Hey there readers. Travis here, welcome to the first issue of Nebula. We’ve got an absolute shitload of material for you to peruse in this issue ranging from poetry to art to band interviews to prose and a heap of random artwork done by the team here at Nebula Productions. We’ve spent the last 6 months or so getting this beast off the operating table and out to your hands and screens. We’ve been contacting artists worldwide to submit their musings and we’ve managed to get a great response, so I’d like to give a MASSIVE shout to everyone who’s work is in this issue…so…Thanks from the bottom of our hearts, you’ve helped us so much and if you feel like giving some more, please do. For any of our readers out there (and I mean anyone) if you’d like to submit an add for you band or business or submit some art, poetry, prose, random bloggery, photography, interviews, ideas on improving the zine or anything else you can think of feel free to email us at nebulanews@hotmail.com and we’ll definitely give you a space in our zine, page and consider your recommendations.

So have a read through the zine, place the stickers anywhere (viral advertising is amazing) and take some copies for your friends, there’s plenty to go around. We’ve got big plans for future issues and some other projects that fall under the Nebula umbrella so keep your eyes on the zine and on the screen. Well, that’s all from me for now, so We hope you enjoy this issue! I leave you with a poem. I’ve been reading the works of the Persian poet Omar Khayyam lately and sort of found this appropriate. Peace! Trav With them the Seed of Wisdom did I sow, And with my own hand labour'd it to grow: And this was all the Harvest that I reap'd "I came like Water, and like Wind I go."

I heard you say there's no way of knowing the worlds ahead. To live for then would be so tragic a waste. And wherever this life may be going, nothing we make is immune to the erosion of time. And everything we do can never equate the sentiment of nostalgia. And across an ocean of time, this love proves so heavy. But when I reach the final shores, I will look back, across the sea, Albert Albanez with obliged eyes.

ALEX GREY is a being from another world. Well that’s what I think because his work is that awesome. Mr. Grey melds together the physiological and the spiritual to create tripped-out, LSD-infused glowing portrayals of the human body and soul. He’s into that. You may recognise his work from Tool album covers. Check out his site www.alexgrey.com Taylor Wright Oversoul; 1997

Revolution Instead of Rebellion Dedicated to Lucy 1 May we all pray That on this day December 21, 2012, Whether we survive Whatever coincides We find our way To the stars. Something very important will happen I'm led to believe on this day But whatever it is that will happen I'm afraid I cannot say. Something wonderful I hope Something that will bring us joy In this country of ours that chooses To sacrifice security for toys. 2 Torn from the chimerical scribblings Of a young high school boy We have reason to believe That a change is coming. We have reason to believe Based on circumstantial evidence That although it will be obvious It will also be confusing. Allow me to say My precious subalterns That I support All progression. But how can I support A change? Insanity! How dare you ask me For such serious indiscretion.
3 We have exiled all of our Dantes. We have used up all our hope. Now is the time for change to come. May we all rise up at the same time And simply change the world. That is our only choice. Everyone now, listen to me. What I am about to tell you Is very important: "Stand up, go out, and meet someone. Go forth and multiply. Allow someone into your heart. All at once now, we shall go, You and I shall meet and chat Together, we will change things. And if you don't want a new world Leave, for I don't want you here. I only want a change for us. There must be something new We must try to achieve our power Because now we don't deserve life. I don't want to be your leader, But I don't want to be your follower Let us all just do this, and never look back. I can count to three if you want. Everybody get ready, for the world will change. On my count now, everyone go... 1, 2, 3 This is the day that the world changed forever."

Mary of Exeter William Seymour-Jones You light my day, you cloak the fear of my night. We found a wounded bird at work today, trapped between two buckets, survivng but on sparse water collected in the bottom of her pen, we took her to the vet, and upon the walk it made me think back to, Mary of Exeter, reincarnate. The valiant WWII pigeon, that came home from the front line each and every night to roost in her loft. To her loyal owner. To Britain. To her home. But one night she did not return from service, till very late, albeit four days over due her expect return date. She swooped in woozily, bathed in blood, with servere lacerations, marked from her neck to her breast. Her chest had been ripped wide open and she was bleeding profusely. She had been callously attacked by a craven nazi war falcon. Six stiches in her feathered supple skin, served tender the wound. She then returned, the following day, with not a single gripe nor groan, into the night. She set forth , back unto her mission of delivering messages of high import, to soldiers on the front line, in occupied France. Under nights cloak did she attempted to hide, but one night a german sniper shot hole through her wing. How ever brave, how ever valliant, how ever so, she managed to keep flying and return back home, with half her wing missing. Mary of Exeter, recognised for five years of service carrying top secret messages during the Second World War. She was the only winged creature to receive the Dickin Medal, and was buried at Ilford.
It's been a rough journey for Post-Hardcore outfit Dollarosa. In 2006 they were a solid landmark in the Ipswich music scene, until a fallout with the vocalist forced the band into a 2 year hiatus. Though the band kept writing music and searching for a vocalist, it was looking like all hope was lost. Then in late 2008, guitarists Micky T and Rhys, bassist Allanna, and drummer Dave, welcomed vocalist Jared Doevendans to the band. This conjured a whole new sense of enthusiasm and Inspiration. After months of hard work, they produced their first self-titled EP, boasting 5 explosive tracks. In July 2009, the band lost their original bass player Allanna, but were quickly revived by the introduction of new bassist Jason. Now with a solid line-up, a killer set of original tracks, with brand new songs on the way, this tightly-knit 5 piece Post-Hardcore band is ready to take on the world.
Her spirit, her valiance, her unwavering hope, her struggle to fulfill her duty, will never be forgot. For one day she might roost at your city loft and coo to you gently at night while you lay asleep. For her spirit may be what saves, redeems man from his ruthless gall in future years. CITIZEN LOUD
We can and, from time to time, we might – but, primarily, Citizen Loud are a rock band. We take a lot of influence from dance music and peripheral genres like funk and reggae but we are, first and foremost, a rock band. Are you loud? The loudness referenced in the name is more an ideological phenomenon than a sonic one. This is not to say that we aren’t a loud band on occasion but, generally speaking, we’re pretty regular volume musicians. We aren’t Motorhead – as much as we’d like to be. What’s this ‘we’ business? You’ve only got one permanent member in your band! There isn’t anything wrong with that, you know. Nine Inch Nails, Parliament-Funkadelic, The Orb, The Prodigy – all highly respected bands with but one permanent member. That said, I say ‘we’ because Citizen Loud is not a solo project and it never will be a solo project. All material is created in collaboration with other musicians. Those musicians just aren’t always the same people – though, sometimes, they are and it freaks me out when they join forces like that. Who do you play with then? Who are these supposed ‘musicians’ you speak of?
Untitled 32 This world, Forgetful by nature, Has chosen not to listen To its heart But Instead its own growing hunger. Never happy, nor content, It shudders with an addicted Withdrawal wrasp. As it pulls back To get that tender sliver of blood And pushes off with a quick pump Of his reflexive hand His mind is clear. Content to forget He'll float of into nothing With ignorance as his only companion. Samuel S Landy
I’ll play with anyone, really, but, in the past, Citizen Loud has comprised members of Mr Maps, My Fiction, Tara Simmons Band, Ubique Trio, IV Horsemen, Vestal Virgin and a clutch of solo musicians. There’s no rules or permanency about the line-up. It’s purely a matter of functionality. If I have time to play with someone, I’ll jam with them. If they work with the set-up, I’ll play live with them. Dude – what song was that you just played? That’s a difficult question to answer. We don’t play songs live. We improvise entirely. You improvise all your gigs? Isn’t that a little weird? Yes and no. It is unconventional but it certainly isn’t unheard of and the results aren’t exactly at the cutting edge of the avant-garde. The Necks and Miles Davis (during the mid-seventies, at least) improvise/improvised the entirety of their concerts while any number of DJs improvise their sets. The phenomenon of live techno (which, give or take some trippy ambience and noise, is pretty much what Citizen Loud does on stage) has been around since the late eighties and early nineties and was enjoyed by many people. You sure do name a lot of bands – do you think that makes your band better? Not at all. I think it helps to know precisely who one is ripping off but that doesn’t mean the end product will be any better. There are many experienced music journalists littered throughout Australia with bands that have completely and utterly gone unaided by the supposed knowledge of their helmsmen. Knowledge can only really take you so far in the arts – ‘those who can do, those who can’t, teach’.

Was that a Gilmore Girls quote? Yes. Isn’t Gilmore Girls a little lightweight for someone as serious as you? Citizen Loud, while quite a serious artistic venture, is not a po-faced band by any measure of the imagination. Roots Manuva’s best album, 2008’s Slime & Reason, was made largely under the guidance of what he called ‘the giggle factor’ – if something made him giggle, he kept it. Citizen Loud operates in a similar fashion. That said, Gilmore Girls is not lightweight. It is awesome. Isn’t this a little egotistical – asking yourself all these questions? Yes – but Thom Yorke and Serj Tankian have both done it before me. And that makes it okay, does it? Yes. If someone has done something before you, it is no longer something you can be held responsible for doing. What about stuff like murder? Yes. That too. The courts disagree with you. Well, firstly, the courts outlawed homosexuality and considered suicide a crime until this century, so they aren’t exactly what could be called a beacon of truth and justice and, secondly, what do you know about the courts? You’ve never even pretended to study law. My sister studies law. So does mine. Well duh. You did point it out first, you know. Are you sure it was me that did that, though? There is that, isn’t there?

Born October 12th, 1875 at 36 Claredon Square, Leamington, Warwickshire, England to a wealthy religious family during the height of the Victorian era Edward Alexander Crowley would spend the first 11 years of his life traveling with his father preaching. After tongue cancer took his father away and replaced him with a large inheritance and private school the young Aleister Crowley found himself having sexual relations with both male and female prostitutes. This eventually led to Crowley gaining more and more interest in occultism and he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Golden Dawn practiced Theurgy and Spiritual Development in 19th and 20th Centuries. Crowley was in the outer circle of the Golden Dawn and wanted to get in deeper but after being refused further initiation into the order Crowley went visited Macgregor Mathers (Founder of the Golden Dawn) and was immediately initiated. This angered the other members of the order and Crowley was soon caught up in an Occult face-off. Some years later Crowley was visited by Aiwass and was dictated The Book of the Law, its one rule Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law. This book in combination with the stele of revealing drove Crowley to form the philosophical religious group Thelema. Crowley would later combine O.T.O. (Ordo Templi Orientis) and the order of Thelema. By this time Crowley was well known amongst press and public as The Wickedest Man Alive and the Great Beast 666 and was traveling around USA and Canada practicing Sexual Magick. In April 1920 Crowley went to form the Abbey of Thelema where he would spend the next three years devoting his and the entire abbey’s lives to finding their True Will. He would spend three years in the Abbey before being banished by Mussolini in 1923, he lived for a while in Tunis and France until moving back to England to live the remaining years of his life. Crowley spent the last 15 years of his life further experimenting with magick, trying to publish his writings and also building up O.T.O. This was largely unsuccessful until about 30 years after his death when Grady McMurtry (then Outer Head of O.T.O) expanded internationally and interest was sparked in Crowley’s writings and the order. Crowley expanded his experimental techniques to the point of using consciousness expanding drugs and subsequently became an addict of Heroin (a side affect from heavy morphine use) and remained this way until his death on December 1, 1947, in Hastings, England. Crowley’s influence leeched it’s way into popular culture in the with Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) buying his Loch Ness home in Scotland, Ozzy Ozbourne singing and naming songs after Crowley and further general interest in his writings and teachings saw them printed for the masses and still widely distributed today. To Be Titled; 2009.
Untitled (I Would Hurt A Fly); 2009. COURTNEY BRIMS is a Brisbane based artist and amazingly is self-taught. You can see a lot of inspiration from fairytales and Victorian illustration in her work. She has also done work for Curvy magazine and some of her illustrations have been adapted to t-shirts. Check out her site www.courtneybrims.com
