BHS Students Become Teachers For A Day

Members of Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Science National Honor Society (SNHS) recently visited Babylon Memorial Grade School to teach fifth-grade students a hands-on lesson titled “Air Really Matters.” Part of the Next Generation Science curriculum, the handson lesson allowed young learners to explore the characteristics of matter while the visit provided high school students with the opportunity to step into the role of educators, showcasing their creativity and leadership skills.

The idea for the

collaboration originated during a K-12 science curriculum committee meeting, where SNHS advisor Ashley Jones saw an opportunity to combine leadership development for high school students with an enriching science experience for younger learners. The high school students planned and implemented the lesson, ensuring all fifth graders were both challenged and supported, regardless of their ability levels. The impact of the lesson was evident as fifth graders enthusiastically participated in the activities

and later expressed their gratitude through thankyou cards.

“Ms. Jones played a pivotal role in organizing and preparing for the event, ensuring its success,” said Dr. Marissa Scholl, director of science and technology at the high school. “This collaboration not only deepened the fifth graders’ understanding of science but also empowered the high school students to develop leadership skills in a meaningful and impactful way.”

Tips To Overcome Seasonal Allergies

Spring and summer are typically welcomed with open arms. Warm weather, blooming flowers and trees full of leaves are a welcome sight for many, but seasonal allergy sufferers may find the transition from winter to spring a little more challenging.

The Center for Health Statistics found that just under 26 percent of adults and roughly 19 percent of children have a seasonal allergy. Treatments for seasonal allergies can be effective, and many people find over-the-counter medications are enough to alleviate their symptoms. But even people who take OTC medications daily may have days when seasonal allergies cause considerable discomfort. In such situations, allergy sufferers can consider these strategies.

• Identify your triggers.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology notes that pollen is the most common outside allergy trigger. Trees and grasses typically pollinate in spring and summer, which is why these seasons can be especially challenging for people with seasonal allergies. Dustmites and pets

might trigger allergies indoors, but these can appear throughout the year. A visit to an allergist can determine what exactly triggers seasonal allergies. For example, certain types of grasses and trees might be triggers for some but not others. Identifying triggers is an effective first step because it can compel people to avoid the things that cause allergic reactions.

• Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The Mayo Clinic advises seasonal allergy sufferers to stay indoors on dry, windy days, when pollen can be nearly impossible to avoid.

• Take advantage of a good rain. The Mayo Clinic advises that the best time for seasonal allergy sufferers to be outside is after a good rain. Rain helps to clear pollen from the air, so post-rain conditions can be ideal for people with seasonal allergies.

• Change your clothes and wash up upon coming inside. The ACAAI recommends changing clothes, washing them and taking a shower

North Babylon Lions Bark In The Park Fundraiser

upon coming inside during allergy season. Washing clothes and taking a shower reduces the likelihood that you’ll spread pollen around the interior of your home, where it can attach to furniture and trigger allergic reactions.

• Monitor the pollen count. As noted, pollen is a seasonal allergy trigger, so allergy sufferers are urged to monitor the pollen count via a website such as Pollen.com, where visitors can type in their ZIP code and get an up-to-date allergy report. On days when the pollen count is high, stay indoors and keep windows closed so the pollen does not get inside. The Mayo Clinic notes that pollen counts tend to be highest in morning, so it’s best to avoid being outside during this time of day. Seasonal allergies can make spring and summer more challenging. A few simple strategies can help people control their seasonal allergies even on days when pollen counts are particularly high.

Did You Know?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that pollen season is getting longer and increasing in intensity. Shifts in precipitation patterns, more frost-free days, warmer seasonal air temperatures, and greater amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, each of which are side effects of climate change, have led to higher concentrations of pollen in the air and longer pollen seasons. Data from the USA National Phenology Network, which provides data on the timing of seasonal events in plants and animals to ensure the well-being of humans, ecosystems and natural resources, indicates total pollen counts increased by as much as 21 percent between 1990 and 2018. Such data may come as no surprise to people with asthma and seasonal allergies who have noticed the side effects of such conditions tend to start earlier than in the past and extend for longer periods of time than in previous years.

Town Of Babylon To Host Career Fair For High School Students, Young Adults Event To Focus On Career Opportunities

For Those Not Attending College Aimed At Filling Future Workforce Shortages

Town of Babylon

Councilmen Anthony Manetta and Terence McSweeney are excited to announce their 2025 Career Fair, an invaluable opportunity for high school students, young adults, recent graduates, and families to explore potential career paths and connect with industry professionals. The event will take place on April 30th , from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, at the Town Hall Annex Gym, located at 281 Phelps Lane, North Babylon.

The Career Fair will focus on providing career guidance and job opportunities for students and young adults who may not be pursuing traditional college paths. Attendees will have the chance to meet representatives from trade unions, first responder agencies, healthcare organizations, and a variety of local private sector companies

offering promising career options.

Councilman Manetta, who also is Chairman of the Town of Babylon Small Business Committee, cites a 2023 survey conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York that highlights the need to fill the pending workforce shortages across the region, “Worker shortages are a significant issue on Long Island, with nearly a third of businesses identifying hiring and compensation as top concerns in the 2023 Long Island Economic Survey. Factors driving worker shortages include an aging population, a lack of affordable housing, and a high cost of living.

Tyler McNamara Participates In Japanese Honor Project

North Babylon High School 10th grade student

Tyler McNamara and social studies teacher Alexandra Belyea recently visited Comsewogue High School to participate in a Japanese Honor Project hosted by the Suffolk County High School Principals Association. McNamara, along with students from other high schools, virtually presented Japanese good luck flags (Yosegaki Hinomaru) to the Obon Society.

These flags, given to Japanese soldiers during World War II, were often taken by American soldiers and brought back as souvenirs. The Obon Society works to return them to their rightful families in Japan.

During a Zoom meeting, students spoke with the founders of the Obon Society and learned that these flags are sometimes the only connection to soldiers missing in action. After the

discussion, McNamara and Ms. Belyea were interviewed for an upcoming independent film by Bill Donahue, the project’s facilitator. This

experience demonstrated how history shapes the human experience and showed the significance of cultural perspectives on war.

Business leaders noted difficulties in attracting workers to Long Island and recruiting employees with specialized or technical skills.” 1

“This event is an excellent resource for young people and their families to learn about career paths that do not require a four-year degree,” said Councilman Manetta. “We are bringing together local manufacturing companies, trade unions, and professionals to help connect our students to good-paying, stable jobs right here on Long Island.”

The Long Island Federation of Labor, AFLCIO, and the Building and Construction Trades

Council of Nassau & Suffolk Counties, AFLCIO, and the Town of Babylon Chamber of Commerce Collaborative are partnering to present this important event. Their collaboration

ensures a wide range of career options are available, including opportunities in skilled trades, emergency services, and healthcare. Get Involved During Global Volunteer Month This April

Global Volunteer Month, celebrated in April, is a time to honor volunteers while encouraging volunteering in communities around the world.

This annual celebration is especially pertinent right now. According to a Pew Research report, only 54% of Americans feel a connection to others near them.

“Communities around the country are facing increased needs at a time when many people are feeling more isolated. Volunteering fills the gaps to strengthen community and the fabric of our society,” says Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to increasing volunteer service.

But as Sirangelo points out, volunteering doesn’t just build healthier and more equitable communities, it’s also

good for the individuals who are lending their time and talents. “Engaging in volunteer activities has been identified as an effective way to build confidence, alleviate anxiety and depression, and provide a sense of purpose and connection,” she says.

Here are some ways you can take action this Global Volunteer Month and beyond:

Take the Pledge: Let your community know you are committed to volunteering and service by taking the Points of Light’s Global Volunteer Month Pledge. With nearly 50% of volunteer postings going unfilled, your participation can help meet critical community needs and ensure essential services are delivered. Already committed to a cause you care about? Take this opportunity to deepen your engagement. Commit to one extra

volunteer project a month, or consider taking on a leadership position with an organization you work with.

Thank a Volunteer: Volunteers are the heartbeat of strengthening communities, and throughout the month, you can help recognize the vital role they play. Thank a volunteer or organization that is making an impact in your community starting on April 1 and throughout the month using the hashtag #ThankAVolunteer.

Spread the Word: Use social media to spread the word about the importance of volunteering using hashtags like #GlobalVolunteerMonth. To inspire others to take action, share your own volunteer story using #WhyIVolunteer.

Get Started: Not sure how to get started or where your efforts will make the biggest social impact? Visit

This enormous database allows you to search for volunteer opportunities in your city or zip code based on your interests. Whether you’re volunteering on

your own, with coworkers, or with family, you’ll be sure to find an opportunity that’s right for you. “Volunteering is needed more than ever before. This April, we are urging everyone to join us in

taking action. Lend your time, talent and passion to making a real difference in your own neighborhood and to creating a better world,” says Sirangelo. (StatePoint)

Did You Know?

Earth Day is now a global event, but its origins are somewhat humble. Prior to the 1960s, awareness of the link between public health and pollution was minimal. However, according to EarthDay.org, the 1962 publication of Silent Spring by American marine biologist, writer and conservationist Rachel Carson was a watershed moment for the environmental movement. The book did much to raise awareness of the effects of pollution on public health. Indeed, the publication of Carson's book proved a pivotal step toward the eventual establishment of Earth Day in 1970, which EarthDay.org characterizes as the dawn of the modern environmental movement. April 22, 2025 is Earth Day!
