A new exhibit at the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library that displays medical instruments and objects from the mid-1800s to the 1980s illustrates the evolution of modern medicine. A concept initiated by the Suffolk County Historical Society, Healthcare Instruments – Past and Present was developed in partnership with the Stony Brook University Libraries and Stony Brook Medicine. The exhibit showcases instruments from the collection of the late Dr. R.Sherman Mills of Setauket, a family physician on Long Island who practiced medicine from the 1940s to early 1980s. The exhibit opened September 13th, and will be on display for the entire 2012-2013 academic year. Currently 40 medical Continued On Page 5

Dear Readers,
For More Information Call: 631-226-2646 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet. Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give. To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures. They put us humans to shame.” Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household. Readers, can you give Dharma the opportunity to live the kind of life that she deserves to have? Her suffering has touched me deeply. Please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 631.286.4940 and consider opening your hearts and home to this gentle loving girl. I would love to hear from the special person who adopts Dharma. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it. Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons. Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it
comes to using them. But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all? Why, that would be Siri. Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality. Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get. I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-
bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!” Hysterical laughter. Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on. Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.” Apparently, we were now friends. With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now! Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

Dr Keirns pointed out that until the beginning of the 20th Century, health care from birth to death generally happened at home, even surgery and especially childbirth. The Visiting Doctors display features items like an umbilical scissors (circa 1940s), a metal either mask (circa late 1800s), and Dr. R. Sherman Mills’ doctor’s bag, which he used for house calls into the 1980s. Late 19th and early 20th Century medical instruments used to treat infectious diseases and exhibited in the Diptheria and Whooping Cough display are powerful reminders of the dangers of diseases such as Continued On Page 11

said that these advances evolved into a new emphasis on preventing infectious diseases. Items in the display such as a diphtheria kit (circa 1920s) and a vapocresolene lamp (circa 1880s) used to treat whooping cough and other throat ailments are instruments no longer in use. The Hazards of the Job display shows what tools doctors used in trauma medicine before emergency rooms and EMT teams became a routine part of medical practice during the 20th Century. On Long Island, the workplace environment in the 1800s and part of the 1900s posed serious risk for injury in industries such ship building, maritime work, oystering and fishing, agriculture and manufacturing. In ignorance our acts do sometimes undo what love and caring took long to accrue We learn from no teacher or books from any shelf to think, act or feel like another, just ourselves It is for this reason misunderstandings will arise that influence our judgment and cloud up our eyes When we stare into a mirror and look upon our face we should examine it deeply like a telescope through space

We view the faults of others so easily some days that we fail to see ourselves in the shortcomings of their ways With the knowledge of how our thoughts create actions, we are enlightened our lives become simplified our love becomes heightened We are spirits here to grow in loving wisdom from our birth and God gave us each other to ease this passage through earth

History Of Healthcare Exhibit Continued From Page 11 wagon or a serious laceration to a limb at the work place often led to amputation. Dr. Keirns said that changing technologies, work patterns, and improved medical practices made loss of limbs and death from accidents much less common over time. An illustration of this progress is exhibited by a surgical saw that was used into the 1980s for
amputations, in contrast with a 21st Century fixator that trauma surgeons at Stony Brook University Hospital routinely use to save limbs. Some items in the displays indicate the similarities of certain medical practices decades ago to today’s practices. Objects like a reflex hammer (circa 1960s), Red Cross gauze (circa 1950s-60s), and a German made blood pressure kit
from World War I are nearly the same or precursors of today’s instruments used in the delivery of care. Over the next three years, the Stony Brook University Libraries, Stony Brook Medicine, and Suffolk County Historical Society will jointly present additional themed exhibits of “Healthcare Instruments - Past and Present.”

there is nothing funny about family violence.” Ms. Sanders goes on to say “hitting and controlling another human being is not acceptable behavior. We cannot and won't go back.” “It seems this year, not a single week goes by that the media (television, radio or newspapers) reports that another victim of domestic violence has lost their life. This loss of life not only affects those families but is a safety issue for our

communities. While our agencies are overwhelmed with requests for assistance, we struggle financially to provide those services which keep our communities safe. We are very committed to making Suffolk County a safe community where people can live lives free of violence,” said Aileen Fitz, Executive Director of Brighter Tomorrows. “The Battered Women’s Movement has made great strides for justice, and there is more protection
and understanding for victims than we could have predicted 20 or 30 years ago. Unfortunately, domestic violence has not d i s a p p e a r e d . Commemoration Day mourns those who were killed, honors survivors, celebrates our progress, and challenges us to do more,” said Pamela Johnston, Executive Director of VIBS Family Violence & Rape Crisis Center.

The Undergraduate Biology Program, which sponsored the participation of the three Stony Brook professors in the Summer Institute, is preparing to create a new interdisciplinary specialization in quantitative biology, for which Professor La Camera will contribute a new undergraduate course. “For me, the real objective of higher education is to learn critical thinking skills that can be applied to any problem outside the classroom,” said Professor La Camera. “At the Summer Institute, we applied the principles of ‘active learning’ and ‘scientific teaching’ to create a teaching module about the use of logarithms in biology,” he said. “The experience gained will be invaluable in helping me successfully launch this exciting new educational initiative.”

colleges and over 100 businesses throughout the state will now have the resources to further develop job training programs that will meet the emerging needs of manufacturers across the state. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said, “These federal grants are part of the Obama administration's ongoing commitment to strengthening American businesses by strengthening the American workforce. This strategic investment will enhance ties among community colleges, universities, employers and other local partners while ensuring that students have access to the skills and resources they need to compete for high-wage, high-skill careers.” The initiative complements President Obama's broader goals to help ensure that every American has at least one year of postsecondary education and the U.S. has the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. Through this initiative, each state plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will receive at least $2.5 million in dedicated funding for community college career training programs. U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer said, “This multi-million dollar federal investment is a game-changer that will connect unemployed New Yorkers with the state’s top employers that are ready to hire skilled workers in their own backyard. As I toured the state this year and met with business leaders

Suffolk County Community College today announced that it was among 24 SUNY community colleges to receive funds for job expansion through workforce training and local employer partnerships. A consortium of SUNY community colleges has received $14.6 million as part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and will use this funding to develop new classes and certification programs, bring new technology into labs, and expand the availability of internships and externships at local manufacturing businesses. The programs supported by these funds are designed to improve retention and achievement rates; accelerate progress and reduce time to credential completion; and provide state-of-the-art training that meets industry needs and prepares participants for entry or advancement in targeted career pathways. The SUNY Training and Education in Advanced Manufacturing (TEAM) consortium will allow SUNY community colleges, including Suffolk County Community College, to establish permanent worker training programs for eligible New Yorkers in the field of advanced manufacturing. Once established, these training programs are expected to train at least 3,000 individuals statewide. This announcement is critical to closing the gap between the hundreds of available jobs in these industries and the documented lack of skilled local workers to fill those positions. SUNY

AARP Foundation TaxAide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers across the state to help New York taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2012 tax returns. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses. They help taxpayers at sites around the state, learning new skills while giving back to countless communities. “This year, we’ve assisted thousands of people in preparing and filing their tax returns,” said Will Stoner, Associate State Director on Long Island. “We could not do it without our volunteers, who make an indelible mark on the communities they help.” Last year, more than 1,800 Tax-Aide volunteers helped over 113,000 taxpayers across the state. They join the more than 35,000 Tax-Aide volunteers across the country, helping millions of taxpayers each year. For more information on how you can join the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide team, visit: www.aarp.org/tavolunteer 8 AARP Foundation TaxAide is offered in conjunction with the IRS.

THE COMPOMERS ARE HERE QUESTION: Are there any new advances in filling material? ANSWER: For many years dentists were limited in their selection of filling materials to gold, silver amalgam alloys or various tooth colored materials that left room for improvement. This challenge for improvement has led dental researchers to develop new products including glass ionomers which showed excellent biocompatibility, good adherence to tooth structure, good marginal sealing, and thermal expansion quite like natural teeth. Glass ionomers were capable of extended fluoride release to reduce tooth decay and demonstrated shades and translucency very close to natural teeth. Recent technology has combined these glass ionomers with other materials to make even better materials. They are known as "compomers." Compomers are hardened by a special light and exhibit excellent esthetic, durability and manipulative properties that were hard to achieve with conventional glass ionomers. From the office of

To help ease the transition of a new school year, new school and a new principal, the fourthgraders in Jessica Zimmer and Jessica Percevejo’s class at Deauville Gardens East School in Copiague worked as a class to interview Principal Joseph Buccello. In preparation for writing their “Meet the New Principal” stories, the
students read famous biographies, then brainstormed questions and grouped them into categories such as overall favorites, health and job. During the 30-minute interview with Mr. Buccello, the students learned that his favorite food is pizza, his favorite school subject when he was their age was science and, if he won $1 million,

Copiague fifth-graders are choosing to make their mark on the world this year. Students in Jennifer Wolford’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School celebrated International Dot Day on September 15th by expressing themselves and how they plan to make a difference in the world. To prepare for their culminating project, the
students read Peter Reynolds’ “The Dot,” which encourages people to “make a mark and see where it takes you.” They also videoconferenced with Mr. Reynolds, who told the students to visualize the person they want to be and make it happen. Additionally, the students held class discussions, participated in interactive writing projects and created their

Getting Through The Annual Reminders Memory writes on every page of the calendar – here a birthday, there a holiday, further on a wedding date. In the wake of death, those precious days bear a bittersweet tinge, a pang that the celebration they mark will never be the same. Most of those dates are warmed by tender recollections: some are written darker than the rest. Whether this is your first turn around the calendar – or one of many since your loss, these dates loom dark on the horizon. Tears that you thought were behind you swell again, with them comes a terrible loneliness. These days will not be wished away, even if you pull the covers over you and wait for the sun to set. Perhaps nothing you can do will make them easy for you, but there is a lot you can do to make them easier to endure. You can meet these milestones head-on and make them into an experience, which will help you toward a brighter tomorrow. Reach out to others who may have the same feelings about the day. Don’t hesitate to present your needs and ask for companionship and help. I am one of those types of people who always grins and bears it and goes it alone. But on several occasions when the burden was to heavy and I did ask for help, I was so glad I had someone to lean on and help me through my difficult days. Don’t be as thick as I am and don’t be afraid to ask for help from all those friends who said, “If there is ever anything I can do to help. 244239N0926

Wait One More Day! When a person passes away, families often rush to go to the funeral home to make arrangements. Sometimes they may not have had a good sleep the night before, especially if someone dies during the night. Then there are the relatives and friends who might have to come a long distance to attend the funeral. Added to that, is the stress of making dozens of phone calls to notify people of their loss. If at all possible, it is sometimes wise and less stressful, to take that extra day to adjust to the loss and properly prepare for the arrangement the next day. You need to get some rest, make the calls, choose the clothing, and gather mementos, such as photos and other cherished items, for the wake. Taking that extra time can often help to alleviate some of the stress and make you more prepared for the wake.

Ingrid Archaga’s sixthgrade students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School (PAMES) wrote letters to a member of the New York City Police Department’s Joint Terrorism Task Force on September 11th, thanking him for keeping people out of harm’s way. Center, entitled September 11th: Personal Stories of Transformation. One account centered on the principal of a nearby school who led her students out of harm’s way before learning that her own sister was lost in one of the towers. Principal Ada Dolch went on to raise funds to open a school in Afghanistan to teach young children there to respect other people’s differences. Students also read a book about 9/11 and created colorful illustrations of police officers, which they included with their letter. Other classes at PAMES
held activities to recognize Patriot Day and the events of 9/11, including Jennifer Colavito’s students, who developed a cluster web using links from a PowerPoint presentation shown on the class SMART Board. Ms. Colavito’s students brainstormed together to collaboratively answer the question “What can I do to help?” Schools throughout Amityville held brief ceremonies during the day, accompanied by moments of silence and reflection, as well as classroom discussions.
