Co-op Welcomes Trace McCuan as New C.E.O. Nueces Electric Cooperative is pleased to welcome Trace McCuan as the Coop’s Chief Executive Officer. “I am very excited to be joining one of the most progressive electric cooperatives in the nation, Nueces Electric Cooperative (NEC). NEC has a great Board and staff who have overcome the challenges of deregulation in a manner not attempted by other cooperative and municipal electric utilities in the state.” McCuan comes to the Co-op after serving as General Manager and CEO of the Kerrville Public Utility Board (KPUB), a position he has held since 2008. Prior to KPUB, McCuan worked for CPS Energy of San Antonio, Texas for over 23 years where he was Vice President of ERCOT and Federal Regulatory Affairs at the time of his departure. McCuan’s 33 years of industry experience includes experience in high-voltage transmission systems, substations, distribution systems, metering, business information systems, and power purchase. McCuan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Science degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio, 20
and completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program. He is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Texas and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Our choice of selecting Trace McCuan was based on his technical and administrative experience in managing electric utilities and a passion for working with all employees in providing the membership with the best service possible at an affordable rate. He brings to this position a vision of where NEC can be tomorrow beginning from where we are today. We look forward to Trace joining the NEC family.” McCuan will be the Co-op’s sixth C.E.O. since opening it’s door in 1938. He will become a part of the Co-op’s

rich history of serving south Texas and will continue to expand and enhance the Co-op’s unique business model . In 2001 the Co-op’s membership voted to deregulate making it the only deregulated Co-op in Texas and only one of a few in the country. In 2005 NEC officially formed a competitive retail subsidiary, NEC Retail who provides co-op electricity to consumers all over Texas. In 2008, the Co-op became the first to hold Navy Base contracts and currently owns and maintains the electric distribution systems for both Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and Naval Air Station Kingsville. More recently in August 2015 the Co-op announced the construction of a community solar array, which will be the first of its kind in South Texas. McCuan will reside in the Coastal Bend with his wife, Rhonda. They have one son, Jeff, who is currently serving in the Army Special Forces. He says, “I look forward to the new opportunity. My wife and I love the Texas Coastal Bend area and now get to call it home.“ McCuan succeeds John L. Sims who retired after 21 years as C.E.O. Coming Soon to the Calallen Office:
Under Construction Through mid-January, the Calallen office will soon be under construction to add a vestibule to the front entrance, as well as a canopy to cover the automated payment station which resides just off the of the drive-thru. A vestibule is a preliminary defense to external elements, such as rain. It will keep water outside of the main lobby to prevent slipping due to wet floors. The canopy will provide protection from rain and the glare of the sun to members who make payment using the automated paystation. During construction, members will be directed to enter / exit the building through a side entrance and will follow signage which will lead them

to the lobby. The main drive-thru will remain open. The automated kiosk will be closed for only a few weeks. Members will still be able to pay their bill after hours using the payment drop-box which will be located just before the building in the drive-thru.
Walk-in entrance will be temporarily rerouted Drive-thru will remain open Dropbox will be relocated Walk-in Entrance Drive Thru Construction Areas

Decrease High Winter Bills Before They Begin Last winter brought unpleasant weather extremes to Texas. Some parts of the
state saw temperatures drop to more than 20 degrees below normal, and many others experienced storms that tested the endurance of co-op staff and members alike. Nearly every home in Co-op Country was forced to run its heating system longer and harder than usual—and nearly everyone saw unwelcome higher bills as a result. At Nueces Electric Cooperative, we recognize that high bills cause worries. Every one of us at your co-op pays a utility bill too, so we personally understand your need to keep the household budget balanced while keeping your family warm.
AlexRat hs | iStoc k.com
We operate your cooperative based on the guidance of the Seven Cooperative Principles, which includes Concern for Community. We work hard to fulfill that commitment by providing safe and reliable energy for your homes and businesses, and we manage rates carefully to make sure your electric bill is as easy to navigate as possible. We are committed to helping you find reasonable solutions for your power dilemmas, too. The co-op offers several programs to help members manage their bills and accounts. There’s almost always more than one remedy for a situation, and we can help you weigh all the available options.
The most important way to prevent a higher-than-expected energy bill is to look for ways to decrease the amount of energy used. One thing we can’t change, no matter how hard we try, is that colder weather means most folks use more electricity to keep the house warm. Bundle up in warm clothes and take other steps to conserve energy during cold weather.
So be prepared, and manage your energy use. Seal any gaps that create drafts in your home, and augment your insulation if needed. Keep an eye on the thermostat to conserve energy, and set it as low as comfortably possible. Bundle up with sweaters, socks and slippers while in the house. Keep shades or curtains and blinds closed at night to reduce significant temperature changes inside the house. Always turn off lights you don’t need, and avoid using expensive electric space heaters if possible. They often use more energy than you might expect. We’ll work with you every way we can to help manage higher winter bills. We can review your account to make sure the bill is correct and accurate. If you have a concern about your meter, we can test it to see whether it’s working properly. We also can set up an audit to identify your home’s biggest energy users and sources of inefficiency. If needed and if you meet eligibility requirements, we can arrange a payment plan that will fit your budget. 24

Helpful Home Heating Hints Winter is here, along with the utility bills for heating your home. Heating and cooling can account for about half of utility bills. Use these ideas to keep your family warm economically:
Install a Programmable Thermostat A programmable thermostat can make sure temperatures in the home match the schedules of inhabitants. Turning back your thermostat for eight hours a day can save as much as 10 percent a year on your heating bill.
Perform an Air Leak Test Leaks in windows and doors are big culprits in a chilly household. If you feel a draft, first find the source. Perform this test on a windy day if possible, or while all exhaust vents are blowing. -First, close all windows and doors. -Second, light an incense stick or a match and pass it by windows and doors. If the smoke is sucked out or blown into the room, you have found an air leak. -Seal any leaks you find with caulk or weatherstripping.
Free Up Blocked Vents Wintertime can mean bringing in holiday decorations and additional chairs for visitors. Be sure your furniture and décor are not blocking heating registers so air can circulate more freely and save energy.

Space heaters can be dangerous when placed near combustibles or improperly plugged in.
If your house is more than 20 years old, an inspection could uncover fire hazards lurking behind your walls.
Space Heater Safety Portable electric space heaters can be a convenient source of supplemental heat for your home in cold weather, but they also increase the risk of fire and electric shock if they’re not used properly. Half of all home heating fires occur in December, January and February, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. More than 65,000 home fires are attributed to heating equipment each year. These fires result in hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries and millions of dollars in property damage. Fire and electrical hazards can be caused by space heaters without adequate safety features, space heaters placed near combustibles or space heaters that are improperly plugged in. Safety should always be a top consideration when using space heaters. Here are some tips for keeping your home safe and warm when it’s cold outside: • Make sure your space heater has a label showing that it has been tested by a recognized testing laboratory. • Before using any space heater, read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels carefully. • Inspect heaters for cracked or broken plugs or loose connections before each use. If anything is frayed, worn or damaged, do not use the heater. • Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you’re leaving a room or going to sleep, and don’t let pets or children play too close to a space heater. • Space heaters are meant only to provide supplemental heat and should never be used to warm bedding, cook food, dry clothing or thaw pipes. • Proper placement of space heaters is critical. Heaters must be kept at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, including paper, clothing and rugs. • Locate space heaters out of high-traffic areas and doorways, where they may pose a tripping hazard. • Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, which could overheat and result in a fire. Do not plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater. • Place space heaters on hard, level, flat surfaces. Never place heaters on cabinets, tables, furniture or carpet, which can overheat and start a fire. • Always unplug and safely store the heater when it is not in use. —ESFI www.nueceselectric.org
Time for an Inspection Chances are, the last time you had your home inspected was the month you moved into it. It’s time to do it again. Unless your house is brand new, fire hazards could lurk behind the walls in your electrical wires. Frayed wires, loose connections and overloaded circuits could be dangerous. If your house is more than 20 years old, schedule an inspection right away. You need to know if your home’s system can handle today’s load that includes computers and large electronics, and you should install ground-fault circuit interrupters to prevent electrocution. Before the electrician arrives, do your own home inspection. Look for and fix: - Outlets that spark when you insert or remove a plug and loose outlets that won’t hold a cord. Have the electrician replace deteriorated outlets. - Overloaded outlets. If every outlet requires a power strip, have your system upgraded with several more outlets. - Extension cords that have become permanent fixtures. Extension cords are made for temporary use only. Rearrange furniture to move your electrical device closer to an outlet so you won’t need the longer cord. - Unobstructed outlets within reach of children. Plug open outlets with plastic safety plugs to keep little fingers out.

Member Update: Payments By Phone
Employee Updates Matt Riviera Groundman Apprentice
As part of our dedication to provide safe, secure service, Nueces Electric Cooperative has implemented a phone payment system. Members can still pay their bills over the phone with a debit card, credit card or check by using our pay-by-phone. The only difference is the phone payment is automated rather than speaking with a representative.
Originally from Port Ludlow, WA, Matt recently moved to the area with his wife and two children to join the Co-op family. Matt is a graduate of Northwest Lineman College in Idaho and is looking forward to gaining experience and knowledge. Matt will be a part of the underground line crew where his experience in fiber and telecommunications will be put to good use. In his spare time, Matt enjoys hunting, fishing and four-wheeling.
With this automated service, you enter your payment using the buttons on your phone’s keypad. You can also use the system to change your phone number and set up recurring payments. Why is NEC using a new pay-by-phone system?
We are switching to this new system to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. PCI requirements represent a worldwide standard for processing payments that prevents credit card fraud and other data security breaches. NEC is committed to the protection of your personal information, and the cooperative must switch to this new automated phone system to keep accepting credit/debit card payments.
Joe Huerta III Ricardo Service Center - District Operations Supervisor Five-year employee Huerta has been promoted to the position as of the end of November.
How will the new system benefit me?
The pay-by-phone system increases the security on your account, providing more protection for your information than ever before. BernardaSv | iStoc k.co m
Huerta says, “I look forward to working with the line crew to better assist the Kleberg area members.” Huerta, began his career with the co-op in 2010 as a Ground man Apprentice and has since completed his DOL (Department of Labor) Journey Line Worker Certification. As the District Operations Supervisor, Huerta will oversee the Ricardo office’s warehouse operations which includes all power line maintenance and Co-op equipment. He will supervisor 2 employees.

What is the PIN?
The first time you use the service, you will be asked to create a personal identification number, or PIN, to protect your account. Before creating your PIN, you will enter the last four digits of your Social Security number to verify your identity. When paying by phone, please also have your account number ready before calling. How else can I pay my bill?
You can still pay your bill in person at any of our offices or online at www.nueceselectric.org while over-the-phone payments are required to be entered through 361-3872581. We thank you for your cooperation as NEC works to provide you with safe, convenient payment options.
