I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense.” It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that.

I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. My mother, perplexed, followed me back upstairs to check out the situation.

She peered through the window. Tap. Tap. Tap. She gently knocked on the glass. Yes, the glass. Apparently, in my frustration I hadn’t noticed that, while the window was indeed open, the storm door remained

in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air.

Instant classic.

Oh but that wasn’t where it ended.

Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite cliché and widely used. Except… I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact.

Case in point: Moo point.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression.

Oh, but there’s more.

There was the “play it by year” debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,

what did you just say?” reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense.

I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes…play it by year…get it?”

Apparently not.

Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from?

One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along.

See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

Highlights from this year’s effort include a large donation from Bethpagebased Goya Foods that supplied more than 8,000 pounds of food, and Centereach residents Jennifer and Mike Trombino, who donated 50 frozen turkeys worth $1,400.

“This year’s drive took on increased meaning as exemplified by our supporters and our committed volunteers, many of whom themselves remain temporarily displaced from the storm, having suffered great damage to their own homes,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “We are thankful to have the means to support our fellow Long Islanders during this time of adversity, and want to thank again all of our partners including Cablevision, the NY Islanders and Connoisseur Media – for continuing to support this vital effort.”

Expanded this year to support Hurricane Sandy Victims, the Bethpage Turkey Drive collected frozen turkeys, cleaning supplies, diapers and shelf-stable nonperishable food for Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization which has been extensively involved in supporting victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Hundreds of volunteers donated their time to help assist in the collection, helping to unload car deliveries, sort through groceries, and load donations onto Island Harvest’s refrigerated truck.

Volunteers included students from Hofstra University’s Women’s Golf Team and Men’s Lacrosse Team and various athletes from Stony Brook University.

Since 2009, hundreds of Long Island residents, businesses and volunteers have come out to assist in the Bethpage Turkey Drive, which after four years, now has cumulatively collected 20,000 turkeys and 35,000

The New York Islanders announced today that they raised $28,071 for area residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. These funds go directly to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need.

Over the last week, people from around the world came together online to bid in the special Hockey With A Heart auction featuring one-ofa-kind sports and e n t e r t a i n m e n t experiences. Local sports teams, organizations and individuals all donated to this unique auction, hosted by the Islanders, in an effort to help those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Fifteen donors contributed a total of 33 items, which were bid on more than 300 times. This auction raised $22,317 that will all go towards the American Red

Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief fund.

On Monday, November 12th, the Islanders held the Hockey With A Heart open skate fundraiser. The team invited all area residents to join them for a day away from dealing with the Hurricane damage and over 2,000 people attended. The Islanders and SMG opened Nassau Coliseum’s ice free of charge for anyone who participated. Those who visited the arena were encouraged to bring monetary and nonperishable donations, while all concession proceeds also went directly to those in need.

All together, along with employees from the New York Islanders, arena management company SMG and Coliseum concessionaire SAVOR, the team collected over 5,200 pounds of food, $5,754 in cash and

countless amounts of clothing that filled two 24foot box trucks amounting to 13,000 pounds.

The Islanders donated all bedding, blankets and clothing to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, all food and baby supplies to Island Harvest and all money to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need.

The event is planned for December 9th, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“The Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization is excited to be promoting Toys for Tots across the North Shore of Long Island,” said Patricia Petersen, president and CEO of DGSIR. “As a group, we have a history of coming together to support good causes and we are particularly thrilled to support Toys for Tots, especially in light of the many Long Island families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.”

Last year, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s Laura Zambratto, an associate director with the organization’s upper tier marketing program, hosted a Toys for Tots drop off during an open house at one of her listings. She decorated the home, provided refreshments and by the end of the open house had greeted more than 100 visitors including neighbors, prospective homebuyers, real estate agents and friends.

“I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” she recalls.

“One person brought two new bicycles. I knew right away that the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization would want to join with me this year and help collect toys for children in our local communities. Of course, we didn’t know at the time how great the need would be this year.”

Dim A Little, Save A Lot (NAPSI)—Rising energy costs and recent legislation called the Energy Independence and Security Act are encouraging many homeowners to reduce energy consumption. This means new, energy-efficient light sources are more popular than ever. It also makes dimming the lights more than a way to set a nice mood. It’s a way to save electricity.

Dimming an incandescent or halogen light just 25 percent can save you up to 20 percent in energy—and makes your lightbulbs last up to 20 times longer.

Though compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and screw-in light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs use less energy than typical incandescent and halogen bulbs do, historically, they’ve not been compatible with light dimmers. Lights have been known to drop out, not turn on and/or turn off unexpectedly.

To help, there’s the new C¡L dimmers from Lutron.

They work not only with incandescent and halogen bulbs, but also with dimmable CFLs and LEDs.

• Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas.

• Be careful what you

clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers.

Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners.

Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can

be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars.

Special Thank You Seventh-grade students in Lindsay Baudier’s social studies class at Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park showed their appreciation to both past and present military personnel by participating in Applebee’s National Thank You Movement. In honor of Veterans Day, the students personalized their own postcards with messages of thanks and praise for members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This Thanksgiving Day the Circle of Love Ministry Worldwide provided over 800 meals to residents of the Township of Babylon.

This Thanksgiving Celebration included a meal with turkey, ham and all the fixings.

Arts Council Presents...

The Deer Park Arts Council will present a live radio show version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on Tuesday, December 11th at 7 p.m. at Deer Park High School. Admission is $5.

This production is staged as an old-time radio show, with the actors speaking their lines into stage microphones. The performers have been selected from the Deer Park Schools and community. Members of the Synergy Theatre Company are also part of the large cast of characters.

2012 marks the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth, and his beloved Christmas story of Tiny Tim and Ebenezer Scrooge has not lost any of its appeal over the centuries.

The Deer Park Arts

Council was formed in 2010 to support the arts in the Deer Park Schools and in the community. Past events include museum trips, concerts, and theatre activities. Proceeds from A Christmas Carol will help fund scholarships for Deer Park students.

Deer Park High School is located at 1 Falcon Place, just north of the LIRR and west of 231.
