SENSIBLE ARCHITECTURE

Before creatures form a visible shape, they are all in a fluid status. Some of them remain in this situation, while others are in the process of visualization. Human body is the result of this transformation. We are born with the ability to communicate with the external world by absorbing nutrition and exchanging air. At the same time, we are permeated in a modern world with various invisible fields around us. News and information become the fluid we live in, event and activities are the emerged results. As we sit in front of TV, computers or other terminal device, we are actually interacting with the invisible world. The interaction with external world through both visible and invisible fields can also be applied to modern architecture which has its own way to live with and respond to the environment.

BLURRED WALLS Lilong museum

Date: Fall 2009 Project type: Personal work

4

Lilong is the old life style in Shanghai, its one-way pattern give a boring first impression, but people who lived in interact their life with this space with their articles for daily use layered along the main pathway of the community block and blurred the boundary between them. It can been seen as the extend of the walls which contains all the activities

WALL NODES Different nodes of walls is always a place where trigger the tendency of staying. Different relationship between walls including distance, angles, gaps blur the integrity of spaces while involving more activities and communication.

PLAN DISTRIBUTION The plan of this project contains a variorty of scenes in two directions, visitors are able to interact with each other and the work of arts with the impression of experiencing the Lilong Space.

7

Exploded Axonometric View

The roof of this project is made of aluminum panel which reflects the surrounding historical site and sky view giving an integrated image from a higher spot compared to the blurred view from the inside of the museum. Each part in the museum has its own character. The area of opened walls in each room varies from 6.6% to 57.8% which enables different kinds of arts to be exhibited. At the end of the tourist circulation, there is a 20 seats lecture room helping visitors to know the exhibiton better.

TENSOR SPACE Mountain club

Date: Spring 2010 Project type: Personal work

14

Tensors are geometric objects that describe linear relations between vectors, scalars, and other tensors. Wikipedia The site of this project is on a mountain which has a variety of characters on its surface. Different types of trees, stones, hills, or creeks become geometric objects that describe linear space between vectors on its surface. The goal of this project is to enhance these features while interact activities with them.

TENSOR SPACE A Tube A is the main construction of this project, it serves as the vertical circulation in the building which captures the pine tree in the mountian sky and the lake view. Different angle interacted with floors imply the function of space and some even become the furniture of the interior space.

19

CIRCULATION B

20

TENSOR TUBE B Tube B is also the main construction of the building, it serves as the wondering circulation between a various of programs with a special space for an small tree.

21

AUDITORIUM SPACE

22

TENSOR TUBE C Tube C is a Y shape space with a light slope, it serves as the auditorium space for numerous events such as small concert, movie night or even a place for meditation. A big stone is the main focus in this tube.

Local citizens are more interacted with large scale buildings such as office towe, theatre, library, museum or big commercial complex compared to the tourists who are more interested in wondering along the famous streets in Shanghai. We decided to fill in the gap with weaved programs both for local citizens and tourists.

16Pu is a ideal point to achieve this goal, for its potential urban infrastructure systems-ferry and best points to connect the bund and Yu Garden. The method is to complete the 8 shape circle of tourists’ path by establishing a highly shared landmark both for citizens and tourists. It plays a role of pumb for the currents of the 8. LOOP.

URBAN STRATEGY : COMPLETE THE 8 LOOP When we study the circulation of both tourists and citizens, a clear division of these two currents appeared . The bund has the most obvious “division” phenomenon. Our proposal is to let tourists and citizens enjoy the city without this invisible division.

PROTOTYPE The prototype of this project is the combination of streets, tight-fit building and loose-fit building. One of the charactor of this system is the capability of connecting various scale of programs together while maintaining their features. In this project, this form enables tourists and local citizens to coexit with each other and creates an amazing interaction.

GOAL: INCREASED COOPERATION The project is intended to use 4 elements(behavior) seeing, walking, meeting, hearing to fill the gap between these segregations. Theatre is the main input program that interact with other programs. One character of the theatre is that it can attract people from everywhere with latest news and information but lack of stability is a big problem. So we try to interact this advantage with 4 elements extracted from site to extend using time in this project and increase the cooperation between each programs. On the other side, latest news and imformations which peole bring in play the role of updating these cooperation to keep it fresh and attractive.

SEEING This pattern is affected by sight toward historical buildings and has a step-by step change extending to the contrary direction. Program accommodated to this trend is also changed from public to private. Map of sight condition for street gazing

WALKING Walking pattern is the most useful path in this site which connect the two ends of the site and major stations(subway/bus). Elevators and branches spread along these pathes leading to different layers among the site. Map of path condition for strolling

47

MEETING Exsiting historical building can be the funny space to trigger the whole site. So the scale of the buildings around these buildings is smaller than the other spaces in the site which impress visitors with easy atmosphere to communicate. Map of outdoor open space

MY OWN SPACE One of the charactes about fabric is that it is shapless while maintaining the space. This project is for an artist living in a container which is difficult to change the long narrow space. What I suppose is to insert layers of fabric, let the furniture be the boundary of the space. A variety of furniture composition enables the owner to create his or her own space.
