New Mustang: a faster horse

Allan Hyndman’s 1967 red Mustang sits next to the brand new 2017 model. While the new model is larger, the 50 year lineage is clearly visible.

By Ben Castle The Neepawa Banner Goldf inger, Thunderball, Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Fast and the Furious, I am Legend, John Wick, Need for Speed— the Ford Mustang is arguably the biggest automotive icon of the silver screen. The original Ford Mustang, launched in 1964 for the 1965 model year, created the popular “pony car” class, affordable 2+2 sporty coupes with long hoods and short rear decks. To commemorate 50 years of continuous production, Ford released an all-new, sixth generation Mustang for the 2015 model year. The cheap interior was out and also controversially, the live rear axle replaced by a fully independent multi-link rear suspension. However, this is the first Mustang to be officially sold globally and finally has the mechanical sophistication to compete with the best sports cars that Europe and Asia can offer. The driving experience All these practical observations are kind of missing the point though. This car is all about the driving experience. I was insanely excited about driving this car, as driving a V8 Mustang, not least a convertible, was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream and it certainly didn’t disappoint! The 5 litre V8 roars into life with a glorious rumble that is always present and never really goes away, whether you’re doing 30 km/h or 130! As you would expect, pick a gear and you have instant acceleration at any speed and the engine is very free-revving for a big V8 and happy to howl to the red line. The manual transmission has a nice and precise short-throw, but due to a very light clutch, can be quite difficult to drive smoothly at low speed. Kangarooing off the forecourt is not a good look, but personally, I would still go for the manual transmission, as it’s a nice shift and worth persevering with, as you learn to finesse your low speed gear changes. The past and future of the Ford Mustang.

Continued from pageB1 I can fully understand why some may prefer the more easy-going nature of the six-speed auto though and with steering-wheel mounted paddles, you can still fully exploit the considerable performance at the beck and call of your right foot. What might surprise you though is how well this car grips and puts its power down with no drama. I’m sure that you can provoke it into lurid power slides with the stability and traction control off, but this much power through just the rear wheels doesn’t have to be intimidating. For a car on 19 inch wheels and 40 sidewall tires, the ride is also remarkable. This car rides better than most nonsporting cars and actually deals with our patchy rural road surfaces really well. You get a bit more body roll and dive under braking than you would expect, but this encourages you to drive smoothly and feel the limits of the car. One minor gripe is that there is some wind noise from the roof at highway speeds and some wind whistle with the roof down. Rear visibility is also poor roof up, but you do get a standard backup camera. I recorded an average of 14.3 litres per 100 kilometres during my test, which isn’t going to win any green awards, but is on a par with a V8 half-ton truck and I was having a lot more fun! Up to 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres highway should be possible on this model and opting out of

History: The Ford Mustang was conceived and brought to production over an exceptionally short, for the day, 18 month development cycle, thanks to sharing many of its mechanical parts with the compact Ford Falcon. The name is thought to have come from the market research manager of the Ford division, a breeder of Quarter Horses, but may also have been named after the WWII P-51 Mustang aircraft. When launched, it caused a huge sensation, more than tripling its first year sales prediction and selling more than one million units in the first 18 months. Mustang downsized for the second generation in 1974, even going down to four cylinder engines and due to declining sales, Ford nearly pulled the plug on it in the 1980s. However, the Mustang soldiered on and a successful fifth generation redesign of 2005 took styling cues from the original Mustang and relaunched interest in the car. the Performance Package would certainly benefit fuel economy. Excellent value for money Mustang starts at a bargain $26,398 for the well equipped V6 Fastback with the six-speed manual transmission. Add $1,500 for the automatic transmission and a $1,000 package adds a rear spoiler, power driver’s seat and 18 inch wheels. The four cylinder turbo (Ecoboost) is actually the upgraded engine with more power and torque, combined with better fuel economy and costs $3,000 over the V6. If you want the V8 (GT model) though, you’ll need to shell out an extra $9,000. You also get uprated brakes, an engine oil cooler, a decklid spoiler, electronic line-lock to allow burnouts and launch control with the manual transmission. The $5,500 Premium pack, available with both Ecoboost and V8 (GT) engines, adds selectable drive modes and more comfort, entertainment and trim features such as leather seating. The convertible is only available in base V6

and Ecoboost Premium and GT Premium specs. Budget $5,000 to $5,500 more for the convertible, depending on spec. Finally, the fastback only GT350 and GT350R offer more power and upgraded brakes, suspension and drivetrain if you intend to take your car on track regularly, but you’ll need to budget at least $20,000 over a GT Premium for these limited-edition models! The “base” V6 coupe offers excellent value for

money. Even with the optional package and an automatic transmission, for less than $30,000 you have a fantastic looking, fast, fairly practical and decently equipped sports coupe. The Ecoboost Premium also looks like a very

fast and well-equipped car for the money and if you’re daily driving it, should offer reasonable fuel economy too. However, in my opinion, if you’re going to spend the extra, you’ll want the V8 (GT) and while you’re at it, the optional Performance Package to give you the fullon muscle car experience. It won’t be a cheap car to run day-to-day, but it will have character in spades and make you smile every time you drive it. Fastback or convertible? Again, if it’s your daily drive, the fastback will be quieter on the highway, cheaper to buy and a bit more practical. If it’s your summer toy however, un-

doubtedly being able to put the roof down adds an extra dimension to the experience. So, in any spec, the 2017 Mustang offers strong performance for the money and the latest model adds more power, handling finesse and refinement to the already enticing Mustang recipe. This car now offers as much performance and heritage as European favourites such as the Porsche 911, for a fraction of the price and in the process of driving it, makes you feel like a movie star. It’s difficult to put a price on that and if it’s a car that you’ve always promised yourself, try one out, it’s better than ever.

Canadian auto journalists make their top picks for 2017

By Ben Castle The Neepawa Banner

Car of the year category winners First up, in the sports/ performance car category, we have the new 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport. This sports compact features a 1.6 litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine, with 201 horsepower, offered with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch (automatic) transmission. Starting from $24,999, Elantra Sport offers a good driving position and ergonomics, good visibility, comfort, ride, fuel economy and refinement, low emissions and most importantly, excellent value with a long list of standard equipment. It was a convincing win for the Elantra Sport, with the almost twice as expensive Ford Focus RS and Fiat 124 Spider in second and third places. In the large premium car category, the all-new 2017

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Volkswagen Alltrack picked up a convincing win as the “Car of the Year”

Buick LaCrosse narrowly won out over the all-new Volvo S90 and MercedesBenz E-Class. LaCrosse starts from $35,645 and offers standard V6 power, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the option of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, more European luxury car styling, a quality interior, competitive fuel economy and low emissions. It’s also worth noting that you can get a fully loaded LaCrosse Premium AWD for the price of an entry-level S90 or E-Class, which both get four-cylinder turbocharged power as standard. In the premium/sports performance car category, the new BMW M2 beat the all-new Mercedes-Benz C63 S AMG Coupe and the heavily updated Porsche 911 C4S. The BMW M2

may lack some firepower compared to the Mercedes or Porsche but starting at $63,500, it is less than 70 per cent the price of the Mercedes and less than half the price of the Porsche! Based on the compact 2-Series Coupe, the M2 is the latest in a long illustrious line of rear-wheel drive BMW M Division performance cars and features a 3 litre, sixcylinder twin-turbocharged engine with 365 horsepower. The M2 beat the other two cars for interior space, comfort and access, interior ambiance, cargo space, emissions and with a decent level of standard equipment, value too. Best new small-car was the all-new 2017 Hyundai Elantra, taking over from last year’s winner the 2016 Honda Civic. These two cars continue to be the top

compact choices for consumers and the new Elantra impressed the judges with low emissions, excellent safety, a smooth ride and transmission, an abundance of standard features, impressive interior space and visibility and starting from only $15,999, excellent value too. It’s testament though to the top quality of new compact car offerings for 2017 that only three points lay between the top placed Elantra and the second and third placed

However, it features distinctive styling and a raised ride height and at $35,295 comes in just one very wellequipped trim level.

Utility vehicle of the year In the small utility vehicle category, the 2017 Subaru Forester beat the heavilyupdated 2017 Ford Escape and all-new 2017 Kia Sportage. Forester is available with a 170 horsepower, 2.5 litre, four-cylinder engine, with either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission or an uprated 2 litre turbocharged engine with 250 horsepower and a CVT transmission. 17th ANNUAL

PRESENT

Four days, 65 journalists, 34 vehicles, 1,200 test drives. Welcome to Testfest 2017! Every year, a large group of Canada’s top motoring journalists from the professional association of Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) get together to test drive and evaluate the latest new or significantly improved vehicles making their debut to market. Each vehicle in its class is compared back-to-back on the same roads, under the same conditions, on the same day, to ensure objective evaluation. Each vehicle is rated subjectively by each tester on a scale of 0 to 10, in terms of styling/appearance, quality, occupant environment, noise, vibration and harshness, performance, vehicle dynamics, subjective value and interior ambiance but also objective data, such as acceleration, braking performance, cargo space, fuel economy, emissions and safety features. When the data has all been compiled, each category of vehicle has a top pick and then the category winners are re-assessed to come out with a car of the year, utility vehicle of the year and also a green car and green utility vehicle of the year. So what vehicles did AJAC pick as their favourite new vehicles for 2017?

all-new Chevrolet Cruze and Subaru Impreza . If you’re in the market for a new compact, all three are worth a look and the Subaru also benefits from standard all-wheel drive and the option of a hatchback (as does the Chevrolet). In the large car category, the new Volkswagen Alltrack beat the all-new 2017 Chevrolet Malibu and 2016 Kia Optima. This vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen and features a 1.8 litre turbocharged engine with 170 horsepower, combined with a six-speed twin-clutch (automatic) transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

New owners for Onanole Home Hardware Cats TNR preparing

for Canada Day

Submitted The Neepawa Banner On May 27, Cats TNR held our Spring Into Summer Mega Sale and Community BBQ at the Yellowhead Center. We had 50 vendors and crafters from Neepawa, Minnedosa, Brandon, Carberry, Portage, Lac du Bonnet, Dauphin, Ste Rose and places in between! We'd like to thank everyone who came out to support our fundraiser and enjoyed some shopping, prizes, yardsaleing and/or enjoyed lunch with us! A big thank you to the sponsors, board members and volunteers who made this event possible by donating products, services, time, muscles, musical talents and/or baked goodies. It takes a lot of good hearted people to make such a successful day for the kitties so thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Hope to see everyone next year May 26, 2018! On July 1 we will be joining in the Town of Neepawa's 150 festivities with a pancake breakfast from 9-11am down at Riverbend Park. We'll be serving pancakes, sausage, and a beverage. We will also have live music and a cake raffle. Last year, the turn out was outstanding and exceeded our expectations and we unfortunately ran out, so this year for the big 150 we are preparing for 600! Bring a lawn chair and come out and start Canada Day celebrations off right with a delicious breakfast generously sponsored by local businesses. If you'd like to get in on the action and volunteer a few hours please contact Brandi at 212-3115 Cats TNR is a Neepawa-based charity that works to help alleviate the stray and feral cat population, by using a trap, neuter, return program, as well as a rehabilitate and adoption program for sociable felines.

By John Drinkwater The Neepawa Banner On June 15, a change of ownership occurred at the Home Hardware store in Onanole. The new owner is Owen Connolly, who also owns the store in Dauphin. He said, “I’ve been a dealer for 34 years. The one Dauphin covers 27,000 sq.ft. Onanole is 8,000 sq.ft. With Clear Lake and RMNP nearby, the traffic flow during the summer is incredible. It’s

a great store and we’re blessed to be able to buy it. My daughter, Brandice and her partner Chris will manage the business and I will help them out during the summer season. I have another daughter, Whitney, who manages the store in Dauphin, which is only an hour away, so sharing inventory will be no problem. Our real challenge is staffing. We have seven employees and we could certainly need four more.”

B8 NEEPAWA BANNER JUNE 30, 2017

Continued from page B4 All Foresters benefit from Subaru’s excellent symmetrical all-wheel drive system. Forester impressed with its combination of good visibility, interior space, comfort, off-road capability, braking, fuel economy, low emissions and strong safety. The large utility vehicle category saw the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacif ica minivan beat the new 2017 Mazda CX-9 threerow crossover by just one point! Pacifica starts at $36495 and is the stylish replacement for the Chrysler Town and Country. It gets standard V6 power with a nine-speed automatic transmission, a luxury interior with luxury features, as well as excellent interior and cargo space and excellent ergonomics, refinement and ride. The Mazda CX-9 is a stylish and worthy alternative to the Pacifica, if not quite as practical. Finally in the premium utility vehicle category, the new mid-size SUV, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 4MATIC narrowly beat the all-new Buick Envision and Cadillac XT5 mid-size luxury SUVs. Starting from $45,150, GLC is surprisingly affordable for a vehicle bearing the three-pointed star. No doubt fishing into the options list will soon bump this price up substantially but for the money, you get sophisticated styling inside and out, top quality, refinement and ergonomics and good performance, handling and braking combined with a smooth ride. If you so desire, more power is available, as is a four door coupe body style.

Top picks for AJAC Testfest 2017

with the sporty dynamics and low running costs of the Volkswagen Golf compact car. Combined with the individual styling and excellent interior quality, driving position and ergonomics and a comprehensive standard equipment roster, this was a convincing win for the Alltrack and a reminder that despite recent troubles, Volkswagen still makes excellent vehicles! Thanks to low emissions and strong value, safety and consumer appeal, the new 2017 Subaru Forester also chalked up a convincing win as AJAC utility vehicle of the year.

Green car and green utility vehicle of the year The criteria for green car and utility vehicle of the year were slightly different. Scoring focussed on “greenness”, fuel economy/ range/emissions, sales potential, consumer appeal, value and the overall car of the year evaluation. One company, Toyota, dominated proceedings, having been the pioneers of hybrid technology for the last 20 years and offering hybrid versions of many of their vehicles. The all-new 2017 Toyota Prius starts from $27,190 and offers fuel economy as good as 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city. This is significantly better than thatGet offered a by the Chevrolet Malibu and Kia Optima

FREE

hybrids, while also undercutting them in terms of price. Prius is also spacious and well-equipped– it’s no coincidence that many urban taxi f leets consist exclusively of Priuses. In the city, Prius is king and even the best diesels can’t touch them for fuel economy. Chevrolet, Kia and Subaru also get an honourable mention for their fuel-efficient, conventionally-powered Cruzes, Malibus, Optimas and Imprezas. Another Toyota, the RAV4 Hybrid is the AJAC green utility vehicle of the year. Sharing its 2.5 litre four-cylinder motor with the conventional R AV4 (Canada’s bestselling compact SUV in 2016), the electric motor boosts power from 176 to 194 horsepower. Starting at $34,455, you’ll pay around $5,000 more spec-for-spec over the equivalent nonhybrid RAV4. If most of your mileage is highway, then your fuel economy gains will be relatively low, but with as low as 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres combined, these are 36 per cent and 25 per cent gains respectively. Quite a compelling package then when you consider that the secondplaced Subaru Forester is no more economical than the non-hybrid RAV4 and you’re getting the power and performance gains too.
