Real estate Make moving Metro Creative Connection
employ a few tricks to make moving much easier.
It should come as no surprise that spring kicks off one of the busiest times of year in the housing market. Warm weather makes it more comfortable to see and display homes, leading to more listings and open houses. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average person in the United States changes residences more than 11 times in his or her lifetime. With each move, the process of moving may become more familiar. But even the most practiced nomad can find moving to be an overwhelming experience. Those on the cusp of moving and nervous about packing up and leaving can
Research areas carefully Buyers are advised to do their research when seeking new towns or cities to call home. There are many factors to consider, including school district ratings, proximity to shopping, distance from work/ commute times, availability of transportation, climate, and crime ratings. Before falling in love with a particular home, potential buyers can visit the area in which the home is located during a typical weekday to get a feel for the atmosphere. Check out shopping centers, observe the residents and drive by the schools and businesses. This can help paint an accurate
picture that may or may not differ from that depicted in the real estate listing.
Stack the deck Working with qualified professionals who have gone through the moving process before can make for easier work for buyers and sellers. Ask for recommendations regarding real estate companies, real estate attorneys, home inspectors, insurance agents, and all of the other people who will assist with buying, selling and moving. Carefully vet these professionals, relying on third-party reviews as well as any information provided by the Better Business Bureau.
belongings into a storage center prior to moving, and then gradually take items from the storage unit to your new home. This will free up space to make repairs to your new home and give you time to figure out decorating schemes while ensuring clutter won’t get in the way of renovation projects. New homeowners also can take their time sorting through boxes and getting rid of items they may not need in their new homes.

grocery store meals. In addition, stock up on staples such as paper plates, toilet tissue, light bulbs, and cleaning supplies in advance of the move so you won’t have to unpack everything at mealtime or when you want to clean after arriving at your new home.
all agreed upon information spelled out explicitly in a written contract. Red flags to consider include movers who don’t make on-site inspections for estimates and those who demand payment in advance before the move.

The future of the Riverside Cemetery’s Perpetual Care (PC) program, specifically the distribution and care of grave site flowers, was the focus of a public meeting on Thursday, June 28. Just over 100 people packed the backroom at the Neepawa Public Library to share their thoughts on the issue and how it should be operated moving forward. The open house began with Mayor Adrian de Groot going over a PowerPoint presentation that outlined the numbers associated with the program and a definition of just what “perpetual care” actually is. The province’s cemetery act defines “perpetual care” as, “the preservation, improvement, embellishment, and maintenance, in perpetuity and in a proper manner of lots, plots, tombs, monuments, or enclosures, in a cemetery or of compartments in a columbarium or mausoleum.” In Neepawa, however, a local bylaw

It was a sweet day in Neepawa on Saturday, July 21 as the 2018 edition of Jam Fest took to the streets. The outdoor festival was organized by Rochelle Unico, Bernadette Tripon, Rrain Prior and Amanda NaughtonGale and featured street vendors, an art show and a wide array of musical enter ta inment. A long with those festivities, two of the events that were quite prominent were the jam tasting competition and walking parade. Some people love curling, some people love watching and some don’t really care for the sport at all. Regardless of how everyone feels about hurling stones down a sheet of ice to hit other stones, one thing most people do have in common is the desire to help others. That’s the desire that Neepawa Curling Club is hoping will bring people in to their second annual Curl for a Cause event on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019. Gary and Marsha Forgue organized the event last year to benefit a young boy with cancer and it went so well that they decided to do it again. “Last year, it was really spur of the moment how it all came together,” Marsha said. “We had a mixed curling fun night planned, which then turned into Curl for a Cause and the profits were donated to Logan Kilburn and his family. It just kind of happened, there was no planning really.” “Last year we raised just over $7,500,” Gary noted. “We did plan on having one this year, but we didn’t know for what,” he added. Marsha continued, “Then after we saw [the] article in the [Neepawa Banner & Press] about Makayla, Gary said, ‘Let’s see if we can do this again!’” Makayla Aarts is a four-year-old girl from Neepawa who was recently diagnosed with cancer for the second time. She’s been in and out of Winnipeg over the past couple of months for her chemotherapy treatments. Her parents, Chantel and Travis Aarts, have been off work, staying in a hotel near the Children’s Hospital. All the money raised from this year’s curling event will go to the family to help them pay for their travel and accommodation during Makayla’s treatments. The evening will feature a round robin of mixed doubles curling teams, a supper partially donated by Chicken Corral, prize raffles, a 50/50 draw and refreshments. A portion of the team entry fees and supper, as well as all of the money from the raffles and 50/50 and any additional donations will go to the Aarts family. More about Curl for a Cause on page 6

Snowshoeing is just one of the many ways area residents can enjoy winter at Riding Mountain National Park.
Submitted RMNP Winter is the perfect time to experience the outdoors and learn more about our environment. Parks Canada is excited to offer a variety of winter experiences including winter accommodations at Riding Mountain National Park for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Our winter offer officially kicked off earlier this month. The south entry gate is open on weekends and during the week, visitors can pick up a park pass and get information at the Administration Building in Wasagaming. Overnight guests of the park will be able to enjoy cozy accommodations in one of five Parks Canada winterized oTENTiks, one of which is pet friendly. Stay cozy by the wood stove with electrical heat as back up for that middle of the night chill. Cook food over the fire, the BBQ, or in the insulated
kitchen shelter. Strap on your skis or snowshoes right from the deck of your oTENTik and hit the nearby groomed trails. Or for the adventurous types, try the 14 km trek out to Cairns Cabin for a rustic weekend getaway. At Riding Mountain National Park, visitors can also skate under the trees on the skating rink behind the Visitor Centre, check out animal tracks while wandering on snowshoes, do some fat biking and go ice fishing on Clear Lake and Lake Audy. This w inter season, experience the wonder of Riding Mountain National Park on a guided experience. Start your day with a guided snowshoe trek to an abandoned bear den, then gather around the campfire, sip hot chocolate and learn about animal tracks with a Parks Canada interpreter. Wi nter Advent ure Weekend is happening Feb. 8-10, 2019. Make sure
you stop in Wasagaming to check out the full schedule of activities, more of which will be added as the event approaches.
The Manitoba Agricultural Museum, in Austin, opened their doors for Winter Wonderland, Dec. 14-16 and Dec .21-23. Visitors could take a sleigh ride to see the Homesteaders’ Village decorated for the season. The sleigh ride teams were supplied and driven by museum volunteers Art and Lori Gibson and Lynn and Alex Christison. Lori Gibson said the event received the largest attendance ever that weekend.
Be sure to bundle up this winter!
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven.

It has been a good year
A
s I prepared to write this year end column, I looked back at last year’s. In it, I noted it had been a tough year for newspapers in general, as several papers had closed. This year hasn’t seen nearly as many closures across North America and none in Manitoba. In fact, there has been some new papers start up in the U.S., but I am not sure if there have been start-ups in Canada. I think the reason that local newspapers are doing a bit better may have been outlined in my last year’s column. I said a year ago that local newspapers are a much more reliable source of news than Facebook, TV channels or even radio. The closer the news gathering is to the source of the news and the targeted readership audience, the better off everyone gets to be. Both the Neepawa Banner & Press and the Rivers Banner are having a better year than last year. There are two reasons. Local news is best and advertisers are realizing that while there are lot of newer (and more glitzy) alternatives out there, they may not be as effective as first thought. Pop-up ads on the computer are annoying at best and easily grow wearisome. I find I click away from any internet site that has popup ads. TV commercials are very repetitive and also very annoying. Newspapers, and the stories and ads they carry, are more passive, less in your face and offensive to your senses. Your newspaper ad isn’t going to jump off the screen at you or yell in your face. Your newspaper just sits quietly on the kitchen table until you are ready to pick it up. No noise, no sensory

Ken Waddell overload, just nice relaxing pages of pictures, stories and news about the people closest to you. The other thing that is happening is also a matter of quiet reliability. The local paper has no desire to run lies or alternative facts, the so-called “fake news”. No desire to run such garbage, but also, the local paper would not get away with it, even if they wanted to do so. If a local publisher mistakenly runs an incorrect story, it is one thing, but if an intentional misstating of the facts were to happen, the publisher would hear about it within the hour. Another factor that is slowly coming into play is that Facebook, even without all its fake news problems and data breach problems, is not being seen by as many people as one would think. If we post a story to FB, an ordinary story gets 200 to 300 views. If it is a bigger story, we get a couple of thousand perhaps. In contrast, the Rivers Banner is seen by 4,400 people and the Neepawa Banner & Press is seen by 20,000 people. Granted, not everyone reads their paper cover to cover, but readership surveys show that 85 per cent of readers read their local paper every week. The other beautiful thing about a local paper is that you don’t have to remember where
on web sites you saw a story and you don’t have to stay glued to your TV to get the news. Yes, it has been a tough time for newspapers, but it has turned around. It has been a better year in the local newspaper industry for sure. And here’s an interesting fact. Some well intentioned, but misled soul at Chrysler Canada decided to drop all newspaper ads. They dropped weeklies and dailies cold turkey. Well guess what? It has been about 22 months since that fateful decision and their sales are down by about 22 per cent. Sure, you can advertise all you want. You can use Facebook, websites, TV, radio, they all have their place. You can put posters on Hydro poles if you want. But for local and regional advertising, the best alternative is still the local newspaper. May God richly bless you and yours this Christmas season.

hen the federal or provincial governments look at agriculture in the context of emissions and carbon taxes, it’s usually seen as a contributor. It’s true that agriculture is a consumer of fossil fuels— burned in tractors and combines or to heat greenhouses— but those in the industry also know that agriculture is on the other side of the equation. According to the 2016 Census of Agriculture, there were 159 MY m i l l ion acres PERSPECTIVE in agricultural production, giving farmers a huge role to play Kate in activities like carbon seques- Jackman-Atkinson tration and managing or mitigating the effects of more severe weather. We haven’t seen the positive role the industry can play really talked about at the national level, until now. Earlier this month, a Canadian Senate report was released, called “Feast or Famine”. The 11 senators who formed the committee studied how Canada’s efforts to meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target might affect the country’s agriculture, agri-food and forestry sectors. The final report included 16 recommendations. The agriculture sector is important to Canadians. Not just to farmers and rural Canadians, but also those in the downstream industries that depend on it. In 2014, one in eight Canadians was employed in the agriculture and agri-food sectors and those sectors generated nearly $112 billion, or 6.7 per cent, of Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) in that year. In preparing the recommendations, the senators wanted to find a balance between protecting the environment and supporting the foundation of Canada’s economic well-being — Canadian workers and consumers. In their research, the senators found that both industries were already being impacted by climate change. From more invasive species and frequent forest fires, to irregular weather patterns and more severe floods and droughts, those in the forestry and agriculture industries are on the front lines. Many of the recommendations are ways to foster and strengthen innovation and reward those producers who are undertaking practices that provide benefits to the ecosystem. The recommendations also aimed to help insulate producers, and the broader, food consuming public, from increasing costs of production. The recommendations include exemptions on fuel costs for heating and cooling machinery used in production, as well as propane and natural gas used in farming. To me, the most interesting recommendations were around recognizing the work farmers do to combat climate change and mitigate its effects. Recommendations from the Senate report included building on existing provincial models to develop offset protocols that would allow agricultural producers and forest owners/managers to receive additional income through carbon credits. Senators also want to see research to help establish baseline levels of soil organic carbon, important information that can be used to support the development of offset protocols for carbon sequestration across Canada. The committee also recommended that federal agencies work with their provincial and territorial counterparts to ensure that there are incentives available across Canada for beneficial management practices. But not only that, they also want to see support for those already doing this type of work, something missing from much of the legislation I have seen proposed. If governments were serious about actually reducing carbon in the atmosphere, not just about implementing another tax, they would harness the power of those who control the vast majority of Canada’s productive land base. Right now, there are very few incentives and almost nothing to recognize the large role farmers can play and the work many are already doing. Hopefully that will change.

The big “if”
DECEMBER 28, 2018
I
n three days, 2018 will be history. The glowing ball in New York’s Times Square will have dropped, clock towers and church bells will have rang 12 times and fireworks, loud cheers, hugs, kisses and the sounds of Auld Lang Syne will bring us into 2019. The following morning will feature parades, concerts and enough football games to satisfy every football addict’s deepest craving. But when the sun rises on the morning of Jan. 2, most of us will wonder what kind of year lies ahead. Predictions have been made– they always are and more often than not, they are wrong. The fact is that we don’t know what the future holds. Every forecast we make is always preceded by a big “if.” “If” certain things happen (and we have no guarantee that they will), we will pass another milestone in life or be able to take in an event or enjoy an activity we’ve dreamed of for years. Now there are some who will argue that since the

start with a plan, then select the wood, carefully cut and shape it, put the pieces together and finish it. Every step of the process is carefully planned. “Measure twice, cut once” isn’t just a suggestion for these men. It is the law and, as they will testify, failure to obey this law can lead to disaster. But even their best plans don’t always achieve the desired results. Wood can crack and cracks need to be repaired. Dadoes, rabbets and dovetails must be cut correctly or the finished product won’t fit together properly. And, as every good woodworker knows, you never spread a drop of glue until you’ve dry fit everything to make sure your project will assemble correctly. If something doesn’t look right, you can
always change it. But once the glue is dry and set, changes are difficult at best and most of the time are impossible. It’s the same in life. There’s nothing wrong with setting goals and having a plan that will help you meet them. But life may not always work out according to plan. So we need to be ready to adapt and adjust to the challenges that come our way. This is where our faith can be a valuable asset. In his letter to the churches, St. James assures us that when we face challenges for which we are not prepared, we don’t have to go through them alone. God is always close at hand. By his grace and with his help, we can face each day with dignity, courage and optimism. We don’t know what the future holds. But we know this: God holds the future in his hands and he will bring us safely through whatever challenges the coming year may bring. I wish all my readers and their families a very happy New Year.
Great-grandchild number five arrived and six is on the way. Three boys and two girls, all healthy and active. I was able to spend a week with family at Christina Lake, just south of Fort Mac. Watched the interaction and support offered to each other, game playing, bonfires and fishing. I did not go fishing. The Divine has been and is gracious and I am blessed with a partner. His family has welcomed me, enlarging again my circle. And I give humble thanks. This year has offered opportunity for spiritual g row t h, wa l k ing w it h friends through the valley of the shadow of death, celebrating milestones, relishing daily life. Old
friends become more precious, new ones, treasures added. There’s something so very therapeutic about laughing without restraints. Familiarity allows that and more. We are able to weep together unashamedly as well. Silence in their presence is not awkward or uncomfortable. What will the year/years ahead bring? Watching the news is discouraging. Then I watch the youth, the young adults. The youth I know are inspiring, loving the environment and all creation. I shake not my head in despair at the future of this world, for I see and feel the care the younger generation is developing for the earth and its people. Hats off to all parents who love and guide their children in an attitude of sharing, caring and protecting. May compassion, ‘do unto others’, become the guide for the year to come. A comfort as I look back and a challenge as I look forward.
FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein future is so uncertain, we should just relax, go with the flow, let life unfold as it may and live with whatever happens. But that’s not always wise. Over the past few weeks, I have become a huge fan of two young men from the United States. They aren’t politicians, academics or religious gurus. They are professional woodworkers who produce content for YouTube. Their creations are absolutely stunning. They use hardwood (one actually cuts, saws, dries and mills his own), softwood, plywood or particle board, depending on what they are building. When you see them on YouTube, everything they do looks so easy. But it isn’t. Building one item can take a month or more. These men
Looking back...
t has been a year of wonder and contentment. Some travel, some more learning, lots of love and laughter, work that is fulfilling, rewarding and enjoyable. What more could one wish for? This year’s travel was more than a holiday, in many ways it was a pilgrimage. I saw sights I never longed to see, Auschwitz/ Birkenau, memorials to some of the worst atrocities committed by humankind. I saw sights I long longed to see, the Isle of Iona, a place of peace, a thin place, where heaven and earth are but a breath apart. Perhaps it is my stage in life, a bit more introspective and contemplative, but I feel this journey was the culmination and summation of what I have seen and felt in many other travels. Both sites. Once again I had the opportunity to share my home with family. This summer, a set of grandchildren and their fur family joined

Later, I was able to host/home children, youth and young adults. It is as natural as breathing for me. Simply grateful for the space to share. As I have assumed sole responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the property to which I hold title; the garage door has been replaced – okay that was because I backed out of it!– and the garages have been clad with metal siding. And the plans I have for next year! The family clan has grown and is growing.

T
he year 2018 is finished. When we look back to happenings in 2018, we know that the year went by very fast and now we are making plans for this coming year. Some of us might think that it is a good thing that this year is finished and are looking forward to a brighter and happier year. Others hope that this coming year will be just as good or even better than the past year has been. I have a habit of liking to plan ahead of time. It can become a problem when plans do not come out as hoped and I have to make adjustments. Again, I learn that God is in control and nothing happens without Him knowing about it and we can rest in His wise bestowment. David admits in Psalm 139 that the Lord knows him and understands his thoughts afar off and that He is acquainted with all his ways. When we surrender our life to the Lord, we can be assured that He will look after us till the end. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

This will free up space to make repairs to your new home and give you time to figure out decorating schemes while ensuring clutter won’t get in the way of renovation projects. New homeowners also can take their time sorting through boxes and getting rid of items they may not need in their new homes.

Your core and more
By Dr. Beth Melendy BSCs DC Chiropractor
As a chiropractor, a lot of my day is spent treating dysfunction of the lumbar spine, so today I wanted to touch on the core and what exactly that is. The muscles of the body that make up the core are foundational to movement. All movements in sport rely on the core to transfer energy from the lower body up into the upper body and out the arms. Strengthening the core will improve performance and injury prevention in any sport. The core is part of the kinetic chain of energy transfer necessary for mobility. If the core were not functioning properly, it is not able to support the weight of the upper body and when the core functions properly, it is able to support compressive forces much greater than the weight of the upper body. What is the core? Often people think only of the abdominals when thinking core. The core is made up of all the muscles that support the spine, including the back muscles and the obliques. If you were to imagine the spine as the mast of a ship, the muscles on the front, back and sides would be the guy wires that give it support and keep it from falling. These muscles are: Rectus Abdominis (front of body), Internal and External Obliques (sides of body), Erector Spinae, Quadratus Lumboreum and Paraspinal Muscles (back of body). Other muscles which contribute to this support are: Gluteals, Diaphragm and Hip Musculature. The Thoracolumbar Fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds some of these muscles. It is passive and not contracting like muscles and also plays a role when transferring force between the upper and lower body. Stability is also not dependent on the muscles alone. The nerves in the spine need to be functioning to carry position sense information up to the brain. This is about the environment you are in. Is the ground uneven, are you leaning too far forward or backwards? Are you carrying uneven weight in your hands? The nerves must also be carrying information from the brain/spinal cord out to the muscles to cause them to contract in certain ways to keep up upright in the environment you are in. If the nervous system is not functioning properly, this will impact the stability in the core.
How do I strengthen my core? This should be a gradual progression. Before beginning a core program, the length and mobility of the muscles should be evaluated. If there are any underlying imbalances, strengthening muscles in this state will only contribute to the dysfunction. One common one is a tight hip flexor, which causes weakening in the gluteal musculature, this causes more lumbar extension. The majority of our population spends hours sitting. This can contribute to shorter, tightened hip flexors. Once the length and mobility of the muscles have been evaluated, you can begin with exercises that help fire the muscles, connecting the awareness of the muscle contraction to your exercise. Some helpful exercises are: 1. Cat Camel – on hands and knees, putting the spine through flexion and extension. This warms up the joints you are going to be working around. 2. Crunch – Lay on your back with one leg straight and one knee bent. This stabilizes the core and prevents forces that could cause a disc herniation. Then slightly lift the head and shoulders up. This activates the muscles in the front, the rectus abdominus. 3. Plank – in a push-up position on the elbows. This fires the whole core musculature. 4. Side Bridge – Lay on your side on elbow and top leg in front of bottom leg. Lift your torso off the floor. This fires the internal and external obliques and strengthens the muscles of the side of the body. 5. Bird Dog – On hands and knees, with opposite arm and leg raising. Maintaining a neutral spine posture. This fires the muscles of the back, the Erector Spinae, quadratus lumborum and works the gluteal muscles of the stationary leg. This exercise safely strengthens the extensors of the back. When doing straight back extension with weight, it can cause a lot of irritation to the facet joints in the spine.

This is a safe and effective way to strengthen the spinal erectors. The exercises noted above have been researched to ensure that they will not damage the tissues in the spine. Dr. Stu McGill, in the University of Waterloo, Ont., is an expert on the subject and has designed the above exercise set. I had the honour of working in his spine lab during my undergraduate education. There are a lot of available core exercises, but many of them can damage the spine, causing disc herniation and facet irritation. This is why the above exercises are the ones I

recommend. It is extremely important that these exercise are performed properly. See a professional musculoskeletal health care provider to have you core evaluated, and proper exercise instruction. A qualified personal trainer can also instruct in these exercises. Some other great exercises to strengthen the core are yoga, palates, even running and walking will require the core to be functioning properly. Keeping your core strong will protect your spine and keep you active without injury! Activity Fact: Your core musculature are in constant movement, even
