work in service to others. At the Cougar Pride Wrestling Tournament, the St. John the Baptist Wrestling Team asked all participating teams to also bring non-perishable food donations. The SJB Wrestling Team made arrangements for team members to bring all donations to the parish outreach at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst. The Wrestling Team had a great response and expects to make this part of the annual tournament tradition. The team set up boxes in the school lobby area to collect from each team when they arrived for weigh in. St. Johns had a multitude of parents and students ready to pack up the food items, and to transport them to the Parish. Boy’s Athletic Director Ralph Dalton said, “We thank Mrs. Routh and all the parents and wrestlers for organizing the collection and successfully distributing the food collected. It was a great day which combined sport and service.”

On February 1st, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) held its fourth annual fundraising breakfast at Farmingdale State College’s Knapp Hall to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The theme of this year’s breakfast was Super Bowl of Smarts. The scholarship, named after the late founder of SBPLI, is made possible for up to four years, with

an amount of $1,000 per semester. Among the requirements for students to become eligible are enrollment in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island robotics program while in high school for at least two years; a combined SAT score of 1100 or better; and enrollment in Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs in Mathematics,

Engineering Technology, Computer Systems or related fields of study. All scholarship applications are due by March 1st. The winning recipient will be named at the 14th annual Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, which will take place on April 4th-6th at Hofstra University.

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals For Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island with the children and teen programs of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower). In recent years Pedals for Progress has shipped 25,450 bikes to Nicaragua and 5,833 to Ghana, as well as thousands of bikes to Guatemala, Uganda and El Salvador. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14

Grand Opening Gala The newly renovated Suffolk Theater will hold The Party of the Year with their Grand Opening Gala on Saturday, March 2nd. The Back To The Thirties cocktail party, featuring Grammy winning Vince Giordana and his Nighthawks Orchestra, will celebrate the gilded age of the era. The celebration starts at 6 p.m. and includes complimentary drinks, dancing, delectable food, signature cocktails, costumed characters, video entertainment and many more surprises. Dress of the 1930s era is encouraged. The art deco Suffolk Theater opened in December 1939, and was described as the most beautiful theater on Long Island. After many years of providing entertainment the theater was forced to close its doors in 1987, due to the shifting economy and the birth of the multiplex. Setting idle for the next 18 years, Bob and Dianne Castaldi purchased it in 2005 with the vision of creating a

state of the arts performing arts center. After years of planning and negotiations, and the support of the local government, the town board and the community, the theater will breathe with life once again. The theater has been meticulously restored and transformed into a flex space, state of the art, theatrical performance venue. Except for the replaced carpet, the interior of the theater is exactly as it was in 1933. The theater interior flourishing, woodlandmotif murals and carvings, mosaic water fountain, woven wall coverings and crane-etched windows are all intact. the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive. This is appreciation. This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them. Carpe Diem always… Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

With less than two weeks remaining, Alan Alda and the Stony Brook University Center for Communicating Science (CCS) are challenging scientists to explore a fundamental question asked by 11 year-olds: What is time? Scientists have until midnight (EST) March 1st to submit written, graphic or video entries that discuss the nature of time in ways that would interest and enlighten an 11-year-old. About 20,000 schoolchildren from around the world already are signed up to judge the entries. The winners will get a trip to New York City, where they will be honored at the World Science Festival on June 2nd. Details, rules and the entry form can be found at www. FlameChallenge.org. Actor and science advocate Alan Alda, a founding member of the Center for Communicating Science,

noted that the question “What is time?” is a deep one. “I hope that what the scientists do is not take this as a challenge to explain the inexplicable, but to explore the mysterious,” Alda said. The Flame contest began last spring with Alda’s own childhood query: What is a flame? This year, the contest collected hundreds of questions from current 11-year-olds. Several asked “what is time?” or related questions, such as: How would you make a time machine? Why can’t you go back in time? Why does everyone age? How can you tell what time it is without looking at a clock? How many dimensions are there? How did time begin? “We don’t expect you to have the definitive answer,” said Elizabeth Bass, CCS director. “We would like entries to explore the nature of time from any scientific perspective – from

physics to psychology, chemistry to computer science. Speculation is fine, as long as it’s clear you’re speculating. If you can intrigue kids, teach them something, and make them want to know more about the nature of time, that’s terrific.” Last year, in the first year of the Flame Challenge, scientists around the world submitted hundreds of answers. The winning entry, a cartoon video with an original song, was created by Ben Ames, a physics doctoral student at the University of Innsbruck.
