5 REASONS YOUR CHILDREN NEED TO EXPLORE YMCA SUMMER CAMP WYHOWAY Summer Day Camps at the Y share one thing: they’re about discovery. Children have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s fun too. Here are 5 reasons to explore summer camp at the Y: Core Values: Unlike many other summer camps that aim to keep kids only physically active, the YMCA takes pride in teaching core values alongside their regular camp activities. Caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are taught through daily lessons, games and talks. An entire summer in a new environment, making new friends and learning about values is what the YMCA Summer Camp offers the kids of Collier County. 20 Acres of Adventure: The Greater Naples YMCA sits on 20 fenced acres for campers to explore with experienced camp counselors and guides. Canoeing, archery, rope challenge courses, swimming, tennis, basketball, baseball, rock wall, arts and crafts and so much more are there to explore. Not to mention, our 96,000 square foot Wellness Center which makes for great indoor exploration on those pesky rainy days.

Social Development: Summer camp for kids, aged kindergarten through 5th grade, is a perfect time for kids to form new friendships and develop life-long social skills. The camps at the YMCA take careful planning to put kids of similar age and abilities in groupings that will best suit their needs and encourage social interaction and growth. Peace of Mind for Parents: YMCA Summer Camp Counselors are trained in adult and pediatric CPR and First Aid to keep your campers safe. Fire drills, lost camper drills, weekly swim assessments and weather safety practices are all part of the 30+ hours of training every camp counselor receives at the YMCA. Rest easy knowing our staff is well trained to assess and manage all potential emergency situations. National Park Service Collaborative: The partnership with the National Park service connects YMCA Summer Camp children to nature while creating a movement to foster the next generation of leaders and outdoor stewards.
We also offer specialty sports camps for those children who wish to concentrate on specific sports during the summer, chaperoned transit service in partnership with CAT transit as well as scholarships to families of children who otherwise could not afford camp. Stop in today and see all that the Y has to offer to make this summer the BEST. SUMMER.EVER! Visit www.greaternaplesymca.org to register today or for more information.

THIS MONTH:
Happy Mother’s Day to me!
As I write this, I am just back in Naples after spending 2 weeks in California for my daughter’s wedding. There’s nothing like walking your only child down the aisle towards her future to put you in the mood for reflection. I’ve said more than a few times that I won the daughter lottery–Alex has brought nothing but happiness to my life and my gratitude that I was blessed with my wonderful child is boundless. This Mother’s Day I get to celebrate in another way–as a mother-in-law. My new son-in-law Britton is not just the perfect partner for my daughter but everything I could have asked for in a son. I am doubly blessed and eternally grateful. We’re celebrating Mother’s Day with two articles in this issue: Anna Futrell visited Our Mother’s Home and Sunlight House. Both organizations are dedicated to helping local mothers by providing specialized services. Stacy Nicolau spoke with Katie Field, a Naples mother who is hoping her new app will change the way you share your family photos. We’re also celebrating teachers with Anna’s article on Teacher Appreciation Week on pages 40-41. She profiles 3 special teachers plus offers a few ideas on what teachers really want as gifts. Leigh Ann Newman–the mother of our book review columnist Rachel–is also a certified swim instructor and she has some really important information in her “Why I Hate Floaties” article on pages 44-45. In addition, this is our annual Vacation Bible School Directory month. You’ll find the directory on pages 18-19 and on page 20, Sherry Kendrick shares her experience leading a Vacation Bible School in Nicaragua. To all the mothers reading, I hope your Mother’s Day is as special as you!

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE
By Julie Sprague, Collier County School Board
An Important Reminder for Parents and Students:
Prom Safety Tips
T
here are many rites of passage for high school upperclassmen but probably none as big as prom or graduation. The months of April and May are considered “prom season,” a time where students get dressed up and dance the night away. It can also be a dangerous time of year. I want to make sure our teens in Collier County stay safe and make this a night to remember for all the right reasons. Two of the major concerns I often hear about during this time of year are underage drinking and drinking and driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), for the past several years during prom weekend, approximately 300 teens have died in alcoholrelated car accidents. Also according to the NHTSA, one in three children under age 21 who died in alcohol-related accidents died during prom and graduation season.
Here are a few ways parents can help their teens stay safe during prom: • Make sure your child knows the dangers of drinking and driving. Have that conversation with them leading up to prom night. • Know the details of prom from your child’s school. • Ask what your child’s plans are throughout the night and address transportation plans. • Don’t provide alcohol to teens at a party. An American Medical Association study reported that 10% of parents believed it was appropriate and safe for underage teens to attend both prom and graduation parties where alcohol is served, if a parent is present. Know where your child will be before and after prom and whether alcohol will be served. • Give your son or daughter the option to call you if they are ever in a situation where they’re too drunk to drive or if they are with an intoxicated driver.
There are also tips you can share with your child: • • • •
Teens should plan for safe transportation before prom night. Make sure they never leave their drinks unattended. Never drink and drive, and if a friend has been drinking, make sure they don’t drive. Encourage them to watch out for one another during and after the dance
Most importantly, make sure they enjoy themselves. This is a big night for both you and your child and will be one they’ll never forget. I hope you can use some of these tips to ease your prom anxieties and ensure every child is safe.

The “Girls Entering Engineering Club” Encourages Girls to Share Their Passion W
hen Alexa Pellechia competed in the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Solar Go-Kart Race last year, she was the only girl, not only on the Gulf Coast High School (GCHS) team, but in the entire competition. Finishing her sophomore year, Pellechia knew she couldn’t be the only girl out there interested in engineering. It’s a sentiment echoed by fellow females at the school who entered the NAF (National Academy Foundation) Engineering Academy in its inaugural year. “We were all in engineering last year. We took the starting class in the academy,” says sophomore Madisyn Tedro. “We all really enjoyed it, but it was kind of weird because it was a predominately male class.” When speaking to other girls, they wondered two things, why weren’t more girls taking engineering and how they could convince them to get involved. “We just sat down, brainstormed, and the next year, we perused what we talked about, and it became this,” says sophomore Sophia Kvachneva. And like that, the Girls Entering Engineering Club (GEEC) was formed. With a mission to share their passion for engineering, the GEECs hope to introduce the field to young girls. 10
neafamily.com
“Engineering is becoming more relevant as time goes on, and a lot more fields are developing. Right now, there aren’t as many females working in these fields as males or pursuing these degrees in college. If we can somehow engage girls and say, ‘hey you can study these fields too,’ those numbers would increase,” Pellechia says. Just this year, they’ve visited many local elementary schools to talk to girls about engineering, and also spoke at the district’s iSTEM Conference and FGCU’s Project Lead the Way. When they’re not inspiring others, the GEECs are challenging themselves, and their major goal was the Solar Go-Kart Race. Pellechia became the project manager of the first all-girls team in race history. “It was great to have all these girls want to participate, unlike the previous year when it was all guys. Having a smaller group of girls, we could all work on the small projects together and really get an idea of how each piece worked before moving on to the next part.” “Parents were cheering, there were people from other schools cheering. Even the boys from other schools were coming over and saying, ‘Whoa, this is really cool. How did you do this?’ It was really cool to share that with other people,” Tedro says.
They might’ve been newcomers, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from their results. The GEECs placed second in the relay competition and third in the speed races. The GCHS boys’ team won the overall championship, and while the GEECs celebrated with them, Tedro says they really know what to fix to make sure they take home the title next year. After working on the go-kart for five months, the GEECs are looking toward the future of their club. “We want to have a GEEC Club or some type of girl’ STEM club in every high school in Collier County. We found it was so important for us to have this connection with other girls who share the same passion, and we think that if we had that on a broad scale, even more girls would be drawn to the field,” Tedro says. Right now, they’re contacting teachers at every high school and spreading their message. She says she hopes other schools will begin their clubs as soon as the next school year. Sophomore Viva Lass sums it up. “People think that girls aren’t interested in the engineering field, but being in class just proves that we are out there, we are interested, and we want more females to feel the same way.” NEAPOLITANfamily • May 2016

RACHEL RECOMMENDS
Book Reviews
RACHEL NEWMAN is 10 years old and in the fifth grade at Sea Gate Elementary. She is active in Irish dancing, piano, flute, acting and volleyball. Writing, reading, and watching “I Love Lucy” are her great joys, along with taking pictures of her cats.
Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians: The Shark Rider by Ellen Prager
“The Shark Rider” is a book about a teenager named Tristan Hunt, who has underwater powers: he can speak to sharks and sting rays. Last year (this is the second book in a series), Tristan found out about his powers and became part of a summer camp that helped any children who had special powers relating to the ocean/sea. In this book, Tristan and his friends are going on their first mission due to the older group getting ill. Tristan’s adventure is life-threatening and full of surprises. In his journey, he must find out who or what is creating the strange activity going on in the ocean around Virgin Gorda. Author Ellen Prager is a marine biologist who found a love in writing. She’s written 21 books and has a third Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians coming out in the spring. At first when Dr. Prager started writing, she wrote for younger children and for adults. But soon teachers told her she had skipped an entire age group. Dr. Prager then chose to create Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians for tweens and teens. This isn’t my all-time favorite book because I felt some of it was predictable and there was too much happening. I enjoy stories that really get me leaning in one direction and then turn me completely around in another direction. With so much action it was harder to comprehend everything and remember a decent amount of the book when I finished it. I did enjoy when Tristan talked to a young shark, a female black tip. When I was reading Tristan’s conversation with her, I imagined the shark having a southern accent. It was very funny. She used the words “honey” and “sugar” and she was a VEGAN shark. Just imagine a vegan shark! This book was not my favorite, but it is definitely a yes for children who love action and science. Please let me know what YOU think about the book. Remember, I’m always open to recommendations. I might even mention you in the column if I write a book on your recommendation! Just send me an email at info@neafamily. com with “Rachel Recommends” in the subject line. 12

NEW MOM’S CORNER
By Anna Futrell
Help For New Moms Our Mother’s Home and Sunlight Home both offer support for needy new mothers in Southwest Florida.
A
s a new mom, my desire is to help other new moms, particularly as they go through pregnancy and the newborn phase. If you are like me in your desire to reach out and help others, I want to share with you some ways that we, as moms, can come together and support other new moms in Southwest Florida.
Our Mother’s Home
I had the opportunity to visit Our Mother’s Home in San Carlos Park. Established in 2000, the home is specifically for young women in the foster care system who are pregnant and want to keep their babies. Its mission is to end the repetitive cycle of foster care and generational poverty that afflicts teen mothers and their children. This organization exists for the purpose of transitioning teen mothers and their children from foster care and human trafficking to stable, happy, and productive lives by providing a safe and nurturing home, education, parenting support, and physical, mental, and spiritual care. Our Mother’s Home is a private 501(c)3 organization that raises about 50-60% of its funding through donations. Families who foster children receive a monthly stipend from the state. If one of the young women in their care becomes pregnant and would like to keep her baby, the state does not offer a stipend for that baby – just for the mother. As such, many foster families are unable to continue having the mother and her baby live in their home. Our Mother’s Home provides a way for young women in foster care to transition out of the system and to keep their babies with them. Length of stay ranges from a few months to several years. Young women receive training in baby care, food purchasing and preparation, and personal finances. They are held accountable for attending school and completing homework. They receive counseling and help in the transition out of the home and into a job and living situation. Graduates from the program often go on to pursue higher education and various career paths. Since its opening, Our Mother’s Home has housed more than 200 women and babies, and boasts a 90% success rate of preserving families through successfully transitioning foster mothers to self-sufficiency. For more information on the home, you can visit www.ourmothershome.com. How You Can Help • Host a Sweet Sixteen Party. Our Mother’s Home is in its sixteenth year of operation, and as such, is encouraging members of the community to pledge support by hosting “Sweet Sixteen” parties. These parties can be hosted anywhere with the support of Our Mother’s Home staff 16

and administration. They are designed to introduce people to the mission and vision of Our Mother’s Home and to encourage giving and participation. • Volunteer. For information about participating as a volunteer at Our Mother’s Home, contact the home directly by calling (239) 267-4663 or visiting www.ourmothershome.com. • Donate Items. Our Mother’s Home has a long wish list. If you have partial boxes of diapers your baby has outgrown, baby food, non-perishable food, maternity clothes, baby clothes, baby products, or baby gear, consider donating these items to Our Mother’s Home rather than selling them.
Sunlight Home
Located in Naples, Sunlight Home is a residential maternity home that provides a safe, loving, family atmosphere that serves pregnant women physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Founded in 1994, Sunlight Home was created to help break the cycle of poverty and abuse for pregnant women and teens through a Christ-centered environment. Since its opening, the home has served hundreds of women and children. “We’ve had stays for as short as one day
up to as long as three years. Every mom has unique needs, and we seek to meet those needs,” says Director Linda Hale. “We are all about our mission of restoring hope by helping moms reunite with their families. Each situation looks very different, so that is accomplished in different ways.” As a 501(c)3 organization, Sunlight Home is not-for-profit and does not take any type of government assistance, and instead relies on support from individuals, churches, and other private organizations. “Our mission is to provide a Christcentered, safe environment for pregnant women,” Hale says. “We have birth classes, parenting classes, Bible studies, counseling, financial mentoring, and other educational opportunities for our residents. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
By Sherry Kendrick, Children’s Director, Covenant Church
A Different Kind of Vacation Bible School
O
ver the years I’ve probably planned 20 or more different Vacation Bible Schools (VBS). Some of them have been small with 50 kids and some of them have been much bigger with more than 300. But this past March, I had the privilege of embarking on a new VBS adventure: bringing Vacation Bible School to Nicaragua for about 20 missionary kids ranging in age from one to 13. Every two years, Missionary Ventures International hosts a spiritual retreat for its Central American missionaries to enjoy a time of learning and also to enjoy time with each other. My associate pastor, Dr. Trent Casto, was asked to be a conference speaker to the missionaries regarding the spiritual importance of the mercy ministries they have to many families in Nicaragua. My friends, Emily and Susan, and I went to take care of the missionary kids. We flew to Managua, Nicaragua, late one Sunday afternoon, and then embarked on a threehour ride from the airport to the edge of the rain forest. We were excited to provide a fun, faith-based experience, so we brought a pirate-themed VBS program with us. This meant packing everything we needed for Bible stories, crafts, games, and music into suitcases. It wasn’t easy, but we did it. And, most importantly, the kids loved it. They relished making crafts and pretending to be pirates with their eye patches and
bandanas. The older kids even performed a pirate-themed play for us on what they had learned. We played and sang and snacked – just like we do in Vacation Bible School here at home. It was different because it was small and in one little room and with all ages together, but it was still the same in how much we enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing our faith journey together. Argh, ye matey!
SHERRY KENDRICK is the Children’s Director of Covenant Church of Naples.. An educator for over 30 years in both school and church settings, Sherry says being a children’s director is her dream job because it combines her love of children with her love of her faith.

oon after my son Alex turned two years old, a close friend of mine commented that his gait was “gimpy.” A late walker at almost 18 months, I dismissed her observation as overly critical and chalked it up to his newly minted mobile skills. Still, I brought it up with my pediatrician and she, too, determined he was just fine. Over the next year his “gimpy-ness” At three years old, Alex became a more pronounced hobble, was diagnosed with Juvepartnered with a loss of appetite and nile Rheumatoid Arthritis weight, along with fatigue and cranki(JRA), a rare childhood ness. When his hands and feet became disease that affects only swollen, the pediatrician sent Alex to about 300,000 children a pediatric orthopedist, which still in the United States. JRA resulted in no diagnosis. Finally, when was later renamed JuveAlex was no longer able to close his nile Idiopathic Arthritis hands into a fist, the pediatrician sent (JIA) to include more peus to a Miami rheumatologist who took diatric autoimmune disone look at him from across the room eases affecting the joints as and simply stated: “Well, it’s obvious he well as other body systems. has arthritis.” After hearing a litany of treatments, appointments, and medication risks, the only question I could muster up was “is he going to be able to play football one day?” I don’t even like football. At three years old, Alex was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA), a rare childhood disease that affects only about 300,000 children in the United States. JRA was later renamed Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) to include more pediatric autoimmune diseases affecting the joints as well as other body systems. According to the American College of Rheumatology, JIA is diagnosed based on the presence of the following symptoms for at least six weeks: inflammation of one or more joints, persistent fever or rash, joint stiffness when awakening, limping, difficulty with fine NEAPOLITANfamily • May 2016
motor skills, reluctance to use an arm or leg, reduced activity level, and inflammation of the eye. Many children do not experience all of these symptoms. Lab work may be positive for rheumatoid factor or antinuclear antibody (ANA) but need not be positive for diagnosis. Lyme disease and lupus also must be ruled out. Alex began treatment with steroids, anti-inflammatories, and weekly injections of Enbrel and methotrexate. We used special numbing cream so he could bravely face the shots and learned how to swallow pills by practicing with Tic-Tac candies. These medications focus on suppressing his immune system and keep it from attacking his joints and organs. As a result, he cannot receive live virus vaccines and must avoid serious illnesses. Physical and occupational therapists worked with him to improve his mobility, strength, and fine motor skills. Early and aggressive treatment is important to arrest the disease and prevent long-term damage to the joints and disability, his doctors explained. Because JIA is rare, there are very few pediatric rheumatologists in the United States and there are none in Southwest Florida. Like many other patients, we must travel to receive specialized care. While some local patients travel to Miami, St. Petersburg, Orlando or Gainesville, we ultimately chose a pediatric rheumatology program at Duke Children’s Hospital in North Carolina. Three year-old Cade Lawhon, son of Megan and Tony Lawhon of Naples, was diagnosed last year with oligoarthritis, a type of JIA that involves one to four joints. Megan says his first symptom was a swollen ankle that would not get better, even with a cast. In addition to seeing an Orlando pediatric rheumatologist every three months and two local opthalmologists for uveitis (a common symptom of JIA that involves dangerous inflammation of the eye), Cade is being treated by a holistic chiropractor. Megan says that after his diagnosis she was most worried about her son losing his vision due to the uveitis and also that he would not be able to enjoy sports one day. After Cade received steroid injections into his affected joints and switched to a gluten and dairy-free diet, his mom states that he has returned to life as an energetic and active little boy. “I would highly recommend talking to a parent of a child with JIA,” Megan says she would advise parents of newly diagnosed children. “The information available online is daunting, but personal experiences offer a light at the end of the tunnel.” Now 13 years old, my son Alex must remain on his weekly injections to stay in remission, but his disease is controlled and he is thrilled to begin his third season of football with the Naples Gators. He also has received the honor of being the Youth Honoree at the Walk to Cure Arthritis in Boca Raton on May 7. Alex hopes to help raise money and awareness for kids like him who struggle with this painful disease. “I want more people to be aware that kids get arthritis too, and you can’t tell by looking at them,” Alex states on his team page. “I really want to let kids who are newly diagnosed know that, while they may have to start taking a lot of medicines, they don’t have to necessarily give up the activities that they love the most and that they can be a normal kid.” For more information, go to www.kidsgetarthritistoo.org. MOTHER’S DAY
By Stacy Nicolau
Local Mom is the Picture of Innovation Naples mother Katie Field is a driving force behind a photo application that organizes photos in a private virtual space that can be accessed by invited friends and family.
C
urrently, there are over 5,000 photos of my children marooned on my iPhone and tens of thousands floating around somewhere on a digital cloud. Almost none have been printed except for a precious few that made it into my first child’s baby book. Like most parents on Facebook, I am eager to share the best of my kids’ childhood moments with those who care to witness them. But not every one of my “friends” wants to see all of these pictures, and after they are posted they seem to disappear into a digital wasteland. In this era of over sharing, Naples mom Katie Field began to imagine an application that could help her manage and share all of her favorite photos of her children without annoying her Facebook friends. For her twins, she explained, she documented everything in a baby book. But when her third child was born, she regrets that she only accomplished writing his name in the baby book. With three sons under the age of 5, this busy mom wanted an easy tool to help her document her family life. Together with her husband Farouk AlShorafa, a computer systems engineer and Florian Vlad, a founder of media publishing site Twinzapp.com, they developed BUN, a photo application that piggybacks onto Facebook to organize photos in a private
virtual space that can be accessed by invited friends and family. The tool, which appears under Facebook albums in a profile, uses the digital time stamp to organize her uploads into albums for each of children. Special events also can be designated. Only invited friends and family can view the pictures on their timelines as they are posted, or look through earlier albums through the app. As her children get older, they can look through their virtual albums and know exactly how old they were in each photo. Unlike regular Facebook posts, the photos cannot be shared by any-
one other than the owner. “I wanted something for each child to tell their story,” Field explains. “This will be their keepsake tailored just for them.” Moms of older children with digital regrets (like me) can take advantage of this tool as well. By uploading photos from their phones and computers, the app will sort the photos and organize them into a timeline for each child. Field and her co-founders also hope that organizations such as sports teams, scouting troops and preschool teachers will benefit from BUN after the app’s next update. Currently, her children’s preschool teachers will text photos of the children to the parents or post them on the school’s Facebook page. BUN would allow small groups to share photos privately among group members. After presenting their idea at the Southwest Florida Venture Pitch event in Naples, BUN received the audience award for “Best Pitch” and generated enough interest for the developers to move forward with designing the app. Launched in the Apple App Store last February, BUN is a free download that currently is available only to Apple iOS users. Future updates will include android availability and a tiered storage plan. Users must have a Facebook account to use the app. For more information go to www. BUNphotos.com.

Show Teachers Some Love!
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2-6
T
eacher Appreciation Weeks is May 2nd – 6th this year, and we would like to introduce three Collier County Public School Teachers who have dedicated their careers to serving our community and helping students grow. There are vast numbers of teachers in Collier County who love helping students learn and grow – teachers who pursue the profession with dedication, hard work, and love. As we honor them the first week of May, we say thank you and we encourage them in their passion for their students. Jenna Shaffer, Poinciana Elementary School Tell us about your background and education. I graduated from the University of North Florida with a BA in Special Education. I fell in love with this area of education when I started babysitting for a family who had a child with severe autism. I enjoyed working one on one with him and being a part of his communication and behavior progress. What do you love about your job? Teaching children with special needs is a job that most people think, “Wow! That must be such a difficult job. I don’t know how you do it.” I think the opposite. I don’t know how I could do any other job! I am so Jenna Shaffer and family
grateful and blessed to have this position. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing a five year old child speak his first word or a student with autism make eye contact with me for the first time. What frustrates you about teaching? I get frustrated with the expectation from the district and/or state that we are considered an effective or highly effective teacher only if our students score a certain way on tests. This is especially frustrating when working with a population of students who have disabilities. Sometimes it can take years before they become successful in a particular area, and most of the time those areas we try and focus on are social emotion/behavior skills rather than measurable academic goals.

Austin Gomez and family
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? What’s that? Right now my life revolves around my two girls and teaching! I also love to read and decorate my home. Austin Gomez, Gulf Coast High School Tell us about your education and teaching experience. I have a BA in Music from Florida State University and a Masters in Music Education (also from FSU). I have been teaching for 16 years, and I have taught elementary, middle and high school music. I began my teaching career in Tennessee and also taught in Tallahassee. I am currently in my fifth year at Gulf Coast High. What do you enjoy about teaching? I love watching students grow in maturity, intellect and musicianship. My position as a band director is unique in that I have students in band all four years, every day.
40
I get to know them really well and make great memories with them. They become like family; our band program is tight-knit. What frustrates you? It is always difficult to accomplish your goals when financing is always such a big issue. Each year, it gets more and more expensive to meet the band’s needs. We are very fortunate here in Collier County to have great support for the arts, but fundraising is and always will be a challenge. At the end of the day, we put the needs of the students first.
What do you do in your spare time? I love to spend time with my family; our favorite hobbies are cycling, swimming, going to the beach, going to the park, playing golf, tennis, roller hockey, ice skating, going to restaurants and watching movies. Debbie Graham, East Naples Middle School Tell us about your background and education. I graduated from the University of South Florida with a BS in Elementary Education. Later, I received my Masters in Educational Leadership from FGCU. Over the past 25 NEAPOLITANfamily • May 2016
years, I have taught in five Collier County Public Schools: Sea Gate Elementary, Laurel Oak Elementary, Avalon Elementary, Lely Elementary, and I presently teach Critical Thinking and STEAM at East Naples Middle School. I enjoy switching schools because it gives me different perspectives; it challenges me, and I get to meet wonderful teachers who inspire me with new ideas. What do love most about teaching? The students! Teaching energizes me; I love to consider new ideas, and I love to see the world from my students’ points of view. I love figuring out how to connect with the students so that whatever I am teaching has meaning and purpose for them. I am constantly amazed by the abilities, passions and creativity of my students. All students are unique, and each one brings unique values, experiences, likes and dislikes, and it is up to me to sort it out and connect with them. Collier County has some absolutely incredible, dedicated teachers, and I love connecting with other educators. I know so many teachers that go above and beyond every single day. What frustrates you about teaching? I get frustrated by paperwork, equipment not working, not having the resources I need when I need them, and I get frustrated by time. It takes so much time to plan and prepare properly – this is both good and bad! What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I like to play with my granddaughter. She is absolutely precious! I like to travel, read, and visit with friends over coffee. I am active at my church, and I serve on the board of Grace Center Foundation (located in Ethiopia). Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week Want to show your child’s teachers how much you are thankful for their hard work and dedication? Show them you care with a thoughtful gift in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. Sometimes the best gift is the simple one. Skip the apple knick nack or candle and opt for a gift card that will surely be appreciated! Coffee and Tea Gift Cards. Most every teacher enjoys stopping for coffee or tea on the way to work. Purchasing a gift card for Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts for your child’s teacher is a very thoughtful way to say thank you for all of their hard work on your child’s behalf. Gift Cards to Major Stores (i.e. Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, Amazon). Many people view gift cards as impersonal, although for teachers, a gift card is the ultimate personal gift. They are able to purchase items for themselves (or their classrooms) that they would otherwise not be able to purchase. Gift cards – for teachers – are very memorable, welcome gifts. Spa Treatment Gift Card. Most teachers would love to spend a day relaxing. Buying your child’s teacher a
manicure, pedicure or other spa treatment is a great way to show you care! If you really want a gift to wrap, consider one of these suggestions: Photo Albums and Picture Frames. Many teachers love to take pictures of their families, their students, and various creative projects. Purchase a picture frame or photo album, and have your child write a thoughtful letter or create a piece of art for his or her teacher, and place it inside the frame or album. Containers, Baskets and Tote Bags. Most teachers love organization systems. Purchase a basket or tote bag and fill with fun items that fit around a theme. For example, you may want to purchase a tote bag and fill it with a beach towel, sunscreen, snacks for the beach, and a water bottle.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
By Leigh Ann Newman
Every time I’m in the toy section at Target, I walk down the aisle of goggles, swim toys, and floaties. And every time I see a parent reach for inflatable arm bands or a something, I want to shout “NO!” and lunge at her and snatch the item out of her hands.
44
T
o most people, this might seem like an extreme reaction, but not to me. I’m a survival swimming instructor here in Naples, and I hate floaties. I may even have to have an “I Hate Floaties” tshirt made. I teach babies and toddlers how to stay safe in the water, and floaties make my job so much harder. So why in the world do I hate floaties? Aren’t they fun for kids, don’t they keep them safe in the water? My answer: kids also think that it’s fun to run out into traffic, and no, they do not keep kids safe. By floaties, I’m referring to inflatable arm bands, bathing suits with floats sewn into them, and puddle jumpers. My definition does not include toys like pool noodles, kick boards, or floats. The problem with floaties is that they give both children and parents a false sense of security. Parents think they can relax and let a child play by himself in the water, forgetting that a kid
Why I Hate Floaties neafamily.com
(even those younger than two years old) can remove any floatie if he really wants to. But more importantly, floaties give children a sense that they can stay afloat in the water at all times. A child who spends most of her time in the pool wearing a floatie believes that she is swimming unassisted, and so will also think that she can stay above the water without a floatie. I want children to respect the water: not to fear it, but to understand that they have limitations. Children who wear floaties all of the time don’t have that understanding. The wrong position The most efficient position for swimming is horizontal. Floaties keep kids vertical. Treading water, or trying to swim with your head above the water takes so much more effort and energy than swimming in the proper horizontal position or floating on your back. When I start a new student,

I can always tell who wears floaties because they start out swimming vertically, and it can take me a long time to correct that. I currently have an 18-month-old student who can swim 10 yards underwater by herself, because her feet are at or near the surface at all times. She has never worn a floatie. Another student, 2.5 years old, can barely cover one yard because his feet drop every time he starts to swim. He is exhausted after those few feet because it’s such a struggle to push his body through the water. He is a floatie addict and cries for his floatie at every lesson. I keep telling him that in a few weeks, he won’t need his floatie because he will be swimming and floating all over the pool by himself. I know many survival instructors who believe floaties should never be used, under any circumstances. I, however, understand that in some situations, floaties can serve a purpose. If you have more than one child, or know that your attention may be taken from the water (at a party, for example), a life jacket or a puddle jumper (please, never, ever use inflatable arm bands) can help, but should never substitute for direct supervision. You also can incorporate floaties into a family play session in the pool. Many of my

swim families use this rule: children have to swim for 20 minutes without a floatie. Many kids end up not resorting to a floatie after the 20 minutes, and those that do have had enough time in the water unassisted to understand their limitations. The best options Life jackets and puddle jumpers have the added benefit of being U.S. Coast Guard approved for use on boats, and life jackets are the hardest of all floaties for a child to remove by himself. Inflatable arm bands can easily be taken off, and also often deflate. Swim suits with floats that you can remove put children out of balance and make swimming difficult. So think twice before you use a floatie, and use them wisely and sparingly. But above all, have fun with your children in the water this summer.
