He resigned from the LIA earlier that year and accepted a job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Following his death, Elaine and Dan, who is now 14, moved back to their home on Long Island after Elaine accepted a position at Stony Brook University as Vice President for External Relations.

The Stony Brook University School of Journalism received a $50,000 gift from Elaine Crosson and her son Daniel, to establish The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship In Journalism which will endow a scholarship to support young journalists who wish to carry on the pursuit of public affairs journalism and advance public discourse for which the late Matt Crosson was so well known.

A portion of the funding comes from donations from family and friends, and the full $50,000 will be matched by a special grant to Stony Brook University by Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, resulting in an impact of $100,000. The endowment will continue to be funded with additional donations from the community.

“Cutting Edge,” is a professor. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a demonstrated interest in public affairs.

The recipient will also have the opportunity to intern at Newsday or at News 12 Long Island and Newsday.com or a special rotating internship at all three news outlets. One recipient per year beginning in the Fall 2013 academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard Schneider.

“This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting students, year-after-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest,” said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important.”

“This is not only a

wonderful development for our program but wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name,” said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. That, of course, is also the goal of journalism.”

Have you given up on those promising New Year’s resolutions yet? Has your self-proclaimed “fresh start” gone by the wayside already? Two days in, and you’re wishing for 2014?

Funny as it sounds, this is precisely the mentality many have when it comes to their failed attempts to remake their lives. One and done, so to speak, which is silly when you consider there are 365

days in a year, with countless opportunities for derailment during each and every one of them.

Odds are, complications will arise at some point.

Sure, there are days when frustrations are bound to get the better of us. Weeks even. But what is life if not a journey laid out before us, with twists and turns along the way?

Some choose to stay the course, while others prefer the road less traveled – it all depends upon our respective mentalities, which, as we all well know, can change moment to

moment.

The New Year is just another one of those days, for better or worse. It is what you choose to make of it, to a point. Only certain things are within our control; other aspects need be left up to fate.

After all, what’s that they say about “the best laid plans”? Exactly. Don’t bother making them.

So maintain that sense of optimism. Don’t despair quite yet. There are precisely 363 more days left to get it right.

If advance planning could relieve your family from the worry of making important decisions during a stressful time, would you do it? Though baby boomers in particular are saying that planning a funeral in advance offers them peace of mind, many others also find it beneficial.

Americans are discovering the emotional and financial benefits of planning funerals in advance. By preplanning a funeral for themselves or a loved one, people find comfort in knowing that the funeral reflects individual wants and needs. It also gives families an opportunity to create a more meaningful funeral by giving everyone involved a chance to have input into what kind of funeral service will be planned, and whether earth burial or cremation

is preferred. Making these decisions in advance can prevent family discord at an already difficult time.

The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) recommends that families considering preplanning, talk with a reputable funeral director who can discuss all the options and necessary decisions. Once plans have been made, all documents should be kept in a safe place. It is also advisable to inform a family member or close friend where the information may be found.

Preplanning a funeral does not necessarily involve prepaying. Either way, NFDA President R. Doggett Whitaker Jr., CFSP, says that families should not be reluctant to ask questions when making prearrangements, especially if they also plan to prefund the funeral.

Advance Planning Can Bring Peace of Mind

Handmade cloth dolls were constructed by volunteer sewers, and Katherine brought the dolls with her to the hospital when she went for treatments.

Katherine found comfort in the simple toy and shared her fabric companions with other children, thus beginning a beautiful movement. The program has now

expanded to include children in a variety of settings worldwide, and in December 2011, the Giving Doll reached a milestone with 10,000 dolls donated.

For the project, led by teacher Cindy Adriaenssens, more than 60 Deer Park students came together to craft the delicate tote bags that hold the doll accessories.

Deer Park Robert Frost Middle School students responded to the call for help this holiday season by launching Operation Shoebox. This community service project benefited Babylon residents who were adversely affected by Superstorm Sandy and was done in partnership with the local organization Neighbors

Helping Neighbors Babylon.

Led by teacher Lindsay Baudier, students selected the gender and age of a person in need and filled a shoebox with respective items that may bring some cheer and help fulfill life’s necessities.

Christmas Family Festival

On Sunday, December 9th, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center hosted their 4th Annual Christmas Family Festival at Timber Point Country Club in Great River.

This brunch was a day to celebrate the Christmas season with family, residents, staff and local community members.

Musical entertainment was provided along with many children’s craft

activities and a surprise visit from Santa.

This year we honored Mr. Robert Valli, retired Vice President HSBC, Public Banking, as well as Chairman of Our Lady of Consolation’s Foundation.

“Bob was chosen for this honor due to his long term commitment and dedication to Our Lady of Consolation as well as to his community,” stated Joseph Tomaino, President/CEO of Our

Lady of Consolation.

This event raised over $40,000 which will go directly to benefit programs and services for the residents and patients of Our Lady of Consolation. The day was enjoyed by all who attended and everyone is looking forward to kicking off the Christmas season next year at the 2013 Christmas Family Festival.
