Jodie Byram seeking PC nomination for Agassiz riding
By Eoin Devereux Neepawa Banner & Press A person who is likely very familiar with all the day-to-day dealings that a Member of the Legisla tive Assembly (MLA) must navigate, has decided to make the jump into prov incialJodiepolitics.Byram, who has served as the aide/constitu ency assistant for Agassiz MLA Eileen Clarke for sev eral years, has announced her plans to seek the Pro gressive Conservative (PC) Party’s nomination in the riding. If successful, Byram would be the party candi date in the next provincial election, set to take place in October 2023. That election would decide who officially replaces Clarke as the MLA for Agassiz, as she announced last month that she would not seek re-election. Clarke will remain and serve out the rest of her term as MLA, however, until next year. The first candidate out the gate Byram is the first indi vidual to announce her intentions to seek the nomination, and she has already hit the campaign trail running. In a social media statement made on Sunday, Sept. 4, Byram stated that she intends on running a campaign focused on improving the lives of the people within the region and providing them a voice in provincial politics.“Iwas born and raised in rural Manitoba. From spending my early years growing up on a farm, to raising my children, I have learned the values of hard work, dedication and commitment. These are the same values that the people of Agassiz share, and it is why I am eager to represent them in the Manitoba Legislative As sembly,” Byram stated. “I know the importance of having a strong voice for

The locals made a fine showing in the afternoon, giving the visitors the short end of an 8-4 score. But in the evening game, the visitors put it over the locals 21-3. So it is not likely the Neepawa team will proceed any farther in the championship fight. It is more important to proceed with the threshing. Words are important
Pondering that, I had to agree, the hellos had been brief, in passing, little depth. For an individual who was used to being engaged in a conversation, their opinions sought and respected, these casual greetings were better than none, but not soul satisfying. A – “You’re looking good,” tossed over the shoulder, as it were. (That was my something shiny!) You’re looking good. What did one expect to see? Is that a way to open a conversation regarding recent health issues, or deep losses? I can’t say that I never use the phrase, and I can’t say that at times there is not a hint of incredulity in my voice. And there are times, in jest, that I use the second phrase– for your age. That second one is used with loved ones, safe ones, who know myBothintent.of these are in the same category as the pass ing– “How are you?” You know that one! A fleeting smile and a quick greeting, not even pausing to hear the answer, for fear of what we might really hear and learn! Ed had a comeback for that one. ‘How are you?’ ‘No good, thanks.’ Many people never heard the response and with a ‘that’s good’, continued on their way. It was a test to see if you wanted an answer and if you even meant the question! We are becoming more comfortable with social gather ings and it is giving me more opportunity to interact with folks I have not seen for a long time. I will ask– “How are you?”– waiting for a real answer. And if I blurt out–“You’re looking good,” I will try to mask my surprise!
Perspectives
There are opinions we won’t like and that’s fine. There are opinions that I hold that some people don’t like and that’s fine, too. I will defend their right to their opinion, all I ask is that they do the same in return

his has become a familiar greeting as we reunite with friends and family we have not seen for a few years. There is often an element of surprise to the tone as the greeting is offered. The other phrase often said and heard– “You look great for your age.” And just what the heck am I supposed to think when I hear that? What does my age have to do with my looks? Are you assessing the sparkle in my eye and the sincerity of my smile, or are you counting wrinkles and age spots!? Did you take note that my hair is combed or simply that my hair is white? The fact that I am upright and mobile become assessment factors? I look good for my age… did I look good for my age when I was two, 20,60? I get it. We say things we are used to hearing, We say things to fill an empty space. Some time ago, I was privileged to escort one of my senior friends for outings.

Just ask the farmers who live at the lower end of the Whitemud Watershed. Intensive and large scale farming has come under severe criticism. Fair enough, but I am old enough to remember that in the 1960s, we were assured the world would run out of food. While there are pockets of famine, most are related to the disruptions of civil wars. For the most part, while there may be some malnutrition, the majority of people have enough food. In Canada, we throw out more food than we eat. Related to the food topic, many people will argue the world has too many people. Not sure who they plan to kill off, but the reality is you can still fit every person in the world into a couple of large US states like Texas with plenty of room to spare. Then we have religion versus relationship. I think religion can be described as mankind reaching out to God and relationship is God reaching out to mankind. In very practical terms, mankind will never span the gulf to God, but God has no problem reaching man. That is, if mankind is willing. political views. We have had every thing from ultra-conservatives to liberals, socialists, communists and a few fascists thrown into our historical mix. Which one is correct? Or is a single one correct? Climate change! That’s the “hot test” topic on earth right now (pardon the pun). There are those who figure the world will end in a decade and others who feel climate change is nonsense. Where is the truth? On the topic of electric cars, my thoughts come to the surface pretty quickly. In rural North America, es pecially in the winter months, electric cars will not work for the foreseeable future. They are not yet feasible. We have heard a lot lately about water shortages. We have seen many images of lakes, especially in western United States, going dry. It may be in part to lower rainfall, but it can also be attached to increased usage of water for homes, manufacturing and irrigation. You can only dip out of the pail for so long and it will become empty. Any doomsayers about lake levels need to look at excess usage as well as possible climate change and differences in rainfall.
Western Manitobans are very familiar with wetlands and drain age. If there is flooding downstream, how often has it been due to exces sive wetlands drainage?

Populism is a much touted def inition of “popular” politicians. It seems that it’s almost always used negatively. Should it be? In order for a politician to get elected, they need to be popular, do they not? John Dief enbaker, Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Preston Manning were all populists. Is that a negative thing? Political parties, by definition, must have an agenda. Otherwise, how would a voter know what the party stands for? Yet, the word agenda is often used with scorn. Why is Somethat?people believe in capital punishment, some don’t. The topic has been debated for centuries. Capital punishment is common in the United States, non-existent in Canada. Does it deter criminals or Whennot? the committing of a violent crime ends in the death of the crim inal, is that OK or not? Political views are wide ranging. A study of western Canada, or even Manitoba, will show a huge array of
of that year working to improve my handwriting skills. I still follow the guidance I received that day; and while I now do much of my communicat ing by text, email or phone, the handwriting skills I learned in Grade 5 stand me in good stead whenever I must write a note in a greeting card, complete a grocery list or fill out a Client Intake Form for a medical appointment. Our Grade 5 teacher wasn’t satisfied with medi ocrity. She taught us that, “If something was worth doing, it was worth do ing correctly and it was worth doing well.” She also taught us that if we didn’t do something right the first time, we would have to find some time later that day (usually as part of our homework) to do it over. She was committed to excellence in everything she did and she expected the same from us. She didn’t expect perfection. She knew that was impos sible. But she wanted us to be the best people we could be and do the best work we could possibly do. She also taught us that if we planned our work care fully, any one of us could produce something that we could be proud of. We were shown how to outline a composition, write a first draft and correct errors in spelling and grammar so that we could submit a top quality final product for grading. Most of the time, she just graded our final copies. But every so often (when we least expected it), she asked to see everything I always chuckle (in wardly to myself, of course) when I receive a request for help that contains these words: “Your task will be really easy, and it will only take 10 to 15 minutes of your time.” I chuckle because these words bring to mind the second Most Valuable Lesson I learned during my time in public school: “There is no such thing as an easy task.” So-called “easy” tasks can quickly take on lives of their own and require far more time and energy to do correctly and to do well. The credit for this MVL goes to my Grade 5 teacher. Our class was to write a paragraph on a topic she gave us. As she was correcting my work, she called me to her desk. “Neil,” she said, “Your paragraph is excellent, but I can hardly read it. Your handwriting is sloppy; but I know that if you work on your penmanship, you can do much better.” I decided to take her advice. I spent the rest (outline, drafts, revisions, final product), just to be sure that we were following herAsinstructions.wewentthrough this process in Grade 5, we had no way of knowing that, seven years later, as part of our final exam in Grade 12 English, we would be given two hours to write an essay on a topic chosen by the Alberta Department of Education; and that the examiners who graded our essays would ask to see the outline, drafts, revisions and final product. Our Grade 5 teacher had pre pared us to face and pass thisSometest. of my Grade 5 classmates didn’t like go ing through all those steps just to write a 100 word paragraph. “It’s too hard,” some of them said. Today, we look back on those days and think: “So is life.” And we thank God for a teacher who had the courage to show us that with patience and hard work, we could overcome every challenge, especially those “easy” tasks that weren’t so easy.
My name is Karen Shindruk and I have recently resigned after 19 years as an Educational Assistant at Erickson Elementary school. I loved my job. Why did I feel the need to resign? Parents and grandparents have put a great deal of trust in the school system to educate our children. I want to acknowledge the many excellent teachers that have taught and are continuing to teach our children. Society has changed, but parents’ focus and priority is still their children. There have been substantial changes in the cur riculum in the last few years. When working in the school, I asked If parents were being informed of these changes. Administration re sponded by saying it wasn’t necessary. My biggest area of concern is the new gender-based curriculum. I have seen a lot of confusion among our children, and also a falling away of some of their academic skills and knowledge. As a parent and as an employee, I felt my beliefs and concerns were classified as being invalid. The cultural climate at the school became inhospitable and I felt I needed to resign. Others in the community have voiced similar concerns. If you, as a parent, now being made aware, have concerns or questions about the issues of gender-based curriculum, feel free to email me at kandrs4@hotmail.com.Concernedaboutthe future of our children.

With the recent announce ment from the Manitoba government that minimum wage will be increasing on Oct. 1, many businesses will be preparing for the change. Area chambers of commerce have shared that they are ready to help businesses with this increase in any way theyThecan.government stated that they will be raising the minimum wage from $11.95 to $13.50 in October this year, with another increase to $14.15 in April of 2023, with the ultimate goal to have minimum wage at $15 per hour by October of 2023. This increase is in response to the high inflation rate facing the province this year.
PHOTO BY KIRA PATERSON Pictured above are some the items from Somaliland that Cabdi Jaamac gifted to the Margaret Laurence Home. Some of the items included a wooden drinking jug, a milking pail, animal hide sandals, decorative beads, a wooden spoon, hand-woven mats and a wooden staff used to clear brush and debris from where a group would be setting up camp. The Margaret Laurence Home board hopes to create a display featuring these items for the public to see sometime in the future.

Margaret Laurence Home (MLH) board mem bers Brenda Ferguson and Blair Chapman took Jaamac and a couple of his friends from Winnipeg on a tour of the historic site. “At least three years ago, [Jaamac] reached out to us and he was planning a trip the following year, and the following year happened to be when COVID hit,” stated Ferguson, explaining that this visit had been several years in the making. It’s no coincidence that folks from Somaliland would be admirers of Laurence’s work. The author spent about seven years in that area of Africa, two in Somaliland and five more in Ghana, then known as the Gold Coast. “Her first four books were not about Manawaka [the fictional town based on Neepawa]. They were about Ghana and Somaliland,” explained Chapman. “Very early on in the conversation, [Jaamac] said to me that within a very short time, he and others felt she just captured some essential qualities of life there.”
In addition to knowledge and stories, Jaamac also came bearing gifts. He left about a dozen items at the MLH made in Somaliland that would be used in their day-to-day lifestyle there. From a hand-carved wooden bucket used for milking livestock, to animal hide shoes, to a multi-use wooden staff, Jaamac left quite the variety of items.
Margaret Laurence Home visitor emphasizes local author’s international connections
“He told me that when [Laurence] first went to Africa, she wasn’t well received, because she’s a white woman.
A recent visitor to the Margaret Laurence Home has brought new attention to the impact the Neepawa-born author made in her time abroad. Cabdi Jaamac, originally of Somaliland, Africa, came all the way from Bristol, England, where he currently resides, to visit Laurence’s childhood home. Jaamac is a huge fan of Laurence’s litera ture, so much so that he hopes to one day build a library in Somaliland named for the author.
Learning about Somaliland Chapman and Ferguson noted that both Jaamac and his friends seemed very excited to be able to visit the Margaret Laurence Home. But the tour not only allowed the MLH board members to learn about Laurence’s influence on the Somali-born visitors, but also about their lives in their home country.

Ferguson added that they learned that the camel herders could survive on consuming nothing but camel milk for about a month because the fat content is so much higher than cow’s milk.
Chapman and Ferguson noted that they hope to one day create a display featuring Laurence’s Somali-based books with these items included for visitors to see. Both MLH members noted that they really enjoyed talking to the Somali visitors, learning about their love of Laurence and some of the history and lifestyle of Somaliland.“Itwasawonderful experience,” Ferguson said of the visit.Chapman added, “Being in Neepawa, we always push the Manawaka aspect of [Laurence’s works], so to be opened up to that other aspect of her life as a writer, it made me want to do some more reading.”
But she immersed herself in the culture and became well loved by the community,” added Ferguson. One of Jaamac’s travel companions, Mohamed Robleh, actually grew up in the community in which Laurence lived.

Robleh shared about what he did in Somaliland before he moved to Canada. “He was a camel herder as a young man and we learned about camels and camel milk and how important the camel was,” Chapman related.

Welcome to the VIP Lounge Another interesting addition to the Yellow head Centre will be found on the arena’s east end, as a new VIP viewing lounge has been constructed. The space will be able to accom modate up to 30 people and can be booked for all home games. Pearson said this is also an idea the team has had for quite some time. “The work has been put in this year to get that idea going and turn it into reality. Again, Chisle [Construction] did the con struction and NeepawaGladstone Co-op donated the materials. And then John’s Electric did a lot of work too with the painting, the lighting and electrical side of things. So, it’s go ing to be huge, not only for our fans, but for fans of any notable events coming to the Yellowhead Centre, whether it’s the Men’s Prov incial Curling Champion ships, which are set to be here early next year, a high school game or whatever the case may be. It’s going to be a nice little feather in the cap of the Yellowhead to have an extra place, that could be considered a VIP lounge, that can generate a new revenue stream.”
The exact cost of the upgrades could not be veri fied, as a large portion of the materials and the work was generously donated by Chisle Construction, John’s Electric and the NeepawaGladstone Co-op. Pearson said the team is very appre ciative of those businesses’ support on the renovations.

Some finishing touches in terms of painting and furniture are still to be looked after for the space. It is expected, however, to be ready for the regular season home opener against the Dauphin Kings on Sat urday, Sept. 17.

In advance of the start of a new hockey season, the Neepawa Titans have upgraded their off-ice ac commodations for play ers and personnel at the Yellowhead Centre. The junior ‘A’ hockey club has just completed a major renovation to a large por tion of its dressing room space. The improvements in clude new storage facilities for team equipment and sweaters, which allows for the area it had originally been located to be opened up for other usage. That space has now been refur bished for an expanded weight room and lounge area for players. As well, the changes have opened up an access area for meetings and other team operations. Derek Pearson, the hockey operations assist ant and head trainer, said these upgrades are a big improvement from what was previously there. “Previously, the space just had not been utilized as best as it could have been and the board [of directors] had been talking about an expansion of the area for a couple of years and finding a way to better use the space,” stated Pearson. “So now we’ve been able to expand the second level and that work was done by Chisle Construction. They expanded the loft to a full second floor and added a full storage locker for us.”

The renovated dressing room area for the Neepawa Titans includes additional storage space on the main floor (above left picture) and a larger weight and cardio room in an expanded portion of the second floor (above right picture).

As hard as it is to believe, school bus drivers have reported vehicles passing the stopped school bus on its RIGHT side - the side where children enter and exit the bus.
Pearson added that board members themselves stepped up to do some of the finishing touches, such as painting the space and adding some shelving and lockers to the location. He added that from a trainer’s perspective, these improve ments are huge, because it allows easier and more secure access to valuable equipment. It also elimin ates some of the clutter that had been an issue on the ground floor of the dress ing room.

Much like the Winnipeg Blue Bombers winning the Labour Day Classic, Mark Kerkowich claiming top spot at the Rosebowl Champion ship seems to have become an annual tradition as of late. For the second straight year and fifth time in the last nine years, Kerkowich has earned the victory in the Neepawa Golf and Country Club’s (NGCC) annual Labour Day weekend tournament. As well for the second straight year, Ker kowich was also able to hold off the difficult challenge of Kolby Day in the match-play tournament. Kerkowich’s previous Rosebowl wins were in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2021. This year was the 60th edition of the NGCC Rose bowl Tournament. This competition is one of the most prestigious events on the golf calendar and consistently attracts premier players from all across western Manitoba. It uses the match play scor ing system, which consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point.

RURAL MUNICIPALITY OF MINTO-ODANAH
It is with heavy hearts but joyful celebration that we announce the passing of Marlene Grace Penno (nee Boerchers). She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at the age of 65. Marlene was born on May 25, 1957 in Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba to Herman and Helen Boerchers. She grew up in Laurier on the Boerchers family farm and was one of six children. After graduating from high school, she pursued secretarial studies at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, where Howard Penno swept her off her feet. Howard and Marlene were married on October 8th, 1976 in McCreary at Herman and Helen’s home. After living in Brandon for a brief time, they relocated to Yorkton, where Marlene worked in the Adult Education office in the Yorkton High School. On October 1st, 1979, they welcomed their first daughter, Carla Marie to their family. In 1982, they moved to Eden to open Penno’s Machining and Manufacturing, where Marlene was a full-time bookkeeper. On November 17th, 1982, they welcomed their second daughter, Rhonda Lynn. Soon after opening the shop, Marlene and Howard built the house of their dreams on a farm just outside of Eden, where they continued to raise Carla and Rhonda. After 27 years of running Penno’s Machining, Howard and Marlene sold the business and then in 2020 moved off the farm to Morden, MB to be with their girls and their families. The Boerchers family was always near and dear to Marlene’s heart. She enjoyed spending time with her family during Sunday dinners, time at Clear Lake and at the Penno’s cabin at Manipogo Beach. Marlene particularly enjoyed time with Beverly making appetizers, canning salsa, baking at least 20 loaves of bread to turn into 225 sandwiches for the boys in the field, all while keeping extra detailed and organized notes along the way. Marlene enjoyed her winter vacations down south in Mexico with her only sister, Ella, and brother-in-law, Len. Marlene was very active in helping out at church and camp. She enjoyed cooking the Thanksgiving meal at McCreary Gospel Church and continued that tradition at the Neepawa Baptist Church. This was where she helped with the Mom’s Morning Out program. Marlene also enjoyed helping out at Dauphin Bible Camp with camp clean up days and helping to cook in the kitchen. Dauphin Bible Camp held a special place in Marlene’s heart. Grandchildren were treasured by Marlene. She carried on the tradition of her dad by always having a well-stocked pantry full of treats for when the grandkids were coming. Marlene had fun getting down on the floor with the grandkids to play games and listening to their giggles and stories they had to tell. Marlene leaves to mourn her husband, Howard Penno, daughters, Carla Olusola and Rhonda Thomson; grandkids, Gabe, Kyra, Josie, Brielle and Micah, siblings, John (Michelle) Boerchers, Ella (Len) Mallette, Gordon (Lee) Boerchers, Jerry (Bev) Boerchers and numerous nieces and Marlene’snephews.presence was larger than life. If you knew her, you knew her welcoming spirit, sense of humor and love for teasing those she loved most. In honour of losing Marlene too early in life, we will continue to uphold her legacy through enjoying time at the lake, good meals shared together and lots of laughter and teasing. Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at Wiebe Funeral Chapel in Morden with a family interment at McCreary Cemetery on Monday, September 5, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marlene’s memory to Dauphin Bible Camp. Please contact the camp at 204-638-5568
