Hopefully, by now, your family has settled into the school year and your mornings are running smoothly. If you didn’t sign up for extra-curricular activities at our Back to School Expo in August, there is still time to discover your child’s interests. This month, we bring you our annual Arts issue, to help you fill your child’s schedule with music, theater, art, or dance lessons. Did your child see a KidzAct musical this summer and is now itching to get on the stage? Becca Barton tells us on page 20 all of the benefits she gained by participating in theater from a young age. Does your child love to sing? Christina Katz gives us 70 reasons on page 38 why singing is good for your heart and soul, even if you can’t carry a tune. And, if your child prefers to be in the audience, she also gives us a great list of family-friendly musicals to enjoy either live or on the screen, without paying big ticket prices. Lessons in arts education also can get pricey, especially when you have more than one talented child. On page 18, Ana Snyder spotlights several area organizations that can help you foot the bill. By now, children in Collier County Public Schools will have brought home the CCPS Activities Guide, published by Neapolitan Family and designed to be an all-inclusive directory of extracurricular activities and community resources for your family. Other families can pick up a free copy at their closest Collier County Public Library. While you are there, you can help the library celebrate its 85th anniversary, by participating in one of the many festivities they have planned in September. The public library also is a great resource if you are having difficulty explaining to your children about recent events in the news that involve hate speech and crimes. On page 22, we have a list of suggested books about diversity for every age level, along with a message of peace from Rabbi Adam Miller of Naples. Peace and Love,

She agrees to let the guys stay in her guest house temporarily, but the arrangement ends up unfolding in unexpected ways. The epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their true power. Olivia Munn, Fred Armisen, and Michael

Rated PG • Ok for kids 7+ In Theaters September 1 Reel Preview: 5 of 5 Reels No, you haven’t time-traveled back to 1977, but you might feel like it when you see “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” again. The iconic movie is returning to theaters to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Here’s your chance to see it with your kids on the big screen. You know the story: After an encounter with a UFO, a line worker (Richard Dreyfuss) feels undeniably drawn to an isolated area in the wilderness where something spectacular is about to happen. BATTLE OF THE SEXES

This historical movie tells the extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s (Judi Dench) rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. Directed by Stephen Frears, this sweet movie also stars Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, and Ruth McCabe.

Rated PG-13 for some sexual content and partial nudity. • Ok for kids 13+ In Theaters September 22 Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels The electrifying 1973 tennis match between tennis star Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the “Battle of the Sexes” and became the most watched televised sports event of all time. The match caught the zeitgeist and sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but offcourt each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, this movie also stars Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming, and Bill Pullman.

VICTORIA AND ABDUL Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and language. Ok for kids 13+ In Theaters September 22 Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels

Manatee Schools Staff Get to Know Students, Families With Habitat Visit

D

espite it being 90 degrees outside, there was excitement in the air as teachers from Manatee Elementary School (MES) and Manatee Middle School (MMS) loaded up on school buses. Armed with coolers filled with multi-colored ice pops, the combined staff was nothing but smiles as they began their celebratory back-toschool tour. In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, the tour celebrated student success while giving teachers an inside look at the community surrounding the school. “We’re very excited that both of our schools moved up in grades,” said MMS Principal Pamela Vickaryous. “Our kids are awesome, our schools are awesome, our parents are wonderful, and we just

want to show the community how much we love them.” Staff traveled to four Habitat for Humanity neighborhoods near the schools. Students were told to meet at the playgrounds in each development. Staff members distributed ice pops to the children and joined them in games of basketball. Many students were accompanied by parents, siblings, and other family members. “This is great because families get to see us, get to know all of us, [and] get to know that we truly care about these kids,” commented Nancy Caliendo, a teacher at MMS. Fellow MMS teacher Joseph Oneto said the event goes beyond students, and it’s about the community as a whole.

“You have teachers, administration, students, and family members coming together around neighborhoods. We’re here to support neighborhoods. That’s what the school does,” Oneto said. “It’s important for our staff to get out into the community and see where our students live and to get a perspective that we wouldn’t normally have received had we just looked at a piece of paper,” Vickaryous explained. “This makes it three dimensional.” Vickaryous added that the event is especially important for new staff members who may not have known the Habitat community existed and the partnership the schools have with the community. Congratulations to both schools on their “B” grades!

Happy kids. Sparkly smiles.

Back-to-School Safety Tips

T

he Collier County Sheriff’s Office is reminding students and their families of a few key areas of safety as we enter the new school year. Don’t assume your child knows what to do in these situations. Keep these tips in mind as you teach your children the ropes. Walking to and from school • Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop. Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossings and, if possible, with intersections that have crossing guards. • Walk the route with your child before school starts. Tell him to stay away from parks, vacant lots, fields, and other places where there aren’t many people around. • Teach your child to cross at designated crosswalks at intersections. • Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard. Never cross the street against a light, even if traffic is not visible. • Wear reflective material; it makes you more visible to street traffic. • Be sure your child walks to and from school with a sibling, friend, or neighbor. • Teach your child never to talk to, accept rides from, or take gifts from strangers. • Tell your child that if anyone follows her on foot to get away as quickly as possible. If anyone follows her in a vehicle, she should turn around, go in the opposite direction, and try to quickly get to a spot where a trusted adult may help. Advise your child to be sure to tell you or another

Riding Lessons

followed or bothered by a stranger. The safe places can be used if your child needs help. • Teach your child what to do if the bus does not arrive on time. • Teach your child to stay with a group while waiting at the bus stop. • Explain to your child that an adult should not approach children for help or directions, but instead ask another adult.

trusted adult what happened. • Teach your child that if a stranger tries to take him away, he should quickly get away and yell, “This person is trying to take me away!” or “This person is not my father/mother/guardian!” • Teach your child that if a stranger tries to grab her, she must make a scene and make every effort to get away by kicking, punching, screaming, and resisting. Safety around the school bus • Make sure your child knows his bus number. This will reduce your child’s stress and avoid confusion on which bus to ride. • Make sure your child knows her telephone number and address. • Visit the bus stop with your children before the first day of school. • Walk the route to and from the bus stop with your child, pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if he is being

Bicycle safety • If your child rides a bike to school, instruct her to always travel with a friend. • Ride in well-lit areas and never take shortcuts. • Always wear a helmet while riding. Helmets should fit properly and the straps should always be fastened. • Wear bright-colored clothes and place reflectors on the bicycles. • Avoid wearing headphones because music can be distracting and cause children not to notice potential hazards around them. • Teach your child that he is subject to the rules of traffic signs and signals, just as motorists. He should be alert to traffic signs and know what they mean. It’s never too late to go over these tips with your children. As always, report any suspicious activity at the bus stop or during your child’s travels to school by calling our non-emergency line at 239252-9300. To report an emergency, as always, dial 911.

NEW TO NAPLES

I

By Cara Morgan

Making Naples Home

will never forget the rush of emotions that flooded over me the day we finally heard our relocation was to Naples, Florida. I was excited and nervous but, most of all, relieved that the agony of waiting was over. We threw ourselves into packing mode as the moving date quickly approached. Going through a house full of memories and boxing up the years spent in our first home was certainly not a task for the faint of heart. Illinois was home. It was all our family knew and it was where we thought we would always be, until an opportunity came along that altered the steady course we set ourselves upon. We mulled over the idea of moving for months and we kept coming back to this simple question, “Why not?” After all, we were still young, our kids could easily adjust to a new school, and the weather enticed us (just a bit). We waited until the last possible day to give my husband’s company our decision and didn’t look back. As the moving truck pulled away from our new house, we unpacked the sea of boxes that held our cherished Midwestern life and began to make Naples our home. The dictionary defines the word “make” as this: to form something by putting parts together, to construct or to create. When you move to a new place you have two options. The first option is to keep your old home, life, and memories in the forefront of your mind, never fully intending to allow your yourself to create a new life. The second option is to immerse yourself in your new surroundings, making every effort to experience all your community has to offer. We chose the latter because creating a life in Naples seemed like more fun than tirelessly reminiscing on the one we left behind. I can’t speak for all cities or cross-country moves, but making the transition to Naples was a fairly easy one. With beautiful beaches, lush green golf courses, and countless activities, there was something in Naples for everyone in our family. Change is never easy. I would be lying if I said our move didn’t come with its fair share of ups and downs, but our relocation to Naples has been an adventure and it has changed our family for the better because we allowed it to. Using these simple tips will help you make Naples your home, too.

Get plugged in: After we unpacked, the first thing I did was search for places to get involved. We joined a church, the school PTO, and signed the kids up for sports. I met some amazing people through my efforts, most of whom had once been a transplant like myself. Get outside: You don’t have to be outside all the time. After all, if the Florida sun won’t get you, the mosquitos will. What I really mean by “get outside” is simply experience all that Naples has to offer. One-of-a-kind restaurants, the Naples Zoo, multiple libraries with a slew of activities, playgrounds, etc. Neapolitan Family is packed with places to go and events in our area, so get out there and see for yourself why so many families love living in Naples. Let it go: (I couldn’t resist) I can recall our first autumn here in Naples. It was a hot and humid day in OCTOBER! I was picking out pumpkins from a side-of-the-road pumpkin patch, dripping sweat, all for the sake of the perfect pumpkin to carve. For a moment, I was disappointed. Back in the Midwest we strolled through acres of pumpkins to choose from with hot apple cider and doughnuts. While I was sulking about my less-than-perfect pumpkin experience, our three kids were having a blast. They were posing next to painted scarecrows and riding the mini tractor on display. I was gently reminded to let go of my expectations of what life was like in Illinois and chose to make our new life and memories right where we were. Open your home: As soon as friends and family catch wind that you live in the Sunshine State, be prepared for a plethora of visitors. I love inviting people to stay with us because it allows them to experience first hand why we made our decision to relocate. They can’t help but to get swept up by the ocean waves or enamored with the glowing lights of Fifth Avenue. We have a made it a tradition to take each guest to the Naples Pier, Tin City, and the All American Shake Shop. What will your traditions be? Guest contributor CARA MORGAN, her husband (who manages the Naples Aldi), and their three children are proud Illinois transplants who are now ocean- and Disney-obsessed.

FAMILY LAW

By Dale Klaus and Reuben Doupé

Enforcement of Court Ordered Obligations

Y

ou have an order for the payment of support, now what? The goal is for everyone to meet their court ordered support obligations, and most parents and former spouses comply. However, there are always those that have not paid and will not pay, for many possible reasons. The court’s ability to enforce support obligations is vital to ensuring spouses and children receive the support they need and deserve. The necessary elements for a support case are straightforward. There must be: (1) a court order for the payment of support, and (2) a default in the payment of that support by the payor. If nothing else, proof of these two elements will entitle the support recipient to a money judgment for the amount in arrears. To get further sanctions, however, the recipient must also prove a third element: that the defaulting party had the “ability to pay” the support but willingly failed to do so. Proof of this third element will allow the court to enter the more severe contempt sanctions, discussed below, which are designed to assist the court in compelling the defaulting party to pay that which he or she rightfully owes. Ability to pay is a potentially complicated subject that would require more time and words than can be allotted during this column, but essentially, it must be proven that the defaulting party could have paid but chose not to pay the support. The good news for the recipient is that the law presumes that the payor has the “ability to pay” if the support is previously court ordered. Thus, for

the third element, it is really the defaulting party’s burden to prove that he or she cannot afford the support. Typically, this requires proof of a pretty bleak financial picture. If you can meet the three primary elements, then you may be entitled to contempt sanctions in addition to a money judgment for the arrears. The most severe sanction is ordering that the defaulting party be taken into custody and jailed until they pay a purge (usually a specific amount of money up to the total arrears). For this relief, it must be clearly proven that the defaulting party has the ability to pay the purge amount. The best evidence of this is money in the bank, but other proof may suffice. In other words, to put the person in jail, the court must find that they have the “keys to the jail cell” in the sense that the defaulting party has the ability to pay a purge amount which will allow them to get out as soon as they choose to make the payment. Other contempt sanctions include the implementation of an income withholding order to garnish pay to apply to future support payments, a monetary fine, suspension

of a driver’s license or other business license, and or recovery of attorney’s fees. Also, other traditional money judgment collection efforts are available, but those often are not helpful. You can seek court enforcement on support obligations by filing a Motion for Contempt and Enforcement by yourself or through you attorney. If qualified, a support recipient may use the State Department of Revenue to assist in prosecuting support enforcement. The key is not to sit back and get disheartened by non-payment. Enforcing support may feel like a dead-end, but the judicial system wants support to be paid, and the system wants to see court orders followed. If you are not getting the support that is ordered to be paid to you, please consult an attorney to get educated on your rights.

THE ARTS

By Anna Snyder

Finding the Funds to Fuel Your Child’s Passion for the Arts

P

aying for music, dance, or art lessons for your children can be difficult or even impossible for many families. Fortunately, there are many organizations in Naples that will help foot the bill. You might be surprised at just how much money is available through both need- and meritbased scholarships.

The Southwest Florida Symphony Amy Ginsberg, executive director at the Southwest Florida Symphony, recognizes the financial pressure parents are under to provide their budding musicians with opportunities to advance their skills. “As the cost of college, summer programs, lessons, and even instruments have risen rapidly, students are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with costs associated with pursuing music education,” she explained. “In many cases, scholarships provide the only music education opportunity for local students as arts programs continue to disappear from schools,” Ginsberg said. “Our scholarship programs help deserving music students enhance their music education experience.” To apply for a scholarship (of up to $2,000), students submit an application and a recording of a selection (vocal or instrumental), and finalists are selected to perform before a panel of judges. “While not all of our scholarship win-

ners go on to pursue music as a career, it has provided each one of them with a greatly enhanced, well-rounded overall education. Those who have pursued careers in music have gone on to win other prestigious competitions and even perform with professional orchestras.” Naples Music Club The Naples Music Club (NMC) provides a variety of financial- and merit-based awards and scholarships, and has presented more than $650,000 to students in Southwest Florida since 1965. That figure includes more than $42,000 at its 2017 annual scholarship competition, which is open to middle and high school students in Collier, Bonita Springs, and Estero. “Scholarship winners use their awards for private lessons, instruments, music camps, and college expenses,” explained Linda Noel, NMC president. “Plan to attend our Scholarship Winners Recital in April 2018. You will be amazed at the talent of these young, hardworking student musicians,” she added. One such talented student is Melissa Leone. She won first place in the senior flute category in 2017, as well as the Turiel Award, NMC’s top honor. Melissa has been playing the flute since fourth grade, and in ensembles since sixth grade, including school bands, All-State Bands, and chamber ensembles. “I’ve played

in the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for the past three years, and this was a very important part of my life. I have formed wonderful friendships through music, and some of my fondest high school memories are from rehearsals, concerts, and summer festivals. The camaraderie that accompanies a common desire to create music is like no other that I have experienced,” she said. “Participating in their scholarship program is an excellent way for young musicians like myself to gain experience we might not get elsewhere.” Luciano Marsalli is another of NMC’s 2017 scholarship recipients. He is a vocalist and plays the violin: he used the $1,500 he received for capturing first place in the senior vocal category to attend a summer violin institute at Northwestern University. “At a young age, my parents had to keep me on task with both disciplines, but eventually I became self-motivated. The thing I love most about music is the great degree of beauty it holds,” Luciano said. Naples Concert Band Naples Concert Band (NCB) also supports music students through scholarship opportunities, and has presented more than $100,000 in awards. “We are trying to encourage young musicians by having them play with the adults in our band,” said NCB Conductor Harris Lanzel. “We

hope our scholarship program will make it easier for them to take lessons, attend music camps, or purchase an instrument.” To qualify for scholarships, students audition for the NCB. If accepted, the students must play at least four concerts and participate in related rehearsals to be considered for a scholarship, Lanzel said. Dance Arts by Maria Maria Ellis, owner of Dance Arts by Maria, started providing scholarships during a downturn in the economy. “We decided to offer need-based scholarships over 10 years ago when the economy turned, and dancers had to cut back on lessons. When it came down to someone not continuing to dance because they couldn’t afford it or a student not trying something they might love because of cost, we decided to find a way to help

families in need. A child should never have to give up the opportunity to pursue their passion because of their financial situation.” In Ellis’ experience, students seize the opportunity to pursue their passion. “Our need-based dancers will work hard for the chances they are given, and they are appreciative of the opportunity. Scholarship students can help offset the cost of their scholarship by volunteering at studio events and helping with the younger students.” Ellis is always encouraged by her students’ drive to succeed. “Some of the strongest dancers who have graduated from our studio and are pursuing careers in the arts were scholarship students.” Naples Art Association The Naples Art Association, located in the heart of downtown Naples, is dedicated to providing access to everyone through need-based scholarships for their programs. “The Naples Art Association provides tuition assistance to help families send their aspiring artists to our youth education classes,” said Laurel Meny, a spokesperson for NAA. “In the 2016-2017 season, the Naples Art Association awarded over $6,000 worth of tuition assistance to needy families.” Schol-

arships are awarded based upon need and cover from 10% to 80% of program costs. One Naples mother of six had wanted her children to take classes at NAA, but was deterred by the cost – until she discovered that NAA offers scholarships. “We heard about the wonderful art classes for homeschoolers at Naples Art Association, but we did not apply the first few sessions, as they were beyond our budget,” she said. “We were extremely grateful to receive tuition assistance. My daughters experienced the techniques and [learned the] history of art at the Naples Art Association. My children bring home beautiful art they created and talk about various artists. They so enjoy being instructed in person by an experienced art teacher, having access to quality art materials, and working with the other students.”

THE ARTS

I

By Rebecca Barton

Theater is Helping Kids Become Better Versions of Themselves

began acting when I was five years old. I played the dragonfly in a production of Froggy Day in Lindentown with KidzAct. From there, I was hooked, and I did KidzAct every summer. Eventually, I starred as Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jr. in fifth grade when my elementary school performed at the Naples Philharmonic (now Artis-Naples). I performed in the

first Youth Outreach Summer Program with Opera Naples and have continued every summer since. I performed in Children for the Arts Foundation productions through middle school, eventually continuing my involvement by directing the shows in high school. I’ve been an audience member watching the amazing theater that is produced in Naples. I am now pursuing a degree in theater

at Florida State University (go ‘Noles!). All of these experiences have led me to become a better version of myself. And I have seen these same transformations in the students I have directed. Becoming involved in theater and performing at a young age can help your children learn many important skills. Continued on page 22

Why Theater? “Theater gives children the opportunity to not only showcase their talent, but to be involved in the arts. It develops their creativity, imagination, expression, as well as promotes confidence, and self-esteem, along with lifelong skills of critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork.” – Tish Poorman, executive director, Children for the Arts Foundation (www.facebook. com/ChildrenForTheArts) “Being involved in the arts has a lasting impact on your life, especially for those who start at an early age. I have seen major transformations

occur in students through their involvement in the arts. I have watched many shy children blossom into confident performers, which then helps them become self-assured individuals in their every day life. Especially for teenagers, it is incredibly important to find a place of belonging – a place where they feel comfortable being themselves and a place where they have meaningful and positive friendships. Often, the stage or the rehearsal room becomes that place of joy and comfort. It provides them with a niche, which keeps them away from many alternative activities that can be negative and destructive. Instructors become positive role models who challenge and support them to be responsible young adults who express themselves in a healthy manner and respect others.” – Robin Frank, director of educational outreach, Opera Naples (operanaples.org)

“Theater makes us world citizens. It allows us to connect and engage with each other, to more deeply understand relationships, and to develop the vocabulary to articulate our feelings. We become better problem solvers and more compassionate human beings, able to develop empathy, to see different points of view, and to speak in front of a group. Academically, we learn how to understand and analyze language, how to write in different voices, and how to identify motif, subtext, and poetic forms. We also learn about different historical periods, cultures, and regions. Finally, theater gives us a safe space to address complex emotions, explore social issues, and make positive life choices.” – Hester Kamin, director of education, Gulfshore Playhouse (gulfshoreplayhouse. org) “Our theater classes all focus on building confidence. The performing arts is an important way to work on team-building skills, Cooperation, working towards a goal and accomplishing that goal as a team. Our performing arts programs focus on building personal confidence. Plus, if you need help speaking in front of people and thinking on your feet improv classes are for you. KidzAct, it’s a great way to learn new skills and make new friends!” – Craig Price, director of education, KidzAct (naplesplayers.org)

Confidence Many kids struggle with self-confidence as they grow up. Theater is an excellent way to combat this tendency in your kids. As they work toward goals through rehearsals and performances, they are able to see that they can accomplish anything they put their mind toward, even if it’s out of their comfort zone. The standing ovation at the end of a show is a visual affirmation of the pride they feel. Providing an outlet On the other end of the spectrum, some young kids have so much personality that it can be hard for a parent to handle. Theater is a fantastic way to channel that energy into something productive and positive. Kids learn to focus their natural vivacity into the high-paced environment of a performance. 22

neafamily.com

Self-expression As students enter the tween years, they often begin to experience moodiness and are reluctant to share problems with parents. It is incredibly hard to get through to children once they have shut down, and it is difficult to try and introduce strategies of self-expression once they are already in this stage. Parental suggestions are scorned and the gap becomes increasingly difficult to bridge. If kids already have a safe space where they can vent these new emotions in a positive manner, it can help them deal with the mountains (or are they molehills?) that arise with growing up. Teamwork For kids who aren’t athletically inclined (like me), it can be difficult to learn teamwork as easily as those playing team sports. Theater allows children to be part of a group and work together to reach a common goal. Learning to be responsible

for parts of a greater whole is integral to the art of theater. Public speaking In college, the one class all of my friends dreaded was public speaking. They had never learned how to speak clearly, to mitigate filler words such as “um” and “like,” or to project their voices. Because I started theater at a young age, all of this is second nature to me. I had the skills to be successful while my friends struggled. I have watched the kids I worked with learn to articulate their words and to clearly communicate their thoughts. Even though a lot of theater is memorizing someone else’s words, at its core, theater allows kids to learn how to tell a story so an audience understands it. This skill is integral to almost every job there is, from law to teaching to politics. Audiences come in sizes big and small, and with a background in acting, your child will be set up for success. DIVERSITY

By Rabbi Adam Miller

Discussing Diversity at Every Age

A

Jewish text on parenting declares that parents are obligated to teach their children moral values, a trade, and how to swim. The first two parts we expect – instructing our children to be good people and how to make a living. But, swimming?!? As parents in Florida we know that swimming pools, lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico are both a blessing and a curse. As cool and inviting as the water appears, a child without the proper skills is at risk of serious harm or even death. It is every parents’ worst nightmare. Consequently, we teach our children at an early age to swim – for their safety and our peace of mind. Teaching a child to swim also serves as a larger metaphor for keeping kids safe. Parents are expected to prepare their children for potentially dangerous situations that appear safe on the surface, yet may carry hidden risks. It’s the logic behind why we instruct children to avoid talking with strangers, to be careful using the internet, and to always look both ways before crossing the street. Yet, there are some critical topics that parents hesitate to broach with children. This is particularly true when shocking events, like the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, shake our foundation. Just as one would not allow a young child without swimming skills into a pool alone, we should not leave our children to wade into the deeper of pools of life without our guidance. It is up to parents to provide the necessary education and moral guidance that children need.

Here are several books available at Collier County Public Library that will help you begin a conversation with your children about diversity. Picture Books One Love Adapted by Cecilia Marley In this illustrated version of Bob Marley's song, a young girl enlists her friends, family, and community to transform their neighborhood for the better. Strictly No Elephants Lisa Mantchev A boy is excluded from joining his friends’ pet club because of his unusual pet. Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down Andrea Davis Pinkey This picture book is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the momentous Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in, when four college students staged a peaceful protest. NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2017

Kids should hear from a parent that there are indeed people who act out of hate, but that there are many more who act out of love. One place to start the conversation is with the sage advice of Fred Rogers (yes, Mr. Rogers). Mr. Rogers shared with his audience that during his youth, whenever he witnessed scary stories in the news, his mother would say, “Look for the helpers.” Talk with children about finding those individuals demonstrating courage in the face of injustice, helping those who have been wounded in tragic events, or responding to hate with love. Children are watching us, looking to adults, especially parents, to learn how to model their own behavior. With that in mind, we need to actively tread water ourselves – speaking out when we see someone treated unjustly, and standing up against currents of racism, bigotry, sexism, and anti-Semitism. There are times when we may need to accept that one cannot reason with someone who is filled with anger and venom. But we can always perform a positive act in response to hate. Parents are not expected to have all the answers. One can turn to religious leaders, mental health professionals, and others when the questions being asked require more details than you feel equipped to provide. In the end, we all desire the same outcome – to help our children stay afloat, no matter what storms life may bring. In Peace, Rabbi Adam Miller

TRAVEL

By Karen T. Bartlett

Skipping School With a Purpose

M

y mother never missed a day of school well into her teens, and later, as a respectable mom herself – as well as a Girl Scout leader and substitute teacher – she certainly never considered taking us kids out of school for travel, no matter how educational it might be. That, she rightly believed, is what school field trips, winter break, and summer are for. I got a lot of my mom’s genes, but I didn’t get that one. So if you’re a teacher, principal or truant officer (do they still have these?) please skip the next paragraph. Because this is a confession. Sorry/not sorry As a travel journalist (the best job in the entire world), I had several opportunities to take my school-age kids along. We had rules, of course: no missing important projects, and pre-assigned homework delivered on time and so on. The world became one big geography/ science/ history lesson, with authentic sensory experiences and interactions with people of different cultures that even YouTube can’t deliver. Fast-forward to now, and these two little people have evolved into global citizens with advanced degrees and a respect for the vast world beyond our own. Pink dolphins There was that week, deep in the primitive jungles of Venezuela, when Sarah dove into the Rio Orinoco to swim with the pink Amazon dolphins. Our indigenous guide from the Warao Indian tribe took us by canoe to meet the basket and hammock artisans in his stilt house village, where we bonded with some sweet kids and their moms. As an adult, Sarah has felt at home working among remote and primitive tribes of West Africa. NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2017

Blue-footed boobies & lava lizards Christopher, the budding environmental scientist, paid as much attention to naturalists’ lectures as he did to the blue-footed boobies, sea lions, and lava lizards of the Galapagos Islands, where he personally met Lonesome George, the last remaining descendent of Charles Darwin’s Pinta Island tortoises (subspecies Geochelone nigra Abingdon). Lonesome George has since passed away. Reality check The thing that National Geographic documentaries and taking your kids to remote destinations have in common is that reality happens. You see and experience stuff they don’t put into the travel brochures. For example, as our charming translator/guide follows Sarah into the river of pink dolphins, he calls to me over his shoulder: “there are piranha in here, but nothing to worry about.” The ocelot kitten he told her was cuddly – well, not so much. And Christopher’s most poignant moment in the Galapagos happened when he lay beside a baby sea lion in a shallow tidal pool as (the naturalist explained) it struggled to survive the realities of natural selection.

Roles are reversed Chris was devastated when I was unable to take him along on safari at Mala Mala Game Reserve in South Africa where, coincidentally, a National Geographic documentary was being filmed. I promised him that if he graduated from high school with straight A’s I’d take him there. He did, and to my great remorse, I still haven’t fulfilled that promise. Now the roles are reversed. As I write this, Sarah has invited me to camp on a mountaintop with her to watch the once-ina-lifetime full eclipse of the sun. And as you read this, I’m heading to the primitive South Pacific islands of Vanuatu, where Chris is taking me to stand at the precipice of one of the most spectacular erupting volcanoes on the planet. Watch these pages in November for the full story. Travel Editor KAREN T. BARTLETT has written and photographed more than a dozen travel destination books and published hundreds of travel features in publications throughout the world. The Magic of Singing 70 Reasons to Encourage Your Kids to Raise Their Voices

I

t happened a couple of years ago. My then 10-year-old daughter was moping around the house, grousing about some aspect of our lives that was not as ideal as she perceived her friends’ lives. And that’s when the light bulb went off. “Hey, why don’t you go upstairs and practice your choir songs,” I said in as non-punitive a tone as I could muster. Truth was, I was tired of the grousing. Comparing her life to her friends’ lives was becoming a bad habit. But my daughter had been singing in her elementary school choir once a week before school for a couple years, and she had recently been chosen to attend the state choir event. The director sent the kids home with a CD of music to each listen to and practice on their own. I decided to jump on this opportunity to give my non-instrument playing daughter a bit of regular “singing practice” time. My suggestion caught my daughter off guard. She paused, perhaps about to argue, but then thought about it, shrugged, and said, “Okay.” As she retreated up the stairs, I called after her cheerily, “Give it at least 20 minutes of practice, okay?” I had the feeling I was onto something. Moments later, the sound of her voice came wafting down

the stairs. The kid who had been moping about was now totally immersed in her music study. Thirty minutes later, she skipped down the stairs, humming and cheerful. “What’s for dinner?” she said. “Can I make it?” I’d hit the mood-improvement jackpot for my child. Since then, “singing practice” has become something of an institution in our home. No matter how many times I suggest, “Time for singing practice?” to my daughter, she never argues, she’s always willing to give it a go. And every time she does it, her mood is lifted and her attitude gets an adjustment without any fussing or futzing from me. I’m not sure whether singing practice can work the same magic for every child, but now that you know how powerful the practice might be, doesn’t it seem silly not to try it with your own song-loving kids? Singing is healthy physically, psychologically, and socially whether your child’s singing is pitch-perfect or not. Once you consider the many benefits singing can have on any member of your family, you may even decide to set aside your own daily singing time, and start to look for ways to get your whole family singing together and with others. If you are not convinced, you will be, once you check out this list of 70 good reasons to sing more regularly: NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2017
