Messages of holiday greetings
Message from Robert SopuckMP Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa As your Member of Parliament, I wish everyone in the Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa Constituency, “Best Wishes for the Christmas and Holiday Season”! Christmas is a time for us to reflect on what is truly important: our families, our friends and our communities. As you celebrate this wonderful time of year, take the opportunity to count your blessings and reflect on Canada’s good fortune, rejoice in the memories of the year past, and look forward with hope to the days ahead. The holiday season reminds us to reach out to those who may be less
fortunate and who may be living with hardships. It is important that we all make an extra effort to help our neighbours who may be in special need. As we look back on this year, we can be thankful for the great prosperity we have as a country, even though the global economy remains fragile. Canada can be proud of being a model for other nations and being considered as one of the world’s best countries to live in! We can be proud of the key position our nation has filled in supporting the development of values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law in other
countries that are facing important challenges. We are extremely proud of the men and women of our Canadian Armed Forces and other law enforcement personnel, who are instrumental in protecting us from the violence of terrible regimes and everyday crimes. Please keep them in your prayers, not just during this Christmas season, but throughout the New Year. On a personal note, I thank you for your support and confidence to represent our Constituency’s values in the House of Commons. My goal, as your Member of Parliament, is to ensure that the
government recognizes the values of the towns, rural communities and farms that make up the riding of Dauphin-Swan RiverNeepawa. Whether it is by speaking in the House of Commons on your behalf, or putting forth your interests to the many Standing Committees, I have enjoyed working on your behalf. I will continue to defend our resource industries and the rural way of life as the “Critic for Wildlife, Conservation & Parks Canada”. My wife Caroline and I wish you and your family a truly blessed and peaceful Christmas season, and a healthy, happy 2018!
Message from Eileen ClarkeMLA Agassiz As your Member of the Legislative Assembly for Agassiz constituency, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy holiday season. Let the holiday season be an opportunity to step
back from day to day routines; spend time with loved ones and cherish those moments; to renew friendships and strengthen those special bonds. As each household celebrates traditional customs
serve and protect this great country. I thank all of those who give from the heart throughout the year and make a difference in the lives of others in our communities, in our province and our great country. From my home to yours, I wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year. All the best for 2018!
with love, hope and peace lets remember how fortunate we are to live in this wonderful province of Manitoba. We are truly blessed with an array of cultures and traditions in this province and have so much to be thankful for. This holiday season take a moment to share, care and be compassionate for those less fortunate and let us not forget to honor the men and women who
Merry Christmas Light a Candle of Love

Tova’s dog biscuits Everyone loves cookies but dogs may be the most appreciative recipients of all! For your dog’s stocking, get your kids to help make these yummy biscuits, as they can help stir, roll and cut them out. I have a cutter that is shaped like a dog biscuit but you could use another shape or cut strips out with a knife. You will need to save your bacon fat as I am sure that is the secret ingredient that dogs love. Tova’s dog biscuits 1 package dry yeast 1/2 cup warm water 1 tsp. sugar 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 cup rye flour (substitute whole wheat if you do not have rye) 1 cup Red River cereal 1 cup corn meal 2-3 cups white flour 1 Tbsp. beef soup flavor 3 Tbsp. dried parsley 1 Tbsp. salt 1/2 cup bacon fat 2 eggs 3 cups beef broth Dissolve sugar in warm water and add yeast. Set aside to rise. In a large bowl add the whole wheat flour, rye flour, Red River cereal, corn meal, 2 cups of the white flour, beef soup flavor, parsley and salt. In the microwave, melt the bacon fat, stir in to the eggs and broth. Add to the flour mix. If you need more flour, add from the remaining cup of flour. Form dough into a ball. Roll out pieces of the dough on floured surface until 1/2 inch thick. Cut out desired shape and place on very lightly greased cookie sheets. They can be close together as they will not spread. Bake at 350° for 45-55 minutes. Leave in oven for several hours or overnight so they will dry out. Makes a large batch.

18 ideas for making holiday memories Counting down to Christmas Day means many different things to people across the globe. Although families likely have several different traditions they anticipate each year, it can be fun to incorporate some new merrymakers into the festivities. Here are some festive ideas to include in the days leading up to Christmas — a special family calendar of fun finds. 1. Annual memento: Have the kids or adults make one new handmade ornament each year. This way the tree is always evolving, and everyone can track milestones. 2. Cookie day: Devote one day to making Christmas cookies. Invite friends or family members over. Distribute some cookies to elderly neighbours. 3. Holiday classic: Spend a night in and watch a classic Christmas flick you’ve never seen before. Streaming movie services often
put classics and obscure titles into rotation during the holiday season. 4. Christmas concert: Host a gathering of children where they can sing or perform their favorite tunes for an audience. Take it on the road to a nearby nursing home. 5. Dine out: Take a break from cooking, shopping and hosting and stop into a restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. How to succeed with your New Year’s resolution While it’s difficult to gauge just how many people make New Year’s resolutions each year, various factors suggest millions of people resolve to improve their lives each January. Television segments devoted to healthy resolutions and discounted memberships are just two of many indicators suggesting resolutions are popular and potentially big business. As popular as making resolutions may be, reports indicate that they’re more popular to make than commit to. For example, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report indicated that 80 per cent of resolutions fail. So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help.
• Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal. • Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men
and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal. • Don’t be shy. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you’re also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer incite and/or advice, which can prove invaluable. • Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally im-
portant to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such

The origins of some beloved holiday traditions Christmas time is here. The presents are being purchased and wrapped. The stockings will soon be hung on the fireplace mantle. Mistletoe is pinned above the front entryway, and poinsettias add rich color to home decor. Tradition is integral come the holiday season. Throughout the month of December, traditions fill people’s days and comprise the many reasons why individuals decorate, celebrate and dine the way they do this time of year. But few may know the origins of some of the most beloved holiday traditions. Christmas stockings The Christmas stockings of today may be a byproduct of various traditions. One such tradition dates back to a Dutch custom in which children would leave shoes full of food to feed St. Nicholas’ donkeys, and then St. Nicholas would leave small gifts in return. Another origin story of Christmas stockings
can be traced to the 12th century, when nuns would leave socks full of nuts, fruit and tangerines for the poor. This is why some people still put tangerines in Christmas stockings. Christmas tree Christmas Trees are everywhere this time of year. The use of evergreen trees predates Christmas and is associated with the pagan festival of Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying and giftgiving. During the winter solstice, green branches served as a reminder that spring would arrive anew. Germans are credited with first bringing evergreens into their homes and decorating them. Santa Claus Santa Claus’ origin story can be traced to St. Nicholas, a Christian bishop who lived during the fourth century. St. Nicholas was very generous and gave away his fortune to help
the needy. He also did various other good deeds. St. Nicholas became infamous and began to be known by various names around the world. The Dutch called him Sinter Klaas, which was eventually transformed to Santa Claus. The jolly persona came later when 20th century advertisers — especially the artists responsible for Coca-Cola ads — portrayed Santa in a red suit with a big smile. Mistletoe Mistletoe is hung in doorways, and couples who stand beneath are
encouraged to share a kiss. The tradition of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient Druids. Mistletoe was thought to bring good luck to a household and ward off evil spirits. The custom of kissing under mistletoe can be traced to England. Originally, a berry was picked from the sprig of mistletoe before the person could be kissed. When all the berries had gone, there could be no more kissing. Christmas bells Church bells ring for many special services,
including Christmas mass. During Christmas midnight mass in the Catholic Church, the altar bells may be rung while the priest says the “Gloria.” Bells are part of caroling, and jin-
