They help taxpayers at sites around the state, learning new skills while giving back to countless communities. “This year, we’ve assisted thousands of people in preparing and filing their tax returns,” said Will Stoner, Associate State Director on Long Island. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella invites residents to attend the Town’s 33rd Annual All Car Friendship Meet, scheduled for Sunday, October 7th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. “Since their invention, cars have had a unique ability to bond people together,” Councilman Muscarella said. “Enthusiasts appreciate the aesthetic beauty of automobiles, as well as their distinct history.” Councilman Muscarella noted that reminiscing about the family’s automobiles or dad’s

favorite sports car, is an unmistakable component of Americana. “When attending events like the Town’s All Car Friendship Meet, conversations invariably center upon vacations spent driving in the family vehicle or the muscle car they drove as a senior in high school,” Councilman Muscarella said. “The Town is proud to host events like this because they unite participants on common ground and create last friendships.” The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks, Division of Recreation, is hosting this event, which is being co-sponsored by

The event features vintage automobiles dating back to 1927 and is supported by All Car Club in Oyster Bay. “The Town’s All Car Friendship Meet is always a great family day at Marjorie R Post Community Park,” Councilman Muscarella said. “I invite all car owners and car enthusiasts to come to the park. Dear Readers, This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet. Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give. To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures. They put us humans to shame.” Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household. Readers, can you give Dharma the opportunity to live the kind of life that she deserves to have? Her suffering has touched me deeply. Please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 631.286.4940 and consider opening your hearts and home to this gentle loving girl. I would love to hear from the special person who adopts Dharma. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

All-Car Friendship Meet

I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it. Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons. Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it

comes to using them. But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all? Why, that would be Siri. Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality. Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get. I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-

bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!” Hysterical laughter. Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on. Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.” Apparently, we were now friends. With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now! Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

(NAPSI)—You may be able to find a great used car online—if you heed a few hints: • You can search millions of used cars for sale online if you go to sites like Autotrader.com and Cars.com. • To narrow your search, consider and compare price, photos of the cars and their descriptions. • Consider the seller. Is the person or company reputable? Is it a dealer or a private seller? If it’s the latter, has this person been recommended to you by someone you know and trust? • Before you buy any used car, it’s a good idea to check the vehicle’s history with a Carfax Vehicle History Report. These can help you make better decisions about used cars. Visit www.carfax.com to get a report and learn more.

In ignorance our acts do sometimes undo what love and caring took long to accrue We learn from no teacher or books from any shelf to think, act or feel like another, just ourselves It is for this reason misunderstandings will arise that influence our judgment and cloud up our eyes When we stare into a mirror and look upon our face we should examine it deeply like a telescope through space

Brooke and her fellow students to be the recipient of 2012’s fundraising. The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.” “Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.” Suicide and suicide prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.; · It is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 14 to 19 years of age; · It is the second leading cause of death for young adults 19 – 24 years of age; · Elderly suicide rates are 50% higher than for young people; · One of every five suicides in the country is committed by a returning soldier from Iraq or Afghanistan – or once every 90 minutes; · For every suicide, there is an average of 13 suicide attempts; · 8 out of 10 people who commit suicide tell someone first. On-site registration for the Walk begins at 11 a.m. Online registration is taking place right now at www.longislandcrisiscente r.org or call 516.826.0244 for more information. A minimum donation of $25 per person is suggested. A T-shirt will be given to all who raise $50 or more.

Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together to Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach. Registration begins at 11 a.m. At 12 noon, a brief program will highlight two high school students: Jamie Isaacs and Brooke DiPalma. Jamie is a victim of intense bullying. She considers herself a strong survivor due to the fact that the bullying started when she was in second grade at 8 years old and lasted till the end of seventh grade at 13 years of age. The bullying only stopped when she transferred to the Knox School in St. James, a private school, where she is currently in 11th grade. During these years, however, she has evolved from victim to activist founding the Jamie Isaacs Foundation For AntiBullying, writing her story in the book, In Jamie’s Words, and working with both local and state legislators to pass strong anti-bullying laws. Brooke DiPalma is a student at West Islip High School who decided to address the issue of suicide prevention and awareness when her father committed suicide. She created the “P.S. I Love You” Campaign that went viral when she did a YouTube video. In the video, she asks everyone to look out and care for others who may be having suicidal thoughts. She designated a day in February in her school to be known as P.S. I Love You Day. Once she spread the word, it was adopted by many other schools, both locally and in other states. On that day, the students raise money and donate the proceeds to organizations that are work in suicide prevention. The Crisis Center was selected by

Challenger Jamboree

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the 2012 Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree at its Challenger Baseball Field located at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Saturday, October 7th, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. The widely acclaimed event will be a full day of fun for all in attendance, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with registration and concluding at 4 p.m. with a closing ceremony. “We consider it quite an honor to host this prestigious event at our beautiful Challenger Field,” Supervisor Venditto said. “In addition to providing an awesome experience for the players and their families, the event also builds awareness to advancing Challenger Baseball.” Supervisor Venditto noted that Challenger Baseball League participants, some of whom have cerebral palsy, autism or are wheelchair bound, are able to focus upon their abilities rather than their limitations. “Once they put the league uniform on, they’re all ball players,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It’s a beautiful thing for both the youngsters and their parents.” Challenger Baseball is a Little League-sanctioned program established in 1989 that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball in an environment structured to their abilities. The Town created a dedicated field to meet the special needs of the players with such features as synthetic FieldTurf, which offers a stable, uniform and shockabsorbing playing surface. The turf has the bases and pitcher’s mound marked on the surface and not raised. This enables safer and easier mobility for walkers and wheelchairs. In addition, the field has wider gate openings to

a c c o m m o d a t e wheelchairs, cement pads to facilitate access onto the field and nearby restroom access. The league enables boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 418, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide. Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as tee ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three. According to Al Friese, Commissioner of the Massapequa Coast Little League's Challenger Division, "Buddies" are utilized for the benefit of Challenger players. “The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves,” Friese said. “However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed. Parents and teenagers are frequently asked to be ‘buddies’ and find the experience to be uniquely-rewarding.” After completing a Little League volunteer application and passing a required national background check, teenagers may become buddies, while parents may become involved in practices, and be eligible as coaches, managers, umpires, local league board members and other volunteer positions within the league. According to Friese, approximately 25 teams from all over Long Island are expected to participate in the Jamboree. There will also be games, inflatable rides and food

for everyone in attendance. At 3 p.m., the Long Island Bombers, a blind softball team that utilizes a ball that beeps and bases that buzz, will compete. “It is quite impressive to see the Bombers in action,” Friese said. “They are a dedicated group of baseball enthusiasts from the Long Island and tristate area. They just happen to be blind and visually impaired. They hold rigorous practices, instructional clinics and play exhibition and competitive games against sighted and other visually impaired teams in the metropolitan area.” Supervisor Venditto indicated that the Town’s long history of supporting Challenger Baseball was a strong factor in being selected to host the 2012 Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree. “There’s no question of our commitment to youngsters with special needs,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We’re proud to host the Jamboree, but more importantly, we are proud of the youngsters who will participate. They’re ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of their dreams is an inspiration to us all.”

All-Star Game The Town of Oyster Bay will host the second annual “All-Star Game” for the members of the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s (LISSA) Division 5 at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Monday, October 1st, at 6:15 p.m. According to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone, the game will square off two 15-member teams, who average 76 years of age and feature the top players from Division 5 teams. Admission to the game is free. “The Long Island Senior

Softball Association Division 5 is comprised of a truly remarkable group of people,” Councilman Macagnone said. “What spectators often don’t realize is that many of these players have undergone some sort of life-altering medical procedure, whether it be a joint-replacement or cardiac procedure, at some point in their lifetime.” For those interested in obtaining more information about LISSA, and especially for those looking to register and participate in future

games for the league, contact Joe Friedman, Commissioner of LISSA, at 516.766.0883 or through email at joefriedman36@yahoo.co m. Participation in the Long Island Senior Softball Association is open to those 68 years or older. “I hope to see our community out at this game, to support these amazing individuals,” Councilman Macagnone said. “The members of this organization truly are a testament to the age old adage that ‘you are only as old as you feel.’”

This summer, 13 Long Island credit unions combined efforts to assist thousands of needy families and children across the region and bring an end to hunger. The collection, which ran from June 2nd to June 30th, was a huge success. Participating credit unions accepted food and monetary donations at their branches and local supermarkets throughout Long Island with all proceeds benefiting Island Harvest and Long Island Cares, Long Island’s leading hunger relief organizations. Together the credit unions collected an astonishing total of 3,460 pounds of food and $31,213.21. After six years of collection, the credit unions are proud to announce that their efforts have produced $247,570.43 and 18,040 lbs. of food for Long Island’s hungry. “The food donated by the Long Island Credit Union Cooperative has allowed us to provide 1,129 meals for families in need,” said Paule T. Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This is enough meals to feed a family of four for the entire summer.” “Summer can be an extra difficult time for families who struggle to find enough to eat, since school breakfast and lunch programs are not available,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO of Island Harvest. “Thanks to the generous efforts of each credit union, food collected will help provide much needed food assistance for children and families.” The participating credit unions included: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, The Heart Center Federal Credit Union, Island Federal Credit Union, Long Island Community Federal Credit Union, Long Island Realtors Federal Credit Union, Nassau Financial Federal Credit Union, NEFCU, North Shore LIJ Health System FCU, People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union, Sperry Federal

Caring For Granite Countertops ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use

achieve the rank of Eagle. The presence of Eldred’s relatives at the ceremony made the day even more memorable. The parade reminded folks that every Boy Scout, regardless of their rank, has the opportunity to make friends, take part in wholesome activities and prepare to be a leader and responsible citizen,” said Jay Garee, Scout Executive/CEO, TRC-BSA. Since 1912, more than two million young men have achieved the prestigious Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. In addition to Eldred, Eagle Scouts include Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, Astronaut Neil Armstrong and many other recognized leaders and contributors to society. Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, recently announced that her program will be a recipient in the 11th Annual Panera Bread 2012 Pink Ribbon Bagels campaign. The Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign, to date, has raised well over $100,000 to benefit Long Island breast cancer organizations. In addition to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, Pink Ribbon Campaign funds will be donated to Prevention Is the Cure and the Breast Cancer Research Program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Panera Bread, in partnership with WALK 97.5 who is getting the word out, will donate 25 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes. “The initiative continues to grow each year,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, Inc., franchisee for Panera Bread. “WALK 97.5 makes a big push in the fall to educate and inform listeners about breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment.” He adds, “WALK Radio

brings awareness and Panera brings the funds to help sustain critical groups here on Long Island.” To give the fundraising a healthy head start, Panera is kicking off its campaign with POWER OF PINK DAY on Monday, October 1st, more than quadrupling its donation by contributing 100% from each bagel sold to the fund. George urges businesses, organizations and individuals to call their local Panera bakery now to reserve Pink Ribbon Bagels for October 1st. According to George, every Pink Ribbon Bagel or baker’s dozen of 13 Pink Ribbon Bagels sold that day or preordered for pickup on October 1st will provide a 100% donation to the designated breast cancer organizations. On POWER OF PINK DAY, Panera will contribute $1.25 for each bagel, $9.99 for each baker’s dozen. For those who have yet to taste a Pink Ribbon Bagel, it’s a Cherry Vanilla Bagel--a brown-sugar sweetened, wholesome cranberry-cherry chip bagel—that is shaped into iconic “pink ribbons” as a symbol of hope in support of local breast cancer help organizations.

WALK 97.5’s Linda Healy, herself a breast cancer survivor, spearheads the radio station’s breast cancer advocacy efforts and reminds us that POWER OF PINK DAY provides the perfect excuse to plan a bagel party at work or with friends on October 1st. Throughout the remainder of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each Long Island bakery-cafe will continue to contribute by donating 25 cents from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold as well as $1.00 from each and every Power of Pink Baker’s Dozen - any assortment of 13 bagels that is sold that month. Last year, in partnership with WALK 97.5, Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign raised more than $26,000 over the course of the month-long campaign, including $10,000 on kick-off day. This year, the Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes are hoping to do even better - and they are counting on individuals and groups to make that happen. Anyone who is worried about breast cancer should call the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline for help at 800.877.8077. You are not alone.

1910 and in 1912, Arthur R. Eldred, of Rockville Centre, N.Y. became the very first Eagle Scout. As a young boy Eldred moved to Long Island and joined a Troop in the Nassau Council of Boy Scouts of America, in Rockville Centre and quickly achieved Scouting’s highest rank. “Parade Co-Chair Tom Fabian and I were happy the parade stepped off on time and the ceremonies that followed stayed on schedule. Despite the looming threat of rain, the day’s events amounted to the finest tribute that Council could carryout in recognition of Scouting history and the Eagle Scout Award. Having the Eldred family members present made the day very significant and memorable. Everyone was impressed by the number of boys in uniform. Seeing them march was a positive reflection of our Scouting program in Nassau County,” said Steve Herman, Eagle Centennial Parade Chair. “The parade was a highlight in our Council’s history. The thousands of Boy Scouts marching in uniform to the Arthur R. Eldred Park for a ceremony in his honor was very impressive. For 100 years scout leaders, families and friends have encouraged and supported boys here in Nassau County to follow Eldred’s example and work to

Thousands of spectators watched as 2,000 plus Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Police Explorer Scouts, Boy Scout leaders and dignitaries marched in the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade held recently in Rockville Centre. Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts of America (TRCBSA) and the National Eagle Scout Association – Arthur R. Eldred Chapter, sponsored the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade and commemorative ceremony to pay tribute to Arthur R. Eldred, the first Eagle Scout and the more than two million Eagle Scouts in America. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano spoke at the ceremony congratulating the Council, Eagle Scouts and Boy Scouts on the occasion of the 100th anniversary, recognizing that the parade symbolized the impact that the Boy Scouts of America has had on millions of boys across the nation. The ceremony paid special tribute to the Arthur R. Eldred. Several Eldred family members, who followed in Arthur’s footsteps and also attained the rank of Eagle Scout, were present, including his son Bill Eldred, two grandsons Bill Eldred and Jim Hudson and a great grandson Bobby Hitte.
