I start planning for the summer right after Christmas. That may sound ridiculous to some of you, but others may wonder why I start so late. I look forward to the end of school as much as my daughter does. I’m very much aware that my daughter’s summers at home are numbered, so I want to make the most of our time. For our family, summer has always meant camp. Fortunately for us here in Naples, we have a wealth of options from which to choose: camps that focus on the arts, sports, nature, academics, and more. We have gathered together a directory of the best summer camps in Southwest Florida, starting on page 38, to aid you in your decision-making process. If you would like to talk to area camp directors in person, join us at Mercato’s Summer Camp Fair on April 8, starting at 11 a.m. And if you are wondering whether this is the year for your child to try an overnight camp, check out Anna Snyder’s article on page 24. DUCK DUCK GOOSE Rated PG for rude humor and mild action/peril In Theaters 4/20 Ok for kids 6+ Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels This animated family movie centers on a high-flying bachelor goose named Peng (voiced by Jim Gaffigan) who is injured in flight and finds himself saddled with two adorably hilarious and demanding ducklings (voiced by Zendaya and Lance Lim). On their long journey south, the scrappy threesome just might turn into a family. Directed by Christopher Jenkins, this movie also features the voice talent of Carl Reiner, Stephen Fry, Jennifer Grey, and Molly Shannon. The film follows one such researcher whose passion leads her to initiate a new technique inspired by a black bear program in rural New Hampshire. What starts as a cross-culture collaboration

becomes a life-changing journey for an American biologist who crosses an ocean to join her; a scientist from Inner Mongolia; and a very curious female cub named Qian Qian, born in captivity. Directed by David Douglas and Drew Fellman, this film is narrated by Kristen Bell. SGT. “Buddy Day is a fantastic opportunity to reward students in our after-school program for working so hard to improve their reading, math and English skills,” said Dawn Montecalvo, president of Guadalupe Center. “Creating hands-on learning experiences like these and developing stronger academic backgrounds for the children of Immokalee will ultimately help us accomplish our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education.” The Mentor/Mentee Beach Picnic for Immokalee High School juniors and seniors in the Tutor Corps program at Hideaway Beach Club included kayaking to Tigertail Beach, volleyball games, a cookout, and informal conversation. Tutor Corps is a college preparatory program that matches teenagers with mentors who offer advice about college, careers, and life in general. This year, 45 Tutor Corps students and 67 mentors participated in the picnic. “Tutor Corps mentors develop a strong bond with their mentees, and it’s important for students to build relationships with their mentors outside of formal settings,” said Montecalvo. “The support and encouragement that our mentors provide is outstanding. While a lifelong commitment isn’t necessary to become a Tutor Corps mentor, we know many of their relationships will last well into college and beyond.” For more information, visit www.guadalupecenter.org.

Free Classes Offered on Parenting Exceptional Children

olisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida is offering free parenting classes starting in April to help teach parents how to focus on their strengths, use effective discipline strategies, and set appropriate expectations for their children. The Lee Health Healthy Life Centers are hosting the eight-week workshops focused on parenting the exceptional child. Exceptional children have special needs, including developmental disabilities, special health care needs, or emotional disturbances. The workshops meet for eight Sundays starting April 8 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Healthy Life Center at the Wellness Center - Cape Coral, 609 S.E. 13th Court, Cape Coral. There also will be workshops held for eight Tuesdays beginning April 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the Healthy Life Center - Coconut Point, 23190 Fashion Dr., Suite 105, Estero. The Partners in Parenting workshops feature lessons focused on positive discipline from the Nurturing Parenting Program, authored by Stephen J. Bavolek, Ph.D. The workshops help parents: • manage their child’s behavior without spanking or shouting; • learn effective communication skills; • establish nurturing routines for meal times, bath times, bedtimes, chores and homework; • understand the exceptional child’s effect on typical siblings; • gain a sense of personal power and feel good about themselves; and • enjoy their families and have fun together. IHS Receives $20k to Help Athletic Department Hit Hard by Irma

he impact of Hurricane Irma is still being felt through Collier County. In the weeks following the hurricane, football games at Immokalee High School (IHS) were canceled due to the storm and damages. According to IHS Principal Clara Calderon, the football program funds 90% of the entire school’s athletic program. This was cause for concern for the remainder of the school year and beyond. That’s where the Dream Builders Foundation and United Healthcare came in. The organizations recently donated $20,000 to the IHS athletic program in a surprise presentation at the school. “With this help, we’re going to be able to fund a lot of our programs,” Calderon explained. She said the money is going to go toward more than 25 different areas of the program, including equipment, camps, uniforms, senior night events, awards, costs for officials and referees, and more. “Friday night, everyone is at Immokalee High School for the football games. This is a football community,” Calderon said. “This is a community that travels with the Immokalee Indians. When we played in Fort Lauderdale this year, everyone came with us across the

state. When there’s loss at football, there’s loss in other programs.” IHS was not able to play two of its biggest games of the year – Gulf Coast High School and Naples High School – due to the storm and the damage it inflicted. “I am very grateful that our community partners are looking out for Immokalee High School. We are so thankful,” Calderon said. New York Giants football player Dominique RodgersCromartie traveled to Immokalee for the presentation. “I knew the hurricane was going to be tough to overcome. Anytime I’m able to help, I do,” said Rodgers-Cromartie. “The spirit and energy here are so great. These kids have great spirit. I think they’re appreciative and they love their sports. They were cheering every time someone new came on stage.” Immokalee native and former NFL player Edgerrin James was in attendance as well. “Immokalee is built around athletics,” James explained. “Football is supporting a lot of what’s going on in other programs. Whenever everyone is here supporting athletics, other students achieve their dreams as well.”

Advice on Social Media, Camp Q: My kids are driving me insane. Lately, they are always acting so bad, and I’m constantly having to yell and punish everybody. All of my friends on Facebook are spending quality time with their kids, and everyone is enjoying themselves. What am I doing wrong? Amy: Eek. The only thing you’re doing wrong is believing that the persona people show you on Facebook is real. Yeah, I said it. Social media is outstanding for certain things, but trusting the images and fantastic lighting as fact are not one of them. I have one good picture of all of my sons together. To get that photograph it took seven million takes, a professional photographer, multiple bags of fruit snacks, and bribery. And I only attempt that crap once every 12 months. Okay, the professional photographer is embellishing a bit, it was my cousin, and she had a camera. If your kids are misbehaving, do what you need to do to correct their bad behavior and stop feeling sorry about it. Being a cop is the crappiest part about being a mom, but it has to happen sometimes. You are the ultimate decision maker when it comes to your child’s behavior. And if social media is making you feel worse about those deci-

sions, you might want to take a step back and unplug for a week. Q: It’s only April, and already everyone is talking about summer camps and programs. My oldest wants to go to sleepaway camp, but I’m on the fence about her being away from home by herself, and the cost is exorbitant. Any suggestions? A: Okay, I know April feels early, but camps are attempting to staff and plan, so this is the “Wheeee, get your act together for summer” part of every year. My oldest went to sleepaway camp for the first time when he was eleven. And while insanely expensive, sleepaway camp was a game

changer for my kid. He was able to make friends with people from across the world and all walks of life. He found he enjoyed hiking, camping, and color war, (things he never thought he’d enjoy before). He’ll be going back this summer as well, and he’s super excited. My younger kids go to day camp in town and also look forward to it all year. We ask a lot of our children with regimented school calendars, music lessons, and sports, so summer is a great time to unwind and chillax with their friends and counselors in a less structured setting. Ask around – find a program that works for your schedule as well as your kids’ interests and sign them up for camp. Understanding the Court System

t is widely known that the vast majority of divorces settle. That means the spouses enter a settlement agreement and thus avoid having to go to court to have a trial and subject themselves to the ruling of a judge. Anecdotally, we would say that about 80% of divorces, if not slightly more, resolve by settlement agreement rather than heading off to trial. Trial can be very expensive, and very risky, as the spouses are allowing their personal financial matters to be resolved by a judge. Additionally, even after a trial is over, one or both spouses may choose to exercise their right to appeal the case to the district court. Florida has a four-tiered judicial system. The county and circuit courts are the local courts that normally address trial situations. This is level that most people cogitate when they think of going to “trial.” At this level, the parties put on their evidence (testimony of witnesses along with documents or other physical exhibits) and set forth their legal argument to support their case. There is one judge hearing and ruling on the case. Family law cases are only permitted in circuit court and there are no juries. The next level is the district courts of appeal. In Florida, there are five districts courts, which address appeals of all types of law. The most noteworthy difference at the appellate level is the absence of presentation of new facts. The “facts” are set by the evidence presented to the trial court. There will be no new testimony and no new evidence presented to

the district court. Another major difference is that an appeal is heard by three sitting district judges, instead of just one. Every final judicial decision made by the circuit court is subject to appeal. That means, if one spouse is not satisfied with the result, they have the right to appeal the decision to the district courts. There are time limits, though, that are extremely important and cannot be missed. The procedure of an appeal requires both sides to file their “briefs,” which describe their legal authority to support their claims that the trial court was either wrong or right, depending on your side. After all briefs are filed, the lawyers head to court for a 40-minute oral argument, addressing all three judges to explain their client’s position and answer the judges’ questions. After this, the three judges enter a ruling through a published “opinion.” In most family law cases, the ruling of the district court is final. The fourth tier in the system is the Florida Supreme Court. In relation to family law cases, appeals to the

Florida Supreme Court are very limited to: a) resolving direct conflicts in opinions between the district courts and b) handling cases of substantial public importance. Such decisions are limited to a couple per year, so this level of appeal is not common in family law. The existence of these appellate rights should be considered when going to trial. There is potential cost to both parties of appeal, so this is something to consider when attempting to settle. Additionally, the potential for appeal must be considered by the trial lawyers to ensure they have presented the evidence to give their client the best chance on appeal, if the trial decision does not go their way. What to Donate, and Where

hether you are clearing out during spring cleaning or because you want to assist those who need a helping hand, donating goods is a wonderful way to give back to your community. But how can you make sure your donation has an impact and doesn’t just make one more stop before the dump? We asked three local organizations that accept donated goods what they want and don’t want. For all items, make sure that they are clean and in good condition so that they can be sold. But, please note that St. Matthew’s House accepts stained or ripped clothes, but most places do not. Whether the donated items are sold to fund the organization’s mission – Goodwill – or are given to those in need – The Shelter for Abused Women – or a combination of these two efforts – St. Matthew’s House – the items need to be able to be used by the people who receive them. What to donate Clothes in all sizes: children and baby clothes, adult clothes, pajamas, socks, and shoes. Make sure everything is clean and in good condition. Furniture: armoires, bedframes (no mattresses), end tables, and sofas. Most furniture is accepted, but call before you drop off larger items. New toiletries: conditioner, feminine products, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

Baby/child needs: car seats, cribs, diapers (The Shelter for Abused Women and Children specifically asks for sizes 5 and 6), formula, pacifiers, playpens, sippy cups, strollers, and toys. Appliances: irons, microwaves, ovens, refrigerators, stoves, and toasters. Miscellaneous: books, CAT bus tickets, cell phones, computers (working or nonworking), crutches, gas cards, lawnmowers, magazines, phone cards, and wheelchairs. Food: Unexpired and unopened canned items. Meat, fruits, and vegetables are requested canned, along with pantry staples like pasta and rice. High protein foods like beans and peanut butter are welcomed,

along with healthier versions of the foods listed above (for example, choose to donate whole-wheat pasta instead). Remember: try to donate food you would actually want to eat. While a large donation of mystery meat may be appreciated, a can of Chef Boyardee ravioli may mean the world to someone who otherwise cannot choose their favorite foods on their own. Many organizations, like the Shelter for Abused Women and Children, ask for baby formula, because it is very expensive and some mothers cannot nurse. Remember: your trash may be another person’s treasure. Try to donate items you no longer want or need before tossing them in the trash can.

Shadowlawn Students Growing in Garden

ow in its third year of existence, Shadowlawn Elementary School’s garden provides students and staff with an oasis of learning. A true team effort, the garden was born from the efforts of students, staff, and the local community. A vision of former principal Dr. Laurie Mearsheimer, the garden started to take root during the 2014-15 school year. Four teachers (Katie Schneider, Trish Mckenzie, Sophia O’Neill, and Dana Winogrodzki) led 60 students in the project, worked tirelessly to build 15 beds and fill them with soil, and disperse mulch between the beds. They also dug and laid a border around the perimeter of the 70 x 40 ft. garden. The garden was funded by donations from parents, staff, the PTO, Yahls, House of Carpets, Cemex and Greenway Landscape Supply, and the Avery Foundation. Naples Botanical Gardens provided a variety of seeds and starter plants. Students studied growing charts to determine which seeds should be planted during what time of year. They learned how to read the back of the seed packets to plant seeds at the proper depth and adequately space the seeds. They worked together when planting to make sure that the root ball was placed below the level of the soil and firmly packed into place. They carefully labeled the seeds and plants and then tended them carefully, pulling weeds and pruning them as needed. Today, when students are not working, learning, or relaxing in the garden, they learn about the nutrition behind the plants they are growing. They study vermiculture and its benefits to garden plants by creating a worm farm and making worm tea. The students also create books – detailing how they built the garden so future classes will know all the logistics, dedication, and work that went into creating the garden. At the either end of the gardens, there are picnic tables that enable teachers to teach a lesson outdoors. On early release days, teachers have the opportunity to bring their students to sit and each lunch in the garden. Students also get to enjoy the fruits of their labors, literally.

Some have made and consumed salads and smoothies made from kale, giant red mustard, Napa Japanese cabbage, radishes, carrots, and tomatoes. Shadowlawn also shares its harvest. Students and staff have taken home more than 20 pounds of vegetables. To date, Shadowlawn has donated 42 pounds of vegetables to St. Matthews House, which provides meals and shelter for community members who are in need.

atalie Ashby is a deputy sheriff corporal at the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, working within the North Naples District Community Oriented Policing Unit. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Belmont Abbey College, her master’s in forensic science from Florida Gulf Coast University, and is pursuing a doctorate in philosophy in industrial and organizational psychology. She has received a number of awards for her work, including Deputy of the Quarter Award; the Medal of Valor, which is the highest decoration for bravery exhibited by public safety officers; and the Distinguished Public Service Award for Law Enforcement. What made you decide to become a deputy? As a young child I was always intrigued by police officers. I felt that they possessed a great deal of strength and bravery; combined with the genuine desire to not only protect, but to help other people. What do you love about your job? I enjoy the diversity in my day-to-day experi22

ences. I am utilizing different skills, from more technical policing to drawing upon human and community interaction skills while working with colleagues and people in our community. What is a typical week night like for your family? I think it mirrors that of many busy young families. To maximize the time we spend together, we walk or run for physical activity, we make art work, I help with homework, and we read books. Then we close out the evening with dinner and bedtime rituals, before collapsing into bed. Do you have any favorite local spots you go to with your family? We prefer interactive activities that can be experienced again and again. The Naples Zoo and the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples and are among our favorite local places. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve received? The best parenting advice I’ve received remains that “character is not simply something that you teach your children, but rather something that

you demonstrate for them each and every day.” If you want to have a child who is inquisitive and kind, be the type of adult role model they can emulate. What’s the best and worst part about your daughter’s current age? My daughter is four and that is such an amazing age. I love everything about it. She is learning so much and asks so many questions! She is so smart and it amazes me every day how quickly her mind is developing. The worst part about her being four is that she is growing so quickly. I wish I could slow down time. What’s your proudest moment as a mother? I have so many proud moments as a mother. My daughter’s kindness and loving attitude toward everyone is so amazing. What are your hopes and goals for 2018? I look forward to 2018 being a year in which I step up to challenges and log achievements in all facets of my life; as a loving and present mother, daughter, sister and friend, and also as a dedicated employee. Is Overnight Camp Right for Your Kids?

ummer break is just around the corner – do you have plans for your children yet? With camps that focus on the arts, academics, sports, and more, trying to choose the right one for your child can be confusing. Throw in the question of day camp versus overnight camp and it quickly becomes overwhelming. As you contemplate your family and individual kid’s needs, consider the benefits of overnight camp. Several local families have shared their overnight camp experiences with us, and the parents all agree that overnight camp has fostered confidence and independence in their children. We’ve also included profiles of two overnight camps for kids with special needs, so they don’t have to miss out on any of the fun. How do you know? The big question for most families comes down to this: How do you know if your child is ready for an overnight camp 24

adventure? There’s no easy answer, and it differs from family to family. Leigh Ann Newman (Neapolitan Family co-publisher) decided to keep the first overnight camp experience for her daughter Rachel close to home. “Rachel went to volleyball camp at FGCU when she was 11 years old,” Newman said. “It was a two-night camp, so it was a good way to ease her into the experience.” Rachel continued her overnight camp experience by attending Irish dance camp in upstate New York last summer. “That was harder for me because her dad and stepmom took her there, so I didn’t get to see where she was staying or help her settle in,” Newman explained. “There also was a strict no-cell phone policy at camp. That was difficult for both of us because she couldn’t check in with me at night. But I think it made her a stronger person because she had to deal with some difficult issues by herself.” Newman noted that the main drawback

to overnight camp was missing out on time in the summer with her daughter. “And the expense,” she added. “Overnight camp is obviously more expensive than day camp.” “I don’t think overnight camp is a right fit for every kid. But it can be a great learning experience, as it gives kids independence that they don’t have at home, and forces them to figure things out themselves. Specialty camps also give kids a chance to focus on their passion, and be surrounded by other kids who love to do what they love to do.” The Chahwan family The three Chahwan children go to a three-week overnight camp in North Carolina every summer.“We chose to send them to overnight camp so they can have a different kind of summer than being here in Naples,” said Gabriela Chahwan. “The scenery and different activities offered at camp are very interesting, and being without a family NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2018

member teaches them to rely on themselves. The experience empowers them and helps them develop confidence.” Mateo (14) and Martina (13) started camp in the summer of 2014, with Mateo attending Camp Highlander (co-ed) and Martina at Camp Illahee (all girls). Marcos (11) followed Mateo to Camp Highlander a year later. There were some challenges the first year, according to Chahwan. “For our children (and for us), the biggest challenge was being away from home for that long without being able to talk to either their dad or me. We could send them emails every day, but they could only write letters to us and send them by mail. I was very nervous about being so far away from them. But, our children had a great experience. I remember the day I picked up my son from camp – he gave me a big hug and asked me right away if he could come back the following year. That’s when I felt we had made the right decision to send them to overnight camp.” And it’s been a positive experience for the Chahwan family ever since. “Every year they go to camp, they mature a little more,” Chahwan said. “I am the type of mom that does everything for them when they are home, so going to camp definitely helps them learn responsibility and independence. For my daughter, Martina, going to an all girls’ camp is great! She has two brothers at home, and its good for her to be surrounded by female friends.” The Browner family Alicia Browner began sending her two boys to Camp Blue Star in North Carolina when they were 9 and 10 years old because she wanted a camp with longer hours and more engaging experiences. While the cost

Browner’s sons are second-generation campers at Camp Blue Star. “I wanted my boys to experience new things by living as a part of a community with kids from all over the world,” Browner explained. “They’re in the mountains and have the opportunity to learn about themselves in a safe environment, but with new freedoms.” Browner noted that her sons were noticeably changed after each summer at camp. “The kids came back from North Carolina full of stories of mountain adventures, camp outs, white water rafting, mountain biking, exploring the woods, and new friends. They have made both simple and

complex choices for themselves and they have started learning about who they want to be as independent young men. In short, a few weeks in camp each year has given them an opportunity to explore who they are, and who they want to be.” That’s not to say that camp is all campfires and s’mores. Browner’s younger son broke his arm two days before the end of camp one summer. “It was devastating being so far away when he was hurt,” Browner said, “but this was old hat to the camp and doctors in the area. They kept in constant contact with me throughout the ordeal. lander from Stacy Nicolau (Neapolitan Family co-publisher). Her kids attended camp there for the first time in 2014. When they arrived to visit the camp in 2013, “my daughter said she would never go to overnight camp,” Kuhl said. “We explained to her that we were visiting the camp for her older brother. By the time we left the camp, our daughter said she was going to camp, too!” Kuhl cited her childhood experiences as one of the reasons she sends her children to overnight camp: “I had the opportunity to go to sleepaway camp as a child and loved it. I wanted the kids to be able to make memories of their own. Camp allows kids to be kids, playing outside in a safe environment without electronic devices. They are active all day long – they don’t have time to be bored.” While Kuhl was nervous sending her kids to camp the first time, she “knew they were in great hands. We met with the owner of the camp and knew the rigorous screening process they had in place for hiring counselors. The counselors also called home a few days into the three-week session to let us know how the kids were doing, which definitely put our minds at ease. The camp also posted pictures on their website twice a day. We got to see how much fun our kids were having!” For kids with special needs For families with children who have special needs, many options exist for overnight camp experiences. We have profiled two below, including one in Florida and one in Ohio. Easter Seals Camp Challenge, a 61-acre camp located in Sorrento, Florida, provides both overnight summer camp and weekend camps throughout the year. The staff is highly trained to meet the needs of a variety of campers at Camp Challenge. “All of our staff members receive training in not only camping programs and skills, but in the special needs of our campers,” said Maggie Denk, director of Camp Challenge. Training addresses behavioral and physical disabilities, as well as issues unique to each camper, such as dietary restrictions, 26

medication management, and communication skills. Denk said the key to Camp Challenge’s success is the low ratio of campers to counselors. “In our overnight camp there is one counselor for every three campers. As camp serves both children and adults, we have watched many of our campers return to Camp Challenge for many summers and gain independence, form lifelong friendships, and have experiences that would otherwise be unavailable to them.” One family has been attending Camp Challenge for 15 years! Mom Diane loves the experiences Camp Challenge has given Meghan (26), Molly (22), and Maddie (21). “They’ve been able to have fun, try new activities, and make lifelong friends,” Diane said. “They can grow in a loving environment. It gives my husband and me time to regroup and some much-needed rest. Our girls are well taken care of at camp, which allows us to just enjoy some free time.” Amp Camp Paddy Rossbach Youth Camp in Ohio offers six-day programs for children ages 10-17 with limb loss and limb difference. “The focus is on the campers,” said Tonya Osborne-Simpson, director of peer support programs for the Amputee Coalition. “We plan and train in preparation. But most importantly, we take the time to select an exceptional group of camp counselors. Many of them are former campers or have served as one of our counselors in past years, and all of them are living with limb loss or limb difference.” Campers grow and develop in new ways, according to Osborne-Simpson. “This past year, one of our campers had been used to having a parent available for most activities of daily life, including bathing. At camp, the counselors quickly helped this camper learn to bathe independently. This has the obvious benefit of a new skill, but it also adds to self-confidence and problem-solving abilities, too.” Campers experience this type of increased confidence as they make friends with others who have similar challenges. “Every year, campers tell us how amazing it is to feel normal, and that ‘Amp Camp’ self-esteem boosts last throughout the year, as do the friendships they make,” said Osborne-Simpson. amp is the one gift that I cannot afford to not give my children. Camp is their escape from our hectic schedule and the pressures of school, sports, and social media demands. It is the best excuse to take away the electronics I bought them, and allow them to connect with people, nature, and the world around them. Camp is how I show my children love, because what camp gives them in just a few weeks takes us, as parents, months to provide. • Three Square Meals with Cabin Mates. Sitting around the table three times a day is something I only dream of doing with my kids. The conversations shared, the laughs exchanged, and the memories made around a table are priceless. Without phones, social media, or documenting the meal for the world to see, these meals just have to be experienced. • Exciting Activities. Where else can you zip line through the trees, shoot a rifle, ride a horse, and swim at the base of a waterfall all in one day? We live here all year and my kids still only have these adventures at camp. Where else can you hike to the top of a summit to witness breathtaking views, without the urge to Snapchat the unforgettable moment? • Traveling Everywhere on Foot. Camp is a little like Andy Griffith’s Mayberry; everyone knows everyone and there are great conversations to be had as you pass your neighbor when you travel through your day. If trees could talk, oh the stories they would tell of the laughter, joy, and inside jokes that echo beneath their lofty branches. No need for cars, cell phones, or texting. Anyone

you need is just a few steps away. • Connecting with Nature. The physical benefits of being outside are obvious, but children are happier and healthier when they experience the outdoors. Free play in natural areas enhances children’s cognitive flexibility, problem-solving ability, creativity, self-esteem, and self-discipline. • Rainy Day Boredom. Technology has provided a quick-fix for boredom, but without technology at camp, our campers learn to problem solve, get creative, and use their imaginations. When a rainy day cancels their activity period, they find new ways to smile, laugh and play – without looking for a solution on the Internet. • Family. Living in a cabin unit, campers feel part of a close-knit community that accepts them and loves them just they way they are. The cabin unit – your family at camp – nurtures the innate need in every one of us to belong and be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Separation makes the heart grow... After weeks away from home, my kids always come back a little bit wiser, braver, and taller than when they left. At camp, they’ve had the opportunity to interact with positive role models who have taken time to listen, talk, relax, reflect, and think through daily life with them. My kids have learned to work selflessly within a group, to responsibly make their own choices, to discover, grow, fail, succeed, mature, and gain independence. The life skills they take away from camp are necessary tools on their path to healthy, productive lives.

New this summer are non-LEGO STEM camps for kids ages 13+, and revamped LEGO camps for younger children. Weekly camps, June 4-Aug. 3. KidsTek Learning offers a fun filled series of after-school enrichment programs as well as LEGO and Minecraft camps. Designed and developed by the founder John Van Gilder, an integrated circuit design engineer with more than 25 years experience, all KidsTek programs are focused on teaching and inspiring a future generation of innovators in science and engineering. Whether it’s playing with LEGO models of their own design or building LEGO models designed by KidsTek, kids will have a great time in one of the LEGO camps while learning about space exploration, architecture, car design, amusement park design, and create/build models from Star Wars. In the Minecraft camps, kids learn how redstone and command blocks work.
