Basil- (early Modern English, derived from Middle English 'basile', derived from old French 'basile', modern French 'basilic', Italian 'basilico', derived from middle Latin 'basilicum', 'basilicon'.) A name of several labiate plants, especially of the genus Ocimum. . Ocimum- New Latin. (derived from Latin 'Ocimum', an aromatic plant, basil.) A genus of labiate herbs and shrubs type of the tribe Ocimoideae. Also spelled, 'Ocymum'.
