IS THERE A BETTER SEASON TO LIVE IN THE AUSTIN AREA?

SHAWN LIVELY

Not only is the weather becoming bearable and patio dining and lounging becoming common, but the events season is upon us and the winter holidays aren't far away. Combine that with the appearance, at long last, of one of Austin's most sought-after personalities within the pages of our magazine, and it becomes easy, with Thanksgivng mere weeks away, to give thanks to the city that gives so much to her residents. So, we at Austin Lifestyle Magazine would like to give thanks, like so many of his adoring fans, for Matthew McConaughey. Humble, gracious and inspiring, he took time to illustrate just how he maintains his casual coolness and disarming charm with a simple reminder to "just keep livin'." We'd like to thank the fall season for allowing the return of stylish boots, jackets and scarves to our regular wardrobes. Summer wear is fun and flirty, but we're overjoyed to welcome the combination of colors and textures that fall's layered looks make possible. And we're thankful to our Fashion Editor, Edie Henry, for showing us not only how we can look chic for the season, but how we can make sure that our beloved pets can follow suit (and tie). We're thankful for football season, and legends like Chris Ogbonnaya, who never forget where they're from. And we are equally thankful for the right makeup and beauty tips from Rochelle Rae that make sure your look holds up over hours of cheering on high school, college and professional football games. We have to give thanks, too, for simple pleasures like fried chicken and whiskey, and for their local purveyors, who are making a name for themselves in the national and global spotlight. We say thanks for events – oh so many events – that have us going from La Dolce Vita to A Christmas Affair and getting into all of the great galas in-between. We are grateful to have such a lively staff, with great friends and creative contributors who make the job easy, even when deadlines loom, as they always do. And we cannot give enough thanks for you, our readers, who invite us into your homes and lives and accompany us as we continue to discover the best of everything in Austin. But, mostly, we're thankful for our health and the well-being of our loved ones, and for the fact that, day after day, year after year, we are privileged to call this great city our home.

North Austin Can Rejoice With Launch of New P. Terry’s Location

BY JENNIFER PUTTERMAN Warning: reading the following may lead to major burger cravings. In the midst of the rising popularity of burger joints, P. Terry’s remains one of the best in the city. In late June, the chain opened its seventh location in North Austin at MoPac and Parmer Lane. “Given the success of our first location, it only made sense to continue our expansion to provide our guests more locations to enjoy the P. Terry’s experience,” said Patrick Terry, owner of P. Terry’s. Whether a cheeseburger aficionado or a meticulous vegetarian steps in the aquamarine-painted door, P. Terry’s accommodates any customer. All of the products are made from natural ingredients, including cheeseburgers with an all natural angus beef patty with Land O’Lakes cheese; chicken burgers made from boneless, skinless breasts of all natural chicken ground in-house; and veggie burgers made with brown rice, crimini mushrooms, black beans, oats, onions, cheese and fresh parsley. A unique menu switch-up for customers seeking a “healthier” route is requesting a bunless burger, which comes with all the fixings, but is served on a lettuce wrap. On the other hand, if patrons are looking to splurge, the milkshakes are legendary. Vanilla will always be classic, but the double chocolate and caramel are beginning to steal the show. Dessert is always a highly recommended addition, no, upgrade, to any meal. Even the early risers can start their morning with a quick stop at P. Terry’s. Breakfast begins at most locations at 7am with organic egg burgers, breakfast potatoes and banana bread, as well as beverages that include freshly squeezed orange juice and freshly ground Ruta Maya organic dark roast coffee. The establishment takes great pride in their quick service, while still offering a high quality product. Customers come at any time of day and, regardless of the line at the register, can expect to sink their teeth into a juicy burger in minutes. Hands down the best part of the meal is finishing the massive pile of fries that attempts to hide away in its wax paper bag. You can never go wrong when upgrading to a combo meal, especially since the French fries are made from all natural fresh Idaho Burbank potatoes. P. Terry’s will never sacrifice cost and time for taste. They hand scrub and cut each potato in the kitchen fresh each morning. It’s the dedication to the little details that sets P. Terry’s apart from other “fast food” burger spots. Not only is P. Terry’s serving up excellent burgers, fries and shakes, it is also dedicated to giving back to the community. So far, the burger joint has donated over $286,000 to local organizations like Dell’s Children’s Medical Center, Capital Area Food Back, Season for Caring and Austin Child Guidance Center. Keeping up with their growing clientele base, P. Terrys’ newest location expanded the dining room to 3,500 square feet with a 1,000 square-foot outside area. Designed by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and inspired by mid-century car culture, the newest restaurant will also feature a double drive-thru. Look for the signature aquamarine and red banner at 12301 N. MoPac Expressway or call 512-719-4810. For updates, go to pterrys.com and follow on Facebook @P-Terrys and on Twitter @Pterrys. ALM

THE A * LIFE

BY EMILY R. PELLERIN We’re a city of hedonists and homemakers; of epicureans and entrepreneurs. Fitting right in are a couple of sweet northern souls, Arielle and Jesse Henson. Originally from Massachusetts, the husband and wife duo blindly set sail toward the south, dreaming of warmer weather and whatever else the lovely city of Austin could offer them. Little did they know, the fickle Fahrenheits were not their only greeters; the gracious culinary climate of Austin was just as friendly! The team of two and their shared sweet teeth climbed aboard the foodie bandwagon, seeking a niche market of edibles that has been pretty much unprecedented in the Austin scene: deep fried, true-to-the-south goodness,

14 austinlifestylemagazine.com

boasting a menu that could whet the appetites of those who love sweets and savories. The Hensons started up Fried and True, a food truck parked at the East Side Filling Station on the corner of East 6th Street and Waller. The truck is decked out like your grandmother’s kitchen and its chef, creator and all around peoplepleaser, Arielle, matches the truck-front’s profile. She greets with a beckoning smile; she wears gingham, capped-sleeve dresses; and she can fry up a mean batch of cornmeal-breaded fried homemade pickles! Dishes include homemade vanilla-batter funnel cake, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, topped with powdered sugar; deep fried mini cinnamon buns drizzled with

homemade vanilla icing; infamous strips of chocolate candy bacon, thick-cut and dipped in a chocolate candy shell and garnished with smoked salt; homemade buttermilk and honey corn dogs fried in honey-sweetened batter; classic double fried, hand-cut French fries made from Texas potatoes; and even deep fried sandwiches. The menu goes on to offer other goodies, just like your mama makes ‘em— only crispy fried! Fried and True is open late on weekdays and even later on the weekends. To check out their digital menu, swing by friedandtrue.com. And to taste the scrumptious, indulgent edibles that this homey food trailer dishes out, visit them at East 6th Street and Waller. ALM

Collections offered at the store include Religion, Sam Love, As Is, Dust and Drag, Blank NYC Denim, Threads for T hought , Midnight Rider, A s Is , Idylwild and Catherine Abston Designs. Items vary in price enough to allow even the thriftiest shopper to find pieces in the store. Headdress also has a pretty radical selection of musician tees and tanks. Headdress doesn’t have a specific shopper in mind, but rather prefers offering a variety of pieces so everyone

can find something they like in the store. They recently started carr ying men’s clothing as well so guys can make sure they get in on the action. The reception the store has gotten in the few months since it opened has been far broader than they hoped. A Departure From the Norm

Pillow Talk BY CHRISTIAN RYAN CRISWELL Steel Feather Interior Design Studio opened nine years ago when owner Jamie Gauthreaux desired to share her style and vision with others to help beautify their homes. As a Dallas native and University of Texas art grad, Gauthreaux has always had a passion for textiles and soon found a way to share her creativity with clients. In April, a pillow boutique and storefront for her signature pillow line was fluffed to life. The Moroccan Collection 2013 was inspired by a trip to Africa two years ago, where the hand-woven Moroccan textiles and unique architecture piqued her interest. Using the dynamic colors as inspiration, she created a line of handmade pillows, ottomans and lighting fixtures that can breathe life into any space. Gauthreaux’s goal for future collections is to take a trip each year to a different country overseas to inspire and influence each new line. Gauthreaux is also devoted to giving back, and a portion of every signature pillow purchase will be pumped into the community via Austin’s CTC International LIFEline. The collection is presently on view by appointment only at Steel Feather Interior Design Studio and Pillow Boutique, located at 1605 West 35th Street in Austin. The pillows are listed on Etsy.com/shop/steelfeathers, with the ottomans and lighting fixtures coming soon. For more information, browse Jamie’s residential interior design portfolio as well the entire Moroccan Collection 2013 on her website steelfeatherinteriors.com.

If you passed by the corner of 5th and Guadalupe during the month of August, you may have noticed a swanky new lounge coming to life. This isn’t your typical lounge, however. The Departure Lounge blends a coffee/tea/wine menu with an innovative approach to booking travel – making the act of booking travel as immersive, engaging and enjoyable as the trip itself. While travel is a key focus at Departure Lounge, Founder and Director Keith Waldron has taken great care to ensure that his brainchild isn’t a one-trick pony. With a full offering of coffee, tea and pastries, the Lounge feels more like a Starbucks (albeit a very posh one) in the morning, with the downtown crowd stopping in for their morning jolt of caffeine. Table service starts at 4pm for those interested in sampling from the extensive wine list or indulging in light bites like cheeses, truffles, scones, muffins and more. Don't be surprised, however, if that iced Australian Lamington infusion has you dreaming of Sydney. On the travel side, prospective travelers create “traveler personas,” or traveler profiles, either on the Departure Lounge website or at the Lounge itself. Those personas are then used by staff advisors to help provide guidance on the types of activities that would be a good fit for your excursion. Whatever your travel style, the team at Departure Lounge can help bring your dream vacation to life. In the short time it’s been open, the space has caught the eye of quite a few event planners. It’s simultaneously open and intimate, modern without being cold, and just feels like the kind of place you wouldn’t mind spending a few hours. Much of the international décor you’ll see at Departure Lounge was sourced from Ten Thousand Villages®, a nonprofit fair trade organization that sells handcrafted products made by disadvantaged artisans in over 35 countries. Whether you’re in the market for a vacation, international décor, or just craving coffee, wine or a quick bite, head by Departure Lounge and see what all the buzz is about. Departure Lounge is located at 311 West 5th Street, Suite 102 and online at departurelounge.com.

The Best Facial Ever is the eponymous service now offered by Hiatus Spa + Retreat. Employing a range of technologically novel beauty products, including the Clarisonic and NuFace, Hiatus offers an 80-minute service of blissful pampering. The service begins with a foot soak and salt rub, loosening the tensions that slink into our bodies unannounced and dwell until, upon their absence, we finally remember they were never supposed to be there in the first place. While one lies recumbent in a private retreat room, the aesthetician proceeds to cleanse the facial skin using a Clarisonic brush. The Clarisonic is an electrically powered exfoliating brush, whose cleansing power is known in cosmetological and dermatological milieus to utterly transform skin. After the Clarisonic cleanse, clients have a choice of plant peels, which energize the skin in preparation for the non-invasive facial to come. A slow, light massage precedes the one of a kind NuFace procedure. The aesthetician spreads an intensive hydrating masque across the face and rubs it clean with the NuFace instrument—a noninvasive, uplifting micro-current technology that improves your facial structure in a way that has been analogized to Pilates. I can attest to the miracle of Hiatus Spa’s new facial retreat service. Not that I’m droopyjowled, but I certainly don’t have the tautest of countenances. After my NuFace treatment, however, my cheekbones were subtly more prominent, my eyebrows were sharper and slightly lifted, and my under-jaw seemed to have spontaneously “sucked in.” In fact, my aesthetician showed me one half of my face after the service had been applied, and we marveled at the definition in my brows and cheeks before I hastily implored her to service the other side! Hiatus employs the credo that with natural, regular treatments like massage, skincare and body treatments comes overall health. The spa has incomparable pricing for its services, and offers a unique membership program for its guests. For more information on Hiatus Spa + Retreat, head over to the Gables 5th Street Commons at 1611 West 5th Street, Suite 155, or visit hiatusspa.com.

Seattle & The Olympic Peninsula

Washington’s Great Northwest Adventure BY MARIKA FLATT AUSTINITES LOVE VISITING SEATTLE. WE ENJOY GOING TO ANOTHER PART OF THE U.S. THAT IS SIMILAR TO OUR OWN GREAT CITY (CASUAL DRESS, DOWNTOWN SCENE, OUTDOOR ADVENTURE) BUT DIFFERENT ENOUGH TO FEEL LIKE VACATION (COOLER WEATHER, DELICIOUS SEAFOOD, WATERFALLS). BUT THE NEXT TIME YOU VENTURE TO THE GREAT NORTHWEST, ADD THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA TO YOUR ITINERARY, SINCE IT’S JUST A FERRY HOP ACROSS THE PUGET SOUND FROM SEATTLE AND OFFERS A HOST OF GREAT TRAVELING OPPORTUNITIES.

In the first of this two-part travel series, we’re going to explore some highlights of the Northwest that include culinary delights and outdoor escapes. In our next installment, we’ll explore crossing over the Canadian border into British Columbia (primarily Vancouver and Victoria). SEATTLE AREA STAY

I’m a fan of finding accommodations outside the big city. When considering my options of places to stay in Seattle, I thought of the W Hotel downtown and also Edgewater, both fairly centrally located. However, I settled on The Heathman Hotel, nestled in nearby Kirkland (just 12 miles from Seattle) because I’m a sucker for the quaint small town feel. I love walking the streets of a village, trying out local craft beers, visiting shops and, in this case, walking along the waterfront. Kirkland is just a quick 20-minute drive from Seattle, but it feels hundreds of miles from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Kirkland’s Heathman is a boutique hotel, small and informal. I recommend springing for a corner suite with an outdoor patio that overlooks the town. One of these suites can adjoin a room with two doubles if you’re traveling with kids. This is an ideal set up because the kids have their own space, you have a living room with a kitchenette in the middle and a king room on the other side next to the patio. Guests at The Heathman can visit the small market behind the hotel, load up on wine and snacks and enjoy dining on the suite’s outdoor patio, which makes for a relaxing evening (especially when you leave triple-digit temps in Austin and enjoy evenings in the 50s-60s in Kirkland). EAT

The Heathman’s restaurant, Trellis, can be considered a mix between fine dining and casual bistro. You know you’re in the Northwest when the little ones can order

26 austinlifestylemagazine.com

salmon from the kids’ menu. The chef prepared a delightful monk fish served with broccolini and paired with a crisp chardonnay. In 2011, Sunset Magazine named Trellis one of the best places for farm-fresh food; you taste that distinction with each bite. Other dining options within walking distance away include George’s, a casual café a few blocks from The Heathman where you can grab a cold beer and a delicious burger. And, for breakfast, you can run across the street to The French Bakery and indulge in a chocolate croissant with coffee. PLAY

The Woodland Park Zoo in the heart of Seattle is a real treat for the entire family. And, there’s an app for that! You will want to download the free zoo app prior to your arrival and plan your route, the shows you don’t want to miss and any special exhibits you’d like to see. You can also use it to discover the Hidden Zoo mobile tour that leads the way to many of their most unique, though less known, fun facts and experiences. The zoo opened the new Bamboo Forest Reserve exhibit recently and currently has twin sloth bear cubs, a trio of jaguar cubs, four lion cubs, a young wallaby joey, a quickly-growing red-crowned crane and incredible programming to enjoy. The "elephant poo paper" making station in the African Savanna is a fun experience. They also offer elephant feeding daily in their Tropical Asia area for a small fee and Zoomazium is packed full of entertainment for the kids, including puppet shows and storytelling. While in Seattle, you can also enjoy shopping at Pike’s Place Market and load up on fresh veggies and seafood. Since we had access to a kitchen, we purchased salmon (from the famous spot where the guys throw the fish around over your head), crabmeat for homemade crab cakes, tomatoes and basil for Caprese salad, broccolini and lots of fresh fruit. You can also purchase local souvenirs like homemade flame-worked glass bead

necklaces by Isis Ray. Take a short drive out of town and experience Snoquamie Falls, a true wonder of nature. At the lookout point, you can gaze at the majestic waterfall. Another fun day trip is into the little town of Woodinville (@ WineWoodinville), just 8 miles from Kirkland, which features several wineries, including Darby Winery. This little town is a mecca of highquality wines, which are representative of the Washington grape scene. If you’re heading towards Woodinville, you can stop off at Juanita Beach Park just north of Kirkland and take a scenic drive up around the bay (you can take this route to get into downtown Seattle, too).

STAY

With the Olympic Peninsula being surrounded by water, use this opportunity to stay some place with a great view. Most accommodations in the peninsula are small and many are family-owned, such as B&Bs. The east side of the peninsula is referred to as the Hood Canal route and Port Ludlow is on a small cove about halfway down. The Inn at Port Ludlow Resort is a three-story yellow wooden inn sitting on the water next to a marina and could have been plucked right off the coast of Maine. The inn is part of the Port Ludlow Resort that also features a golf course, waterside vistas and a yacht club, a beach club and small cottage homes. The New England-style inn features guestrooms that are extremely spacious, with equally large bathrooms and übercomfortable bedding. While staying at the inn, you have the option of using the 22 miles of trails around Port Ludlow, kayaking, beachcombing or playing golf. You can also take a short hike from the inn that goes through the town center and across to Ludlow Falls. EAT

The crown jewel of the Inn is its waterfront restaurant, Fireside. The two dinners at Fireside will dance in my head like sugarplums at Christmastime. Chef Aaron Austin works his magic and delivers little slices of heaven with every course. For our first dinner at Fireside, I enjoyed mushroom risotto and salmon. Each bite melted in my mouth and was perfectly paired with a Washington state chardonnay. Even the soft bread with olive tapenade was a special treat! For our second day, we participated in Fireside’s Farm-to-Table dinner series. In the afternoon, we were given a basket, $40 in farm bucks and a map to three nearby farms. The first farm was Spring Rain, where Farmer John gave us an informative tour of the chickens and rabbits living on the 26-acre certified organic farm and the crops that are harvested daily. We gladly purchased raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, heirloom tomatoes and basil with our farm bucks. Then, we stopped by a food stand for green beans and carrots. And, lastly, we visited FinnRiver farm and cidery where we purchased zucchini squash and broccoli and were able to taste their delicious hard cider and fruit wines. Who knew apples could make such a splendid concoction? FinnRiver features nearly a dozen ciders, all very different, like varieties of wine (Texans will love the habanero chili cider). We took our basket of goodies back to Chef Aaron Austin at Fireside and two hours later, we sat down to a six-course meal that he prepared

from our bounty of fresh produce. This meal will go down in my travel history book as one of the best dinners! Each course was perfectly paired with a local wine and we savored carrot bisque, zucchini tart filled with crabmeat and grilled halibut with broiled broccoli. It was like being treated to our very own Food Network reality show. PLAY

While on the Peninsula, there are myriad opportunities for day trips, including Port Angeles, where you can dine at the delicious New Day Café, see the restaurant from the movie Twilight where Bella and Edward had their first date (Bella Italia) and sip delicious wines at Olympic Cellars winery. The winery is owned by former Texan Kathy Charlton and boasts one of the best Zinfandels I’ve tasted. You’ll also find fun novelties at the winery’s store like wine purses (which I’ve never seen before). If you’re leaving Port Angeles heading back to Port Ludlow, the next town is Sequim, the North American lavender capital. You can drive by one of the many lavender farms, such as Purple Haze, and enjoy the fragrance from your window. Take time on this day trip to wander through nearby Port Townsend, where they filmed An Officer and a Gentleman. This Victorian seaport town boasts a cute little main street with boutiques, ice-cream parlors and an old movie theater whose popcorn you can smell blocks away. If you have time, visit Fort Warden where you can experience a glass beach. A trip to Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula can expose you to several different environments: the culture of bustling city life, a hot FOR MORE INFORMATION: spot for vineyards, the beauty of The Heathman Hotel nature and the historic seaports Kirkland, WA of days gone by. THE DEAN'S LIST

BLUECOAT GIN BY STEVE DEAN

W

hen everyone else wants to zig, smart people zag. And when it comes to developing new products and taking them to market, Andrew Auwerda knows how to zag. The University of Maryland graduate has already created and sold a successful cosmetics brand (Tony and Tina) and has since moved on to develop and manufacture another consumer product also sold in a beautiful bottle. Introducing Bluecoat Premium Gin, made right here on American soil at the distilling company he created from scratch. It’s called Philadelphia Distilling and this year they are scheduled to ship out over 10,000 cases of premium gin to over 40 American states. Recently, I took a trip all the way up to the city of brotherly love to visit Philadelphia Distilling and speak with its founder and President. Although Mr. Auwerda (pronounced oh-word-uh) makes running a distillery look very easy, there’s actually nothing easy about it. It took him almost six years of lobbying and fighting to make his distillery legal. But the fight paid off—Philadelphia Distilling is now the first legal microdistillery in the state of Pennsylvania since prohibition. And it now boasts a Pennsylvania limited distillery license bearing the code “001.” Not too shabby, considering most people said it could never be done. The only trouble is, the word “never” is simply not in the vocabulary of this particular entrepreneur. Mr. Auwerda identified a very interesting void in the spirits world. There were far too many new brands of vodka being launched and too few new brands of gin – especially during the wide-spread return of prohibition-style cocktails, most of which are gin-based. So he teamed up with a couple of partners, wrote a business plan, gathered up some investors, designed and built a pot still and started a distilling company in 2005. He then shipped his first batch of Bluecoat cases in 2006. The name “Bluecoat” refers to the nickname for the American soldiers during the revolutionary war. And, with so many “redcoat” gins hogging up all of the shelf space in the American liquor stores, creating a top quality, American-made gin seemed to make perfect sense. As a self-proclaimed marketing and packaging guru, Mr. Auwerda designed the beautiful Bluecoat bottle with an intentional Ralph Lauren-like, all-American look and feel. He wanted to give it a package so attractive that his upscale consumers would not only want to try it, but be proud to share it and recommend it to their friends and colleagues. And now for the good stuff -- the product

itself: Bluecoat Gin is craft-distilled using organic juniper berries, giving it earthy, spicy juniper notes. When combined with a proprietary blend of organic American citrus peels and other organic botanicals, the result is a gin worthy of the term “American Premium.” Bluecoat is distilled in a custom-built, hand-hammered copper pot still. A true batch distillation, the process calls for extremely slow heating of the pot, which allows for maximum separation of alcohols. Impurities are discarded, leaving only the purest, most flavorful alcohols. The result is a gin that is intensely smooth and invigorating. There are no additives, and the botanicals are all organic and batch distilled. If you are not a gin fan, you owe it to yourself to at least give it a try – you will most likely be surprised, if not converted. And, if it makes you feel better, Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave it number one in a ranking of the top 10 American spirits. My first try was from a chardonnay glass – perfectly neat; and yes, I asked for more. Try that with your runof-the-mill gin. The target consumer for Bluecoat is the free-thinking young professional, (similar to a craft-beer consumer) interested in the organic botanicals and attracted to something that not everyone else has. In addition to the beautiful packaging, much of the success of the brand can be attributed to key awards and endorsements from within the spirits industry, not to mention the influential bartenders who are proud to recommend the product and love to tell the brand story. The signature Bluecoat bottle is easy to find in almost every liquor store in Texas and sells for around $28. Mr. Auwerda hopes to get sales of Bluecoat up to 55,000 cases over the next three years. Future plans are also underway to move the distillery to a larger facility located in downtown Philadelphia, close to several bars and music venues across from the SugarHouse Casino. The new location will also allow public tours and product tasting, which fits in perfectly with the modern consumer’s desire to learn more about spirits and the craft distillery process. For the record, Philadelphia Distilling has also recently created and launched two vodka brands (Penn 1681 and The Bay), an absinthe brand (Vieux Carrè) and a whiskey brand (Shine). You see, Andrew Auwerda is not afraid to go after the big boys—not even the entire British Empire. He’s got his finger on the pulse of American spirits, and that’s why he’s on The Dean’s List. Steve Dean is the founder of The Dean’s List, and a Creative Director at 160over90, a Branding Agency with offices in Philadelphia, Newport Beach and Gainesville, Florida.

A Clean Sweep BY RORY PATRICK MCNEILL

‘TIS ABOUT TO BE THE SEASON THAT LEADS TO THE REASON FOR COUNTLESS RESOLUTIONS FILLED WITH SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO HANDLE THE LOVE HANDLES SO GENEROUSLY GIFTED TO YOU DURING THE HOLIDAYS. FOR YEARS I HAVE DANCED THAT FINE LINE BETWEEN DECADENCE AND DEPRIVATION, TILTING MY HEAD WITH MY NOSE TO THE AIR ON THE FABULOUS FARE OFFERED AT COUNTLESS SEASONAL GATHERINGS. THE CALORIC HANGOVER LEFT ME WITH ONLY ONE REMEDY—HOURS OF YOGA, PILATES AND BALLET BARRE AS IF TOMORROW I WAS STRUTTING DOWN THE CATWALK IN A SWIMSUIT COMPETITION.

Then, I discovered the concept of a cleanse. I found myself in the presence of the guiding force that would transform my entire way of thinking about what I put in my body. The universe presented me with an amazing woman so knowledgeable, so personally affected by the results of cleansing, that it not only altered the direction of her life, it motivated her to build an empire dedicated to enhancing the lives of countless followers. That woman is our city's very own Kim Love. And, on the cusp of launching her Austin-born company nationwide, I, her hair artist, sat down with the Queen of Cleanse to explore her journey and find out how she discovered the truth behind the relationship between our bodies and their source of regeneration: food. KIM LOVE

WHY IS CLEANSING A CRUCIAL STEP IN TODAY’S WORLD AND HOW DO WE DECIDE WHAT THE BEST METHOD IS?

Cleansing restores balance to our physical bodies and our minds. We are bombarded by toxins that are present in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the pesticides and GMO's in our food and even the clothes we wear. A cleanse can come in many forms, from water fasts and juice fasts to food-based cleanses. My preferred cleanse is a food-based cleanse with loads of alkalinerich vegetables, fruits and juices. If cleansing is used as yet another form of crash dieting, results will be temporary, just like with all diets. But a cleanse, especially a food-based cleanse, can serve as a launch point for creating truly sustainable habits with life-changing effects on how we feel. We can use a good food-based cleanse to discover which foods our bodies love as well as those that hold us back. This makes an enormous difference in our ability to be energized throughout our days while also losing weight and maintaining weight loss.

inflammatories like ginger and turmeric. Fruits and sweeter vegetables are better in a smoothie form instead of a juice because fiber slows absorption of sugars which minimizes blood sugar spikes and subsequent crashes. So, the basic guideline is to blend sweet fruits and vegetables into smoothies, and to use heartier veggies to juice. As an aside, a couple of common juice ingredients have been found in our program to be some of the most inflammatory for our clients, including: citrus and nightshades (tomatoes and jalapeños, for example). Thirty percent of our clients find citrus creates issues ranging from weight gain, low energy and irritability, to skin rashes and seasonal allergies. The key is to know thyself because if citrus works well for you, it’s a wonderful addition for vitamin C content and liver detoxifying properties. WHAT FOODS/HABITS SHOULD BE AVOIDED DURING A CLEANSE?

WHY IS FRESH JUICE SUCH A GOOD THING AND WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD BE IN A JUICE FOR MAXIMUM CLEANSING BENEFITS?

Juicing compresses pounds of vegetables into a toddy of nutrients. With the fiber removed from the vegetables, these nutrients are mainlined into the cells. The best ingredients are nutrient dense and alkalizing veggies. Kale, spinach, cilantro and parsley are some of our favorites. We love the addition of anti-

34 austinlifestylemagazine.com

We recommend starting with the basics, which work well for most people, and then layering on top from there. Omitting acidic foods and replacing with alkalizing ones immediately allows our bodies to begin detoxing. Acidic foods include: coffee, processed foods, animal proteins, sugar and (gasp!)...alcohol. Fret not, it’s only 10 days. We also recommend omitting the most common sources of inflammation

to find your food intolerances. Gluten, of course, is a big one everyone knows about. But there are many others including citrus, tomatoes, nuts, soy and dairy, just to name a few. WHAT DURATION OF TIME SHOULD VARIOUS CLEANSES LAST?

Our bodies require foods to thrive. An occasional juice cleanse of three to five days works for some people. Our favorite approach to cleansing is a foodbased one. You can go full-blown alkaline for 10 days and this will also allow you to retrain your body to crave healthier foods on an ongoing basis. When we change our daily diet to one that works for us, we call this finding our Food Fit. Finding our Food Fit grants us the opportunity to more efficiently process what we encounter in our daily lives. Generally, this includes minimizing acidic foods (processed foods, sugars, dairy, factory farmed meats, etc.), nixing foods that are inflammatory for your body and eating in balance for you. HOW OFTEN SHOULD ONE CLEANSE?

Food-based cleansing can be done as frequently as once per quarter if it’s balanced with proteins. A 24-hour juice fast can be done as often as once per month. Any juice cleanse of longer duration is best limited to once or twice per year if it’s used as a launching point to healthier habits rather than as a rapid weight loss diet. Eating in alignment with your Food Fit and adding more alkaline foods allows your body to cleanse every day, so you can more efficiently process the toxins you encounter. WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF CLEANSING?

There are so many benefits. You feel amazing. You experience increased energy, improved digestion, glowing skin, stronger nails, better sleep quality and weight loss, to name a few. Food-based cleansing is sustainable. Further, it leads to long-term, life-changing benefits rather than a fleeting few days in which you feel better. As for the emotional-physical connection, LoveLife’s clients connect the dots between what they eat and how they feel with our unique two-phased method and Food Tuning Tracker. By day 10, most of our clients notice big differences in their irritability and stress levels. They feel and look amazing and they know how to keep this going well beyond a “cleanse.” HOW COULD YOU INCORPORATE CLEANSING INTO HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES?

When you become addicted to feeling and looking amazing AND you know exactly which foods elevate your vitality and which foods sabotage it, you can then make empowered choices. Maybe you find that wine makes you sleep fitfully. Maybe cheese makes you sneeze and bloat. Or, maybe one spritz of

For more beauty tips from Rory McNeill, visit roaraustin.com/rory.

citrus packs on two pounds and you are exhausted the next day. With this awareness comes several options: maybe you opt to choose a vodka/soda instead of wine; maybe you skip the citrus but you decide a few sneezes and little bloating makes the cheese worth it! The difference is you know exactly how to get back on track afterwards. The holidays are often about indulgence. With this Food Fit knowledge you can indulge consciously. Know which foods you can avoid to keep your energy levels at their highest and to minimize the holiday weight tilt. Know and accept your party schedule and then choose Sunday through Wednesday as days to get back on track. Alkalize with lots of veggies, juices and whole foods. DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR WORK AS REDEFINING PEOPLE'S FOOD VOCABULARY?

So many of us have lived our lives confused about which diet is right for us. Should we be vegan? Should we be Cavemen? Are grains good or bad for us? Gluten? No gluten? The reality is that there are basics that work for most of us—cutting out sugar and processed foods and eating more veggies. Beyond these basics is where the real magic lies. We’re all unique and when we discover our particular nuances, we have the opportunity to create life-elevating experiences. I do believe that in the next few years this level of empowerment will become standard. We will move away from food dogma into knowing what’s right for our bodies. We will have created a “culture of cleanse” that is sustainable and satisfying on every level. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME THE NEW DELICIOUS ?

I love that question! Super alkalizing green veggie juice and high quality chocolate should be the new standards for delicious! Seriously, very dark (80%+) high quality chocolate with minimal sugar and no additives is leagues from most chocolate out there. A couple of my favorites are Dick Taylor’s Fig Chocolate out of Humboldt and Cocoa Pura Chocolates Dark Cacao Nibs which can be found at Whole Foods and the Austin Farmers' Market.

SOCIAL REGISTER THE CONTEMPORARY AUSTIN

La Dolce Vita Food and Wine Festival This past July, The Contemporary Austin launched a new identity (formerly the merged AMOA-Arthouse) to emphasize a distinctive vision and mission in establishing a reinvigorated exhibitions focus. In the later part of September, The Contemporary Austin inaugurated its ambitious new program of commissioning and exhibiting the works of today’s leading contemporary artists by installing them in its 9,000 square foot museum building in the heart of downtown Austin, The Jones Center, and at its 12-acre lakeside estate, Laguna Gloria, featuring the dynamic works of Liam Gillick and Marianne Vitale. Raising vital funds for The Contemporary Austin’s education programs, the 24th La Dolce Vita Food and Wine Festival, presented by Merrill Lynch, returns this fall with a dynamic lineup of awardwinning chefs, select Austin restaurants and prized wineries from across Central Texas. Held along the beautiful shores of Laguna Gloria, La Dolce Vita provides guests with an opportunity to sip and savor special culinary presentations on Thursday, October 24 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. “The education programs at The Contemporary are the buildingblocks for our engagement with the Austin community,” states Louis Grachos, the Ernest and Sarah Butler Executive Director. “It is important to note over 11,000 students of all ages are reached annually through our various education programs at The Contemporary Austin.” During La Dolce Vita, tastemakers will groove to the Flying Turns, a five-piece ensemble spinning the most eclectic of vinyl. Renowned restaurants, with the likes of celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey’s Searsucker Restaurant and Larry McGuire’s beloved Josephine House and Jeffrey’s, bring a sophisticated bite to tantalize guests palates along with Austin’s favorite Ranch 616, helmed by the colorful Kevin Williamson while Ramen Tatsu-ya and Kome offer Japanese chic to La Dolce Vita. The highly anticipated laV, set to open later this fall, will preview its cuisine for those who have not yet visited the new establishment’s temporary food truck located inside Hotel Vegas and the Volstead Lounge.

Recognizable wineries from Pedernales Cellars wines to longtime favorites such as Becker Vineyards and McPherson Cellars bring their multi-award winning wines to elevate guests’ senses at this vibrant event. Newcomer 4.0 Cellars from Fredericksburg will also add to the lengthy list of reputable wines at La Dolce Vita. Multiple wine sampling booths with national and international flair are carefully curated by Twin Liquors. The Contemporary is a museum without walls, meaning art education programs go beyond the two unique locations featuring a variety of outreach efforts. An extensive mural project by teen students was recently unveiled at Cisco’s Restaurant and their outreach program, Art About Town, works with a wide variety of community partners, such as the Dell’s Children’s Hospital and the Austin Public Library. The Art School at Laguna Gloria educates a wide range of students, ranging from youth to adult, with over 100 classes offered three times a year. La Dolce Vita will take guests through a festive evening while enjoying “the sweet life,” as they experience and taste the creations of over 50 bright culinary teams and wineries, each presenting an evocative taste of their establishment. Tickets for La Dolce Vita are available for $150 per person for general admission and $200 per person for the VIP Cocktail Lounge and are on sale at thecontemporaryaustin.org/events/la-dolce-vita. Laguna Gloria is located at 3809 West 35th Street. AUSTIN PARK N' PIZZA EXPERIENCE NOVEMBER 23

On Saturday, November 23, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® is hosting the St. Jude Give thanks. Walk.™ in 75 communities nationwide, including Austin, to support children f ighting cancer and other deadly diseases with pioneering research and exceptional care. This is the second year for the Austin walk. This year, we are anticipating more than 500 walkers, and with your help, we hope to raise $50,000 to support the mission of St. Jude. The local St. Jude Give thanks. Walk. will take place at Austin's Park n’ Pizza Experience and feature family friendly activities from 9:00am to noon. Registration is free. Additionally, anyone who fundraises $100 or more will get a free pass to spend the rest of the day at Austin’s Park n' Pizza Experience. Many participants set personal fundraising goals and have been asking friends and family to donate. These efforts support the lifesaving mission of St. Jude. Last year, nine-year-old Bella Mercado was a standout among the walkers. She organized the “Hugs for Carter” team in honor of a family friend, three-year-old Carter, who was being treated at St. Jude. Her goal was $1,500 but she almost doubled the amount by raising $2,890. The young philanthropist asked for donations in lieu of gifts at her ninth birthday party to help reach her goal. Her generosity did not go unnoticed. Bella was recognized as the top fundraiser at the St. Jude Give thanks. Walk. and The Senate of the State of Texas sent her a resolution to commend her for her dedication to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is registered for the 2013 event under the same team name to keep the support for Carter going. When asked about her fundraising and participation in the St. Jude Give thanks. Walk, Bella answered: “Why wouldn’t we fundraise? Those kids have cancer and that is how we help.” Unlike any other hospital, St. Jude relies on funding from everyday people to help support its lifesaving mission of finding cures to save children battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Because of donations, families never receive a bill from St. Jude

for treatment, travel, housing or food because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. National Partner Teams of the walk include New York & Company, AutoTrader.com and Brooks Brothers; National Volunteer Teams include Delta Delta Delta, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Iota Phi Theta; local sponsors are Family Heritage Life Insurance and local volunteers from Epsilon Sigma Alpha will be out supporting the event. Local media sponsor KGSR and on-air personality Kristen Kurtis will serve as emcee for the event. The St. Jude Give thanks. Walk. serves as the official kickoff event for the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign, which unites retail and corporate partners, as well as celebrities, during the holidays. Since opening more than 50 years ago, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries. The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life. Join that mission by visiting stjude.org or following St. Jude on facebook.com/stjude and twitter.com/stjude.

alumnus and former University of Texas football player, Chris Ogbonnaya currently plays receiver, running back and special teams for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns recognized Chris’ athletic talent and commitment to the team and re-signed him to a two-year deal earlier in 2013. Despite the demands of a professional football career, he had a chance to get away from practice and talk to Austin Lifestyle Magazine. What is your training schedule for the off season? I wake up and hit the weight room for one and a half to two hours starting around 8:00am. Then I eat, run and work on conditioning training. In the evening, I’ll focus on cardio. I do this routine three to four times a week. On other days, I’ll active rest - stretching, yoga, pilates or light agility. What about during season? Our work week starts on Wednesdays. Wednesday through Friday, we have meetings in the morning. Around 11:00am, we do a walkthrough to go over plays. After lunch, we have actual practice for two to three hours, then sit down for more meetings. On Saturday, we do a light walkthrough. If we have an away game that week, that’s our travel day. If it’s a home game, we go home

and rest for a while before meeting at the team hotel to go over the game plan. Sunday is game day. Monday we meet to go over film and Tuesday is generally the off day in the NFL. What do you like to do on your days off? I usually go in to work out in the morning to get rid of the lactic acid from the game. I catch up with friends and family that I haven’t talked to that week and get ready for the next day. I also watch Monday Night Football to get my mind off of things and relax. What is your favorite memory of living in Austin? We won a lot in Austin, including the BCS title. At the time, I was part of the winningest team at Texas. Outside of football, I would say going to class is what I miss most. Well, maybe not necessarily going to class, but being on campus. There’s also great food around Austin and I love to eat. What do you miss most about Austin? There are so many different types of people, personalities and cultures in Austin. I definitely miss playing football there, so it’s bittersweet.

How Matthew McConaughey is turning a philosophy into a way of (JK)Livin' BY DANIEL RAMIREZ

He makes it all seem so easy. Whether it is the mischievous and disarming smile, the voice that can find an East Texas Southern drawl on ready command or the casual manner in which he conducts himself in nearly any environment. It is as though no stressor, from the aggressive paparazzi to demanding movie roles, has any lasting negative effect on the man. He’s shielded by something that maintains the smile, raises his spirits and allows him, regardless of circumstances, to just keep livin’. Is it any wonder then, that so many are tempted to wonder what Austinite Matthew McConaughey’s secret is? His star is still as bright in the sky as ever, he was wedded just last year to his incomparable long-time girlfriend, Camila Alves, and, from the looks of his forthcoming film, Dallas Buyers Club, is about to garner more than a passing glance from the Academy of Motion Picture Academy Arts and Sciences. Through the arduous journey to success and even while navigating the highs and lows that come with a life spent in the public eye, McConaughey has maintained an impossible level of unflappable coolness. When prompted to reveal the secret to this level of calm, this method of being, McConaughey points to a phrase that’s been associated with

the star since he first emerged on the scene, both metaphorically and literally, in 1993’s Dazed and Confused. With one on-screen phrase, he gave voice to the divining rod for such an admirable life, revealing, early on, the rule that’s been responsible for every success that followed and for the placid calm he radiates amid any of life’s storms. As with many great philosophies, Matthew’s emerged in the aftermath of great struggle. “It began as an approach to dealing with my father's moving on in 1992: a way I understood keeping his spirit alive after his body was gone,” he explains. It turns out, the line from the film was more than the indulgence of a 1970s high school stoner archetype. Just keep livin' made its way into the final cut and, from there, into the rest of the actor’s worldview. “I found myself applying it to so many other facets of my life, and I noticed how often it served as a compass for me, almost a decision making paradigm,” he says. Whenever faced with a struggle or a challenge, he would revisit his newfound mantra. “What's the just keep livin' choice?” he asks. “What action pays one back? Has the most residuals? Reciprocates more life?” These are the questions that follow his philosophy, and the simplicity of their nature hides the depth of what is truly at work within it. The just keep livin' choice has helped me evolve, remain optimistic, learn with less regret and find the truth of the situation sooner than without it.” For Matthew, the theory is battle-tested, again and again. When prodded about when it is that he himself needs to be reminded of the guiding rule, McConaughey delivers a humble confession that lets the world in on how very human this new-age sage really is. He calls on the adage, “Whenever I feel like I'm in a fishbowl, like all eyes are on me and I want to insulate myself from the outside world. Whether it’s paparazzi outside the house, following my family wherever we go or bad news about me online that I know every stranger out there believes, true or not – these are the times I have to remind myself that I need to embrace the day,” he discloses. “I remind myself that I had rights as a human and a citizen long before I was famous, so the j.k. livin’ choice reminds me to live freely and engage in the day.” Additionally, true to the Texan in him, McConaughey calls on the phrase, also offering an earnest (and very Texan) curse word in explaining. It turns out he relies on his credo “when my ego gets over or under inflated. Either way, the j. k. livin’ perspective helps me disseminate between the truth and the bullshit, the fickle and the found, and I can usually end up laughing with myself.” It may not be the storied methods of Socrates or Plato, but it isn’t all that much of a stretch to compare the tenets of those pioneers to McConaughey’s simplified rule for how to conduct one’s self. Perhaps improving on the truth-seeking and globally focused perspectives of the Greeks, Matthew takes the same macroscopic and microscopic approach to his own school of thought. “It’s something that anyone can apply personally to their own lives – to what and who is important to them. It’s pretty existential, so each can make it their own,” he illustrates. It seems nebulous until you keep asking yourself what it means to just keep livin’.” But, as he explains, it goes still deeper. “It’s responsible without being militant, hedonistic without being self-destructive and aspirational without being corny. It's mine and it’s yours, because more ‘life’ is a pretty solid natural law,” he continues. Of course, the cool factor isn’t lost on him, as he tacks on a final quip to his explanation. “Plus, it makes a cool bumper sticker,” McConaughey adds.

COV ER S TORY

But just keep livin’ is now responsible for far more than just one man’s successful rise to superstardom. It has given birth to a both a clothing line and a foundation, both of which uphold the overall philosophy as their guiding principle. Naturally, the clothing line is a catalogue of items that is designed for a casual and active life. T-shirts that adorn common sense phrases, instead of braggardly or lewd statements, are a hallmark of the line; but it incorporates a fashion ethic that is perfectly at home within the Austin city limits, and seems almost inspired by the city’s laid back nature. “Formalities are fine,” McConaughey remarks, “but they come with rules, demarcations, borders, rights of passage and they don't allow for most adaptable improvisation that is adventure. The JKL Brand clothing line is fashionable adventure wear.” And while he readily admits that it doesn’t yet address those times when adventure takes one into a more formal environment, such as an award ceremony or gala event, McConaughey hasn’t ruled out the line’s expansion to cover such a case. He just doesn’t see those times as dictating the overall ethos of the clothing. “It's a more mobile society we live in, and inherently less formal as such,” he remarks. But he does leave room for a compromise, musing that, “Maybe the JKL Brand tux with a built-in parachute would be appropriate.” But the clothing also serves to give back, creating an offset to any perceived consumerism associated with sporting the brand. The Just Keep Livin’ Foundation, which benefits from donations as well as sales of the clothing line, is a program directed at school-age children, which encourages them to adopt the philosophy early and have it inform their decisions on health, wellness, philanthropy and something that many adults feel is lacking in younger generations or in those raised north of the Mason-Dixon line – manners. “Break a sweat. Eat healthy. Say 'thank you.' – those are three things that, when I'm doing them, I am a happier McConaughey,” Matthew admits. “I have more energ y, more confidence, more compassion, more self-reliance and less stress when I'm doing these three things more often,” he insists. And it is the extrapolation of the just keep livin’ mentality that is being implemented in high schools in three states, including both Texas and California. Just keep livin’, in this context, means continuing to stress the importance of adopting exercise, nutrition and gratitude into everyday life, in keeping with the philosophical doctrine. The philosopher is proud of how it’s caught on. “The 15 schools we are in now are vital and we continue to gather scientific research to show just how our program is helping, and more than just a feel-good idea. And so far, it is.” It is all a lot for one man to take upon himself, to start a new school of philosophy. But it is a pure endeavor, unencumbered by the perceived responsibility of celebrity. McConaughey is quick to lean on his humility when any credit for the just keep livin’ endeavors are heaped upon him. “I personally have found a few things in my life that have nurtured health and good times,” he modestly explains, “and if others can apply some things I've learned to their own lives and it turns them on, then take 'em and run.” Having founded the philosophy that has led his life to such success, he merely wants to share. “I don't own them,” he stresses, then giving perhaps the most profound of his philosophical ideas. “It's the human experience we're all in,” he begins. “Find something that is working? Dissect the success – make it epidemic.” Given his efforts and the increasing success of the just keep livin’ philosophy, it appears that, for Matthew, if one sticks to that simple rule, the “livin’” is good.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING ABOUT LIVING IN TEXAS (AT LEAST FOR WOMEN) IS WALKING OUTSIDE, OR SOMETIMES JUST THINKING ABOUT WALKING OUTSIDE, AND YOUR MAKEUP STARTS STREAMING DOWN YOUR FACE. LUCKILY, ROCHELLE RAE OF RAE COSMETICS HAS A SOLUTION TO SAVE THE DAY.

Rochelle moved to Los Angeles to attend the Makeup Designory (MUD). After she finished the program, she moved back to Austin and worked freelance, mainly for film sets. “I was realizing every five seconds on a movie set or on a film shoot, if it was outside you almost had to redo the makeup, caking it on trying to keep it on because it’s melting off their face,” Rochelle said. “There should be a makeup line for sweaty people! It started as what would keep on makeup in a photo shoot. I found that if I put on actually less makeup it was staying on better and just covering up the areas that needed to be covered. It’s not only for movie sets, it’s for people going to their car in Texas.” Rochelle started the makeup line in 2005 solely with Climate Control Mineral Tint—water-based foundation, sunscreen and antioxidant moisturizer all in one—and it developed from there. Rae Cosmetics now offers products ranging from lip gloss (our favorite!) to eye shadow to mineral powder. “It’s for everyone - everyone sweats, whether they’re running

after a house full of kids or going to the gym,” Rochelle said. “Everyone works out now - a barre class, a pilates class, a yoga class. When I was a kid, mom maybe put on her sweats and hid in the corner of the gym. Now it’s such a social arena. You go to yoga class with your three girlfriends. That’s why you do yoga, so you can have a glass of wine after.” So what happens when you sweat? It doesn’t clog your pores. Normal foundation is like a mask and slides right off your face when you sweat. With this makeup, you sweat through it and your skin can breathe. It even has SPF 20 to protect your face. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the key active ingredients in the Climate Control line, which makes it naturally water-resistant. “We encourage people to try it out. We jokingly say ‘We’ll see you tomorrow,’ but they come back. We’re one of the few lines that say, ‘You are an athlete. You are an active person. This is for you. This is for girls that really sweat.’” Rochelle, representing Rae Cosmetics, is an active member of Austin’s philantropic community. She is involved in several charities, including PETA, American Heart Association and Girlstart. Girlstart, whose mission is empowering girls in math, science and technology is one of the first organizations Rochelle became involved with. A portion of the proceeds from each

Austin Lifestyle Magazine with a behind the scenes look at Rae Cosmetics’ “What Makes You Sweat?” photo shoot with Susan Dell.

Smarty lip gloss is donated to Girlstart. Launching in November, Rochelle’s new advertising campaign, “What Makes You Sweat?” features women from the Austin community. Most are active in Austin, both physically and philanthropically. “They all do different things, but they’re all proud to sweat and give it their all every day whether they are a swim coach or a mother of two,” Rochelle said. “People that really do go out there and give it their all. These women are beautiful on the inside and the outside and they want to look good that way.” Among the faces of the new campaign is Susan Dell, athlete, philanthropist and wife of Michael Dell. Susan actually discovered Rochelle’s makeup at a business where she was selling her own line and started buying the products. Rochelle has been doing Susan’s makeup for years, and Susan’s daughters wear the line as well. “Talk about philanthropist - Susan has speaking engagements, galas and all kinds of things she’s running around to that make her sweat,” Rochelle said. “We’ve always jokingly said, 'You should model for me someday,' and kept talking about it.” Susan’s favorite Rae Cosmetics product is the lip gloss. She has about three or four of every color stashed in key locations like the car, suitcase and of course, her training bag (right next to the Advil). She has competed in several cycling races, half marathons and 10K running races. She also completed the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii as well as five Half Ironman races, 4 marathons and more Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons than she can count. “My family teases me about my lip gloss,” Susan said. “When I was in the Ironman, I had lip gloss in my fanny belt. At the world championships, you go into this area that they call the energy lab where it’s really, really hot. It’s at mile 16-20 and no one can see you so that’s where I put on my lip gloss. So I came out at mile 20 with my lip gloss and Michael and my kids knew. At the very end of swimming 2.4 miles, riding 112 and I was at the twentieth mile of the run, and I’m like, 'I’ll see you in six miles and I’m ready for the shot!’” While the Texas heat and Dell's level of activity all but guarantee a healthy sweat, thanks to Rochelle Rae, it won't be at any cost to her desired look.

More Of Lucy To Love LUCY’S FRIED CHICKEN EXPANDS NORTH

Leave it to Austin to reinvent American cuisine as art form. For example, rather than being boxed in at every turn by the golden arches and factory-assembled fast food that has come to define the burger for most cities, Austin has made a craft of the process, adding a unique spin to each burger and creating mini-chains of its own, albeit with much longer lines than the typical drivethru. But, for all of the attention that the hamburger gets as the definitive American food, it is Austin’s recent American cuisine reclamation that brings with it the most joy. Welcome the return of authentic fried chicken, courtesy of the growing demand that made for a second location of Lucy’s. The neon leg still kicks the same as the lady who lights the South Congress area, though it belongs to an altogether different Lucy. This one bears a fierier mane and brightens Burnet Road. The second daughter of James Beard Award-winning Olivia, Lucy’s second location differs from the incredible original only in cosmetic features. The same fried chicken, painstakingly prepared in traditional methods, is still in plentiful supply. The drinks are still ice-cold and the atmosphere is still as casual as patio season. What Lucy’s arrival on Burnet means is that the same crispy chicken, served on-the-bone and in buckets adorned with jalapeños, is available to Austinites who shy away from MoPac and downtown during busy hours. Also available are the deepfried deviled eggs and broiled oyster combinations, to say nothing of Lucy’s highly underrated “steak night.” The Tuesday evening feature has been responsible, on different visits, for a tang y chimichurri steak, as well as one of the best ribeyes in town, prepared in a different way each time we’ve visited. Add to that the cornbread that tastes as though it is just shy of a Louisiana Johnnie Cake with a little spice and there’s reason enough to celebrate Lucy’s new digs. But while the tried-and-true classics are now accessible to one

66 austinlifestylemagazine.com

more point on the compass, the new location also presented Chef James Holmes and his team with an opportunity to revisit the menu for both locations and add some new dishes that are soon to be as classic as the items the concept was built upon. The Fried Chicken Nachos are monolithic in size and taste, combining the best of Lucy’s with the best of Tex-Mex, and creating a delicious cheesy and crispy hybrid that won’t soon be removed from the menu, judging from the impression the dish made. Also new to the menu and just as impressive is the cornucopia of fried wonders that is the Frito Misto, which fries up the best of the deep South and transports diners well east of Austin with okra and fried green tomatoes joining a fried oyster party. Other sections of the menu have been renovated alongside the fried delicacies, and while we were too full to sample the Homemade Moon Pie or any of the other desserts listed, we managed to introduce ourselves to the new items on the cocktail menu. Of particular interest was the spicy Moscow Mule with the endearing name, the Hee-Hawlepeño, which loudly reminded the palate of both the spiciness of Texas food, as well as the unmistakable kick of ginger. Luckily for the taste buds of the less adventurous, Lucy’s on Burnet ushered in a drink that is ideally suited to relieve a singed palate or a Texas summer day. The Melon Cooler lives up to its moniker, soothing with every sip of its herbaceous hibiscus hints and its bubbly crispness. Each of the new beverages finds itself right at home on the menu, next to Lucy’s fantastic fare. And now, diners from north to south can find a home for their comfort food cravings in a welcoming environment. Austin can only hope that this is the start of the authentic fried chicken renaissance; and that Lucy’s neon legs will soon grace more neighborhoods than the ever-present big bucket fast food chains. The Best Whiskey In The World BALCONES DISTILLERY EARNS THE SUPERLATIVE

BY DANIEL RAMIREZ

In reviewing any food or drink, it is commonplace for writer and reader alike to look for the superlative proclamation. Calling something “the best” of anything is a way to grab attention, proudly declaring that someone has found it and deemed the item, whatever it may be. Few people are drawn to the penultimate dish or drink, or the merely adequate appetizer or cocktail. But everyone wants to know about the best barbecue and the best restaurant experience. Those subjects are constant conversation starters, and with good reason. Making such a claim holds interest and prompts each person to decide for him or herself whether or not the evaluation is justified. Furthermore, finding the genuine article – the honest best of anything savored or sipped – is as rare as a bottle of Balcones whiskey. Naturally, the comparison explains the confidence with which Austin Lifestyle Magazine declares that Balcones, a small distillery a mere 90 miles north, makes the finest spirits available. Balcones Distillery makes whiskey, whiskey-related spirits and—should you be able to track down a bottle—the best bourbon ever to grace a glass. It is important to note that this proclamation is made neither lightly nor without incredible support. The bottles produced from a distillery so modest that it began in a building beneath the 17th Street bridge in Waco, Texas, have garnered worldwide acclaim, taking home medal after medal in international spirits competitions, including a Best in Show, Best Whisk(e)y, Best Single Malt and Double Gold Awards in the 2011 New York World Wine and Spirits Competition, all for only one of Balcones' offerings. The rest of its rare bottles have followed suit in subsequent years, with medal after medal eventually taking the title of Craft Distillery of the Year from Whisky Magazine, earning the title over such wellknown and vaunted producers as Buffalo Trace and Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, home of the most gasp-worthy spirit in drinking circles, Pappy Van Winkle. Balcones has become the relative juggernaut in the spirits world, taking on and defeating even Scotland’s finest bottles, proving

that the birthplace of whiskey is no longer the only place where it can reach its full potential. One may even begin to wonder what they’re putting in the water in Waco, Texas, since it seems that Balcones founder Chip Tate has the Midas Touch with even his limited edition barrels, which are more experimental than full-production efforts. The reality of their success is a veiled and guarded secret, and has the collective spirits world scratching its head. How, for example, is one to explain Rumble, a whiskey-like spirit that carries notes of wildflower honey, caramel and a buttery silkiness that is hard to find anywhere else, let alone a bottle of liquor? Or, better yet, how is it that the Balcones Single Malt, the most celebrated bottle in regular production, holds hints of pure maple syrup and is smoother than any other straight whiskey from any shelf in any bar? But, beyond the regular offerings, if a sample of the now-ended limited run of Straight Bourbon is within reach, how is one to explain that the detailed descriptions from magazines and spirits reviewers and whiskey aficionados suddenly make perfect sense? The experience defies explanation and would merit a full-scale investigation into the production methods used by Tate and his devoted crew, except for the fact that, in the presence of such a definitively great glass, it is hard to do anything but enjoy every sip, every flavor note and every drop of the divine liquid. Certainly, all the international acclaim and the gushing reviews sound more like tall tales, worthy of Texas lore. Yet, as with any superlative declaration, there is little one can do to prove the point of all the praise and the worth of each and every Balcones offering, from their medal winners to the smoked mystery that is their Brimstone bottle. The best one can do is encourage whiskey lovers to find a bottle wherever they can – supplies are impossibly scarce – sit down and discover for themselves what magic is being created just north of Austin. And, should you do so, don’t hesitate to invite the Austin Lifestyle Magazine staff to join you for a glass. ALM

To Market, To Market MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR TRIP TO THE FARMERS' MARKET With Austinites paying more attention to how their food is sourced and grown, Austin has evolved into a community that greatly favors natural products over mass-produced and seasonal availability instead of commercial overproduction. The city as a whole is more mindful of the locavore movement and now supports no less than 11 farmers' markets in the area, making it significantly more convenient to buy locally-produced foods and goods. But for all the availability, the farmers' market can be a daunting place for those who are unfamiliar with the practice. Thus, for the uninitiated, the Accidental Epicurean decided to take a look at some guidelines and tips on successfully navigating a trip to your nearest farmers' market with five easy steps.

STEP 1: THE EARLY BIRD GETS. . .

Farmers aren’t known for sleeping in on any given day. Up with or before the dawn, a farmer typically works hard to make the most of his or her day, getting the most possible daylight for their crops and their daily chores. It stands to reason, then, that the earlier patrons of any farmers' market in the Austin area will not only gain the respect of the farming producers present at the market, but will have their choice of the best perishables that each provider has at his or her booth. In local and organic sourcing, it is important to limit the product’s exposure to the elements and reduce the time from farm to table (to stomach).

and cause them to be overly large) or if they had to survive a heat wave (will make the grapes sweeter, but also ripen more rapidly or simply dry out). While the young adult at the corner store working his or her way through high school might not be able to respond to your question, the farmers at the farmers' market take great pride in their product because it’s a result of their own hard work. There are few if any answers they won’t have, and they’ll have suggestions for what to prepare with their produce, protein or product, as well as how other regular clients have enjoyed their wares. STEP 4: TRY SOMETHING NEW

STEP 2: KNOW THE SEASON

The local supermarket would have shoppers believe that all products are available at any time of the year. Because they source from different countries and continents, the food provided is still relying on its terroir – that blessed interaction of environment and product – but the consumer never need know it. But, at the farmers' market, when a product is grown near downtown Austin, there are definitely limits to what the Texas terroir can produce. Simply put, don’t expect tomatoes in the dead of winter, peaches after September or pineapples at any time. It’s important to be aware of hunting seasons for wild game as well, in the event that you are buying proteins. Deer in the winter is fine, but by summer, either the backstrap has been frozen or it is potentially illegal.

Undoubtedly, you are going to encounter something you’ve never seen at a supermarket. Farmers' markets are ideal places to come in contact with rare items, unusual cuts and unique products that are either unlikely to be commercially popular or are simply too complicated to appeal to the masses. Take the opportunity to try something new. On a recent trip to the Sustainable Food Center’s Farmers' Market in downtown, we encountered duck eggs for sale and use them to make the fluffiest and heartiest omelet possible. Pork belly and long-bone chops are not uncommon and the providers are willing to introduce you to items that have become a staple of their booths, while perhaps flying under the radar of an HEB or Whole Foods Market. You’ll have a few misses and perhaps discover that you have no palate for daikon, but we guarantee you’ll have more delicious finds than failures.

STEP 3: TALK TO THE VENDORS

In the event that you aren’t sure about origin, season or production methods, the irreplaceable benefit of the farmers' market is the presence of the people who can answer, beyond a shadow of a doubt, any questions you might have about their product. Imagine asking the stock boy at the supermarket if the onions you’re taking home are fertilized with chemical or natural methods, or if the grapes are grown during a particularly rainy season (will oversaturate the grapes

STEP 5: CONSUME MORE THAN THE FOOD

The farmers' market isn’t solely for food products or even retail sales. Live music, household goods and products that are distinctly Austin accompany nearly every farmers' market in town. You’ll find soap, coffee, chocolate, kombucha, clothing and even some massage therapy. Certainly take your local-centric shopping list with you when you visit, but be prepared to go off-plan. ALM

Protecting Austin's Unique Vision THE MOST OBVIOUS CHARACTERISTIC OF AUSTIN, TEXAS IS EASY TO SEE.

The city and its residents have a particular style and an incomparable dedication to the unique. It stands to reason, then, that Austin just sees things differently. And while Austin’s eccentric take on the world is worthy of protecting and preserving, the practical vision of Austinites and Central Texans in the Austin area warrants safeguarding as well. “Regular annual eye exams are important to monitor any early changes in vision and health problems of the eyes,” explains Spectacle Eye Design optometrist, Dr. Collin Tam. Eyesight doesn’t get the same annual attention that is reserved for medical and dental checkups, but the danger of ignoring one’s vision is equivalent to ignoring routine physicals and teeth cleanings. “Symptom-free diseases like glaucoma and retinal disease are only detected early with a thorough eye exam before serious vision changes occur,” Tam explains. Even in the age of contacts and self-care for corrective vision, enlisting the aid of a professional is still of significant benefit, especially in the allergen-rich Austin area. “Contact lens problems are easily prevented and should be evaluated regularly for proper alignment and lens care,” Tam insists, explaining further that, “mild eye allergy issues can also be resolved with the correct contact lens and solution combinations.” Proper attention from a professional can benefit in even greater measure, as the eyewear one chooses can determine comfort with corrective vision, no matter whether one opts for contact lenses or glasses. And while online and department store retail offerings have become popular, they are poor substitutes for hands-on attention to the effectiveness and the fit of eyewear. Dr. Tam advises an in-person visit to a respected optometrist to avoid any mishaps in prescription or fit, since “there are precise measurements and adjustments that need to be made before lenses can be fabricated to ensure the prescription is made and fitted correctly." The on-demand world of online shopping provides little in the way of determining proper fit and function, increasing this eye-toeye meeting between patient and optometrist. “Eyeglasses are custom fit to the individual,” Tam insists, “and it is difficult to do online especially

with astigmatism and progressive lens prescriptions.” These cautions are met with increasing concern when considering the nature of most work in the Internet age. More time at a computer and more exposure to lit screens has necessitated some consideration be given to the concerns of the modern day working man and woman. “People spend a lot of time in front of monitors and portable devices,” Tam reminds us. “There are a host of vision and eye issues related to constant computer and personal device use. The most obvious is eyestrain and fatigue. Air conditioning is also a predominant factor for dry eyes, which is a major problem with contact lens use,” he adds. Although the summer months are coming to a close, the Texas sun is never far away from a tailgate, a long weekend or a trip to the lake, all of which present an altogether different damaging effect. “The intense sun in Austin can affect sight in many ways,” Dr. Tam warns. “Especially around water, there is a lot of glare with the sun and it is important for everyone to protect their eyes with good quality sunglasses that are polarized and with ultraviolet protection.” The harm in avoiding this preventative measure is more crucial than the danger of not looking stylish. “If you minimize the glare, you can reduce the aging effects from the sun, like early cataracts and macular degeneration.” Again, the most basic steps can be worth years of benefit, since the slightest improvement to habits can alter the long-term effects of daily life on one’s eyes. Spectacle Eye Design, a new source of optical care in the Central Texas area, caters not only to the protection of the vision of its clientele, but also to the unique vision Austinites have for style. “Austin is known for being funky, and people here like the unique styles that are not like anything available in the mall or chain optical shops,” Tam says. It’s a keen observation, to which he adds, “They like designs that are trendy and fashionable, but not stuffy or pretentious.” Dr. Collin Tam and the Spectacle Eye Design staff have a clear vision of what Austin eyes are drawn toward, as well as how to keep them looking sharp and seeing sharper. One pair, however, stands out; they do things a little bit differently. Kimberley Flores has been working out at Austin Simply Fit with her personal trainer, Meryl Carey, since April. “It was a delayed New Year’s resolution,” Kimberly said. “I was spending so much time sitting at work and I needed someone to help get me into shape.” Each week, Meryl takes Kimberly through a vigorous 30-minute workout that is much like the one she does with all of her clients. At first, their workout routine looks the same as any other; that is, until Meryl held out her arm to guide Kimberly from one machine to the next - Kimberly is completely blind. “I was born with retina detachments and at age 10, doctors were no longer able to correct them,” Kimberly said. Kimberly refuses to let her inability to see be a deterrent from working out and getting fit. “I don’t consider myself any different from anyone else that walks into the gym,” Kimberly said. “I’ve always had an ‘I will try just about anything’ attitude.” Kimberly’s trainer gives her a lot more credit. “I think it takes a lot of courage, determination and motivation to come to the gym (she walks, by the way) and do what she does every week,” Meryl said. “She can’t see the box I want her to step on, the straps I want her to hold or the dumbbell I want her to lift.” Kimberly is not Meryl’s first blind client. Prior to working with Kimberly, Meryl trained her husband Richie, who is also blind. Working with Richie and Kimberly, Meryl has had to modify her approach; she uses vocal cues and relies more on touch to explain exercises. One thing she hasn’t done, however, is alter the intensity of the workouts. “She’s not overly protective or too motherly and she never rules things out. We are a great pair,” Kimberly said. With Meryl’s help, Kimberly is well on her way to reaching her fitness goals: to look better and become more fit. It doesn’t matter to Kimberly whether or not she or her husband can see (and admire) the physical results of her hard work. For her, it’s not just about looking good; it’s about getting healthy and feeling great. “It’s just as important to me as it is to everyone else,” Kimberly said. “I want to be more toned and while I might not be able to see it, I can feel it and it feels good.”

Bringing Athletes Together

BY ANDREA JULIAN AUSTIN IS ONE OF THE FITTEST CITIES IN THE COUNTRY. On any given day, you can cycle, paddle, swim, join a boot camp, take a yoga class, sign up for a race - triathlon, marathon, or mud - or simply go for a fun run around Lady Bird Lake. While working out on your own will get you fit, becoming a member of the Austin athletic community can be much more fulfilling, and much more fun. But finding out when a crew is meeting up or where a race is happening can be challenging and frustrating, especially if you’re new to town. That’s where Gritness steps in. Gritness (Gritness.com) is a new local website that aims to be the definitive resource for finding and joining fitness activities in Austin and beyond. It is a type of social networking for athletes – those folks who want to take part in one (or several) of the fitness events happening in Austin each and every day. Co-founders and avid cyclists Jason Whitson and Tommy Fad created the site out of pure frustration. “We were fed-up with the level of effort required to get people together for a workout. It always started with an e-mail chain that quickly got off topic, followed by text messages, phone calls and messenger pigeons,” Whitson said. Whitson and Fad’s goal was to create a website that allowed members of the fitness community to communicate with one another, making it easy to stay fit with friends. They also wanted to give businesses an easy, low-cost way to organize their paid activities and reach a fit audience. Gritness.com launched in May and enables fitness enthusiasts, as well as event organizers, to create profiles and group pages. Members can promote events and activities ranging from organized triathlons to random Saturday bike rides. Events can be public or private, allowing you to invite a select group of friends or make it open to the entire Gritness community. “We want to be the one-stop site for all group fitness activities going on in Austin and around the world, from workouts in local neighborhoods to workouts in foreign countries while you’re traveling,” Fad said. “We also want to make it easy to join these activities by providing an affordable registration platform for event organizers of all sizes,” Whitson said. The site also gives users the flexibility to create semi-private events, allowing organizers to specify their ideal workout participants. For example, an elite runner may only want to organize an activity for participants who can average a sub-five minute mile. Conversely, the activity organizer may be new to the running world and want to run only with people who average a 10 minute mile. “Elite athletes don’t typically want to slow down during a ride, run or swim,” said Fad. “Casual athletes don’t want to keep up with Tour de France winners either.”

Gritness is still in its infancy but has already attracted hundreds of members and dozens of local and national athletic organizations. When you register with Gritness, you will be instantly connected not only to athletes in the community, but to groups including Athleta, Life Time Athletic Events, High Five Events, local gyms, yoga studios and boot camps. It is free and easy to create an account with Gritness through its website. Gritness also gives you the option to link up your account with your existing Facebook or Google Plus account. This feature allows you to have just one login ID for all your social networking sites and also enables you to find out which of your friends are already getting fit with Gritness. Capturing the activity of the world is a bold idea, but it is one that Todd and Whitson are firmly dedicated to. Their vision is to bring athletes together and to make the world a little more active. “We want people to meet like-minded individuals and create lifelong friendships, not just in Austin but in any city they travel to,” Whitson said. “With a central location for all kinds of workouts, sitting on the couch alone will never be an option.” Visit Gritness.com to learn more.

Baby Steps: How to Form Healthy Habits in Children that Last a Lifetime BY LISA TALEV WE ALL HAVE HABITS, AND MODERN-DAY MARKETING EXPERTS AGREE,

What are habits, exactly? Technically speaking, they are automatic behavior patterns driven by neurochemical impulses in the brain. They activate our pleasure and reward centers, which anticipate the comfort and pleasure of familiar things. We repeat our habits regularly because they make us feel good in the moment—even if they leave us feeling bad later. Habits are automatic, allowing us to rest our conscious minds a little. We get to zone out, putting the over-worked “thinking brain” on auto-pilot. To some degree, who we are in life is defined by our habits. To paraphrase a well-known quote: Thoughts become words; Words become actions; Actions become habits; Habits become character; Character becomes destiny. Habits we learn at an early age may determine the course of our lives.

HABITS STARTED IN CHILDHOOD TEND TO LAST A LIFETIME.

THE MODERN HEALTH CRISIS

Parents today often struggle to teach healthy habits. Kids are bombarded with advertisements for calorie-rich, nutrient-poor foods that damage health. We are now seeing record numbers of 10-yearolds with Type II Diabetes and obesity, early stages of heart disease, depression and attention problems. This new generation of children is likely to die younger and be sicker than their parents. Consider how many unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks are marketed directly to kids. They are packaged in “fun” boxes, with bright, exciting, colorful cartoons and images that burn deep into a child’s psyche. They associate fun and playtime with junk food and make healthy food seem boring. How can you compete with food marketing without being controlling or restrictive? Below are some recommendations I give my wellness coaching clients to help their kids get excited about healthy habits. KIDS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN

If you spend time around kids, you’ve probably noticed that all they do is play. Children develop critical life skills by making everything a game. The advertisement-driven media has done a great job convincing kids that healthy food is boring and for grown-ups, while processed

80 austinlifestylemagazine.com

food is “just for kids.” How do you get across a different message? By making healthy food prep fun. My little neice (who loves sugar, fries and soda), actually loves making healthy food too. She glows with excitement when I let her press watermelon chunks through my juicer. She seems so proud to help make dinner when we give her simple tasks in the kitchen. One of her favorite “jobs” is to arrange slices of brightly colored veggie slices onto everyone’s plate. Rather than saying no to the bad stuff, we say yes to the good stuff. If we’re all having fun, she’s happy. EXERCISE AS PLAY TIME

As many schools in recent years have cut PE programs, academic performance has suffered. Research shows that even just 30 minutes of physical exercise per day (running, kicking a ball, dancing, gymnastics, etc.) not only develops neuromuscular coordination, it actually helps calm and focus the mind. Kids are full of energy—too full to sit still all day. If we want to improve attention and learning, letting children burn off excess energy does more for their brains than longer school days. Just as with healthy foods, teaching kids to crave exercise is about making it fun. Do they find self-expression in dancing? Do they love pretending they are fish when swimming? How can we bring an element of light-hearted play into the picture versus forcing them to compete in a sport they don’t enjoy? Too many competitive mini-leagues exist today. I’ve heard stories about youth soccer leagues that place so much emphasis on rank and winning that they end up causing stress in parents and children alike. Reality check: young kids need confidence-boosting free play, not ego-driven competition. PARENT ROLE MODELS: MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO

Children love the idea of being all grown up. They watch their parents, perhaps more than we realize. Does mom push her bland steamed vegetables and boiled chicken around on her plate, looking tired and deprived? Does dad eat burgers and pizza with gusto? These non-verbal messages go deep, programming kids to choose the foods they perceive as “fun.” When parents do their part to teach moderation with junk food (a few bites is yummy; too much is a tummy ache), they provide a muchneeded alternative to the food-crazed culture on TV. When healthy food is made with love and eaten joyfully, parents can instill good habits early, without becoming food dictators.
