Miles Middle School National Junior Honor Society to an afternoon Pizza Party recently as a special “thank you” for their service during the annual Amityville Apple Festival. Thirty-four students in 8th and 9th grade spent as many as eight hours assisting the Chamber with various tasks during the festival, which took place in October.

No matter how much of a “head start” I get on the week, I always feel completely overwhelmed by the time Friday comes around. Is it just me? Do I subconsciously slow down the pace as the week progresses, forcing everything to pile up at the end? Or does the list of “To Do” items continuously outweigh the “Done” section, as seven more tasks are added for every two accomplished? So it would seem. And all this without taking a day off. Imagine if, by some sheer loss of judgement, I actually tried to cram everything into four days,

rather than five. What would happen then? Not that the weekends are particularly restful and relaxing either, mind you. No, they pretty much consist of two days of nonstop running around, back and forth across the Island, in a fruitless effort to mix chores, errands and maybe a touch of recreation thrown in for good measure (read: mental health). When did my schedule become so insane? Seems like it was not so long ago that I had quite a bit more free time on my hands, even days when I was somewhat bored. Imagine that. Sort of makes you wish for the days back in elementary school when you

would make it about three days into summer vacation before whining that there was “nothing” to do. Ah, to be that young and innocent again. Nowadays, most people work overtime leading up to and following a “vacation,” only to have it interspersed by checking e-mails, voicemails and “touching base” to make sure everything is running smoothly in their absence. I can’t remember the last time I spent even a handful of days completely cut off from the rest of the world. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Sounds like a plan, in fact. Once I catch up on the week. If I ever do :)

In its second year, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville enjoyed graduation festivities honoring students who completed a unique program on asthma awareness and asthma management. Representatives from the Asthma Coalition of Long Island and Molloy College Division of Nursing were on hand to provide certificates of completion as ‘asthma experts’ to 12 accomplished students. Education provided by senior nursing students from Molloy College consisted of six, 40 minute lessons specifically designed for school age children, ages 8 -11. The program, Open Airways®, was created by the American Lung Association to teach children with asthma steps to prevent recurrent episodes, recognize the signs and

symptoms of an asthma attack and know what interventions to take to feel more confident about taking care of asthma on a daily basis. To date, this win-win partnership has helped to teach 33 students attending PAMES and 77 students throughout the district proper asthma selfmanagement. According to the Asthma Coalition, as many as 12 million school days are lost in a given year due to absences from asthmarelated sicknesses. More locally, approximately one of every nine children in Amityville suffers from asthmatic symptoms.

Amityville Memorial High School’s auditorium was abuzz with the sounds of jazz and different genres of music as current students, alumni and fellow musicians and colleagues gathered to honor the memory of John “Chris” LaMarca, the late AMHS Jazz Band leader and Amityville School District music teacher who passed away suddenly in November. For close to five hours, 15 different music and performing acts took to the stage to celebrate his life and legacy on the evening of January 4th. Performers included Kevin Jackman, who has played music since the fourth-grade and who first learned about Mr. LaMarca through his sister Corine, for whom he also taught. “He always had a spark of enthusiasm,” said Kevin, who began playing the trumpet in the ninth-

Dear Mr. Dellacio, Century 21, & Aunt Laurie-Ann, We wanted to take a moment during this crazy time of the year to wish everyone & their families a Happy Holiday & a Healthy New Year. It was so nice to meet all of you. Most of all we wanted to take the time out to say thank you for inviting us to visit Santa & Mrs. Claus. The kids were so excited to see him & be able to speak to him. It’s all they talked about for days. The kids couldn’t wait for Daddy to get home, so they could tell him just how magical Santa really was. He knew everything! They couldn’t believe he knew just where they were staying, with Nana & Papa. While we rebuild our home. It was fantastic to hear their voices put to ease, that he would ﬁnd them Christmas Eve. The very next day they wanted to send out Christmas cards to everyone, with their picture, with Santa. What a fabulous feeling as a mother, to see them so happy. This has been a very rough 2 months & we have a long road ahead of us. As a family we will get through this together, rebuild & replace in time. But without the help & support of our family, friends & neighbors, it would be very difficult. We thank you! This holiday we feel very lucky & blessed. We wanted you to know how much we appreciated your kindness & how you contributed to that feeling. And because of you Leah, Emily & Matthew are no longer concerned. Merry Christmas to you all!
