SPEAKER BIOS Jim Canales was appointed president and trustee of the Barr Foundation in May 2014. Prior to joining Barr, he spent two decades in a variety of roles at The James Irvine Foundation in California, including president and chief executive officer from 2003 through 2014. Before working in philanthropy, Jim was a high school English teacher in San Francisco after earning a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in education from Stanford University. Bithiah Carter, President & CEO of NEBiP, has a passion for philanthropy and fueling the 21st Century mindset by shining a light on racial assets and how they can be leveraged to improve education, workforce, and economic resources in our communities. Bithiah is a member of Governor Baker’s Black Advisory Commission and has served on the board of, or is active in, a number of national and local organizations. Read more about Bithiah here. Bernard Haan is the founder and executive director of the Astra Foundation. Bern began a career in high tech and went on to lead the engineering team of an internet start-up. In 2000, he established the Astra Foundation. Since that time, Astra has supported a variety of projects and initiatives designed to help children thrive in their home and educational environments. Imari Paris Jeffries is the Executive Director of King Boston and brings a wealth of experience from the nonprofit management, community activism, education reform, and social justice sectors. A military veteran, he has served in executive roles at Parenting Journey, Jumpstart, Boston Rising, and Friends of The Children. Learn more about Imari here. Ibram X. Kendi a #1 New York Times bestselling author, professor of history and international studies, and the Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research. He is the author of four books, including Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, which won National Book Award for Nonfiction, and the New York Times bestsellers How to Be an Antiracist and STAMPED: Racism, Antiracism, and You, co-authored with Jason Reynolds. Ms. Bithiah Carter - President & CEO, NEBiP

Ciciley Moore is the program officer for the Office of the President at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. In this role, she provides leadership for program efforts and special initiatives of the president and CEO, develops strategic relationships representing the foundation across the U.S., and oversees grant-making in the priority areas of early childhood education, workforce development, health equity, and racial equity. The journey of becoming antiracist raises important questions: What exactly is an antiracist? Is it really possible to become antiracist--and how will we know if we have achieved our goal? What role does "white privilege" play in the journey to becoming antiracist? To guide our conversations in this crucial time, NEBiP and our partners welcome Professor Ibram X. Kendi to the #CouchConversations. A notable anti-racism scholar, Professor Kendi will provide expert insight on how the current anti-racist rhetoric can be translated to actionable change.

Nicole G. Price is incoming Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Wentworth College. She is currently the CEO of the Northeast Region of KidVax, LLC. She formerly served as the inaugural Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Suffolk University. Prior to promotion to this university-wide leadership role, she was the director of Diversity, Inclusiveness and Affinity Relations and later Interim Dean of Admissions at Suffolk University Law School. Alandra Washington is vice president for Transformation and Organizational Effectiveness at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, MI. She supports the president and CEO in advancing the development, implementation and oversight of quality improvement and organizational performance initiatives. Jay Williams has served as president of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. In this role, he serves on the boards of the MetroHartford Alliance, the Connecticut Economic Resource Center/AdvanceCT , and the CHEFA Community Development Corporation. In addition, he is a member of the Governor’s Workforce Council and the Community Foundation Opportunity Network Governing Council. Prior to coming to the Foundation, Jay served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, where he led the federal economic development agenda as the head of the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
