Hazy Memory

Art work by Alejandra Castro

Hazy Memory In Colombia, a social leader is killed every four days. As time goes by, figures are build that are used to analyze and to make statistics which can speak a little about the indices of violence in Colombia, in turn, these figures indirectly help to normalize this corrosive violence.

No number can be as big as the pain of a dismembered family or the pain of a country without memory. This is a pain without contours, without form that looks like a big black cloud over us, it is not seen but somehow it is carried inside.

This exhibition seeks to highlight the problem of violence in Colombia with a special approach to the social leaders who are victims of the conflict, people who lead communities and struggle to create peace in their territories. Which, sadly and unjustly, have been murdered .

The art work consists of two pieces.

1. Rostro (portrait) This piece seeks to represent two faces of violence. Violence from afar and violence up close. From afar it is understood as a great thick cloud that covers everything, without form, something that is there but can not be clearly defined. When you look closely you can see the deformed faces of the victims. This sculpture is made of glass jars, in each jar there is a drawing (the portrait of a murdered leader). The jars are one on another forming a large glass cube. In the distance it looks as if it contains a large smoldering smudge of gray. However, as you get closer you can clearly see the face of each of the victims.

2. Connecting the dots

Each number is a victim. Each drawing is a year. This series of drawings shows how a scenario of violence that is visualized from the union of the points is being traced. Since childhood I saw violence with simplicity and many times normality as well as the game of connecting the dots, a very present game in the childhood of many of us. The victims are still numbers and the violence in my country is still showing with simplicity. This second piece consists of a series of drawings which are based on the game Unir los puntos. Each drawing is a year and in each year there is the number of leaders murdered per year. the numbers are placed in such a way that by linking them, an image is created that demonstrates realities created by the violence, thus evidencing the problems that exist around the massacre of the social leaders
