to-him restaurant you think he’ll love. Reservations are a good idea. 6. Angler Dad. If dad loves fishing, don’t try to worm your way out of it. Dig him up some worms on Saturday or buy some at your local pet store. Then haul out or borrow the gear, and off you all go! 7. Tomahawking Dad. Some dads love nothing more than a nice long game of Frisbee. Families who run together can work their way up from short to long races over the years. 24. Strike-loving Dad. Of course, dad doesn’t need to use the bumpers, but younger kids can. There are 17 breweries in Collier, Lee, and Charlotte Counties. Many are family friendly, but it’s a good idea to call ahead to see if the kids should stay home. Scalloping Season: Mother Nature’s Own Pac-Man Game

t’s mid July, the second week of scalloping season on the Steinhatchee River, in what locals claim is the scalloping capital of the world. It’s my first time, and I’m psyched. On good advice, I skipped the first week, when an astounding 200 boats per hour queue up at the local marina to claim the first harvest. Our professional guide holds the license and provides everything we need: masks, snorkels and flippers, long-handled nets, buckets, and water. We brought our own snacks. Our fiberglass flatboat idles along over a sandbar in the clear water of Deadman Bay. “See that?” Our guide points. “No,” I’m thinking, “not really.” I’m looking for those bright yellow and orange creatures that played percussion in The Little Mermaid. I’m still squinting into the swaying eelgrass when our guide posts his Diver Down flag, pulls on his fins, spits into his snorkel mask, and disappears over the side. Seconds later he surfaces, waving his net containing half a dozen sand-brown scallops. We’re in! One breast stroke to the bottom, and I come eyeball to-eyeball (actually, a gazillion electric blue eyeballs) staring at me from a big fat, barely opened scallop shell. I reach out gingerly and pick it up. While I’m thinking, “wow, this is easy,” whoosh – it propels itself backward out of my hand like a Pac-Man on steroids. If I’ve made a spectacle of myself with my frantic retreat, the guide kindly pretends not to notice.

“You have to scoop ‘em up,” he instructs, deftly slipping the rim of his dip-net under an unsuspecting wide-open scallop and flipping it in like a pancake. The creature snaps closed and lands on the pile at the net’s bottom. So easy, a four-year-old can do it! I’m lazily floating along, marveling at starfish and purple-spotted pinfish, scoring a scallop every couple of minutes. I lower the net to flick in an especially pretty pale yellow one, and suddenly, three jet-propelled scallops rocket up from the bottom of my net and plop back into the murky grass, leaving nothing but a trail of bubbles. This time I laugh out loud and swallow a big mouthful of salt water. There’s sport in this after all! Though it could technically take as little as an hour to harvest the legal limit of two gallons per person in the shells – or one pint shucked – daytrippers stretch out the snorkeling experience all day, with a picnic lunch and plenty of sunscreen. Most people plan to eat their catch, as we did the first time. You can have them shucked on site and many local restaurants will cook them for you. Nowadays, for me, the fun is snorkeling around the eelgrass beds, playing nature’s own Pac-Man game with those crafty little blue-eyed guys, and sending them back for another day. Tips for scallopers • Bay scallop beds can be found from Tarpon Springs to Port St. Joe in Florida’s panhandle. The season is different for each county. The faithful will scallop every weekend till season’s end. • The Steinhatchee area (Taylor and Dixie Counties) and Crystal River (Citrus County) currently have the largest scallop populations. Their 2018 season is July 1-September 24. • Per-person scalloping charters start around $75 with group rates from about $350 to $500 (up to 8 people). Ask if you need to bring your own snorkel equipment. • If you go on your own you’ll need a license. • You don’t actually need a boat for great scalloping. At Hagan’s Cove, 14 miles north of Steinhatchee, for example, you can wade right into the marsh. It’s also a favorite put-in place for kayaks and there are nice picnic pavilions. • Avoid the crowds and go mid-week, and book your accommodations as soon as you’ve finished reading this article! • Everything else you need to know is here: myfwc.com/fishing/ saltwater/recreational/bay-scallops.

We all watched our dad work hard, treat people fairly and honestly, and provide for us, and he was the example we followed on how to handle life. I always think: “How would Dad handle this?” My mom always loved the Rod Stewart song Forever Young and it’s now my goal: Keep that young, youthful energy in everything I do. My older brother Anthony first sparked my interest into law enforcement, but my real drive to follow through came from my son. He is my driving force to become something better and someone that he could look up to. What is the hardest part about your job? Working on a night shift makes it extremely hard to be a part of day-time or after school activities. Also working on holidays, when being around family is most important. The up and down stressors of the job can be a heavy burden. It can be difficult at times to leave work at work. What is the best part about your job? Every day is different. Some days it’s the same people with a different problem, the same problems but different people, or something that has never been seen before! The most gratifying part is a simple “Thank you” from someone I just helped, whether it’s finding a lost dog, or saving the life of a loved one. Each “thank you” reinforces the desire to do this job day in and day out.

To find a career that was family oriented – something positive that could be seen as a role model for my kids. What is the hardest part about your job? The hardest part is the schedule. Firefighters work 24 hours on and 48 hours off so it can be challenging at times. What is the best part about your job? The camaraderie. The feeling you get when you know you just made a positive impact on someone’s day or even their life. What is a typical weeknight like for your family? Between my fiance and I, we have three kids. It’s homework, then to baseball practice or dance class or gymnastics, and then dinner. We try to squeeze a few minutes in to relax together before bedtime. How has your profession made you a better parent and partner? This profession has made me a better person/parent all around. Unfortunately, sometimes we get to see firsthand how so many other people live with struggles. It reminds me to stay humble and never take anything for granted. Best parenting advice? My father, Tony DiSarro, said, “Everything in moderation.” He taught us to always have a balance between work, friends, and family.

s the whirlwind of the last few weeks of school fly by, I find myself ready for the long, unscheduled days of summer. Sleeping in, spending our afternoons poolside, and playing hide and seek until the fireflies come out. Realistically, my idea of carefree summer days come from my youth and not from the summers our own kids typically experience. Camps, playdates, and ball games fill up most of our calendars while any free time is consumed by parent-planned educational activities and crafts seen on social media. While these things aren’t bad, it can be a little daunting for parents due to the pressure to plan every minute of their child’s summer. I have declared this summer to be different. My kids will have the kind of summer I had as a child. One that is less scheduled and more free play, less video games and more outside time, and less parent-planned and more child-created. If, like me, you are tired of feeling pressure to entertain and educate your child every waking moment, use these tips to enjoy your summer, 1970s style. Ditch the excess Today parents often feel the need to sign their kids up for as many camps, clinics, and activities as possible to fill their days. In the 70s, kids did not spend their days at baseball camp, they played baseball with the neighbor kids in the backyard. They didn’t attend theater and dance camps but instead made up their own show to perform for parents and siblings. Give your kids the gift of free time to play and try things on their own. If kids are away at camps all summer, they won’t have time to create their own adventures. Unplug Today we love our electronics. It is unlikely that many of us can make it more than a few hours without checking in with social media and responding to emails and texts. Our kids are no different, but limits should be set on screen time to allow kids to experience outdoor play, the joy of curling up with a good book, and allowed time to use their own imaginations. 1970s kids didn’t have apps, educational or not, to entertain them and fill their days. Instead, they used their imagination to create inventions with recycled trash,

build forts with whatever they could find, and cooperate with other kids to create games that could last for hours. Go outside “Go outside and come back when it’s dinner time.” is what my parents would say nearly every afternoon when I was growing up. There were no scheduled playdates, meet ups at the park, or specific activities planned. If I wanted to go to the park, I would ride my bike or walk there. If I wanted a friend to come along, I would swing by their house on the way and knock on the door to see if they wanted to join me. My parents had only a vague idea where I was or who I was with and this was the norm. While many parents don’t feel quite as safe giving their child free rein, we can learn from this attitude. Kids do not need us to plan and intervene in their daily activities. Send them outside, have them go knock on a neighbor’s door, and ask them to join them. Play in the sprinkler, ride bikes, draw with chalk, drink from the hose, learn to do cartwheels, jump rope, plant flowers, or simply sit in the sun. Go outside and don’t come home until dinner. Let it go Parents today have so much pressure to live up to unrealistic standards. We feel we must provide educational crafts and wellbalanced extracurricular activities and plan interesting and affordable outings, all while simultaneously cooking healthy, organic food, maintaining a clean house and a healthy marriage, and balancing our careers. The truth is, none of us are able to keep up with it all. The 1970s parent, while balancing many of the career and family obligations we have today, did not put the type of pressure parents today place on themselves. This summer, take a break from the pressures of social media, enjoy your kids, join them outside, play a board game, have a movie night, lounge at the pool, eat a little (or a lot of) junk food, and give yourself permission to let things go and accept you can’t realistically keep up with everything anyway. The key to giving your kids, and yourself, a 1970s summer is to unplug, enjoy, and ease up on the pressures we place on ourselves. t’s summer in Southwest Florida. Hot, humid, steamy summer. So, you’re escaping to the great beyond. The glory of the open road beckons. It’s the American dream – just you, a tent or a camper, the family mini-van, an endless variety of snacks, and a couple weeks of vacation stretching out in front of you and your children. Maybe you’re taking a cross-country road trip to the Grand Canyon. Or, maybe you’ve decided to spend some time in the mountains of North Georgia. Camping opens up a world of possibilities for cost-conscious families who want to unplug, build a shared experience, and get in touch with the natural world. Though camping may sound idyllic, these types of trips require a great deal of planning and preparation, particularly when it comes to food. Tent camping requires either a plug-in camping

refrigerator or large coolers for proper perishables storage. There are lots of ways to make meal preparation and cooking easy, and to involve the entire family. Camping as a family requires several essential tools. Many families use a slow cooker or Instant Pot when at a site with a plug-in. Also, you’ll want some way to brew coffee – either a plug-in coffee maker or a percolator that can heat over a fire or stove top. Speaking of which, you’ll need a propane camp stove. They’re affordable, easy to use, and make life simpler while attempting to prepare food for the entire family (think scrambled eggs, steamed veggies, taco meat, pancakes, etc.) Also, keep in mind that most sites have grills along with a fire pit. Campfire Banana Splits (Recipe submitted by Toni Boncella Blyth on allrecipes.com) 6 large bananas, unpeeled, stems removed 2 cups chocolate chips 1 package miniature marshmallows Cooking spray and aluminum foil Preheat the grill, or prepare your campfire. Spray four sheets of aluminum foil with cooking spray. Slice the peel of the banana from stem to bottom, while slicing the banana inside lengthwise. Carefully open the banana just wide enough to place the chocolate chips and marshmallows inside the peel with the banana. Wrap the bananas with the foil, and place on the grill or directly in the coals of a fire. Leave in long enough to melt the chocolate chips and marshmallows (about five minutes). Unwrap, and eat with a spoon. Easy Foil Packs (Recipe courtesy of Monica Meistrell) 1 pound ground beef or turkey 1 onion, diced 1 can corn 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 pound diced potatoes 1 can diced tomatoes 1 jar salsa Cooking spray and aluminum foil Brown the meat in a skillet along with the onion. Remove from the heat, and drain the fat. Mix all ingredients together and store in freezer bags. When you’re ready to heat up the food, spray large sheets of foil with cooking spray. Place the food in the middle of the sheets of foil. Bring the long sides together, and make tight folds until the foil is flat up against the food. Tightly roll up shorter sides. Cook over hot coals or on the grill for 15-20 minutes. Let cool for a bit before eating. Campfire Chili (Recipe adapted from www.savingmoneycamping.com) 1 pound ground beef 1 large onion, diced 1 green pepper, diced 1 can corn 1 can black beans 1 can pinto beans 1 can kidney beans 1 can tomatoes with chilies 1 packet chili seasoning mix 1 packet ranch dressing mix 1 cup water Salt and pepper, to taste Brown the beef with the onion in a large stock pot. Remove from the heat, and drain off the fat. Stir in all remaining ingredients and place in large freezer bags. Refrigerate until ready to use. Freezer Breakfast Burritos (Recipe courtesy of www.beyondthetent.com) 1 onion, diced 1 green pepper, diced 1 package of breakfast sausage 1 pound bacon 1 pound red potatoes, cubed 1 pound cheddar cheese, shredded 12 eggs ½ cup milk ¼ cup olive oil 2 teaspoons paprika Salt and pepper to taste 12 flour tortillas Cook the bacon until crisp. Let it cool, and chop it into small pieces. Pan fry the breakfast sausage with the onion and green pepper. Strain the grease, and let it cool. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Toss the potatoes in salt, pepper, and paprika. Spread potatoes on a baking sheet, and bake for 15 minutes. Flip the potatoes, and then bake them in the oven for another 15 minutes until browned. Let them cool. Crack eggs into a medium bowl and add milk. Whisk. Scramble in a frying pan over medium heat until cooked through. Let them cool. Prepare burritos by adding cheese, eggs, potatoes, meat, peppers, and onions to the flour tortillas, one at a time. Fold the bottom of the tortilla up, then fold the sides and top in. Lay the burrito seam-side down on a baking sheet. Freeze for one hour. Wrap each burrito in tin foil and place in a large plastic bag. Store them in the freezer. When you are ready to eat them, place them on the outer coals of the campfire or on top of the fire grate to warm them up for 5-10 minutes.

Campfire Tex Mex White Bean Chicken Packets (Recipe submitted by Karlynn Johnston on thekitchenmagpie.com) 1 can navy beans, drained and rinsed 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes, drained 1 can of corn 1 tablespoon Mexican spice blend 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, chopped ½ cup shredded Mexican blend cheese Chopped green onion Aluminum foil Combine all ingredients, except for the cheese and green onion, in a large bowl. Store in a freezer bag prior to preparing packets. Place ¼ of the mixture on each of four large foil squares. Fold up the foil into packets so the mixture won’t leak. Place on a grill or grate over a campfire. Cook for 25 minutes, turning the packets occasionally so that everything is cooked evenly. When the chicken has been cooked thoroughly, remove from the heat and cool slightly. Top with cheese and green onions. neafamily.com

Navigating Step-Parent Adoption

hat happens when a parent remarries and a step-parent takes an active role in the child’s life while the other biological parent has all but disappeared? What if the child and step-parent wish to make the title of “Mommy” or “Daddy” more official? In Florida, there is a remedy for step-parents who want to become a legal parent of a child, and that is a process commonly referred to as step-parent adoption. Florida allows a step-parent to adopt a minor child so long as certain procedural steps are met. While the legislature has attempted to simplify the process for individuals, you may find it helpful to seek assistance from a licensed experienced family law attorney who can navigate the procedural requirements for adoption. There are a few main issues that you will need to consider and address in your pursuit of adoption: one, whether the step-parent is legally allowed to adopt; two, notice to the court; three, consent or termination of the biological parent’s rights; four, providing notice; and five, the legal consequences of adoption. Anyone may be adopted, including minor children and adults. In order for the step-parent to be eligible to adopt the child, he or she must have either the consent of the spouse (the child’s biological parent) or, if the spouse fails to give consent or join in the petition, then

the court must find that the step-parent adoption is either in the best interests of the child or there is good cause shown for the adoption. The second step in the step-parent adoption process is to file a petition with the circuit court in the county where the step-parent resides. The step-parent is the petitioner of the case, as he or she is requesting the court to grant the adoption. The petition must be sworn in the presence of a notary and include specific facts regarding the birth and history of the child and the step-parent’s relationship history with the child. In order for the petition to be granted, the step-parent must provide a sworn affidavit from the child’s biological parent (not the spouse) consenting to the adoption. In the event the biological parent cannot be located or refuses to consent, then the biological parent’s rights must be terminated pursuant to Florida law. This process itself can be daunting, but in order for the court to terminate the biological parent’s rights, the petitioner will have to show that the biological parent has abandoned the child; the parent has engaged in behavior that endangers the life, safety, well-being or health of the child; the parent will be incarcerated for a majority of the child’s minority; and/or the parent fails to appear at a final hearing. If the petition to terminate the parent’s rights is granted, then the step-

parent will be allowed to adopt the minor child so long as the court finds that it is in the child’s best interests. Some legal consequences of adoption to keep in mind are that the adoptive step-parent will have all parental rights of a biological parent, including, but not limited to, custody and time-sharing, and be liable for child support in a later dissolution of marriage proceeding. Further, the stepparent may be liable in litigation for the actions of the child and the adoption may affect the child’s inheritance. Once the adoption is complete, the law treats the adoptive child as the biological child of the adoptive step-parent throughout his or her entire life. The step-parent adoption process may be daunting, but with the assistance of an experienced and qualified family law attorney, the process should be simplified and the outcome rewarding for the family.
