“We would love anyone that would love to sing,” shared Salmon. “I hon estly believe that you can make beautiful music with anyone that loves to sing.”

The NACC originally formed in 2013, conducted by Sangmyoung Kim and accompanied by Sunwha Her. These two, originally from Korea, led the choir until December of 2016, at which time Durston took over to ensure the continuation of the group, assisted by Chapman.

The Neepawa arts scene is about to get even more musical this fall. Some local volunteers are cur rently working on getting the Neepawa Area Com munity Choir (NACC) started up again after it disappeared due to COVID-19. Blair Chap man, Susan Salmon and Pat Martin have collabor ated to get the choir up and running again, with Chapman and Salmon as co-conductors.Theplanis for the choir to meet Wednes day evenings, starting in October, at Neepawa Area Collegiate (NACI). Salmon and Chapman both have experience teaching music. Salmon taught music at both schools in Gladstone for 32 years, having just retired at the end of the last school year. She has also run an adult choir through her church for many years. Salmon was also singing in the community choir for a couple of years before it was forced to dissolve.

The choir kept on sing ing right up until 2020, when COVID-19 shut down all types of gather ings. Now that pandemic restrictions have lifted, Salmon, Chapman and Martin all agreed it’s the time to get things going again. The choir has always been open to both men and women, and community members from Neepawa and surrounding areas, including Minnedosa, Arden and Eden. It will be an interesting ride over the next two years as the Trudeau Liberals try to escape the wave of opposition headed up and represented by Poilievre. The people have spoken loudly, with both a protest and a warning.

Not having brothers, I was the outside daughter. Thankfully! I learned how to roll down the lip of a gunny sack to facilitate the movement of grain or chop from pile to sack. It was such a simple thing and made the task easier and tidier. This led to learning how to quick tie the filled bag, with the knot that could be released with one tug. As my abilities increased, I was the one wielding the shovel and there was a skill to that as well. Filling the gunny sacks was short regular dig, lift and deposit movements. Using the shovel or pitch fork for moving manure required a slightly different set of move ments. Dig, lift, and throw, with a particular upward thrust that sent the manure soaring to land on the pile or stone boat. I don’t use these skills often these days, but have not forgotten any of them!

Life lessons were taught by word and example. Keep your word. If you say you are going to do something, then do it. Keep learning, always. Dad returned to high school and then on to university as an adult. He attended the same school as my sisters and I did. He was encour aged by the acting principle to get his final subject for graduation requirements, so he came to school for his classes only. After that, it was one year full time university, teaching positions and continuing education in summer school and evening classes. Dad was a veracious reader; history, poetry, world news and some westerns. Always learning, always open to ideas, not always embracing them. I like to think that his example for life learning is a legacy I embrace. The last course I completed coincided with my 70th birthday.

It’s a small thing, but why do we have to put down sex or gender on forms and surveys? If it doesn’t matter if you are female or male or another designation, why does it have to be asked on forms and surveys? Speak ing of surveys, and no insult meant to anyone, but do we really need to have Statistics Canada? If a company or government department wants to know something, perhaps they could hire a private polling firm to find out what they need to know.

In Poilievre’s victory speech, he issued a very catching phrase saying that Canadians don’t need the gov ernment to run their lives, they need a government who can run a passport office. He could have added to the list by including the immigration office, which is reported to be hundreds of thousands of applications behind. Canada Health is floundering in messaging and methodology. Why do we have provincial and federal food inspectors? Why can we not fix food inspection regulations so we can export food from province to prov ince? aving extra time to sit and think, my thoughts went back to some of the very basic lessons that my dad taught, instilled and enforced in me. Some are farm lessons, some life lessons and some faith lessons. Most of them serve me well.

I have been pondering some areas where we perhaps need to ask why governments do what they do.

The faith lessons that I learned from my dad are the ones that sustain me daily. These too, were taught with words and deeds. He was a lay preacher, a Sun day school teacher, a deacon and a wise man. With his ability to speak publicly with ease, with his store of life lessons and his depth of knowledge and understanding of the scriptures, dad needed very little prep time to offer insightful and encouraging reflections. For much of my life, I was reluctant to be comfortable with illness or death. I didn’t like the smell of the hospital, I didn’t like to think of the loss of a loved one. Dad took a very long time to die – the long good-bye. The disease that robbed him of his mobility also robbed him of his mem ory and awareness. As my family and I sat with him, he showed me that death is simply stepping through a portal, a passing through that valley of the shadow of death. This lesson has had the most lasting effect on me, and my life choices. Sharing this portion of his life journey has dispelled my fears. Thanks, again, Dad.

Although it is a provincial, not federal, area, why do governments register marriages? I can see that church or faith based organizations might want to record marriages, but why does government have to do that? Why do governments license marriage commissioners, priests and ministers? Any two people who wish to form a legal marriage can do so simply by living as a couple for six months. I am not hard set on the gov ernment registering marriages issue, but it seems like a waste of government time and resources.

Correction:

This is the epicenter for Paulinias’s work as he con cludes that sin and death are not different entities, they are one and the same. That the “Original Sin” was in fact the original death, the death of innocence, and the death of humanity.

Of all the life skills we learn in public school, team building and teamwork are, by far, the most important. Learning these skills helps us build friendships that last a lifetime, marriages that get better with age, thriv ing businesses, influential service clubs, and churches that consistently provide hope, help and healing to all who seek their aid.

For a frame of reference, this was after the first coun cil of Nicaea, which was in 325 CE, but prior to the second, which was in 787 CE. The purpose of these councils was to address heresies and segregation in the church. During this time in between the two councils, there was a large discussion on the “Original Sin,” whether or not because of Adam’s sin we have all sinned or because Adam sinned he introduced sin into the world.

Mark Twain said “cauliflower is just a cabbage with a college education” He was not far from actuality, as cauliflower is a member of the cabbage family. Cauliflower, na tive to the Mediterranean and Asia, was used extensively along with its sister vegetable broccoli. It was introduced to Europe in the 16th century, King Louis XIV of France was hooked on cauliflower and made it very popular in France. King Louis traditionally favoured cauliflower in a sauce comprised of lemon juice, nutmeg, vinegar, butter and salt. In India, it’s cooked with potato and onion to make a rich vegetable curry. “Kou noupidi kapama” is a traditional Greek dish made with cauliflower, onions, tomatoes, cinnamon, garlic, olive oil, salt and black pepper. In Israel, fried cauliflower is a staple in falafel stands. It is one of my favourite vegetables and I like it any way. Try these very easy to make cauliflower recipes and get hooked on it as Louis XIV did.

Riding Mountain: Mr. and Mrs. Nels. Buchanan, of Winnipeg, have received word that their son Pte. Mervyn Buchanan, of the Cameron Highlanders, was safe after the Dieppe raid.

Thereso... is no gruesome story of murder here, but there is a mystery. Who are the Browns? Where did they live? How did the tombstones happen on this property on Boundary Street in Neepawa? Where do these stones really belong if they are to mark the final resting place of one of the pioneers?

Brookdale: It is rumored that some people have adopted a new plan to rush their harvest. Well, the plan may not be very new– that is working seven days a week. Nor do we think under any consideration anything is gained by breaking the law.

The plot thickens when we observe the names on the tombstones belong to the family of Brown, and yet there is no record of anyone by that name having possessed or lived on the property.Thetruth is, the property changed hands many times in the early years until it was finally purchased by a chap named Irwin in 1892 when the land was subdivided. He sold the east half to Margaret Jean Irwin in 1907 and she applied for a torrens title in 1927.

An examination of the structure has found that there appear to have been no smoke detectors installed within the home. Guillas wants to remind people of how important smoke de tectors are. Top right: The rear of the house, heavily damaged by the fire. Bottom right: Destruction of the building began while firefighters kept their hoses trained on the blaze. This allowed the fire crews to better target the remaining flames and put the fire out for good.

F irefighters arrived to find a portion of house’s north end completely ablaze. Firemen with Nee pawa, as well as members with the Minnedosa Fire Department, were able to get control of the fire, though there were a few flare-ups over a period of two plus hours.

he was unable to officially confirm that number before speaking with the Banner & Press.Asfor the fire itself, Guillas said subduing it did present a challenge as its lo cation within the structure made battling it at times dif ficult. Guillas noted that it appears as though the blaze started on the ground floor, but spread to the attic very quickly. The house went up so fast because it was built with what is known as a balloon framing structure. In balloon framing, the studs extend the full height of the building, without any break in the stud. Because of that, the fire was able to spread to the attic at an accelerated rate.

Town of Neepawa fire chief Yves Guillas said that it appears that there were three people in the home when the fire began, with all of them able to escape the building safely. He has also been told that there were up to 10 people living there, but

Built in the late 19th century, this building was originally located on the St. Dominic’s Roman Cath olic Church property. It was moved to its current location some time in the 1980s. Though there has been some speculation within the community as to what is responsible for starting the blaze, the of ficial cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire commissioner.

“We had quite the blaze on our hands,” Guillas said. Once the members of the fire department were on the scene, Yves estimates it took them about two and a half hours to get the fire fully subdued. Unfortunately, there was nothing salvage able from inside the house

The Neepawa Lions Club just helped make an area resident a little bit richer last week, while raising funds for one of their local projects. The Lions were running a 50/50 raffle since May to raise money for the restoration of the Stoney Creek School at Riverbend Park. On Sept. 5, they drew the winning ticket, purchased by Stephanie McPherson. A total of $4,430 was raised through the ticket sales, meaning McPherson got to take home $2,215. Lions Club member Terry Smith presented McPherson with her winnings on Friday, Sept. 9.

One last farewell was given to former RCMP staff sergeant Mark Morehouse on the evening of Sept. 9. Many came to greet him at the come-and-go social, wishing him luck on his next chapter. Morehouse retired from the force earlier this year and is now acting as bylaw officer in Neepawa as he eases into full retirement.

He did not elaborate at the time of the interview as to who that player may be, but just before the Banner & Press publication deadline, it was confirmed that 18-year-old Mason Lobreau of Brandon has committed to the team.

“They have lost a few key parts on [defence] and in goal with Carson Cherepak, but I think they they still have a talented returning roster. This team was more than just three or four specific players, so this is going to be a tough start to the season,” stated Pearson. “But we’re still optimistic. After first practice with this group, I like the chemistry I was seeing out there. These players are getting comfortable with the system and I’m looking forward to seeing how things roll throughout the [opening] weekend.”

The Neepawa Titans are going into the start of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) regular season with lots of potential for success, but also a few very big question marks.

As for the actual drama on the ice, the Titans will start the season on Friday, Sept. 16 against the defending Turnbull Cup Champions, the Dauphin Kings. Pearson said that while Dauphin has lost a few key players from last year’s squad, they’re still a talented and dangerous opponent .

Neepawa Titans centre Parker Korman had himself a huge night in the final preseason game on the schedule, scoring three goals against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Titans would close out the night with a solid 4-2 win.

Head coach/GM Ken Pearson looks ahead to start of MJHL regular season

Titans head coach and general manager Ken Pearson said the 26 man roster will feature 15 players with previous junior “A” hockey experience. He said the returning players all look as though they took their off-season condition ing very “They’veseriously.allcome back in pretty good shape and competed very well [dur ing training camp]. They all understood what was expected of them coming into training camp and into the start of the season, which is great to see,” stated Pearson. While the pre-season results were not optimal (1-4 record), there were some unfortunate extenuating circumstances. Gavin Renwick, who was expected to be the starting goaltender for the team this year is recovering from an injured ankle. He will likely remain off the ice for a few more weeks. Peacefully, with his family by his side, Bud passed away at the Neepawa Hospital.

April 6, 1931 – August 29, 2022

This is also when Bud and Judie began to travel on hot holidays and discovered their favourite destination –Cabarete. Lifelong friendships were formed and both their Dominican ‘Familia’ and many Neepawa residents, who also came to be repeat visitors to Cabarete over the next 25 years, are friendships that always held a very special place in his heart.

Arrangements entrusted to Interlake Cremation & Memorial Services.

Bud returned home and worked for MTS in the Minnedosa/ Russell area and later, the Winnipeg MTS garage. While working for MTS in the rural area, he enjoyed many local dances and sporting events. It was at one of these dances in Birnie where he met Judie in 1965. When he was working in Winnipeg, he took his barber course and cut hair in Transcona. Bud and Judie were married on October 7, 1967. They enjoyed several years living in Transcona where Bud cut hair and Judie worked for Air Canada.

Known for his wit, charm and kindness, Henk was always an active member of the communities where he lived. Passionate about sports, he played soccer and coached hockey in northern Manitoba. He was a volunteer fire fighter and a member of the Lions Club for many years and a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Henk worked as a plumber and gasfitter most of his life, but he also liked to tinker and could fix just about anything.Henk and Paulina were married almost 64 years when Paulina passed away in February, 2021. But their beautiful love story lives on in the memories of their children, who still can picture the two gracing dance floors at community functions – and Henk’s famous moves donning his Dutch wooden shoes, and of course the winters the couple spent in Benidorm, Spain, living out their retirement dreams.

Bud was an avid reader, had an amazing memory for local history and loved storytelling. He loved country music, playing cards, singing & dancing, telling jokes, singing silly songs and dropping one-liners, sometimes just to see who was paying attention. His delivery often included a wink, a smirk and a twinkling eye. He had a green thumb and loved to garden, possessed a wealth of common sense and could fix almost everything.

A great light has been dimmed too soon. We are left with broken hearts, many hearts that felt the everlasting love of a woman who didn’t always give what we thought we needed, but gave us everything she had.

Hendrik “Henk” Beck, a loving father to nine children, a jokester and gentle soul, passed at the age of 91 at the Carberry Personal Care Home. Henk was born in The Hague, The Netherlands on April 6, 1931. He was the second youngest of seven children, so it should be no surprise he later had such a large family Growinghimself!up,Henk loved soccer and played well into adulthood. In the 1950s, Henk met Paulina, the love of his life. They married in 1957. In 1960, with a dream to provide a better life for their family, they immigrated to Flin Flon with four children in tow. In Canada, they had five more children, including two sets of twins. They moved many times over the years, mainly in northern Manitoba, and settled in Carberry in 1987.

Growing up, he loved to play ball with Birnie, which included many of his Birch cousins, and in the winter he played hockey and curled. His false teeth were courtesy of an unfortunate game in goal.

Bud worked on the family farm until 1961, when he and a few cousins moved to Yellowknife where he worked for a winter in the Public Works Department and then another winter at the Discovery Gold Mine. Although he enjoyed the work, his highlight was playing hockey with the Con Cougars. The following 2 summers were spent working at the Gold Mine, north of Whitehorse.

Interment of Henk and Paulina will take place in the Columbarium in the Carberry Plains Cemetery at a later date.

Bud’s love of sport carried on to his children and grandchildren. He coached Derrick in both baseball and hockey.Budwas elected to council for the RM of Rosedale in 1975. For the next several years, he served as Councillor, Reeve, Director on the UMM and MAUM. Many great friendships were formed during this time in Municipal

His love of sports continued, but now as a spectator. He rarely missed any of his grandchildren’s games, even if it meant traveling all across the province. He became the unofficial ‘Grandpa’ to many of the grandchildren’s teammates, too. He would spend entire weekends at the local rink cheering on the 6 grandchildren, neighbours’ children, friend’s grandchildren and enjoyed every game. He’d often settle in for the evening catching an Oilers game or curling game on TV.

Flowers are gratefully declined, but we ask that a donation be made in Bud’s memory to the Neepawa Palliative Care Unit, PO Box 1240, Neepawa MB R0J 1H0.

A devoted father to Remo, Brigitte, Mary, Henri, Skyler, Paul, Jean, Deanna and Debbie, Henk was an active father who spent time with his kids, from crosscountry skiing, fishing and skidooing to camping trips, and road trips across the country. A hard worker, he instilled strong values in his children, and his motto, was “it’s OK to get angry, but don’t stay that way.” He never harboured grudges and you always knew where you stood with Henk.Anyone who had spent any time at all with Henk knows what a fantastic sense of humour he had. If you ask him how many children he had, he’d count all nine of them on his fingers from oldest to youngest, but you may have gotten a wink and joke. “But I could have a few more I don’t know about.” He loved wine and beer and always asked what a guy had to do to get a cold beer when he was in the care home.

Loved and Kimalways,remembered(Yerex)

Laura was born at the Women’s Pavilion in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Raised by her parents Cliff and Terry Paggett, moving with the Air Force to France, Trenton, ON, and ending up back in Winnipeg, where she graduated from Silver Heights High School. She furthered her education and became a Health Records Technician, which she did until her retirement from Neepawa Hospital in the fall of 2020.Laura was a force, she could light up or take down a room in moments with her infectious laugh and straight to the point personality. She taught us to fear nothing, and not to hold back. Those who knew her well, knew she loved with everything she had, a loyal friend and fierce protector of everyone she cared about. She loved to dance, didn’t matter the music, as long as it had rhythm, she did too!

A private family service will be held.

In 1992 Bud and Judie sold the farm and moved to Neepawa in 1993. Bud sat on Town Council and a few committees while also working for John’s Electric and then the RM of Langford.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bookatz and Dr. Poettcker for their research and wonderful care. Special thanks also goes to all the nursing staff at the Neepawa Hospital for their kindness and excellent care.

Bud’s funeral service was held on Saturday, September 10th at 2:00pm at the Neepawa United-Anglican Church, with Reverend Chad McCharles officiating.

Bud was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren, and said that what he was even more proud of are the amazing friends they all have.

Friends and family are invited to visit Henk’s memorial page at interlakecremation.ca, where memories and condolences may be shared.

council approved a recent application to the Storefront Improvement Program they had received from Century 21 Westman Realty for $1,122.86 to go towards upgrades. Councillor Parrott in quired about Century 21 receiving money in the amount of $3,153 for upgrades earlier this year. Administration informed them that while this is the second request within the year, it still a combined amount below the $5,000 ceiling for any applications. As with any other applicant to the program, Century 21 Westman Realty must now wait two years before it could reapply.

The Storefront program has been in place for several years and covers up to 50 per cent of costs to downtown businesses related to exterior or cosmetic upgrades to their storefronts.

Second reading on the increase to the water and sewer rates within Neepawa was approved. The average increase for a residential customer will be around $12 in 2023 and 2024 and a $3 bump in 2025. The average cost for water and sewer in Neepawa even with the increase remains within the average compared to other communities in Manitoba. There have been no changes to the water and sewer rates since 2019.

A different contractor has also been brought in due to some work on sewer lining on some pipes on Vivian and Mill Streets, along with Walker Avenue. A storm drain on Whitmore Crescent has also been attended to. The Town continues to wait on its con tractor for some planned sidewalk repairs.

Samuel, strapping machine, excellent condition, just serviced. $500.

Earlier this year, several property owners on nearby Broadway Avenue expressed their concerns about the changes. They requested that if the area had to be rezoned, it should be zoned for just single family units (i.e. non-attached family houses). Council chose to proceed with the amendment as it had been originally devised.

He noted that clinic’s south entrance has had a new canopy installed. In the near future, they will also be replacing the roofing on the west side of the building. Parrott also added that thanks to the efforts of the recruitment committee, there will be a new doctor starting their practice within the next few weeks. More information on the new doctor should appear in a future edition of the Banner & Press.

Town Council meeting - Sept. 6, 2022

Manager of operations Denis Saquet updated council on the work being done on roads throughout the town with a pothole patcher machine. Large portions of Ham ilton, Mountain, as well as parts of First Avenue, south of the highway have been done. Because of the amount of work left to do, the contract with the company doing the patchwork was extended a few days.
