re-kindergarten students at Deer Park’s Abraham Lincoln School participated in their Annual Pumpkin Workshop. This year, students worked with a “special guest” to make a pumpkin votive candleholder. Parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles assisted the children in transforming an empty jar into a festive decoration. Students enjoyed the seasonal activity. Photo

EDP DENTAL PLAN For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
It’s no secret that dental work can be expensive - a basic checkup is pricey enough, but if there is a problem that requires more attention, a simple toothache can turn into a costly headache. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Thousands of New Yorkers have already discovered the surefire solution with the EDP Dental Plan. For just $99 a year, members get the satisfaction of watching their dental bills get cut in half. In just one visit to the dentist, the plan often pays for itself! Since its inception more than 10 years ago, EDP Dental Plan has

Thankful This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?
Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and
Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it has raised about $2.3 million for a relief fund that will be used primarily to benefit hundreds of employees’ families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Within 48 hours of landfall, the 16-hospital health system had placed 62 families into temporary housing, and those efforts have continued for hundreds of additional employees who were displaced. In addition, through the health system’s dedicated Emergency Employee Resource Center (EERC), North Shore-LIJ employees have already contributed over 1,000 vacation hours – totaling 137 business days – to impacted employees who Continued On Page 10

Continued From Page 9 will need to take time off to try to get their lives back in order. The EERC also has an online Community Forum where employees who want to help their coworkers in need can connect with them to coordinate direct donations, rides to work and other assistance. “Considering how so many North Shore-LIJ employees care for their patients during their critical hours of need, we’re proud to step up and take care of our colleagues when they need it most,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “Even after Hurricane Sandy left death and destruction in her wake, there are untold stories of North Shore-LIJ caregivers who continued to come to work, despite losing their homes and most of their possessions
to flooding and fires. Their extraordinary selfsacrifice, dedication and commitment are truly inspiring. Equally inspiring is the outpouring of support from North Shore-LIJ employees for their struggling coworkers. I extend my deepest appreciation to all of our employees who have generously donated money and time off to their colleagues in need.” Hundreds of North Shore-LIJ employees have already benefited from the health system’s employee relief efforts. Following are a few of their stories. Of the $2.3 million pledged thus far for relief efforts, about $2 million represent the proceeds from Monday evening’s Lenox Hill Autumn Ball at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Event proceeds typically go toward the hospital’s
capital projects, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction it caused throughout the tristate area, Mr. Dowling decided to redirect funds from the event toward North Shore-LIJ’s employee relief fund, as well as charities supporting other hurricane victims in the community. Those wishing to support the effort can send a donation by check payable to the North Shore-LIJ Hurricane Sandy Employee Relief Fund and mail it to: NSLIJ Health System Foundation, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY, 11021, or contribute on line at: https://support.northshor elij.com/sandyrelief. Scouts Host Out-Of-State Crews The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council has opened its camp in Baiting Hollow to power crew workers who have travelled to Long Island from out of state to help in the restoration of electricity to Suffolk County. Up to 200 workers are being hosted at Suffolk County Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. The dining hall, which annually feeds thousands of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, is now a combination of barracks and mess hall for these workers. Crews from as far away as California are staying at camp, enjoying hot meals, showers, and clean beds. The camp is also providing laundry service for the crews. Thanks to the help of Scouting volunteers and camp staff, the crews have warm shelter from the cold as they continue to

direct assistance to employees impacted by the storm. Funds raised will be distributed through hospitals and health care organizations. Other associations involved in this national fund raising effort include the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association, New Jersey Hospital Association, the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, and Western New York Healthcare Association. “Hospital employees demonstrated tremendous dedication during this crisis,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “These individuals suffered serious personal loss – many are now homeless – even as they worked to ensure the safety of those in their care. The fund is intended to assist those health care workers so that they will
continue to be there for us when we need their care and expertise.” The Hospital Council and other sponsoring associations ask everyone to spread the word about this fund and consider donating to the Hurricane Sandy Health Care Employee Relief Fund. Dahill added that the fund is an excellent way for any patient or family member who has received exceptional health care services in the past to show their appreciation for this care by helping these health care workers’ colleagues rebuild their lives. With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer
clubs and leagues adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. The application is attached. “Many of our members
have suffered a tremendous amount of hardship from Hurricane Sandy. It’s times like these that all Americans, including the soccer community, come together to help,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “We applaud Region I’s generosity in helping those adversely affected and Eastern New York will match every grant they approve for our members.”

Sales Tax Relief
Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced an emergency sales tax relief program to ease the costs of reconstructing Suffolk County's small businesses. “Sandy was a devastating storm that affected many small businesses in Suffolk. This program will provide immediate relief for our businesses to rebuild,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. The program provides relief from state and local sales tax on building materials such as windows, sheet rock, flooring and electrical as well as on equipment a business needs to replace that was damaged by the storm. Anthony Manetta the IDA’s Executive Director said, “Making sure our companies operate again
efficiently is a main priority. We have streamlined the IDA process to get our companies to start rebuilding quickly and more cost effectively.” The program will provide sales tax relief for purchase of building materials and for the repurchase of equipment of up to $100,000 in purchase costs. There will be 200 businesses eligible for the program. A business must have 25 or fewer full-time employees to participate. Joanne Minieri, Commissioner of Economic Development & Planning, and IDA Board Member added, “It is absolutely critical that small businesses open and operate again. They are the lifeblood of our local economy.” When a small business owner takes advantage of the IDA's relief program,

the agency will facilitate discussions between them and the Town they operate in. The Town will be able to communicate directly with the business to determine if there are any issues they can develop solutions for. “Partnering with the Towns gives an added level of support to the local business owners in need of help. They could have a question on permitting, or where to access certain Town specific forms,” said IDA Executive Director Anthony Manetta. Small business owners who have had their place of business damaged by Super Storm Sandy are urged to fill out a relief form at w w w. S u f f o l k I D A . o r g . These past few weeks has been a catastrophic episode in the lives of so many in our Long Island community. With so many agencies, organizations and volunteers working towards a speedy recovery and clean-up, it seems that lives will be back to normal soon. “However, we know that disasters can take a great emotional toll on those impacted by them and can be longerlasting than the disaster itself,” according to Linda Leonard, Executive Director of Long Island Crisis Center. “As people resume their routine lifestyles and less media attention is given to the crisis, there are those who will be left thinking they are alone and isolated.” At this stage, it is important to recognize
the signs of emotional distress and the Crisis Center has put together a list of warning signs for people to consider: · Sleeping too much or too little · Stomachaches or headaches · Anger, feeling edgy or lashing out at others · Overwhelming sadness · Worrying a lot of the time · Feeling like you have to keep busy · Lack of energy or always feeling tired · Drinking alcohol, smoking or using tobacco more than usual or using illegal drugs · Eating too much or too little · Not connecting with others · Feeling like you won’t ever be happy again Just as important as knowing the warning
signs of distress is the importance of knowing when to ask for help…and that help is available: · Call Long Island Crisis Center, 24 hours a day/7 days a week at 516.679.1111 · Chat online with a counselor at www.licconline.org · Text “LICC” to 839863 “The Crisis Center was able to continue its 24/7 hotlines throughout the power outages. Counselors spoke to many people who were in the midst of dealing with various stages of destruction and loss in their lives due to Hurricane Sandy,” adds Ms. Leonard. “Now we need to make sure that help and support get to those who are trying to manage and survive the disaster emotionally.”

Turn Daily.” Governmental agencies such as the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management have asked Baiting Hollow Scout Camp to assist with displaced families, families that have borne the brunt of Hurricane Sandy. Once again, the Boy Scouts jumped in with a “can-do” attitude and found a way to provide up to 18 families with lodging, breakfast, and dinner at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for the foreseeable future. A sense of community and a strong desire to put the needs of others before ones own has driven the Boy Scouts response. Council staff and volunteers have been working around the clock to help emergency workers, displaced families, those with lost possessions, and those with basic needs like a hot shower or a bag of ice. FEMA, working through National Grid and the Suffolk County government, has provided the needed funding for the facilities, equipment, food, laundry services, and other essentials, and for that we are grateful. Most of all, though, we are thankful and proud of the volunteers who have worked every day to help our neighbors, using vacation time or working the volunteer effort like a second job, going to work during the day and caring for those in need at night. With Santa and his elves in the old Pine Neck Barn and the blacksmith beating away in the Cleveland-Gagen Blacksmith Shop it must be time again for the Annual Candlelight Tour and Tree Lighting at the Southold Historical Society. The Tour takes place the day after Thanksgiving, November 23rd, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Society’s Maple Lane Museum Complex in Southold. “This is one of the most fun and entertaining events of the year,” stated Society Director Geoffrey K. Fleming, “It gives the Historical Society a chance to show off the great ingenuity and decorating expertise of its volunteers,” he continued. Each year a different group of local residents decorate the various areas of the Museum Complex. The Tour is as exciting for children as it is for the adults. Each period building is expertly decorated and arranged for visitors. Carefully placed candles and lanterns light the way through the grounds where tour guides in period hat and costume help the visiting public maneuver between the many buildings. While adults marvel at the decorations, children patiently await their visit with Santa, who is aided by his elves in the Pine Neck Barn. Each year the Candlelight Tour is
different, and no two buildings are decorated in the same manner. Greens, swags, and red holiday ribbons flow over the mantels and furnishings in each of the historic buildings on the Tour. In addition to these decorative treatments, special Holiday themed objects from the Society's rich collections will appear in these displays. At the Thomas Moore House early Christmas traditions and period music dominate the cozy interior. At the Ann Currie-Bell House there will be demonstrations of traditional holiday craft making, including embroidery, rug hooking, and knitting. In the Bay View Schoolhouse the old fashioned cast iron stove will rumble away as children seated nearby create custom ornaments to decorate the school tree. Musicians stroll the grounds in period costume while visitors wander between the many other buildings, including the Print Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Corncrib, Icehouse, and others. A special group of refreshments will be available to all who attend the Tour in the Pine Neck Barn Annex. The lighting of the Hamlet Christmas Tree, which is looked forward to by all, will take place in front of the Ann CurrieBell House at 5 p.m. At the Society’s Prince Building, located on
Something To Be Thankful For This November, many families in Suffolk West are thankful for something special: the gift of their friendship with a New York City child. Each summer, over 4,000 innercity children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to
Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. By volunteering as a host family for summer 2013, the spirit of Thanksgiving can continue in your home throughout the year. “I love how quiet and
peaceful it is compared to the city. When I’m with my host family, I always experience something different,” says 14 year-old Reggie, of Queens, NY. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than
1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are
reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air

sundries were obtained and assembled in every heated building at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. A hearty breakfast has been provided before dawn every day by volunteers and staff, enabling the work crews to be fed and on their job sites at the break of light. The Council also organized a clothing drive to assist members of the community who lost possessions in the hurricane. A large quantity of clothing has been collected both at the Council Service Center in Medford and at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. It is not too late to contribute! New or used clothing in good condition can be dropped off at the Council Service Center, 7 Scouting Boulevard in Medford, or at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, 1774 Sound Avenue in Calverton. While the Council organized these largescale relief efforts, local districts and units organized smaller efforts targeting the hardest hit c o m m u n i t i e s , volunteering their time to help their neighbors in any way they can. Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews have been active in helping residents with skills learned in the Scouting program. As the overall relief effort continues to unfold, additional requests have been made of the Boy Scouts and the response has been in line with the Scout Slogan - “Do A Good

Hurricane Sandy left a wake of destruction in Suffolk County and the Boy Scouts of America mobilized to provide support for the recovery effort. Suffolk County Council, BSA, holds a charter from the Boy Scouts of America National Council and is responsible for delivering the Scouting program to Suffolk County communities. The Boy Scouts of America motto is “Be Prepared,” and Suffolk County Council was ready to provide support and service in a number of ways. Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, the Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp opened to the community to provide hot showers, hot coffee, and bags of ice. Even though the camp sustained significant tree damage, none of the camp structures suffered serious harm. Providing showers, coffee, and ice was the first of a number of services provided by the Boy Scouts. A few days after the hurricane struck, National Grid contacted the Council to ask if Baiting Hollow Scout Camp could house and feed out-ofstate utility workers. Even though this request was unexpected, Council staff and volunteers rallied and, within 24 hours, provided sleeping quarters and meal preparation for up to two hundred emergency workers. Color Of Unity themselves and those who love them. In a movement that illustrated their solidarity, students wore red and signed a banner pledging to have a bullyand drug-free school. John F. Kennedy Intermediate students competed in a live game show, The Brain
Challenge One School/One Goal. Teams of students worked together to answer topical questions during buzzer rounds and complete physical challenges. Students learned the truths about bullying and how it affects their peers, as well as the dangers of
drug and alcohol use. In addition to designating a week for drug awareness, the month of October is also National Bully Awareness and Prevention Month. Photo provided by: Syntax
Getting Creative
Throughout the district, Deer Park students participated in Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign that serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of children through activities centered on
drug prevention and education. Students observed the week by making a personal commitment to live drugfree lives, with the ultimate goal being to create a drug-free America. At Robert Frost Middle School, students
participated in the Police Smart program, led by a local law enforcement official. Through gradespecific presentations, students learned how to make smart decisions, rise above peer pressure and recognize the consequences their actions have on
Pre-kindergarten students at Deer Park’s Abraham Lincoln School participated in their annual pumpkin workshop. This year, students worked with a “special guest” to make a pumpkin votive candleholder. Parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles assisted the children in transforming an empty jar into a festive decoration. “It’s a great opportunity for parents to see the skills
their children have developed since the start of the school year,” said teacher Laura Oddo. “For most students, this is their first time attending a day program, so everything they’ve been learning is brand new to them.” Prior to the workshop, students studied pumpkins in the classroom. “This workshop allows students to improve their motor skills, which will help prepare them for writing,” stated Principal
Dr. Christine Criscione, who encouraged parents to let their children do most of the work. “The fun for the kids today will be the fact that you are here to give them your undivided attention.” Students enjoyed the seasonal activity, putting their imagination to work cutting, pasting and painting. PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org
Dear Readers,
For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance. The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...
placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.
From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. We can board as a last resort. els and blankets. We don’t have power, and are running on a generator, which means we don’t have a washing machine/dryer. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting
from the shelter is urged to contact: Nancy Giris at NGiris@tohmail.org; or Wendy Cariello at WCariello@tohmail.org. Any rescues interested in pulling from the shelter are asked to contact: Shari Polen at Spolen@tohmail.org. If you want to help, you can do the following: • foster an animal • donate newspaper • donate gently-used towels/blankets • donate pillows/cases • donate cat carriers/dog cages (all sizes) • donate cat litter/cat food (kitten food) • donate dog toys/dog food (unopened) Little Shelter: Readers, the Little Shelter in Huntington has been devastated by the storm. Eighteen trees are down and Kennel Two is destroyed. Thank heavens none of the dogs were hurt. Little Shelter is in desperate need of immediate donations (large or small) in order to rebuild and continue their wonderful rescue work and community outreach programs. Call 631.368.8770 or visit little www.shelter.com to make a donation. Do you have a Hurricane Sandy story you’d like to share? Vet-Connect employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is being coordinated by NSHC’s Communications Committee and hospital human resource directors. Vet Connect can be accessed via NSHC’s home page at www.nshc.org. Once users click on the Vet Connect icon, they are brought to interior pages that provide direct links to hospitals’ job banks, military skills translation assistance, and health care career training programs for veterans. The service is also accessible via hospitals’ websites. Look for the Vet Connect logo. “Our hospitals recognize the extraordinary service our veterans have made to our country, said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of NSNC. “All of our
hospitals are committed to assisting veterans with their employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is a simple to use, one-stop resource for veterans that puts helpful information at their fingertips. Phil Moschitta, director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, says a service like this is needed now more than ever. “It’s so reassuring to have the support of hospitals and health care leaders from across Long Island. Our veterans made great sacrifices to serve our nation and their high ideals to commitment and honor make them exemplary employees, said Moschitta.

of residents and fans of the team would have been sad if there was no game. According to Mr. Tsunis, “During a crisis like Hurricane Sandy, it’s great to see people working together to make a difference. The Stony Brook University Athletic programs have provided a night of entertainment and family fun for those that have no heat or electricity in the local community. I commend the visiting electrical workers for making a sacrifice so the game could go on.’’
Respite Grant Received Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $21,000 grant from the KnappSwezey Foundation in Patchogue. The grant will go towards funding for Pal-O-Mine’s Respite Program. Pal-O-Mine operates multiple therapeutic riding and educational programs, such as the Respite Program, for individuals with disabilities including children and adults with mental or physical special needs. The Respite Program provides students with a structured learning environment during scheduled school breaks. Students are able to engage in stimulating activities including horse riding, horse care and arts and crafts while improving upon writing, reading and listening skills. Alongside these benefits for students, the program gives parents and caretakers the opportunity to continue their work
schedule and regular daily tasks. Pal-O-Mine understands the importance to offer families an organized, exciting and positive curriculum for children during winter and spring break, summer vacation and major holidays.
For more information about Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s Respite Program or donating to Pal-O-Mine through either donations or services, please contact Pal-O-Mine at 631.348.1389 or visit www.pal-o-mine.org.

Vet Connect – a webbased initiative to raise awareness about the employment, health, and resource needs of veterans on Long Island, particularly returning veterans – is live today, just in time for Veteran’s Day. This public awareness initiative is the work of the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its member hospitals. NSHC is the association that represents these hospitals on a variety of hospital and health care legislative and regulatory issues. The initiative underscores hospitals’ recognition of the extraordinary service veterans have made to this country and hospitals’ commitment to assisting veterans with their
