collect toys for children in our local communities. Street Smartz By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense.” It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that. I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. My mother, perplexed, followed me back upstairs to check out the situation. She peered through the window. Tap. Tap. Tap. She gently knocked on the glass. Yes, the glass. Apparently, in my frustration I hadn’t noticed that, while the window was indeed open, the storm door remained

in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air. Instant classic. Oh but that wasn’t where it ended. Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite cliché and widely used. Except… I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact. Case in point: Moo point. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression. Oh, but there’s more. There was the “play it by year” debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,

what did you just say?” reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense. I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes…play it by year…get it?” Apparently not. Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from? One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along. See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

The $7,000 grant supports the district’s ideal of a sound body, mind and soul in school. Local Artist Chosen Long Island native, Elaine Faith Thompson has been chosen by Bruno Event Team to paint and design the commemorative poster for the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. The Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th-30th, 2013, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton. Thompson is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she is presently working every day to complete the painting in time for holiday gifts. Thompson painted the commemorative painting of Bethpage in 2002 and worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. Feast & Festivities

Second-graders from Babylon Elementary School performed Thanksgiving-themed songs and enjoyed a holiday feast on November 21st in the school cafeteria. The students performed “The Thanksgiving Boogie” and “The 12 Days of Thanksgiving” in front of an adoring audience of Babylon Elementary School kindergarteners,

then dined on tasty Thanksgiving treats. Many of the second-graders got into the holiday spirit by wearing decorative Pilgrim and Indian hats they had crafted during art class. The Thanksgiving celebration is an annual event at Babylon Elementary School, and school principal Dana Basile used this year’s feast to lend a helping

hand to Babylon families that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. While the students were given the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company, Mrs. Basile also set aside a portion of the event to offer the second-graders a chance to brainstorm new ideas on how they can help Babylon families in need this Thanksgiving.

Giving And Growing First-grade teachers Laura Fitzgerald and Laura DeSa of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District reinforced the concept of giving with their students while assisting members of the West Babylon community. The first-grade teachers

and their students united to donate Thanksgiving turkey dinner baskets for two West Babylon families in need. The teachers provided the gift cards for the turkeys while the children brought in vegetables, gravy, stuffing, corn bread mix and brownie mix to complete the meal.

“This is an important lesson for the students,” remarked Ms. Fitzgerald. “It brings to life the concepts of community taught in first grade while reinforcing and supporting the character education lessons that are such an important part of their development.”
