January 2013 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Long Island Blue Jays Junior Drum Inc., making this corps the second oldest continuous drum and bugle corps in the state of New York. Over the years, they have been helping youth, ages 1019, with advancement in playing brass and percussion instruments in the field of marching music. Some of these members want to learn to play a second instrument, while others are beginners with no musical experience. They are currently recruiting members for the corps. EARLY DETECTION OF MOUTH CANCER QUESTION: How does oral cancer compare to other cancers? ANSWER: Like other cancers, the successful treatment of cancer of the mouth depends on early detection. This is another good reason to visit your dentist regularly, at least twice a year. Of all the major diseases that can cause death, cancer is one of the most curable – provided treatment begins when the disease is still in its early stages. This means either before symptoms appear or very soon thereafter. You see, in the mouth there are lesions (areas of attacked tissue) that are known to be pre-cancerous. These are almost as readily detectable as skin cancer. Generally, the occurrence is about three times as common in men as women. Contributing factors in mouth cancers are first and foremost, chronic irritations – whether from badly fitting dentures, broken or jagged edges of teeth or fillings – chewing tobacco and excessive pipe smoking. I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. Ron’s father, Ralph Forman, who coached soccer and wrestling, was a member of last year’s inaugural induction class. Additionally, the AMHS track was renamed after longtime assistant coach Donald “Jerry” Pollock. Mr. Pollock, who currently serves as the treasurer of the AMHS Sports Hall of Fame Committee and the assistant boys track coach

to head coach and Hall of Fame Committee chairman Reynolds Hawkins, was pleasantly surprised by his fellow committee members’ gesture. Mr. Pollock had also assisted inductee Norm Maisel (who called him “the greatest assistant coach ever”) with the wrestling squad. Mr. Hawkins, who was one of the driving influences that made the Hall a reality, along with Mr. Pollock, gave a sentimental speech about the impact that great student-athletes can have on people. He shared his own experience of overhearing a conversation between two men in a barber shop who were admirably recalling two great athletes from their youth and the influence they left on other student-athletes. Those athletes were Mr. Hawkins’ father and uncle. While many legends – such as Homer Ball, Joe Valla and Walter Kretz – have passed away, family and friends took to the podium in their honor, including brothers Bruce and Bobby Pescitelli, who paid homage to their father, inductee Pat Pescitelli. Bruce took on double duty for the evening, also serving as the evening’s master of ceremonies. Others, such as former Dallas Cowboy John Niland who still lives in the Dallas area, could not be present due to prior commitments. Yet more recent stars – Maxvel Rose, Christine Ho and Amityville Board of Education trustee Ron Moss – were present to give thanks for their induction and the opportunity to shine on the field of play. Mr. Moss was selected to the All-Long Island football squad, broke a longstanding AMHS distance record as a member of the track team, and was a New York State

Heavyweight Class Champion in wrestling, holding a record that has yet to be broken. “It's an honor to have your successes as an athlete recognized by the community and the dedicated supporters of the Amityville High School Sports Hall of Fame,” he remarked. “Everything I accomplished here, I accomplished through hard work and determination, principles that were instilled in me by some great coaches, including Lou Howard, Vic Niemi, Eric Moyer and fellow inductee Norm Maisel.” In addition to Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Pollack and Bruce Pescitelli, Claude Byer and Jessica Bernius round out the AMHS Sports Hall of Fame Committee. The group looks forward to continuing the newly formed tradition of honoring excellence, commitment and sportsmanship in and around the Amityville athletic fields.

Amityville High School hosted a weeklong celebration to allow students to show their school pride and spirit leading into Homecoming 2012. Sandwiched in between Spirit Week – which consisted of celebrations such as “Neon Day,” “Crazy Hair Day,” “Twin Day” and the school pep rally – and the annual homecoming day parade and game was an Amityville Memorial High School Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The formal induction saw 17 AMHS athletes, coaches and athletic program supporters honored and canonized for their great contributions in years past. As for the current AMHS Warriors, the varsity football squad led impressively for most of the game, yet victory eluded them thanks to a 20-point Rocky Point High School Eagles comeback resulting in a 33-32 overtime loss.
