THINKING DIVORCE?
kies were threatening early on, but the weather cooperated and the spirit of generosity of sponsors and players enabled The Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise some $30,000 at their 31st Annual Golf Classic. A field of nearly 90 golfers enjoyed play on July 23rd at the Hempstead Golf & Country Club, followed by a post-outing dinner honoring Dr. Michael H. Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C. Thanks to all who came out in support of this great cause.

Film Expo Wraps Up The Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) wrapped up its fifteenth year with a starstudded closing night party and awards ceremony on Thursday, July 19th, at the Bellmore Movies. After opening music by singer Tim Hutchinson, American Idol’s Robbie Rosen sang the national anthem. Cohosted by Kevin Brown (Dot Com on 30 Rock) and Dash Mihok (Romeo and Juliet), presenters included Melissa Archer (One Life to Live), Brandon Hannan (The Sopranos), Devin Harjes (Boardwalk Empire), Robert Clohessy (Boardwalk Empire) and Jackie “the Jokeman,” Martling. Robert Vaughn (The Man From UNCLE) was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award and recounted stories of actors he’d
worked with over the years, including recommending James Coburn for his first major acting role in the Magnificent Seven. Filmmakers came in from Australia, England, Poland, Slovenia, Canada, the Philippines, all over the United States and, of course, from Long Island. I don’t get it. Why is it that, more and more, parents insist on taking their young children to movies that they have no business seeing at hours of the night when they would be better served settling in for a bedtime story? Nearly every movie that I’ve seen in the last few months has featured the background noise of a screaming, crying young child, pretty much from the opening credits onward. Seriously folks? My last movie outing had to be the best (or worst, if we’re being literal) by far. No sooner had we settled in to watch the previews when a little girl – who couldn’t have been more than three or four years old mind you – began rocking back and forth in her chair, kicking the seat in front of her (you guessed it… mine) and whining about how she wanted to get ice cream, RIGHT NOW. This little performance continued for the next three hours. Seriously. At one point, I was startled by what I thought was something crawling on me. But no, it was the tiny hand of the child, attempting

to catapult herself over the seat next to me into my row. This was shortly followed by the pitter-patter of little feet running back and forth down the aisles, all the while singing at the top of her lungs. Now, don’t get me wrong. Children are adorable and cute and all that – just not at a 10:30 movie screening of a film that clearly only the parental units were interested in seeing. And the “adults” who I assume were with her for supervision seemed unfazed by it all, simply staring straight ahead at the screen, paying no mind to the dozens of dirty looks from those in the surrounding seats. The only admonishment was the occasional, “Now if you want ice cream, you better be good honey!” Good? Honey?! It was at this point that I looked around for a hidden camera, convinced I must have been a part of the latest episode of “What Would You Do?” or some other prank show. Because, truly, there was no way that two people could be that inconsiderate of an entire movie theater full of people, right? Apparently wrong. At a certain point, my exasper-
ation turned to anger, enough so that I turned around and snapped, “Are you kidding me right now? Ever heard of a babysitter?” That seemed to quiet things down momentarily, as the two women just stared blankly back and halfheartedly told the child to sit down and behave. That lasted for all of about 10 minutes. By the end of the three hours, in between straining to hear the dialogue and being jostled in my seat by the incessant kicking, the whole situation was so absurd that it had somehow become hysterically funny. After all, this had to be a joke. On the way to our cars, we had the good fortune to run into this same trio, this time with the child galloping through the parking lot whining about – you guessed it, ice cream. As I walked by them, I just couldn’t resist. “Wow, if this is her being good, I wouldn’t want to see it when she doesn’t behave! Glad she’s getting that ice cream – sugar should make the situation much better!” Once again, I was met with a pair of blank stares. Next time, get a babysitter. Seriously.

Astoria Federal Savings will once again team up with local schools, shelters and human service organizations to distribute supplies to children in need. More families than ever are likely to find themselves in difficult financial situations this year — many for the first time — and may be unable to provide their children with school supplies, which typically cost as much as $100 per child. As a result, some children may arrive atschool this September without supplies or are forced to recycle last year’s. “Each year we are impressed by the o v e r w h e l m i n g community support for our annual Tools for School program,” said Astoria Federal Savings Executive Vice President

Soccer Festival Set
The Town of Oyster Bay will host a Soccer Festival on Saturday, August 11th, at John J. Burns Town Park, Massapequa. According to Town Supervisor John Venditto, the event will feature the NCAA men’s and women’s soccer forces from Hofstra, Fairleigh Dickinson, Stony Brook and St. John’s Universities. The NCAA women’s soccer game will begin at 4 p.m. with Hofstra University versus Fairleigh Dickinson University. The NCAA men’s soccer game will begin at 7 p.m. with Stony Brook University squaring off against St. John’s
University. “The festival, featuring NCAA men’s and women’s soccer, will showcase some of the area’s best soccer talent and will make for an entertaining day for the community to watch and enjoy,” Supervisor John Venditto said. Supervisor Venditto added that between the men’s and women’s games, there will be a Town of Oyster Bay Free Youth Clinic at 5:30 p.m., where kids can practice soccer techniques and enjoy a barbecue with players and coaches. “The sport of soccer is one of Long Island’s most popular youth
participation activities,” Supervisor Venditto said. “This festival represents the widespread appeal of the sport. It should be very popular with local residents who enjoy seeing soccer played at a fun, yet competitive, level. We hope to see our community at the games to support our local college teams.” The Supervisor noted that admission is free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger.

Skies were threatening early on, but the weather cooperated and the spirit of generosity of sponsors and players enabled The Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise some $30,000 at their 31st Annual Golf Classic. A field of nearly 90 golfers enjoyed play on July 23rd at the Hempstead Golf & Country Club, followed by a post-outing dinner honoring Dr. Michael H. Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C., the largest private neurosurgery practice on Long Island and in the New York Tristate area, which has been a sustaining sponsor of the Golf Classic, and has provided generous ongoing support for all of
The Friends major fundraising events for many years. The Golf Classic was cochaired for a third consecutive year by Joseph and Thomas Graham of Rockville Centre, co-founders of JJT Energy, a firm supplying natural gas to the commercial and residential market. Proceeds from this event will support Mercy's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only such facility on the south shore of Nassau County. Mother/Baby services are at the core of Mercy’s mission and the funds raised at the Golf Classic help to make it possible for the hospital to assist
mothers and babies throughout the community, including the less fortunate and the uninsured. Over the past five years, the Friends have raised some $1.5 million to support hospital facilities.

Taking Home The Gold Jacob Shuster, a North Shore High School student attending the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career Technical Education Center (Barry Tech), earned a gold medal at the 48th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships this June. Jason was among only 5,500 students across the country to compete in the national competition in Kansas City, Mo. Jason, who won in the pin design category, presented his design to a panel of judges from
industry, trade associations and labor organizations. The panel judged his work based on industry standards for employment. “I am very proud of Jacob’s accomplishment,” said Doris Bove-Aresta, Barry Tech advisor, and advertising and animation design teacher. “He and the other students that participated in the pin design competition are true champions in their dedication to excellence in their trade.” The SkillsUSA Championships is considered the largest
single-day corporate volunteerism event in America, with more than 1,000 industry judges participating. The effort that goes into qualifying for this competition is monumental. All Barry Tech students have a double wor load, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but satisfyin full courses of study at their home schools as well. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students work.

Brinkley Smithers, “It is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to “Beat the Pro.” With a silent auction, live auction, and dozens of raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s top courses, while the raffle features golf and vacation packages to the far-away destinations of Scotland and Southern California. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to atrisk individuals and the families who support them.” The annual fundraiser offers several participation

Artistic Adventure the entire four-week program. “The program opens up all sorts of educational opportunities that many of these students may not have experienced,” says Andrea Schubach, principal of the Summer Arts Academy. “It helps young artists to gain confidence in what they are doing and to try things they never have before, all while immersed in an environment that is supportive of their talents.” The one thing summer academy students do not experience is ennui. The burgeoning artists work collaboratively, crossing over from program to program and applying their interests in new and innovative ways. Creative writing students, for example, work with musical theater students to develop original productions, giving writers time in the spotlight and performers a
stint in the director’s chair. Musicians create original compositions for dance productions, to which dancers eventually perform. Young artists also have the opportunity to hone their craft on state-of-theart equipment, such as the audio lab where musicians can arrange their own cinematic scores to actual movie scenes, or the digital lab that allows young composers to create using leading-edge software. Students also get a taste of what professionals are currently doing, with trips to shows, museums and the like. The final week of the academy is a showcase of what the students have learned. The big finale includes a major art exhibit, the publication of a journal and an extravaganza of performances, from plays to cabarets.
professional organizer, owner of Neat Freak and member of the National Association of Professional Organizers. “The attic, for example, is an ideal place for storing certain infrequently used items such as holiday decor.” Organizational products can help you make better use of valuable space that is otherwise wasted. The new AtticMaxx™ Shelving System, for example, provides organized attic
space and easy access to stored items. The shelf system mounts between attic trusses—the triangular wooden structures used to support a pitched roof—to create vertical storage space around an attic floor. It installs in minutes with a screwdriver, a level and four screws. Visit www.AtticMaxx.com for more information and free organizing tips.

Surprisingly, according to a survey by the American Cleaning Institute, most clutter in the home is really the result of disorganization. “The majority of people have plenty of space, they just aren’t using the space wisely or efficiently,” explains Perri Kersh, a

Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. Little Shelter: As the hours went by, Sparkles would 631.368.8770 blink and snuff the air every time she heard DEMI footsteps. “Was it them? Would she be going young female Calico, home now?” Sparkles found it hard to wait. Domestic Short Hair At the end of the day, Sparkles finally heard FLO the footsteps coming to her cage - this was female Maltese it, her new people had arrived to take her home. But instead it was her old Massapequa Pet’s Vet friends. “We’re sorry, Sparkles girl, they’re not coming... They changed their minds.” They carefully unpacked her toys and gave her a hug; then they shut the lights and Sparkles was alone in the dark. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting. Please consider calling Massapequa Pet’s Vet at 516.797.8387 so you can meet Sparkles. Perhaps you’re the special loving person she’s been waiting for. I’m aching to write a happy ending to this story. Every living creature deserves to give love and be loved in return, don’t you agree?
