A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment. Each person who donates a bicycle will also be asked to donate $10 per bike (tax-deductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles. Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower). In recent years Pedals for Progress has shipped 25,450 bikes to Nicaragua and 5,833 to Ghana, as well as thousands of bikes to Guatemala, Uganda and El Salvador. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood. Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in

CENTER
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Far too often, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life; the fact that, in an instant, things can change, throwing any sense of normalcy and routine into complete upheaval. Whether by the hands of Mother Nature or some otherworldly force, many of these factors are far beyond our control, making it all the more crucial that we embrace those things we do, in fact, have control over. One of my favorite films back in my high school Political Science class was Dead Poets Society, simply for the fact that its mantra of “Carpe Diem” seemed to make perfect sense. Seize the
day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest. You just never know what may be around the corner. Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down. What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;
the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive. This is appreciation. This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them. Carpe Diem always… Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

Celebrating Character Students at North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School spread love this February 14th as they participated in a variety of outreach and characterbuilding activities. The students in Kristen Pace’s Career Development Program and Michele Russo’s Life Skills class put their creativity to work using heart-shaped
cutouts, markers and crayons to make Valentine’s Day grams. The grams were sold to students and staff and delivered by the CDP and Life Skills students on Valentine’s Day to their intended recipients. Student Council members, along with their adviser Kathleen Gusmerotti, sold red carnations that were
delivered on Valentine’s Day, with all of the proceeds donated to the American Heart Association. The student-raised funds were combined with the proceeds from Go Red Day, where staff members were allowed to dress down for work on February 8th. Between both fundraisers, RMMS donated more than $300 to the AHA.

His last words to her were “I love you. For two years on this day, members of the West Babylon school community have donned purple, the color of the anti-bullying movement, to show their support for those who feel alone because they do not feel accepted. The idea is that by telling someone how you feel about them, you can change their day and make them feel less alone.
Babylon - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday February 27, 2013
Members of the West Babylon Union Free School District – including the administration and the students and staff of Forest Avenue, Tooker Avenue and South Bay elementary schools, as well as those in the junior and senior high schools – recently took part in P.S. I Love You Day. The day of awareness and acceptance was established when West Islip student Brooke DiPalma lost her father to suicide in 2010.
13
P.S. I Love You “Everyone should feel accepted and supported, commented senior Courtney Leone, president of the Leo Club, whose members ran the event at the senior high school. “We should go out of our way to spread love, tolerance and human kindness to all. It is a vital way of making our lives and the lives of others more meaningful, and it isn’t hard to do.

West Babylon Senior High School is pleased to congratulate students Ryan Flanagan and Allie Menke, who had their artwork exhibited at this year’s Advanced Visions IX: High School Artists of Excellence show. The exhibit was on view at the Hillwood Student Art League Gallery at LIU Post from December 20th, 2012 through January 30th, 2013.
A total of 55 art students from 27 different high schools in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties participated. “We are fortunate enough to have both students in our art classes, remarked teachers Christine Iaquinto and Heather Korchma. “We are extremely proud of these talented students and all of their accomplishments.

work in service to others. At the Cougar Pride Wrestling Tournament, the St. John the Baptist Wrestling Team asked all participating teams to also bring non-perishable food donations. The SJB Wrestling Team made arrangements for team members to bring all donations to the parish outreach at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst. The Wrestling Team had a great response and expects to make this part of the annual tournament tradition. The team set up boxes in the school lobby area to collect from each team when they arrived for weigh in. St. Johns had a multitude of parents and students ready to pack up the food items, and to transport them to the Parish. Boy’s Athletic Director Ralph Dalton said, “We thank Mrs. Routh and all the parents and wrestlers for organizing the collection and successfully distributing the food collected. It was a great day which combined sport and service.”

And also, the cost-conscious
The Stony Brook University School of Journalism has received the pledge of a $25,000 gift from Stony Brook Senior Vice President of Administration Barbara Chernow and her husband, William Farber, to establish The Carol Chernow Memorial Scholarship In Journalism. This gift will endow a scholarship to support the development of young writers – a lifelong goal of the late Carol Chernow’s professional career. Carol Chernow, mother of SBU Senior Vice President Chernow, was a Brooklyn-born New Yorker, educated at Brooklyn College, who taught several subjects and grade levels in New York City public schools in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Along with her husband, Fred Chernow – a New York City school principal, administrator, author and motivational speaker – Carol Chernow wrote several books on classroom teaching procedures and discipline, some of which remain in use today. However, it was literature, writing and teaching effective communication to a diverse group of children and adults that became her eventual focus and passion. Chernow believed that one powerful way to open doors and promote equal opportunity was to equip all individuals with better language skills. Beginning in 1963 with the publication of “Reading Exercises in Black History,” she turned her energies to both teaching and creating practical educational resources for individuals in various communities. She held that race, ethnic background, economic status, birth language or prior educational experience must not be barriers to learning effective communication in English for any of her students. In addition, Chernow realized that those differences offered educators the opportunity to create and utilize innovative material targeted at developing better language skills, reaching and engaging more students. “My mother believed that effective communication skills – whether through the spoken word or on paper – were the first, best

tools for anyone wishing to be successful in today’s world,” recalled Senior Vice President Chernow. “She said that people judge you on how well you speak and how well you write. This was the basis of her approach to teaching, and you could call it her affirmative action plan for her students.” The Chernow scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time student enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a proven talent and interest in writing and language. One recipient per year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism Dean, Howard Schneider. What some people forget, “says Dean Schneider, “is that even in the age of YouTube, good writing is the key to good journalism, no matter how that journalism is delivered. The Chernow scholarship will be invaluable in helping us to nurture that idea.”

The West Babylon Union Free School District recognizes the important role technology plays in providing a 21st century education and strives to be at the forefront of offering a cutting-edge learning experience. Under the leadership of Ryan Case, the district’s coordinator of student data and instructional technology, West Babylon has implemented Google Apps for Education, a program that stores and protects school data. Google Apps for Education is free for valid K-12 public schools, and providing their products to educational institutions at no cost is part of the Google mission. “There
are many benefits associated with having this program for the staff of West Babylon,” remarked Mr. Case. “The staff now has access to a free email system as well as features of Google Apps including Docs, Spreadsheets and Forms.” The implementation of this program has expanded this year to include students as well. Every student in the district now has a Google Apps for Education account and the ability to access the Google Apps system from any computer with an Internet connection. Students can store work using this system and no longer have to utilize flash drives. Mr. Case is working toward the
establishment of a “walled garden” Gmail system for students in which they are able to send and receive email messages with teachers, administrators and other students within the district system. Another benefit of the Google Apps program is the easy implementation of the program with the Samsung Chromebook laptops that will soon be available to all West Babylon students. Each school will be obtaining 30 Chromebooks to be used in classrooms or in Chromebook Writing Labs, where students will develop writing skills and take part in local and state assessments.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, and as a way to give back to their community, fifth-graders in Tara Cavanagh’s class from North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School traveled to Spangle Drive Senior Center in North Babylon and worked
alongside the seniors to create a special craft. As an extension of their art class with teacher Lisa Gregorek, the students collaborated with the seniors to create oil pastel heart Valentine’s Day cards in the vein of artist Jim Dine’s “Monotypes et
Gravures.” “This is a really great activity,” noted Ms. Cavanagh. “The seniors are so positive with the kids and the students learn to develop good relationships with adults.”

Helping Children Cope!
In order for the children to feel comfortable, they should be told, in advance, of our YOUTH LOUNGE. They should know that we have made available for them their own special room, with a Cable Television, stuffed toys, reading material, stacking blocks and more. In this way, they will know that they do not have to go anywhere that they might be uncomfortable; they have their own special room. To the Wake, they can bring their own gift of a single flower or a picture, or a poem, for them or you to place in the casket. In that way, they are also involved in the wake.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that personal registration of voters is required. If a voter has heretofore registered and has voted in an annual or special
Registration will be conducted up to and including April 4th, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on days when school is in session at the Office of the District Clerk, located at 50 Railroad Avenue, Babylon, New York.

More than 350 families have entrusted us with more than 1.5 million in pre-paid funeral funds in our community for several reasons. We believe that the most important reason so many of you have entrusted us is because of our impeccable reputation for our compassion and service to you and your family. The second reason, and almost as important reason so many families trust us is the preplanned price guarantee we give to all of our families who make pre-paid funeral arrangements with us. Simply put, we do something no other funeral home does. Once paid in full, we guarantee every aspect of the funeral costs. This means we guarantee the prices of not only all of our services and merchandise, which some but not all funeral homes do, but we also guarantee all the fees of the cemetery, church, airlines, etc. which no other funeral homes do. Simply put, once a funeral is pre-paid at Lindenhurst Funeral Home, the family never has to concern themselves with increasing costs and will never have to add funds to the funeral they have selected. If you have any questions about pre-paid funerals or any other questions please call us any time.

Hibernation Study
Kindergarten students in Susan Mahon’s class at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School have enjoyed learning about the process of hibernation. The
young students discovered what it means to hibernate, which animals participate in the practice and why, and how to use the word appropriately in a sentence. Students enhanced their
Dignity For All
learning further by reading books about hibernation and creating their own shelters for a myriad of animals that would enjoy sleeping in them during the winter.

SECOND PLACE - Kris Moran placed 2nd in the prestigious boys’ high school mile at the 106th Millrose Games on Saturday night. His time of 4:13.86 is #1 in New York State and #8 in the nation this year. Anyone who wants to watch a replay of Kris’ race can go to ESPN3.com and search Millrose Games. Also pictured is the 4th place finishing girls’ 4x400 meter relay team with Bernard Lagat, American record holder in the 1 mile, 2 mile and 5K. Great job!
On September 13th, 2010, the New York State Dignity for All Students Act (the Dignity Act) was signed into law. This legislation amended state education law by creating a new article – Dignity for All Students. The Dignity Act amended Section 801-a of New York State Education Law regarding instruction in civility, citizenship and character education. This was achieved by expanding the concepts of tolerance, respect for others and dignity to include an awareness and sensitivity in the relations of people, including but not limited to those of different races, weights, national origins, ethnic groups, religions, religious practices, mental or physical abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions and sexes. The Dignity Act also
amended Section 2801 of the education law, instructing boards of education to include language in their codes of conduct to comply with the new legislation, which went into effect on July 1st, 2012. The West Babylon Union Free School District has complied with this mandate and updated its code of conduct policies. Additionally, each building has designated DASA coordinators to oversee the initiative, and all staff members have received awareness training. A priority of West Babylon teachers has always been to maintain a climate of mutual respect and dignity for all students. The Dignity Act also ensures that teachers will confront any issues that arise which threaten the physical or emotional
health or safety of any student, school employee or person who is lawfully on school property or at a school function. Teachers are expected to address personal biases that may prevent equal treatment of all students in the school or classroom setting, as well as to report incidents of discrimination and harassment that are witnessed or otherwise brought to a teacher’s attention in a timely manner. The students of the district are doing their part as well. Throughout the year, they have been exposed to a variety of cultural arts programs, as well as student- and staffdriven events that address the issues surrounding harassment, bullying and social-emotional learning.
