Niagara Canada A diversified manufacturing base and supply chain network…

RICH HISTORY OF:

 Agricultural Production

 Advanced manufacturing  Power generation  Logistics  Transportation equipment  Primary metal manufacturing

Niagara Canada A diverse, prosperous, and growing economy…  Advanced manufacturing for automotive, aerospace and energy sectors

 Agri-business including greenhouse and wine industry

 Bioproducts

 Alternative energy

 Tourism

Niagara Canada Offers a strong supply chain network…  The Niagara Industrial Association, (NIA) a consortium of over 70 leading manufacturers, is leveraging their expertise to support advanced manufacturing.  The NIA offers one-stop shop sourcing for supply chain components.  Smaller entrepreneurial companies are emerging to create new products and niche markets.

Niagara Canada Offers a strong Agribusiness and Bioproducts environment…  Biotek Inc., and pharmaceutical drug manufacturers Biolyse Pharma Corp. and Pharmetics inc.  Home to a growing number of international bio-based food ingredient manufacturers; CASCO and Jungbunzlauer International,

 A thriving and innovative Greenhouse industry focused on floral and hydroponic vegetable production, with a Greenhouse Area of 2,120,068 square metres, representing 18% of the provincial total, as well as the highest floral concentration in Ontario.  Fruit and Nut Tree farms representing over 40 %of the provincial total, with poultry and egg production at just under 10%, and poultry inventories of %15 of the Ontario marketplace

Niagara Canada Best practices…  PlanET Biogas Solutions designs, builds and operates anaerobic digestion systems that convert waste biomass to biogas. They have installed two systems in the Niagara Region, both at local greenhouses which are serving both of their heating needs.  Since March 2002, AbitibiLandfill to power 10% of its 100% recycled newsprint manufacturing operations. In December 2003, the project was expanded to provide landfill gas for 25% of its steam requirements.

 Bioenergy produced from plant and animal feedstocks is growing by an estimated 10% a year. The waste to energy receptor based in the Niagara Region offers a compelling basis to attract waste to energy products manufacturers and suppliers to the Region.

Niagara Canada Best practices…  Niagara is home to the Walker Industries group of companies, and the Walker Environmental Group (WEG)  The WEG is a full service environmental solutions provider using proven technologies to develop and operate infrastructure that helps their clients reduce environmental impacts, improve energy efficiency and achieve higher environmental performance.  A diverse range of services including composting, biosolids management, renewable energy, site remediation, IC & I waste haulage, landfill disposal among others  WEG Landfill Gas Utilization Project:  100 million m3 of landfill gas collected and utilized for energy production

Niagara Canada Continued cluster development and growth…  With existing expertise and a substantial research infrastructure in fermentation for the wine industry Niagara is well positioned to diversify into industrial fermentation.  Jungbunzlauer (JBL) in Port Colborne is an example of an industrial fermentation facility. The company produces citric acid through microbial fermentation of waste, renewable carbohydrate feedstocks, such as by-products of the corn milling process at neighbouring facility Casco. Citric acid is used in the food and beverage industry, cleaning, construction, textile, paper and pharmaceutical industries.  The JBL Casco partnership is also an example of environmentally sustainable manufacturing, where the waste by-products of one manufacturer are used by another to produce value-added products.

Niagara Canada Demonstrated collaborative support from academic and industry partners…  Strong academic and industry R&D base  Niagara College applied research: Niagara Research and The Research and Innovation Division, Horticulture and Greenhouse; Wavelength-Selective Thin-film Solar Cells research & construction for power generation, plant health, & roof-top placement  Brock University research: Niagara Health and Bioscience Research Complex, Cool Climate Oenology & Viticulture Institute,  Vineland Innovation and Research Centre: horticulture and floriculture research, innovation and commercial activity  McMaster University: Manufacturing Research Institute; Niagara College & Brock University Partnership in the Golden Horseshoe Biosiences Network

Niagara Canada Provides highly educated, experienced, and skilled workforce…  Brock University; McMaster University; University of Waterloo

 Niagara College: Technology Skills Centre, Customized Training

Niagara Canada Provides highly educated, experienced, and skilled workforce…  Niagara College offers environmental faculty and students the opportunity to work with local industry partners on real-world projects through coursebased assignments and applied research initiatives. Areas of Research Include : •Ecosystem assessments and monitoring methods •Energy management •Post-restoration monitoring •Site and habitat remediation (ecosystem restoration) •Waste and hazardous waste management •Watershed management using wetland bio-filter systems •Composting Infrastructure: •Environmental, chemistry, computer and GIS labs •Ecological "living labs" and environmental monitoring facilities •Wetlands and trails along the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO recognized biosphere •State-of-the-art equipment and software •Unique team of student research assistants and volunteers, the Niagara Environmental Corps (NEC)

Niagara Canada A Region with strong competitive business costs… 

2010 Competitive Alternatives study of international business costs confirmed once again that Ontario business costs are among the most competitive of the G8 countries
