The 2017 SCBL Playoffs began on Wednesday, July 12 with all eight clubs vying for the championship. With the first round now completed the teams have been rebracketed with the highest seeded team (indicated in brackets) facing the lowest seeded club and will be a best-of-three format.

New player signings to Neepawa Natives Gladstone plays in Four more players have committed to the Neepawa Natives for the upcoming Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) season. The club has announced via press release the signings of forwards Brett Namaka and Jessie Gibbons, as well as defensemen Gabriel Comeau and Ben Hilhorst. Namaka played last season with the Winnipeg Wild, serving as the team’s captain and accumulating 57 points in 43 games. Natives general manager Myles Cathcart said the 18-year-old is a very good hockey player in all areas of the rink. “[Namaka] has a good eye for the net, works extremely hard and is defensively sound,” said Cathcart. “You don’t become the captain of the Winnipeg Wild without great leadership and character. He is a welcome addition to our dressing room and to the on ice product.” Fellow Winnipeg Wild alumni, Jesse Gibbons, has also committed his CJHL playing rights to Neepawa. Gibbons tallied 18 points for Winnipeg in 28 regular season games last year. Cathcart noted that Gibbons is a good energy player, with a solid skill set, who finishes his checks and does not take a shift off. As for defensemen Gabriel Comeau, the 17-year-old played last year with the Winnipeg Thrashers, registering 13 points in 44 games. Cathcart said Comeau is a skilled blue liner with great skating ability and an ability to anticipate the play. The fourth addition to Neepawa is Ben Hilhorst, a 17-year-old from Killarney. The defensemen played last season with the Pilot Mound Buffaloes of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). In

56 regular season and tournament games, he was able to accumulate 56 points.Cathcart said Hilhorst will be a multi-faceted addition to the blue line. “[Hilhorst] is a big strong d-man that takes pride in his defensive zone, but has an offensive upside. He sees the ice well, has a great first pass and plays very physical. He is hard to play against and he plays an honest hockey game,” stated Cathcart. These players, along with the other off-season signees, will all be vying for a spot on the Natives’ roster this fall, when the MJHL clubs training camp begins Aug. 30. MJHL news and notes Lanny Stewart, former sports reporter for the Neepawa Banner/mywestman.ca and soon-to-be former editor of the Westman Journal, has been named the marketing and communications manager for the Virden Oil Capitals. Stewart will be tasked with growing the club from several different angles – whether it’s the social networking aspect, branding, formulating game day operations and growing fan interaction with the club, along with continuing to evolve the team’s corporate partnerships into the coming years. Stewart says to have the chance to work for the Oil Capitals is an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. “I want to say thank you to [The Oil Capitals] for the opportunity. Leaving the Westman Journal was a difficult decision. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the editor’s chair, but I’m ready for this new exciting challenge and can’t wait to get started.” Stewart will begin his new role with the Oil Capitals on Aug. 8.

Vehicles from last years races ready to start there engines and hit the race track at last year’s Yellowhead Roadrunners Runway Drags.

By Kira McCormick-Adema The Neepawa Banner

Welcome to the Runway Drags!

The Yellowhead Roadrunners are always looking for new members with an interest in vehicles of all types. This year, at the club’s 17th annual Runway Drag Races, they are again giving novice racers a chance to test their skills on the track. While there will be some fast cars, the races are open to anyone, all drivers need to do is bring a vehicle, a helmet and be in time for the pre race orientation. Drivers don’t have to be pre-registered; they can register when they get there. The race is coming up on Saturday, July 29 2017 at the Neepawa airport. Bert de Koning, club president, says the races aren’t about who has the fastest car, but who has the most consistent time. How this works is the cars will race earlier that day and get a time for the distance that the drivers are comfortable with. Then, that time gets put in the window of their car and when they race in the afternoon, the drivers have to get as close to that time as possible. There will be no knockouts. The most consistent driver, regardless of speed, will win. The racers for this event are not just local, there are people that come from all over the province and even from Saskatchewan.

For spectators coming to watch the races, there will be food and drinks available, as well as stands for the spectators to watch the races. There will be an announcer to help the audience follow along with the action on the track. Races will depend on the weather and the rain day is Sunday, July 30. On race day, registration will start at 8:00 am and the races will start between 10:00 and 11:00 am and go until 5:00 pm. An exciting change for this year is there will be no featured cars; de Koning explains that between the members and other racers, there are already lots of fast cars on the track for spectators to enjoy. The Yellowhead Classic auto show, another event put on by the club, will be on Friday, July 28. The Roadrunners will also be hosting a charity barbecue at the car show. The barbecue and car show will run from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Neepawa Co-op Grocery Store parking lot, on Highway 16 in Neepawa.
